Mike, your videos are very informative and really made my DIY install (RUR199e) a breeze. I had a gas company run my gas line and I ran the electrical for an outlet and plumbed in the water lines (yes, I pulled permits and had a code inspection!). A key point is to bleed the gas line and water lines BEFORE powering on the unit. I did that, very well, I thought; but, I got a code 63 on the first run. I shut down the unit, burped the pressure relief and it fired right up on the second go. All of your instructions are logical and well-thought-out. Thank you for making the videos!!!

This was an exact replacement for the old one that lasted about 10 years. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx7yWIKcrbA9KMHkGSfcgxW2lsjHT6B8Sh The top of my mitigation tube by my roofline was just a 90 elbow which allowed too much debris to fall down into the fan, eventually ruining it. Without this issue, I bet it would have kept running another 10 years. When I replaced this fan, I added an extra elbow joint so the top tube now it does a 180, which should solve that problem. The radon guys around here wanted to charge me a $300 diagnostic fee, then parts/labor (probably close to $600 total). I installed this all by myself in about an hour for the cost of the fan; it would probably be even easier/faster with two people. FYI the manufacturer's warranty greatly differs depending on whether you install it yourself (1 yr warranty) or have a licensed installer do it (10 yrs).
Mike, Could you talk a little about how to go about installing a dedicated return line system. Does it need to run to the furtherest hot water faucet in the house, even if we rarely use the sink in that part of the house or can it run to the furtherest facet that you want hot water to be available? Would PEX be a good choice for the dedicated return line? How about check valves? Do you use more than one and if so where? Thank you.

Hello Mike, Thank you for very informative videos and generosity with you knowledge and expertise, I have installed a Rinnai CU199iN in a house, does this unit compatible with a recirculating pump? I have installed a Grundfos circulating pump and the crossover valve but I don't get any recirculation, any insight would be greatly appreciated, Thank you
Mike, Can you vent a condensing rur unit into the garage? my house is a 4 story townhouse with nieghbors attached on both sides and the unit will be placed in a furnace room that is right next to the garage as you walk into the house from the garage. please advise
Hey Mike - great video. Quick question. How do you connect to condensation pump so that if you have a malfunction at the condensation pump, the water heater shuts off or times out? I have two RSC-199in units and I’m not sure where to connect the two wires on the pump. The TSB from renanai says to connect it to white and green wire by condensation discharge pipes but we can’t find those wires.
I am considering a recirculating Rinnai. But I see that the warranty is good for only 3 years instead of 10 years for the recirc units. This has me some concerned.
Mike - I hope you are doing well as I love your videos. I had a RUR98i installed 6 1/2 years ago. When I watched this video @ 9.52 you make the comment "a nice screen to prevent bugs from getting in". I suspect a nice screen was not installed on my venting as I have seen spiders under the air intake cap on the left. Do you have a video that can point to me on how to install that screen? Thank you
Hello Mike I have a Question is galvanized pipe ok to use were U R...? In California requirements for gas line supposed to be iron pipe or black pipe, thank you for the instructional video
Here in Florida all those outlets in the garage are protected by a GFI I would recommend you put a separate circuit either protected by a GFI outlet or breaker. Mike
Mike, you are awesome. These videos are so well made and you do an excellent job explaining everything. You are inspiring me to attempt to do my own install of a RUR199eN. This brings me to my question, do you have a video of an outdoor installation? I am leaning towards going with an external unit (located in CA) because of the venting hassle and not wanting to put a (large) hole in my wall for venting. I'm also worried I mess up the roof connection given the multiple angles (slopped roof). Plus I wanted the extra room in my garage. Anyway initially, I was intimidated on powering an exterior unit, until I watched your video on outdoor power solutions. I have stucco exterior walls and will need to make holes for the gas, hot, and cold lines. What is the best way to do clean, air-tight connections through stucco for these lines? Also, are the exterior units loud? If so, I may revert back to mounting it indoors as in my garage it would be in a closet. Lastly, do you recommend vibration isolation pads when mounting the unit to lessen the noise? If so can you recommend something? Thank you again for all of these videos. I created a playlist of them and have gone through half of them in the last 48 hours.
