Greetings from France! I like doing stained necks without lacquer finish, after a few weeks playing with them, the stain starts to fade away particularly on the back part. Gives it an awesome vintage look

Bonjour, thanks for watching! I really like that idea, I will have to try that. Viewers in France, that is really cool. Cheers!

Not sure I like either method. But it looks really good 👍

Thank you!. I get this isn't for everybody. The small budget made me choose between Solo stain or fixed bridge and flat wound humbucker. I admit, the fixed bridge and humbucker won. Thanks for watching!

I’m excited to see how the neck comes out with the final finish. It looks really cool.

    Hi there.
I really like the vinegar/steel wool method (because it's cheap and fun) but I found, the one time I has tried it, that the neck left a faint odor of vinegar on the palm of your hand whenever playing. Do you think it goes away after a time ? (but maybe putting a coat of laquer resolves the issue.)
Another thing ; i've tried staining a fretboard black, but when filing the sides of the neck to remove the sharp ends of the frets after having put these on, I found myself all of the stain in the process. Do you plan to do some more painting once the frets have been installed on your neck ?

Great questions. The vinegar/steel wool mix I used in the video is at least 5 years old. It didn't have much of a vinegar smell, just slightly, but it does have a distinct odor. I was concerned there might be a lingering smell, but not really. I think anything you put on the neck after the vinegar should seal it, so you don't get the smell. Time should help decrease the smell. The neck in the video also had thinned down paint applied, three coats, that should help seal it also. And I am going to do a lacquer coat to seal it all. But left unsealed, probably just time.
I plan on taping of the top and sides of the fretboard when I start dressing the fret ends and just being careful. But it happens. The tape should help prevent any scratches. The initial filing, when I take the big file and run down the length of the neck, and the fret ends are just about the same level as the fretboard wood, I just slow down and try to be careful. But it is going to happen, a scratch, or a nick. On the necks I have done with a clear lacquer, I usually finish by buffing the neck with XXXX Super fine steel wool. It gives the neck a matte finish and will buff in any small scratches. That does pose a problem for me, I want this neck glossy, so I just have to take my time ,be careful, and use tape. Maybe we can get someone else to join in and tell us their method. Thinks for watching and thanks for the questions. I will address this in my next video. Thanks!

    Hello, thanks for the video
How long does it generally take you to build a CBG?

Thanks for watching! With filming about 3 weeks. The cbg style that I have built in the videos could be done in 8 hours or less, broken up over a couple of days . I let the scarf joint dry overnight as well as the fretboard glue-up. I also let the lacquer cure for a couple of days before fitting it in the box. With a quick set glue , like 5 minute epoxy, 5 hours or less. I am estimating. My time in the shop is broken up and usually only a 2 to 3 hour work window . With filming at least an hour is setup and tear down. In a 40 hour week, full time working on guitars, should be able to at least five a week or more. That would be awesome cbg as a full time gig! I hope that helped. I am going to work on a better answer. Thanks!

@@WoodPortGuitars I enjoy watching you work, on my 3rd build at the moment. You provide a lot of useful information that has improved my builds.
What I mean was, the entire process of building a CBG from start to finish

From first layout to playing the cbg, 5 to 6 days. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate your views and comments.
