Heartwarming, to see a technician at work. No sawzall, no vice grips, no hammer banging. No unnecessary chatter, just concise instructions, proper order, torque specs for each fastener, awesome job young man. Well done.
Great video. Can't stand the videos that spend 20 mins talking/ studdering about everything but the car. Straight to the point and good explanation of what to do.
Great, informative video! So it doesn’t perpetuate further, I know it may seem minor but I just want it to be correct, the word is Giubo. From Wikipedia, among others: A giubo (JOO-boh); etymology: giunto Boschi, "Boschi joint"), also known as a flex disc, and sometimes misspelled as guibo, is a flexible coupling used to transmit rotational torque between the drive shaft and the companion flange on mechanical devices, such as an automobile engine.
This video is very well done and proved very helpful when I recently replaced my drive shaft. I had some issues with getting the new shaft in and removed the rear bracket the the exhaust hangers bolt to. 4 13 mm bolts and it was off in a few minutes. Good call on the flex disc as I had no idea there was a "correct" way to install. Thank for posting!

My father inspected mine today (E60 530d y2004), very good news : it's completely shot ! Why good news you ask ? Well, it's always a pleasure when you dont need to investigate too much to find out if a component is in need of servicing. Will either order it or buy it at local shop this week but either way, old unit is getting out of my car on saturday at best.
Great video, the only thing that confused me was at 2:30 in the clip, you said: "loosen the collar on the drive shaft", was not aware of that. Can I do it by hand, or do I need a tool. You seemed to have just twisted it with one hand while you held the other end with the other, but did you loosen it before hand with a tool ? thanks.
Thank you for the informative video however at the 5:17 mark when you start talking about the orientation of the arrows on the flex disc I think you provide confusing information. The correct orientation is for the arrows to point to the drive flange OF THE TRANSMISSION, however, you are using the drive shaft in your example and therefore may inadvertently provide misleading info. At the 6:06 mark you correctly state and point to the TRANSMISSION drive flanges for the orientation of the arrows. The key is when viewed from under the car looking toward the front of the car, the transmission turns CCW and you want the transfer of torque from the transmission flange to the driveshaft flange to be applied using the thicker portion of the flex disc. Just a comment to avoid any confusion on the proper orientation.
5:35 and 5:39 You show us one thing and its contrary ??? First time the circular line on the flector joint is toward the driveshaft and when you put it in place the circular line is toward the transmission ???
This is an awesome video man, helped me get my carrier bearing and guibo replaced. However, I’m stuck, unable to get the exhaust back in (can’t get the mid pipe to clear the subframe at the front of the vehicle). Have you got any techniques for getting the exhaust back on?
Great video, thank you. I wouldn't have known about preloading the bearing as no other videos mention it. For those doing this at home you can do it without removing the exhaust completely, instead you can just undo all the retaining bolts and lower it from the rear end and rest it on a jack or blocks of wood etc, you will need to wrestle with the heat shield slightly but it is doable.
Would this be the reason that when I depress my clutch at low speed I get a clunk type similar to when you twisted the drive shaft and also when the back end drops after a speed bump I get the same sound?
I'm getting a really bad clunking noise from my CSB, i took the heat shield off and it was torn to shreds. The rubber boot was no longer there and it had TONS of play. Maybe I didn't set the pre-load correctly when I replaced it? Maybe I didn't even install it correctly on the driveshaft. Oh, well. I'm done messing around with it I'm just going to replace the entire driveshaft like you guys did. My u-joints are probably shot to hell and gone anyway. Enjoyed the video.
In my case, when putting the automatic transmission in reverse, the car moves a bit (while holding the brake). I know the rear flex disc is cracked. Is this related? Are there chances for the front flex disc to be affected too?
i dont know what you did in the last last part where u had some kind of pliers in there did u squeeze or pulle or what did you do there? sorry non english speaker here and i need to do all of this in my bmw
Good video since I have to help my friend replace his carrier bearing... *Question: when you twisted the drive shaft and it was clear (to me) that the u joint was shot, why did you have to replace the whole drive shaft???? Can't you just replace the u joint?* (I know, I know, I'm not a BMW owner..sorry😜)
The original drive shaft has irreplaceable u joints. I believe when you purchase the new drive shafts they will have greaseable and replaceable u joints.
i did this without lifters and just have small room for my head and hand movement its not easy as it looks like. so painfull and took more time.. but thanks for the tutor ,really help me out
very thorough video on this diy. best one on the web imo. this is my 3rd time "fixing" my driveline within 2 years. With your single piece driveshaft, does it elimimate a center support bearing?

I've replace my center support bearing and flex discs, fitted them corectly and on first test, while accelerating in 2nd and 3rd gears, i can feel vibrations/treppidations under the car. This happens just in thoes gears, in rest drives perfect. There's no other issues with the car, i've just replaced the center support bearing as it has failed, so the rubber got cracked. Before this to happen the car was driving mint. What's happening? The car: E60 520D N47 2008 Manual.
The arrows on the Giubo should point towards the transmission. You want directional compression across the thick part of the disc, not the thin. Installed as shown here you're going to get a clunking rattle as the disc unsprings.

MrErikw26 since it could be made of stronger materials than rubber, especially since it's part of the drivetrain, one can only assume its purpose is to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness.
The flex joint (also known as giubo) is a flexible rubber drive coupling that joins driveline components to reduce vibration, while allowing a limited range of flexibility. Joint rubber deteriorates over time from torque stress and heat hardening. A failed joint is a common cause of driveline noise and vibration.
Those polyurethane transmission mounts can't be a good idea if your not changing the motor mounts to the same material, as then you'll have loading of the transmission case.
The flex disc guibo has to go on a certain way, I believe there's arrows that are supposed to point towards the transmission. In the raised section there's two bolt holes, one for the transmission, the other for the driveshaft, it has to do with where the disc will compress. This video explains it: ua-cam.com/video/Vw7Zbp1rfGI/v-deo.html
Great video. Typical BMW though, you have to spend two hours removing crap just to get to the driveshaft. In addition to the exhaust and heat shields, there are plastic belly pans running the full length of the car.

The rest of the world would love it if in these videos on German cars, a country using Metric, they would also the metric system. Only 3 countries in the world are still foolishly hanging on to the old Imperial system after all. Besides, it's more accurate in Newton meters (Nm). Cause I personally don't know if 16 ft/lb is rounded up or down from the originally Newton meter specification from BMW. 16 ft/lb is 21.69 Nm... 15 ft/lb is 20.34 Nm and 17 ft/lb is 23.05 Nm.... so that means the original specification is either 21 Nm or 22 Nm. Oh boy... the day the world will rejoice when the Americans finally convert themselves to metric.