I just bought a rur98ip and all of my fixtures are under 25 feet, first floor only, going through a auqasasa unit for well water with a UV attachment..... and I want to use a pex manifold as my distribution unit for water to the house because I feel it would be easier to do and change/add in the future.... am I right to think I can’t build a recirculating line into this setup or would I someone how be able to do so? Furthermore, is there a benefit to the recirculation line versus the internal recirculation in regards to the life of the unit?
I installed a RUR98i N with drain valve, check valve, and ball valve on the dedicated return "Hot water line". I also have a check vale on the cold supply line. My question is ...... Is it necessary to install a "thermal expansion tank ????????
Mike, thank you for all posting. I am trying to install tankless heater and I see other videos and they used copper pipe for water line, but you used PVC(I am guessing)? what is benefit to use PVC and which is better option to use? If PVC is better, what kind of PVC pipe should I use specifically? Thank you,
I have an RUR98i. A thermal bypass valve is not installed at any of the fixtures, but the screen is installed. I have the plug. Did they make a mistake when they installed my unit? I have a dedicated return line but the FILTER is installed. Is it bad that I do not have the PLUG installed? What problems can I run into?
If using the cold water as a return does this cause the cold water pipe to have warm water in it? So when you turn on cold water would you get warm water at first.
@@ThatTanklessGuy Thanks so much for the info. found out that my Rinnai RU160IP does not have the return pump in it. But I can put one on it. So for now I'm just going to use it as is. Great video's, I have been an Electrician for over 30 years, I should make some video's to help people out too.
With a concentric vent doesn't the Exhaust "C0" come back into the vent since the fresh air inlet and exhaust outlet are so close together? Seems like it would just circulate back into the fresh air part of the concentric vent ? What am I not understanding here?
Will this supply a shower that produces 6 gpm of flow give a water temp. rise of 65 degrees? According to Rinnai, that degree rise will put out about 5-6gpm. But some of that water I assume will be supplied from the cold water side.
hI MIKE, may I ask please what can I do is the installation don't have return water I need to make return water or not is necessary, could you please can you give some ideal. thanks a lot for help me.
My builder plans to put in two of these unit in my new construction home. How do they work in tandem? Is it a primary and secondary and they are wired together somehow? Thanks
I love the videos Mike! I’m about to install a Rannai V94IN. My question is, I have the normal cold and hot copper lines that went into my water tank heater. I also have a red line that comes from the hot water spigot at the bottom of the tank, to a recirculation pump then goes into the wall. What do I with this red line and do I need to reuse the recirculating pump. Lastly, do I really need the large expansion tank? Thanks Ross
Hi Mike, first thanks for all your videos. I have a RU199I heater that I want to use with an external re-circulation pump. Does this tank-less heater have the Circ-Logic built in or not. I am quite confused already with all those options.
Hi Mike, I have a RUR199eP and I have a question about the "terminals for control" or "Additional Controller" terminals. Can these terminals be use to connect the unit to a Building management system? As in a set of dry relay contacts that would OPEN for ON and CLOSE for OFF? I have considered using 1 leg of a mechnical style water heater time to turn of my unit during non-peak time ex. 9 pm - 6 am. What are you thoughts?
vbbartlett both will make the unit work very good. The double vent worked better on longer runs and it’s cheaper then the concentric vent pipe. ( you must use schedule 40 pipe) The concentric vent works better on the short runs like what you see in the video. I hope that was helpful. Thanks for the comment Mike
vbbartlett so 14 plus feet, how man elbows because every elbow is equivalent to 5 feet of pipe. It would be perfect if the vent could be as straight as possible. Mike
The run of pipe would go up and turn 90 deg at the ceiling and to 10ft directly out above the sill plate. At worst it would have on additional 45 deg to go out at a different location. (only because the furnace intakes might be too close to where I hoped it would exit.) I believe code says I have to be 5' from the two air vents for the util room.
