They're also human beings. I was in London with my goddaughter, we were trying to find a pub somewhere around the Palace to meet up with mates and were incredibly lost. The Queen's Guards don't just man the front gates, they're all around the property. My goddaughter was close to tears, we couldn't find anyone else to ask, not another soul around, so I went up to the guard and said, "I know you're not supposed to move or anything, but we're looking for XYZ street and completely turned around. Could you like maybe just flick your eyes in the right direction? Please?" He stood completely rigid for a few seconds, then smiled, and - like any normal human being - said "go down that way for two streets, turn left, and it'll be just past ABC shop on the right." Went back to being a statue while my goddaughter gawped in astonishment. "Thank you so much, thank you!" And off we went. My goddaughter couldn't stop telling that story for weeks.
The only indication I've seen that they're human beings was that time the Royal family was doing some big event on live TV in the summer, and one of the guards overheated and fainted (dropping his Bayonet rifle and losing his fuzzy helmet-hat.) For all I knew, they were robots; I half-expected them to have windup keys hidden under their hats, like the tin soldiers you'd see in old tv shows.
I'll bet HE told that story many times. "Just flick your eyes" (to help us without breaking protocol) is one I'm sure no others guards had ever heard including himself. That is so cute and funny! 😊😅
A lot of this is fairly misleading or just perpetuating myths, military prison is a potential punishment for any soldier in the Army, but it's reserved for only the worst offences. Making a guard laugh would at most be a fine from their pay, although from what I've heard, these days that's probably unlikely too, probably depends more on who notices if they do.

@Mike Bell you know that you're mindset is literally so fuck*ng immature. MY FRIEND LITERALLY LOST A PERSON CLOSE TO HER BECAUSE OF COVID AND YOU'RE SAYING THAT IT'S FAKE?. Dude you better get a covid test, I think your brain is infected.
The old notion of “would you like that if someone did it to you?” applies here I think. As an American I would not appreciate tourists disrespecting my country and our traditions, therefore I would not dare to do the same when visiting another nation.
I don't respect their instructions. I don't care for trying to make men act like machines. They could do their guard duty just as well (or better) by being able to be like people instead of statues.
I do wish those that visit us here in the U.K. and particularly london’s royal palaces learn that these guards are on duty! They are not there for tourist amusement,so show respect and appreciate that you’re able to get close but at the same time keep your distance.
Well, if they're there to serve and protect (the royals and their property), then they shouldn't be forcing them to dress up like ridiculously dressed up poofters who look more like transgender drag queens in clowns costumes than actual living soldiers, who are able and willing to risk their lives in battle at any time.
Maybe some tourists think they are there just for show, for their benefit to take photos , these men are serving soilders and deserve respect at all times x
I was a firefighter/EMT..I Once stood guard at the funeral of our longtime chief. Granted it was only a few hours for 2 services, but it was not easy. At the end of the night, I overheard a child about the age of 7 or 8 asking his mom why I was standing so still, and why I wouldn’t smile back at him…I tried really hard to not break, but after about 10 minutes of the child’s innocent questions and faces he made trying to get me to smile,I smiled back. I didn’t get scolded or shot…it was actually quite a memorable experience. 😊
I just watched a video of a father telling his autistic son not to get too close or touch a Royal Guard as they were trying to take a picture with him. The guard took one step towards the father and son to get in the picture. Much respect to the guard and I hope he doesn't get into trouble for moving.
I have always thought that this was a job, and not such a prestigious military appointment. I have a totally new respect for the guards and wish that more people would show them the respect that they’re due.
i wish the queen would show some damn respect. She has them forced into such horrible clothes... how are they supposed to guard anyone if their legit on the line of fainting every so often, not to mention the blinding head gear.
@@levi7492 The soldiers that make up the Guard do so voluntarily. They enroll into one of the five Foot Guard regiments. If they pass their infantry training then they do both tasks. They are fully operational units deployed as the rest of the British army with the added task of performing guard duty.
@@asimoes1974 yah no i get that, i was just being unreasonably salty, but i still stand by it, how are they supposed to guard anyone if their constantly about to faint of heat stroke, they should at least get a summer uniform
@@levi7492 depending on the task like on sentry they have the right to move. (Specific sentry drills, either alone or in unison with their partner) The only real time they are not allowed to move is when they are on parade like the trooping of the colours. Yes it gets hot with the bearskin and tunic but there are tricks to staying up, there are even cases if caught in time where they will sandwich the guard who is not doing well and keep him up. There are tons of little tricks that they learn to stay awake and keep the mind focused as to avoid falling. But sometimes there is nothing one can do. And if you do fall the unwritten rule is you better hit the floor before your rifle does and move a muscle until you are carried off the parade square.
