This is a video about building and finishing up this 3 string cigar box guitar that I call 23 Black. It has a 23 inch scale and a thin body. It has a slight back angle at the neck to body joint and an angle at the headstock, known as a scarf joint. I show a few of the details of building this guitar and also play it in the video so you can hear that Dual Rail Humbucker Pickup from MGBguitars.co...

I am greatly indebted to a viewer and commenter for this explanation and the catalyst behind this video. My explanation in my last video about Intonation and Bridges was inadequate. Many thanks to hurdy.

I go over how to intonate a 3 string cigar box guitar. Two common bridges are the fixed one piece and the floating bridge. I talk about both. I then tell the story of why I call this black guitar the Nemesis. And I play the guitar, some clean, some with distortion. Hope you enjoy the video! Thanks for Watching! #woodportguitars #cbg

What Now Comacho Cigar Box Guitar ?
Переглядів 2486 місяців тому
What now. While drilling larger screw holes in the lid of this pretty and shiny Comacho cigar box, I chipped the finish. Not just a little. Not repairable. So I scraped off the rest of the clear coat and sanded. Should I do the same to the rest of the box or leave it original and paint only the lid? Tell me what you think. I have to decide pretty quick, I'm really wanting to play this guitar!

Cigar Box Guitar - What about your box?

Working on a 3 string cigar box guitar using a Comacho box and a 1 piece bridge, I call it a hardtail bridge. I also talk a little bit about boxes, and give measurements of a couple guitar boxes as examples. I mark and cut the neck slot in the Comacho box. It takes a few test fits, and it fits snug. I lay a straight edge from the string saddle up the fretboard to see how close or how far the ac...

