  • Ogea didn't cause this crisis, but they're feeling it. In this episode we talk to the village leaders about their efforts to raise the earth by hand and the impact that rising sea levels will continue to have on their village. It's not our usual type of travel adventure, but maybe more impactful as we try to give back more than we take...

ABOUT US: We are a family of five sailing around the world on our "dream boat," a performance catamaran named "Archer." Ten years ago B.K. ("before kids"), we sailed a Lagoon 380 named "Honeymoon" halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences via UA-cam and, by happenstance, created one of the first "sailing channels." We also realized what an incredible experience we were having and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with kids.
OUR ROUTE has taken us from the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States down to the Caribbean and through the Panama Canal. We have dealt with massive repairs in the South Pacific, the Coronavirus lock down in New Zealand, a Category 5 Cyclone in Fiji, and now we are cruising in Covid Free Australia. Videos for all of this to come!

I love your channel, really do. The class room lesson was painful though. Currently I live in Oklahoma, central United States for those from other lands, and I can walk out my back door and find fossils of sea creatures that once swam in a sea that covered the central part of North America. As I write this I'm looking at a Cephalopod setting on my desk that I found just 30 miles from my house while fishing. That Cephalopod swam just down from my house long before humans walked this Earth. Oklahoma currently sets roughly 1,200 feet above sea level. A human did not cause that drastic change in sea levels and to blame Americans to a 6 to 12 inch rise of seawater on an island seems grossly unfair and short sighted. What's a child to take away from this lesson? As his home is flooded and he is forced to move up hill as his mother cries while their house is torn down, that child will be left with one single thought as to who caused this. All the while it could simply be that the land mass is settling into the sea and nothing to do with a damn American. As all seas do, land and continents rise and fall, drift and move. "We will talk about how America has affected Ogea today." OUCH, sounds like you just squarely placed blame on Americans with that statement. I know for a fact that you and your family are world traveled and more so than I. I've been around the world 19 times and I also know for a fact that countries such as China, India, and many of the coastal countries on the continent of Africa are polluting the oceans and air at an alarming rate. China alone produced double the CO2 that the U.S. does and yet America get thrown under the bus despite the U.S. having it's largest decline, not rise, in CO2 in 2019. This was the largest decline by ANY country during that time frame. I know some or possibly many will not care for me putting this out there and that is perfectly fine as we all have opinions, but if your going to have an opinion on sea levels don't restrict your knowledge to just the time frame that you have breathed air. This planet ebbs and flows on a time frame that far exceeds a humans lifespan or even recorded history.

Hi Matthew. Yes, the planet ebbs and flows, and right now (regardless of what caused it) CO2 is increasing and our global temperatures are rising and as a result our sea levels are rising. I love you guys, you're one of my favorite sailing channels, but I'm disappointed to see you trying to spread the insanity of the anti-industrial global warming cult to these beautiful people who deserve better. Twenty five thousand years ago the oceans were 500 feet below what they are today. North America was covered in an ice sheet up to a mile thick and people from Asia were able to walk over and populate the Americas across the Aleutian Islands land bridge. The sun constantly cycles and during the warming period which ended the last ice age the ice sheets melted raising the sea level. This has nothing to do with CO2 levels from industry or driving SUV's or catastrophic volcanoes, but the cyclical nature of the sun which has been ongoing for billions of years. Recall how much warmer the planet was during the age of the dinosaurs. The seas have risen a centimeter past century and will unlikely rise further no matter how much the earth warms because the bulk of the polar ice caps are floating in the seas so when a glass of ice water filled to the brim melts it doesn't overflow the glass. The earth's crust is constantly in motion floating on a liquid magma core so if these Islands are in fact sinking the likely culprit is plate tectonics. Otherwise, excellent job in the quality and beauty of your videos and for the fantastic parents you both are.

It’s a Scientific fact that Carbon Dioxide levels are rising and our earth’s temperature is increasing. Man may not have caused it but we are certainly not helping the situation by adding more.
It is also a Scientific fact that the “Global sea level has been rising over the past century, and the rate has increased in recent decades. In 2014, global sea level was 2.6 inches above the 1993 average-the highest annual average in the satellite record (1993-present). Sea level continues to rise at a rate of about one-eighth of an inch per year.” -NOAA
Fiji’s landmass is actually rising, but erosion is probably to blame for the land disappearing on this island.
Politics aside, humans are not helping make things better, and the future generations of this village should realize the problem of their village being inundated with water will only get worse.