@@asimoes1974 no idea why you mentioned a parade, but the situation im thinking of is a what if situation. Say its mid summer, 30 degrees C with no wind and a few scum bags come and ram the gate in a sort of fashion to over throw the hierarchy and send a msg to the world. After ramming the gate their vehicle stops working so these guys get out and charge for the front doors "where is the front 2 guards and the door guard" you may ask, ah well one tried to shoot the vehicle and landed a few shots however missed his target because he was wearing an animal over his eyes, and the second one passed out while making a dash towards the truck. Which resulted in one of the 2 dieing, (one went unchecked with heat stroke for several hours and the other hit by the truck he barely saw) The front door guards attempted to put up a fight againsed the (lets say 4 men in a bullet proof vest and a t shirt and cargo pants) these 4 men easily take down these trained killers by simply knocking them down with a gun, these guards r tired from just working 1 hour 50 minutes in the scorching sun and are exausted, one attempts to raise his gun to shoot but because of his thick and heavy clothes he didnt raise his arm in time and died. These men make it inside where they are gunned down because im sure interior floor security is wearing normal bullet proof vests and sports suits (normal looking suits for a professional look but are actually rather stretchy and allow for gymnastics).... I fabricated the last part, but im just saying you may not make it to actually kill the queen no matter how hard one may try, but the presidents white house is much more secure and has stronger personel at hand because they arent arrogant enough to force their fighters into the damn flag just rep their country (or patriotic enough? idk i dont think im using the right term but you know what i mean)
They don't get arrested if they smile because people are trying to make them laugh or smile. If they willingly goof off and go derelict on duty that's a separate thing.
Maybe it's judged different for each case... Jail might not be the automatic first punishment but probably receiving fines or some other disciplinary actions.
i served 7 years in the grenadier guards and trooped the color in 2004 it was a amazing experience people never realize that we trained for war with the paras and the Gurkhas the elite
The gun is not loaded. It is used to intimidate and to add to the appearance and etc. They are not loaded thus the Queen’s Guard hardly uses them. The tourists probably realise this so they go and do it to be disrespectful and other stuff.
@@chainedaurora7963 they have bladed gun but yes, their rifle is pointless. Personally I don’t admire about how ELITE they are, if what they do is staying like a rod for hours long and don’t move. The truth is simple: to be perfect in some business you have to exercise your skills constantly. Take for instance SAS and GIGN they mess up in war conflicts and fight the terrorists in harsh situations. They do intense training every day. They don’t waste precious time to stay like a colorful clowns in front of stupid mob.
It’s NOT all Americans. In fact there are probably fewer incidents with Americans than countries like India, Philippines etc that have no concept of this type of uncompromising discipline.
I appreciate this information about the Royal Guards. I have never understood why anyone would show disrespect toward these dedicated and wonderful soldiers. I am an American who respects the history and traditions of England especially since both sides of my family came to America centuries ago from England.
I once saw a video of some American tourist who tried to touch a Royal Guard's hat. It didn't end well. In one movement, the guard moved his foot behind the offender's, gave him a shove, and as the guy hit the ground, he wound up with a rifle in his face and the bayonet about an inch away from his nose with the guard booming "STAND DOWN!" Talk about scary-good. Those guys are weapons.
London is HOT & humid during late spring, summer & early fall. London never gets too cold & is also reasonably dry with not that much rain by global standards & is furthermore occasionally drought prone.
I'm a US Navy veteran and have empathy for the Royal Guard. I ve had to stand motionless in certain ceremonies. It's not fun. While we wouldn't likely go to prison for slightly moving, we were expected to be as still as possible. Why do people think that screwing with a guard of any military organization is a good idea? That is highly disrespectful and a bit loony. I've been an armed guard at a post. Luckily for me I was free to move about. I would snap to attention when I checked ID'S at the gate and render the proper salute when required. I'm lucky that the general public had enough since to mess with me. I had a loaded pistol and a ratio for backup.
Same here. Honestly never gave these men the respect they deserved until I found out how hard it is just maintaining military bearing. If you had watch Partners you could maybe switch off and on and sleep or go use the head but I was never in the public eye like this, this would be hell to stand this post. Much respect.
Reason for the disrespect is easy - For most people today, playing war video games is the closest they ever get to the military. The Military and war are just games to them. US Army here.
Messing with anyone who is doing there job is rude, and asking for trouble. I think the judicial punishment should always be having to do the other person's job for a day, and do it well, or do it all over again, whatever the job may be.
The World has changed and it feels with every Gerneration a piece of general respect is gone...back in die 80/90 we would never gone that close to one of this these guards, even pictures were taken in a Distance....this behavior is disgusting !

i think it's so disrespectful that tourists try to mock them when they are hard working soldiers with extensive training, and all they are trying to do it their job. Plus, tourists don't know that if you threaten the guard you are threatening the monarch
Tourists show their ignorance and lack of education when they act so immature. I wish they were escorted right off the property when they make such a nuisance of themselves. They’re not funny, they just show a lack of breeding and social skills. Not a clue how to act when they’re out in public.
