It just so happens that the town we are near now is known for it's Bear statues all over town. They even have a museum of bear statues that have been retired or used in parades over the years. Looked like a great day.
That bear was probably on its last legs des - it sounded totally buggered. A lovely historic place though. I tell you what you wouldn't want it to be much bigger otherwise you two would be pissed up. Ha ha! Good going - thanks for sharing. Mark
Hi Mark. Yes, poor thing! Definitely a passtime best banished to history! At least the bear and its successor achieved fame 😁 The Bear Town tap was so good we never reached that micro pub I wanted to try! Concentration needed along the canal bank on the way back 👍😁 Cheers for watching. Much appreciated 👍👍
@@DesGreene Yeah, we've seen the modern images of bear slavery. Good we don't have to see it here now. Good to hear of the bear beverage and your concentrated walk back. Have a great weekend ahead.
Hi Chris. I think the nickname has probably become more widely known because of Bear Town Brewery to be honest. I've visited the town for work in the past, but never had a good look around. You can see it suffering like a lot of small towns these days, but we enjoyed our day out! All the best and see you soon 👍☺
@DesGreene sadly as new larger out of town places are available no one want to go shop to shop like we used to. To be honest, I can't remember the last time I was in our local town for the very same reason. They seem to be just charity sops, gambling, and pubs. But even the pubs are dying out sadly. Covid was the final nail, but they were dying far before that.
@@chrisbentleywalkingandrambling Yes, my home town is the same. Shame really, as we used to shop there, but not many shops worth the effort these days. Trafford Centre probably the main culprit, and I wouldn't visit it if you paid me! 😂
Hellom, dearest Maria and Des! So right! Such a very lovely historical town! I enjoyed watching and discovering it with great interest. Amazing nature and beautiful buildings and...good beer! hahahaMy biggest embrace and like and all the best! I'm leaving tomorrow with my husband for a long weekend to Porto. I'm thrilled!! Ciao! Renata
Hi Renata. It was a n interesting little town to explore. Some lovely old buildings. Hope you have a great time in Porto! All the best and see you soon👍🙂
Hi Kaat. We both enjoyed the little museum. The beer in the second pub was excellent... the first pub, not so good! 😝 Hope you are keeping well! All the best 👍🙂
Great video, moved To Congleton 2 years ago from Wilmslow and the town is getting better by the year, massive investment is currently under way at a number of sites in the town centre (particularly the market area) It's a hidden gem of a town with so many micro breweries around and the nightlife is brilliant at weekends with a great atmosphere in the pubs/bars. Not to mention all the walks and hidden trails around. Glad you enjoyed it, I hope you pop back in a years time as it will be different again here :)
Cheers for watching! We did enjoy our visit👍 The weather wasn't great, but the Bear Town Tap soon solved that problem! Great to hear it's a town that's on the up. So many small towns ars struggling these days👍
Bear Town? You would think in an area like Cheshire, they would be all about the cat! lol I guess the heathens won that battle of the Bible vs the Bear. LOL Great stuff! Bruce and Otis
Ha ha, the Cheshire cat is still a big symbol around the county, but Congleton is all about the bear 😁 Somebody else commented that using the money to buy the bear was good business, as it would earn money to get the new bible more quickly! 😂 All the best to you both. Catch you soon👍☺
Hi Des and Maria! Fun visit to this small town- just the thing Steve and I like to do! Beautiful streets and architecture. We also enjoy small, local museums and how they’re lovingly put together. Fun story about the Bear and the Bible, and so nice to walk along the canal and the river. Great atmosphere and nice visits to the Pubs! 😄👌👍 Cheers!