My thermal bypass never got installed ( I have it in hand ) but the screen in installed. I cannot find the plug anywhere. I think they made a mistake when they installed my unit. I have a dedicated line but the FILTER is installed. Is it bad that I do not have the PLUG installed? What problems can I run into?
Mike, any info on how to install recirculating pump, Grundfos GTK15 or other brand, without a designated return line, I have the Rinnai RUC 98in which has Circ logic installed, but could go with another type pump under furthest sink, thanks
Mike, 2 weeks ago I installed the rinnai v94i unit. On 2 occasions while taking a shower the water went ice cold. I had to turn the faucet off, then back on to get hot water again. What causes this and how do I fix it?
@@TheBuddylab Thank you so much. I didn’t know what that line was used for, all I knew it had metal fittings and they used plex. It was leaking and when I installed it as you suggested with the new material. You were 100% correct the old metal fitting were corroded out inside the plex pipe. There was nothing there except a little slither of thread left. Is there a way to get more pressure throughout my home. I only have 1 tankless, but I have a 2 story home? Thank you for what you do!!
Great video, clear and quite informative. I would like to install a RUR98iN unit at my home through a certified rinnai plumber while I provide the necessary material. I have these two questions : 1- Is this the vent used in the video a "Rinnai 223176PP 12-Inch Condensing Horizontal Termination Kit"? (12 Inch is good enough for my case). If not can someone point me to the right name to search on Amazon for e.g. 2- Does the valve kit come with the RUR98iN unit? + Would this valve kit be better: "Webstone 44043PR 3/4-Inch IPS Isolator EXP E2 Tankless Water Heater Service Valve Kit with Clean Brass Construction"? Thank You.
The vent is a Ubbink horizontal termination kit comes with a 12” pipe two coolers one elbow . The box must say for condensing appliances only. The valve kit that comes with the unit is very good.عصام Issam عبد الله AbdAllah
Greetings and thanks for the helpful videos. I have the rur98i everything installed as you described using a dedicated return line. pump Circ pump turns on and seconds later error code 63. I've checked through the code troubleshooting guide with no luck, Code 63 over and over. any suggestions?

Mike, I have a manifold type (home run) type plumbing system and recently installed a RUR199iP system which of course has the build-in circulation pump. . I do not have a dedicated return system so I installed the crossover kit that came with the RUR199ip at the farthest faucet to the system. I am not sure how much the circulation pump is actually helping to get hot water sooner and have been considering converting my plumbing system back to a trunk-and-branch type system. My question is what would be the effect if if I were to put crossover valves at each of my plumbing fixtures since as each are on their own plumbing circuits, instead of converting the plumbing system back to the traditional style of system. Thank you. Larry

Excellent video. Very thorough. Thanks for sharing!
Where is that gas regulator at?
Mike,
Can you vent a condensing rur unit into the garage? my house is a 4 story townhouse with nieghbors attached on both sides and the unit will be placed in a furnace room that is right next to the garage as you walk into the house from the garage.
please advise
It depends on how big the garage is? I don’t recommend doing that but sometimes it’s necessary.
Mike’s Wood Shop garage is 15’ by 30’
Hey Mike - great video.
I have a RUC80IN read whole manual. I don't think it has a pump. but it can control a pump. I do not plan to use one.
Thanks for the video.
Trying to find a video showing the proper connection for a recirculating pump to a RU 199 IN. Does the provided pig tail provide 120v to the pump?
I am considering a recirculating Rinnai. But I see that the warranty is good for only 3 years instead of 10 years for the recirc units. This has me some concerned.
Where does the remote controller hook up on the rinnai outside unit rl75e
Mike - I hope you are doing well as I love your videos. I had a RUR98i installed 6 1/2 years ago. When I watched this video @ 9.52 you make the comment "a nice screen to prevent bugs from getting in". I suspect a nice screen was not installed on my venting as I have seen spiders under the air intake cap on the left. Do you have a video that can point to me on how to install that screen? Thank you
Hello Mike I have a Question is galvanized pipe ok to use were U R...? In California requirements for gas line supposed to be iron pipe or black pipe, thank you for the instructional video
Hi, Mike, thanks for you show you knowledge that is very helpful.
is that code violation electrical outlet right under right side of the tankless. hum..