This area is in a geologic subduction zone, in other words it’s sinking due to tectonic plates not global warming! This is well documented in geology since the 1990 there in Fiji. Venice Italy is sinking similarly for the same reason. The seas have risen about 7 inches worldwide in the last 100 years (global warming) but geology makes large changes both up and down. Naples Italy is rising several inches a year causing the sea level to go down. Let’s not promote false narratives. Love your Chanel!

@@TheSailingFamily A recent ( June 2009 ) scientific paper by Cliff Ollier of the School of Earth and Environment, The University of Western Australia, states as follows : Abstract: Graphs of sea level for twelve locations in the southwest Pacific show stable sea level for about ten years over the region. The data are compared with results from elsewhere, all of which suggest that any rise of global sea level is negligible. The Darwin theory of coral formation, and subsidence ideas for guyots would suggest that we should see more land subsidence, and apparent sea level rise, than is actually occurring. Sea level studies have not been carried out for very long, but they can indicate major tectonic components such as isostatic rebound in Scandinavia. Attempts to manipulate the data by modelling to show alarming rates of sea level rise (associated with alleged global warming) are not supported by primary regional or global data. Even those places frequently said to be in grave danger of drowning, such as the Maldives.
As data is cherry picked to demonstrate global warming, so it is cherry picked to show sea level rise.

Hey, guys...Seth, I thoroughly enjoy your videos...usually...but unfortunately the underlying 'theme' of "Global Warming" in this one belies common sense. For a start, if one were to accept the fundamental principle that 'water finds its own level', notwithstanding that global sea levels are subject to surges--likely as a result of the effects of storm activity and the moon--and if the premise that global warming was causing an increase in sea levels was true, then there would be a trend of evidence that average sea levels existed in most of the rest of the globe. As an example, you were in Sydney Harbour last year and probably motored past Fort Denison just east of the Harbour Bridge and which has been recording seal levels continuously since the early 1800s. Check out the Sydney Bureau of Meteorology for the daily records. I understand that they use a 30-year average as some sort of benchmark and an analysis of those will reveal that the average high water mark was higher than it is today, or last year for that matter, some 70-80 years ago.
I 'sat on the fence, re global warming for the best part of 20 years, drawn one way by the until touring around Tasmania with my son--me a 67-yo retiree and him a then recent graduate agronomist--on a couple of adventure motorbikes where we had occasions to have many of those deep and meaningful conversations as we sat around a campfire. I discovered that he was a 'bought and paid for' Climate Change advocate--a misnomer as the climate if forever changing, and analysis of ice cores reveals and confirms that the planet is cooling as it heads towards another ice age millions of years hence--and I was left with no position to take one way or another due to the fact that I couldn't cite any evidence. With time on my hands--some might argue too much time--I determined to discover the existence of any evidence for myself so that I could have a reasoned opinion. I discovered from my exhaustive research that the whole Global Warming myth was predicated on a model used by the champion of Global Warming, Michael Mann of the IPCC, who 'sold' the idea based upon his "hockey stick" prediction, and 25 years on has since been disproven; it was one of many failed models. To date I have not discovered any peer-reviewed evidence which supports this myth, even challenging my own son who has not been able to provide any, instead blindly adopting the opinions of his lecturers who themselves, I assume, have bought into the myth.
In order to test my conclusions based upon scientific studies, or the dearth thereof in the case of the global warming phenomenon, and having had a career in merchant banking I cross referenced them with other evidentiary indicators, such as price variations in waterfront properties and property insurance premiums. I used those two benchmarks because that's where the 'smart money' is located in that the jewry, who of all ethnic/religious persuasion, have the 'longest view'. Conclusion: No evidence of adjustment of risk!
Seth, if you have a genuine interest in taking a position on the matter based upon science I would be only too happy to pass on my references--there's a lot--and in the meantime, I recommend that you search--not using Google--the Medieval Warming Period, the Maunder Minimum, and Professor Valentina Zharkova, Solar Scientist at Northumbria University regarding her prediction of a Super Grand Solar Minimum which has already begun in 2020, i.e. there is presently virtually no sun spot activity at this time--one can only wonder at the early impact of this relative to climatic variations which have occurred globally but particularly in the US in relation to food production--and she further predicts that 2030 with be the worst in terms of, should I say it, "Climate Change". (Note that Wikipedia can be factually unreliable on matters of 'political' contention but the overview is still relevant. Nor will the mainstream media offer you any definitive information.)
In summation, I have no interest in brow-beating anyone regarding these otherwise contentious matters; I simply say don't take my word for it. Rather, check out the scientific evidence for yourself. From a geo-political perspective, whether it be Climate Change, Global Warming, the Green New Deal, Covid, Grand Solar Minimum or population reduction/catastrophies, global food production--think Live Aid concert in 1984/5--or alternative sources of replacement or renewable energy, the magic date appears to be 2030, and it is my personal opinion that they are all connected, and propagated by the same people in power, albeit with the wool pulled firmly down over the general population's eyes.
On a lighter note, I have been saying for the best part of 20 years that "Fiji looks attractive", and for the last few years that quip has taken an altogether more profound meaning.
I hope that I hear from you. Cheers
PS. Regarding that village sinking, I am inclined to think that you got the title of this video correct; those outlying islands are most likely sinking rather than sea levels rising. If I recall correctly this is also happening in parts of the Florida coast by all reports. I suspect the key to these events lies with a rise in global volcanic activity and subsequent shifting of tectonic plates. Also, revisit the video and look at the age of the housing--you can tell by the style and materials used, and the stumping supporting the buildings, the steps for access & egress. There is something about the conclusions relating to their story which is disquieting.