Hi Jennifer. It was a nice little town to explore. Some beautiful historic buildings and the tiny museum was really interesting. They had a neolithic scraper on display, identical to one I found last year! The bear/bible story is amusing...I'm glad we no longer have "sports" like bear bating though! All the best and take care 👍☺
*Never been* but a place I remember often seeing a sign for Conclerton when I used to visit my parents and sister who lived in Alderley Edge, which is not that far away. Never new about the bear baiting back in those days minds and buying a new bear rather than a new bible - sacrilege lol! To be fair it looked a nice place to walk around and a nice place to have a pint too. Cheers Alan
Hi Alan. Yes, Aldelerly Edge is not too far away. Footballer's wives territory! Congleton felt a lot more down to earth! 😁 Cheers for watching and see you soon👍👍
Hi Des, loved the story of Bear Town! 😁 Congleton seems a nice place, as you said some beautiful historic buildings. And even those footbridges looked really interesting, especially that corkscrew bridge. Glad you managed to get some good beer in the Beartown Tap after the initial disappointment in the first pub! 😅All the best 👍
Hi Patrick! I shuddered when you reminded me of that first pint! 😝 Shame, as it was a nice old pub. The Bear Town Tap soon banished the taste though! 👍😁 There were some nice bridges. I think the footbridge near the park might have been Victorian, as it matched the Pavillion in style. And the corkscrew one on the canal was a beauty. There's a similar one at Marple. Many thanks for watching and see you soon 👍😊
Hello Des & Maria, it's so great both of you had a chance to spend the weekend there for a different scenery and experience. You spotted a heron, beautiful park with lovely flowers. Enjoy the rest of this Summer and stay well!
Loved the story of how the town got it's name...never been although i do remember driving through once on my travels...shame about the not so great IPA.
Hi Steve. Nice little town, and some decent walks nearby (Bosley Cloud and Mow Cop etc) but we decided to explore the town as we've done both fairly recently. That IPA was a shocker!....but luckily the Bear Town Tap more than made up for it!
Noswaith dda Des a Maria 😃👋 This was really enjoyable and I loved the history you told and how the town was saving up for a bible but got a bear instead haha ! The museum looked great and it looked like you enjoyed your drinks . That looked like a place worth visiting with the historic buildings too :) ~ Anna 👍
Noswaith dda, Anna! We had a fun day there. I reckon Congleton shares the same problems as a lot of small towns these days, but it has some wonderful historic buildings and we both enjoyed the little museum. Glad you enjoyed joining us! Hwyl!👍😊
That was fascinating Des. Never been there and looks a really interesting place. The bear / bible story is brilliant!! 😃. Museum looks interesting with some fascinating history - we always try to get to see a local museum. As we always try to get to see the inside of a pub! Ha, that’s the first time I think, that you’ve had a negative beer review 🤣🤣. Couldn’t have been good. But the Beartown Tap looks fantastic with a wide range \ choice Nice one Have a good upcoming weekend you guys.
Hi Dave. Oh dear...that first pint! One of the worst I've ever been served. Shame, as the pub itself was nice. Didn't name and shame it in case it was a one off, but I suspect not! Luckily the Bear Town Tap more than made up for it! 😁 The bear and the bible story is amusing. One of my US viewers pointed out that it was a wise move. The new bear earns the money to get the bible quicker. Speculate to accumulate! 😁 All the best and see you soon👍☺
The bear vs Bible story is funny. Well, honestly that was smart. The bear would bring in more money, and they could get the Bible quicker. 😂😂. They did have a lot of bear things around town. Good museum. Cute town. Too bad the beer wasn’t as good as you were expecting. 😂. Pretty flowers along the river. That egret seem to be enjoying the water running over his feet hope the 2nd pub was better.
Ha ha, I never thought of the bear/bible story like that, but you do have a point! 😂 I was wondering what happened to the old bear. I hope he got a good retirement! Luckily the beer in the second pub more than made up for the one in the first! We had a great day out! Many thanks for joining us👍☺
How many 'swift uns' did you sink then Des?. I liked the look of the Beartown Tap, a good looking building from the outside too. Good story re the Beartown name......I hope they got their money's worth. Cheers, Chris
Erm, that's classified information! 😁 To be honest, we didn't go too mad, knowing we had a walk back. Congleton do seem to love their bear. Hartlepool don't seem too proud of their monkey for some reason! 😁 All the best and cheers for watching👍
