    It's amazing that it is so big and that it survived too. You can bet that all the stone was repurposed once the Romans left. I've not seen one that big before. I've not heard off Anna & Alf for a while. I hope they are OK. Great walk about the town and a good beer to finish. Great little hike, Des. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi Chris. I think Anna mentioned on her video that King Edward pinched the stone for Caernarfon castle. Hence just the foundations remaining. I've had a few video comments from Anna over the Summer. Sounds like they've been away camping a lot👍
      It was a good little wander around the town, and only 20 mins back to our camp site out in the countryside! I believe there is a sneaky trig point hidden in the town if you're ever down there 😁

    Aww thanks so much for the shout out Des this was brilliant. Sorry I'm catching up with everyone on UA-cam after weeks of an eye infection that Alf and I have been passing back to each other and has been awful but thankfully no damage done. What we found sad about Segontium was the houses and roads built around it. Loved your tour of Caernarfon too and a shame about the rain but at least you got to visit the pub for the Porthmadog beer . Loved this 🙂👍

      Hi Anna & Alf. Sorry to hear you've not been well! I assumed you were still making the most of camping as much as possible! Hope you are both feeling better!
      We enjoyed looking around Segontium, and we wouldn't have known it was there before watching your video. We had a lovely week in Wales. Some challenging walks, but luckily most of the rain hit over the nights 😁☔

      Hi there! Yes, the scale of it is quite impressive, and I think some of it may have been built over, so must have been huge. Interesting to have a look around, and the old town is nice to visit also.
      Hope you are both keeping well👍 All the best!☺

    The Roman fort was most impressive Des (must of had some significance to garrison a 1000 men ) 🤠👍

      Hi Simon. Yes, I think it was quite a strategic location. Guarding the Menai Straits, and controlling mineral resources on Anglesey and up in the mountains. Weren't daft those Romans! 😁

    What a great trip. Anna and Alf did a good job with it too. Too bad they didn’t have any information leaflets. Love all the history. It’s absolutely amazing how large this Roman fortress was. It’s such a pretty area.

      Hi there! Even though we've visited Caernarfon many times, we never knew this place existed until we saw Anna's video! It was a really interesting site to have a look around. It gives a really good impression of what the layout of a Roman encampment would have been like 2000 or so years back!

    Nice one Des. I love looking around these Roman forts. Incredible history. Really interested in the Roman period. Accentuated by visiting Rome a few years back and realising how much more advanced they were compared to Britain
    Hardknott Fort is a favourite - brings home what the Roman soldiers would have experienced.
    Such a lovely area there - we missed Carnaerfon a few weeks back - those ring of castles is amazing
    Nice one mate and great shout out for Anna and Alf. 👍👍👍

      Hi Dave. A lot left to the imagination on this one (I think naughty King Edward pinched the stone for his castle 😁) but fascinating to see the scale and layout of the place! Of the castles, I think Beaumaris is my favourite. Just the right mix of ruin/remains for me 😁

    I didn't know there was a Roman fort in Caernarfon. What I found amusing is how this one was just merrily sitting there in suburbia, with a road going past and folk's back gardens backing on to it. I wonder if the locals ever turn up an odd artefact when they are doing the garden? 🤔🙂. Bye for now, Chris

    • @DesGreene
      @DesGreene  Рік тому

      Hi Chris. Sad thing is, I'm pretty sure houses were built over a lot of it. And of course, Edward 1st pinched most of the stone for his castle. Fascinating to see the layout so clearly though! I never knew it was there either until seeing Anna & Alf's video! ATB👍

    You know me and how right up my street this is. There is a viral tik tok going around about how many times guys think about the roman empire on a daily basis and I think this just added 1 more thought about how clever the Romans were. I can't imagine 1000 people there so much organised chaos lol. Scotland didn't really have much dealings with the Romans. Near me there is a Roman bath house and we have the Antonine Wall which cut across the entire central belt. We sort of sent them packing ahahah. They were brutal but so clever. A dream of mine would be to go to Pompei which they are still discovering things at. These places give a small glimpse into what life was like. Thanks for sharing a bit of fascinating history. Hope your well. Speak soon sir 👍😀👍🥾🥾

    • @DesGreene
      @DesGreene  Рік тому +1

      Hi Scott. Places like this are real food for the imagination aren't they? I'm sure there would have been more to see if Edward 1st hadn't pinched the stone for his castle down below! But even that is part of history.
      If I was right about that small hole being the baths, you wouldn't have wanted to be 999th in the queue, would you? 😂

    We were booked in at the Premier Inn at Caernarfon for 4 nights when I was going to climb Snowdon again but all that was scrapped when Covid hit. Looked a decent walk out, especially as I love anything Roman but good to see you getting my normal Wales weather but nice there was a pub close by. So, still never been to Caernarfon, was it worth a stay there? Cheers Alan

      Hi Alan. Definitely an interesting place to have a look around. Some nice pubs etc, but not sure what it's like for evenings out/eating out etc. So not sure if it's good for a stopover. We were on a farm campsite about twenty minutes walk away, which suited us. Cheers for watching and catch you soon👍