    • @TheSailingFamily

Hi Jack. Thanks for the long comment! Unfortunately we have seen too much proof with our own eyes not to believe in the Science of global warming. I’ve climbed Kilimanjaro and seen the glacier melting away myself. The same with Fox Glacier in New Zealand. That water is what is melting and raising sea levels. We see that happening in Cape Cod too. And this village is getting worse and worse. Same in the Bahamas. So while I can accept that we are not 100% sure what is causing the global warming, it is not a debate that it is happening. And this village will need to deal with its affect. Hope that adds clarity to our message.

Absolutely, as the Fijians are wonderful people to boot. We holidayed there 25 years ago when our kids were 4 & 5 yo members of the Little Chiefs Club, and of all the overseas holidays that we've had that one stands head and shoulders above the rest largely due to our experiences associating with the local people whilst enjoying their country...and then a few years later when I returned to full contact rugby playing Golden Oldies alongside them here in Oz.
Unfortunately for this village, and from a cost/benefit perspective, they will likely get relocated if the Solar Minimum doesn't arrive in full force as predicted, and volcanic activity abates and which is responsible for the bulk of global CO2 emissions.

First off, GREAT video series on Fiji. Now added to our bucket list of places to sail for sure!! Explaining and giving examples of climate change and its effects is difficult, especially on the macro scale. It is worth stating that there is the possibility and even probability that some, if not a major part, is not anthropological. That helps with spreading the fact that climate change is real and getting less detractors and skepticism . As a follower wisely posted below, continents have sank, risen, shifted apart and together for millennia. So in a "cause and effect" scenario, it is hard to say if climate change is whole in the effect of rising seas. It is also difficult to ascertain if anthropological causes are the root cause of climate change or merely a component of natural cycles. As evidence, during the same time period, it seems like Mars surface temperatures have risen comparatively. What can be stated, with a degree of certitude, global temps are rising historically, the forecast for global temps are also on an upward trend (to a degree that is very debatable) and those rises in temps will cause a negative impact on our planet to some degree. What can also be stated is, that the use of fossil fuels as a sole source of energy is not only adding to the problem, is not the most efficient means of energy available to us. Setting a lofty goal of complete separation from fossil fuels in 20 years is not well received. It's like getting your kids to clean their room and saying "In 4 hours, this room has to be totally clean" but saying "In one hour, have all your Lego's picked up and put away" and so forth and so on. In the end, we have crossed the Rubicon and there will be some villages and coast lines that will have to be abandoned to rising seas. Financially and the improvement of the quality of life in the developing world will not be sacrificed/halted for these few examples of lost lands to the seas. And as "what is done is done", innovation in carbon capture and sequestration is a must so the global energy demands can still be met via existing fossil fuel generation and transitioned to cleaner more sustainable sources in the near and long term future. Fossil fuels have fuled the greatest improvement of life on earth since their widespread and industrial use. No other innovation is the root cause of human life flourishing as it has over the past 2 centuries. It will continue to improve life and eliminate poverty for the next. How we deal with its hidden cost and transitioning away from it is an opportunity that has few limits. There is an answer in the middle ground that few in this binary/polarized society we live in willingly step foot in or even acknowledge exists.

Your family is amazing. Your sailing friends are just as amazing. I watch all these you tube videos to see where I want to go. You just convinced me that one day I will sail to Fuji and visit the islands you all have plus seek out my own path.
    Thank you for sharing.

From a college professor, nice job in the classroom guys! We often assume people are aware of these critical environmental and life-changing issues, but clearly, this is not the case. I wonder what the future holds for this village?