Nope electrical can be near the unit. Outlet is off of a GFI down the wall.
Hello the outlet in the vid didn't look like a GFI version is that needed since it so closet o a water source.
Here in Florida all those outlets in the garage are protected by a GFI I would recommend you put a separate circuit either protected by a GFI outlet or breaker. Mike
great informative video thank you. the grumpus/bypass cost ??
Jogo g that comes with the Rinnai unit. I figure it would cost around $ 20.00 Thanks for the comment Mike
Florida doesn't make you vent at least 36" from a opening window or door? Clean install by the way, we do a lot of these in Colorado.
Great videos love them. Much thanks . Have to say you sound just like Peter Griffin.
Lol never heard of that but thank you very much
Mike, you are awesome.
Call me at +19042385349 and I will go over it with you Mike
I installed a RUR98i N with drain valve, check valve, and ball valve on the dedicated return "Hot water line". I also have a check vale on the cold supply line. My question is ...... Is it necessary to install a "thermal expansion tank ????????
Phil you can if you want to, but it’s not necessary. Thanks for the comment Mike
Why are you using galvanized pipe for the gas supply?
great video Mike... you have some amazing videos... keep up the good work!
What problems can I run into?
does the rinnai condensing unit need an expansion tank ? thanks so much
If using the cold water as a return does this cause the cold water pipe to have warm water in it? So when you turn on cold water would you get warm water at first.
no the bypass valve had a thermal activated piece in it that shuts it off when 110 degree water hits it.
No it doesn’t the way the vent end is designed and the power of the fan it keeps both apart from each other
@@ThatTanklessGuy Thanks for your reply. It just made no sense as when the two 2 inch PVC pipes are used for that they must be kept 12 inches apart?
Sir, looks like you have a softener next to the heater, do you have an instruction on how to install that type of softener with the rinnai?
Will this supply a shower that produces 6 gpm of flow give a water temp. rise of 65 degrees? According to Rinnai, that degree rise will put out about 5-6gpm. But some of that water I assume will be supplied from the cold water side.
hI MIKE, may I ask please what can I do is the installation don't have
return water I need to make return water or not is necessary, could you please can you give some ideal.
thanks a lot for help me.
E mail me at economyplmbg@aol.con and I will send you my phone number so we can go over it. Mike
My builder plans to put in two of these unit in my new construction home. How do they work in tandem? Is it a primary and secondary and they are wired together somehow?
Thanks
Can an outdoor model such as Rinnai RU199eN be mounted in attached garage when you vent it like a indoor model ?
No it can not
@@TheBuddylab Ok , I see that there is no exhaust or intake on top of this model. Thanks.
Why do I need a regular? My gas supply is 7 inches of water column for my interior install of a RSC160iN.
You only need a regulator if it’s 2 pounds natural gas or 10 pounds propane. If you have 7” you don’t need one. Mike
Is there a reason these might not be putting out very hot water? Mine is set to 140 and even the the closest fixture doesn’t get very hot
Thanks
Ross
Are there any technical settings to be made inside unit before use?new unit.
Hi Mike, first thanks for all your videos. I have a RU199I heater that I want to use with an external re-circulation pump.
Does this tank-less heater have the Circ-Logic built in or not. I am quite confused already with all those options.
Adi Satzinger call me at +19042385349 after 6pm tonight and I will go over it with you
Mike, do you have to install a check valve on the dedicated recirc line to make sure the cold doesn’t back flow into the hot?
Hi Mike, I have a RUR199eP and I have a question about the "terminals for control" or "Additional Controller" terminals. Can these terminals be use to connect the unit to a Building management system? As in a set of dry relay contacts that would OPEN for ON and CLOSE for OFF? I have considered using 1 leg of a mechnical style water heater time to turn of my unit during non-peak time ex. 9 pm - 6 am. What are you thoughts?
First thanks for the videos! Can you describe the conditions you would consider using the dual vents compared to the concentric venting?
vbbartlett both will make the unit work very good. The double vent worked better on longer runs and it’s cheaper then the concentric vent pipe.