Your videos are so enlightening and very informative,I thank you for answering my last guest ion about the finish of the guitar
Thank you! That is an awesome compliment, I am grateful. Thank you for watching and communicating, I do appreciate it. Cheers!
Found some black corners online at reliable hardware Hope this helps
Thanks for the info. I did find that brand, but couldn't get it for a week. I went with a different brand. Should be here tomorrow!. Thank you for commenting! I appreciate you. Cheers!
Awesome work!!
Thank you! Cheers!
I dont see the link for the Foam?
I just added it to the video description. www.woodworkerexpress.com/fastcap-kaizen-20mm-black-organizational-foam.html Thanks! Cheers!
I dont see the link for the Foam?
It has been so long I am having trouble finding it. As soon as I do.... Thanks!
Very Cool Bro!
Thanks!
great video, thanks. Is it hard to cut frets with regular fret cutter/plyer ...?
Thank you. The longer the handle is, the easier it will be to cut, you get more leverage. With the short handle pair, about 4 inches long, I sometimes have to use both hands. Ling handles and sharp, make it easy. Thanks for watching! Cheers!
Thanks a lot sir. @@WoodPortGuitars
Very nice. I never thought of using clear spray paint. Im gonna give it a try. Thanks.
I used that partly because it is what I had on hand, and partly I had not seen anyone using it, and most importantly, I like it. Glad you do too! Thanks for commenting and watching, I appreciate you! Cheers
What kind of finish did you use.I like it very much
It was Rustoleum 2x Clear Semi- Gloss. 3 to 4 coats with a light sanding in between with 320 grit. I do talk about that finish in more of my videos, I still use it. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching! Cheers!
Try using GREEN frog tape...or check chart different colors for different adhesive strength
I had heard of low adhesion tapes, just haven't looked into it much. Thanks for the recommendation, and thanks for commenting! And Thanks for watching! Cheers!
Hope you don't mind, I copied your scarf joint fixture, works great!
That is awesome! I do not mind at all. That is why I do it. Makes me happy!! And if you have improvement ideas, please share. Cheers!
@@WoodPortGuitars Are you in central Florida?
I will be adding stops to one side.
Yes, Eustis area.
@@WoodPortGuitars I'm in Orlando, Working on box #35. just a hobby.
The Macanudo’s really sound good. Still looking forward to the Pure Evil…
Glad to hear that. The Evil is coming! Thanks Steve! Cheers!
Thumbs 👍, you could use straps to stop case opening too far😊
Thank you. I will use some kind of strap on this one with the black hardware. Thanks for watching! Cheers!
They don't have to match... I like the contrast.
It's growing on me too. More on that in Wednesdays video. Thanks. Cheers
That is a beautiful guitar!!! I know I have said it before, but it’s worth saying again……it is such a joy watching your exactness with everything. Always fun watching you work bud. Love your shirt too!!
Wow, thank you!, Cheers!!
@@WoodPortGuitars man yeah! Thank YOU for sharing!!
Nice job!! Looks& sounds great!
Thank you! And it plays great! Cheers
Nice! I have a super thin box that is absolutely beatiful and i want to use it for a build. I dont think its deep enough for a Neck and Heel. Only a neck. Any ideas? How deep was that box? On video, it looks close to mine...
The box is 1 1/2" deep on the inside. You could do it with a thinner heel, worth a try. And, I have the hardware for a case. Case for the Nemesis should be next video. Thanks again!
It's not a Les Paul, hell it's not even a cigar box...
Thanks for watching!
Great work Bro. Don't mind the haters! Some people just have a shifty existence and wanna share it with others
Very nice build thumb 👍
Thank you! I appreciate that. Thanks for watching!
Great work!
Thank you! Cheers!
Strip the box and stain it like the neck.
That would probably be the easiest, cheapest and quickest solution. Since I already have the dye. It's definitely a possibility. Thanks ! Thanks for watching and commenting.!
I am building my first one,you are a good instructor my friend
Thank you, I appreciate that. Good luck with your build, they are fun. Thanks for watching!
See if you can a yellow, gold, red thin Monte Cristo all wood Cigar Box?
I was thinking I might sand the paper off and down to the raw wood, and just paint the box. I am getting some good ideas here. Thanks for commenting and thanks for watching!
Maybe one way to go would be to remove all of the cigar box lining and replace it with some japanese washi tape of your liking ? That's what I was tempted to do with some of my more busted cigar boxes.
I had to look this product up. I hadn't heard of this before. Looks like something I could use on the cbg's and more! Thank for letting me know about washi tape! Thank you for watching.
Have you considered replacing the tape edges with black artist's tape? I am a bit more non-conventional in my approach to builds, but I think the black tape would look good with the black headstock and general theme.
I had to look that up. I didn't know such a thing existed. I like it. Made me think of simulating the binding on guitars, with the tape on cbg's. Awesome. Thank you for sharing, and thank you for watching.
That CBG looks incredible!!!!
Thanks! Much appreciated!
@@WoodPortGuitars man yeah! It is absolutely amazing!!! Love your work!
Thanks!
What products did you use for the original finish?
The paint is Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultracover Flat Black. The clear coat is the same, Rustoleum 2X Clear Lacquer Semi-Gloss. 3 - 4 coats of each paint and clear, with a light sanding with 320 grit sandpaper , between clear coats. I use this paint because I can get it at my local Ace Hardware, close to the shop. I am sure there are better paints, but I am happy with the results I get from the Rustoleum. Thanks D!
Wow!! Beautiful!!
Thank you! Thanks for watching! Cheers!
Great sound aswell.
Thanks, I like it too. Thanks for watching!
Cool! Use a Noisegate on your pedalboard, or most modeling amps have them.... that will solve your feedback issues.
Good idea! Cheers!
How the heck did you scratch that up? You could put a pickguard on it. I’m waiting on Pure Evil.. 😊
Pick scratches? Not sure they were in a weird spot. Thinking about the pickgaurd material. I have to finish up the current build first, I call it little blackie. Thanks Steve!!
Of course because I searched for Del Puckett's Just Tempered and Equal Tempered videos what pops up on my feed when it refreshed? Del's "the sound of a Just Tempered fretboard" from 6 years ago! 🤣