( you must use schedule 40 pipe) The concentric vent works better on the short runs like what you see in the video. I hope that was helpful. Thanks for the comment Mike
Yes thank you very much. Im having it installed in a basement and the length is 15+ ft so provides me a good idea on what I should expect.
vbbartlett so 14 plus feet, how man elbows because every elbow is equivalent to 5 feet of pipe. It would be perfect if the vent could be as straight as possible. Mike
The run of pipe would go up and turn 90 deg at the ceiling and to 10ft directly out above the sill plate. At worst it would have on additional 45 deg to go out at a different location. (only because the furnace intakes might be too close to where I hoped it would exit.) I believe code says I have to be 5' from the two air vents for the util room.
vbbartlett I’m glad it helped. Mike
Just curious if this unit doesnt need a pressure releif valve before the water inlet as i didnt see one.
Is that galvanized pipe you used to connect the gas? Also why use cpvc instead of pex
Mike, any info on how to install recirculating pump, Grundfos GTK15 or other brand, without a designated return line, I have the Rinnai RUC 98in which has Circ logic installed, but could go with another type pump under furthest sink, thanks
don smith use the Taco demand system with the wireless remote.
Rinnai or AO Smith --which do you prefer or recommend for a "Tank less" application?
Seriously? Who was the person on the camera .....the pet dog?
.
Mike, 2 weeks ago I installed the rinnai v94i unit. On 2 occasions while taking a shower the water went ice cold. I had to turn the faucet off, then back on to get hot water again. What causes this and how do I fix it?
I have this unit, could you do a video or videos of cleaning the burner and heat exchangers.
What is the code that I might encounter if the condensation line fills? Also if I don’t have a “T” should I add one?
Code 25 and yes install a T
I have these two questions :
1- Is this the vent used in the video a "Rinnai 223176PP 12-Inch Condensing Horizontal Termination Kit"?
Love your videos, isn't the vent too close to the window? 4' minimum I thought
Greetings and thanks for the helpful videos. I have the rur98i everything installed as you described using a dedicated return line. pump Circ pump turns on and seconds later error code 63. I've checked through the code troubleshooting guide with no luck, Code 63 over and over. any suggestions?
MjrSlakr call me at +19042385349 after 6 pm tonight and I will go over it t
thank you will do
Mike we talked a month ago regarding code 63 and the draining procedure necessary to cure the code. I need to review with you again. I also left you a text message on your phone. I know your very busy and your time is appreciated thank you @@TheBuddylab
Mikes wood shop Hi mike .....I’m Up here in the state Of CT where I’m Supplied by well water and About To DIY An RuR199.....any tips u can Share?
Is that a shark bite ball valve and 3/4 90? Lol that’s hilarious!! Proper installation?!?!? Guy uses shark bites lol!!
I have a question for you, I have a R94XiN can it be converted to propane?
what is you have a small house do you leave the plug in if not installing the bypass valve
Where are you from? An appliance over 100,000btu vented within 36" of an opening to a building is a no-go according to our code
Hi Mike.
What you can tell me about rinnai E85SRN?
Is there an expansion tank on the system? It's required.
Es usted un gran maestro
Thank you.
Larry
Mike, I forgot to say thank you very much for all your informative videos. I watched them over and over as I was installing my first Rinnai tankless water heater!
Mike, thanks for the info! Would you recommend the condensate neutralizer kit? I’m draining into a condensate pump which ejects outside.
U MUST put the nuetralizer kit...the condensate is so acidic it will eat through your drain pipe
can the rur199in be vented near a AC unit outiside?
do you install Rinnai tankless in florida?
This seemed a little bit more chaotic then the last one. I had a had time following everything you were talking about.
When using the cross over valve, does the cold water run warm or does it stay cold?
Thx
Gregg Kennedy the cold water will get a little warm very slight. It it stays warm or gets hot you have a bad cross over valve. I hope this answered your question
Great video, very informative.
Mark Federowski thank you very much
Can I use PEX Pipe to install tankless water heater?