😉 thanks for highlighting my method! (That's a first other than someone replying "You suck! 😆) I learned from the best: Del Puckett... An added note: All my intonating is done by ear, not because I think it's better than using a tuner but it's just what I do 🤣 If you want to get technical good intonation also depends on which fretting method you use, Equal Tempered, Just Intonation or Just Tempered... Del Puckett gives excellent explanations and examples in two videos: "Just Intonation Template Explained" and ""Just Tempered" ... check those out!
Thank You! I always like hearing from you!
Good info. I start with the middle string and pivot the bridge on the center correct harmonic. It all works out either way.
That's cool. I will have to try that way. Thanks! Thanks for watching! Cheers!
One quibble, and it's minor... it seems to me if you pivot from the middle string the low G string will lengthen (which is what you want) but the high g string will shorten (which you don't want) throwing the intonation out of balance (for want of a better term) ... But, if it works why quibble? 😉
I like the look of that neck jig. Think I need to make one. I use a couple of tiny wee nails cut off close to the neck surface to just stop the fretboard slipping. Subscribed now btw. Cheers from Scotland.
Welcome Scotland! Thanks for watching and subscribing! The jig has been a big help, multiple uses. I tried the nails on a scarf joint and had alignment issues. I have to work on my technique, I'll try it again. Thank you for commenting. It's funny how a comment can motivate me to try something again. Thanks! Cheers!
Both look great. Big fan of the Shinto also.
Thank you! The shinto is awesome !
Good info.
Glad you think so!
Great method. I pin my scarf joints with a 1/4 dowl. Cutting head shape before gluing is a lesson i learned once, lol.
I am going to try a pinning method on my next scarf joints. Still working on my process. Thanks for watching! Cheers!
What an exalent build,im very impressed, keep the awesome build videos coming, love you brother, awesome
Many thanks! Cheers!
Short and sweet, thanks! Just finished two builds and will try this out. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! All credit goes to hurdygurdyguy1. Awesome explanation!
Watching your trials reminded me of mine and I don't feel so lonely now! LOL Seems like some thing always pops up and we just learn how unimportant the word "can't" is!! And we learn and end up with and even BETTER outcome. Thank You. I will carry on now. (just had Rt arm rotator cuff repair:{) Love your videos, helps pass the time.
Thank you for watching! I am glad it is helping pass the time, that can be a lengthy recovery. Take care of that shoulder and keep watching!! Get Well! Cheers!
Chock full of information!! Thanks, I found if you put your rattle can paint in hot water for about ten minutes , it will flow better and reduce the amount of paint globs coming out of the can.
Thank you. I didn't do the hot water bath, but I did have it sitting in the Florida sun for a while. I will do the bath for now on. Thanks for watching! Cheers!
May I recommend Analine dye for colour matching on the Monte Cristo. For a glassy finish sand through 400/800/1000 grit sandpaper, finish with rottenstone pumice. Buff out with "Gel-Gloss kitchen & bath polish. Consider tagua nut for fingerboard dots on dark neck ( available at Lee Valley hardware.)
Thank you for the information, that is awesome. Unfortunately, the damage has been done. I have already dyed the neck with a yellow dye. My colour match did not go well and actually, I really don't like the yellow now. I now have to decide what to do about it. Sand it off, paint the neck, I haven't decided yet. Thank you so much for the information, you have mentioned a couple of products I am not familiar with, more to learn. Thank you for watching and thank you for the info! I will try this on a future build!
@@WoodPortGuitars If you haven't sealed the wood the dye should wash off (mostly). Try mixing different dyes to get the desired tone. Starting on some scrap is always a good idea ☺️.
I will try washing it off, see how that goes. I did try on some scrap of the same wood, and I thought I had the match, but when the whole neck was done, yikes. I only had green, yellow and white available. I used the white to tone down the yellow, but not enough. Thanks Bruce! Cheers!
@@WoodPortGuitars reducing the concentration may also work.
subbed ! thank you !
Thank you! Thanks for watching!
Loved your determination. Looks and sounds great!! Thanks for the video
Thanks. I am really liking this guitar.
That neck jig is very well designed.
Thank you. It works great.
Im interested in the Case build....
I have been putting it off, but if there is interest... I have to finish up a couple of build videos, then the case it is . Thanks for the motivation! Cheers!
Keep the red box and paint the kid high gloss black. Can I ask why you’re using machine screws in wood? Never seen anyone ever use a tap in wood
Thank you for the input. That was my first thought also. But it is now all black and shiny. As far as the screws, I learned this a long time ago in woodworking. The reason I wanted something different. A lot of cbg builders use the fancy washer and bugle head wood screws, me included. I wanted something different. I wanted black, and I wanted the rounded top, stove bolt, I think, is the right name. Purely for looks. If I could have found wood threads with that head, I would have used those instead. I could have used threaded inserts, but I didn't have any in the shop. So I used this old trick. Only works in hardwood, I wouldn't try it with pine or even poplar. I will take water thin, super glue, and coat the wood threads for more strength. The main forces on the lid are pressing the lid down to the box, no real shear forces side to side or up of the box. I know it seems a little strange, I thought so also when I first saw it done. Thank so much for asking about it. I will talk a little more about it in the video when I assemble and play the cbg. That's my longest reply ever. Thanks for watching and comments and questions.
Loving the Flathead box you have there! Having recently got into building CBGs - I realised that any number of things/boxes/picture frames/cheeseboards/breadboards have such potential. Don't get stressed about 'boxes' - just get creative and make some sounds I discovered! Keep up the good work!
So true. Thanks for watching!