These soldiers performing the royal guard, over the past few years also served multiple tours of Afghanistan, Iraq, Northern Ireland amongst others. They've lost friends and fought to serve their country, So your average man on the street isn't conscripted. This is just part of their duties. Show some respect
I spent two years in Aden in the early sixties and we had the Coldstream Guards and other Guards units serving with us. It was a bit hairy at the time and we used to escort them on their patrols in Habilayn Dhala and the Radfan. I was in the Royal Corps of Transport and were concerned with troop movements and forward supplies of food and ammunition etc.
Most tourists are highly respectful and understandably just want a photo of themselves with the Guards. There's always going to be those few who go too far.
And does he call his hat a ‘bearskin’? I grew up calling it a ‘buzby’. Not sure if I spelt that right! I’m just wondering if ‘bearskin’ is a name used on the other side of the Atlantic, given the rather un-British accent of the narrator?
i have 0 respect for these bafoons who parade around in wigs pretending they have any power when they cant even stand up against clearly ceremonial rules that discriminate against people for being human
My grandfather and father were Coldstream Guards at Buckingham Palace which is a part of the British Army. My dad did not talk a lot about his time in the guards but I do remember him saying that they had to polish the soles of their boots. The height requirement was 6’2” or taller so I was surprised to learn the height requirement has been reduced. This was an interesting article but I am not sure all of the info is correct.
Sorry to destroy your memory, but they didn't polish the soles of their boots. What he meant was EVERYTHING had to be polished! What's more, you don't wear boots when on guard. You wear shoes.
My father was also a Coldstream Guard and was on duty at Buckingham Palace when Elizabeth and Margaret were girls. He was also on guard at The Tower of London and The Bank of England. He served in Palestine and on his way home had to fight in North Africa, including Tobruk and El Alamein. He used to drive a Bren Gun Carrier and drove senior officers in a staff car. He was shot twice. Shaved with petrol to save water and made tea with the water from radiators of damaged vehicles. He told me that wooden and cardboard replicas of tanks and vehicles were placed so that the enemy could see how well equipped the British were. But this ploy was seen through by them as they actually flew over and dropped wooden bombs on them. I wish I could remember everything he told me about it all, I know there was a lot he never let on. I am so proud of him and miss him every day. I have his medals, and a booklet he carried, in his breast pocket, along with other papers and his Guardsman's tie (Which due to never having been a Guard myself, I am forbidden to wear on any occasion.) Rest in Peace Dad. 11.7.19 - 26.8.95.
@@tonycritcher3419 I read with great interest your post. My father was also a Coldstream Guard when the princesses were little girls. He was born in 1918 so they were very close age wise, in their experiences. My father went on to be a commando in the Royal Navy during WWII. In 1954 he moved our family to Canada but the guards were always a very important part of his life. Unfortunately he passed away from multiple myeloma at the age of 45. I believe he was exposed to radiation during a WWII raid in Norway leading to an early death.
@@quesnelgirl My goodness, our fathers may well have known each other and been on duty together. So sorry to see that your father died so young after being exposed to the radiation in his line of duty. War and conflicts are awful things. And so much is lost and often so little is gained. My father always felt guilty about being able to come home having lost so many mates at such young ages too. As for polishing boots, they used to use a hot spoon to smooth the leather to get a better shine. His father was also in the services and told dad that he had to polish the instep underneath his shoes, which I still do, on the occasions where I wear black shoes. As Grandad used to say, 'you never know who is walking behind you and can see the bottom of your shoes!' Thank you for replying, yours was the first post I read and replied to today.
My husband was in the Guards many years ago and recounted the story of the tourist standing next to one of those guarding the Palace. He didn`t move as the guard went to move off and had a large boot smash down on his sandalled foot!!
Just to point out, most of the information in this video is flat out made up, if not wrong. There is no jail sentence for making a guard smile or talk. There is no height requirement for signing up for it - any soldier can do so, whether they get in or not is up to the quality of the application. British soldiers are, compartive to other armies, well trained but not only the elite and most decorated war heroes perform duty as guard. They are not necessarily the most elite well trained soldiers. It's not like they're all Marines, Paras and SAS. Any soldier that has served some tours of duty can do it. I mean he repeats throughout the video "most elite and decorated" it's not the case. They don't have to be from one of 7 specific regiments of the army, also I don't know what he means with "exclusive" regiments like they're some sort of club? Weird description. They aren't picked, they volunteer for it, he got that wrong too. Their ceremonial uniforms are not worn in combat, only at their guard posts and patrols. There is no "English" army, it's British. There's a lot of talk about "Sacred Oaths" and "Ancient orders" hahahahaha they aren't the Knights Templar they're soldiers im uniform. Many of the clips aren't showing real guards, but what look like actors. And Guards from other countries. But other than that, yeah accurate video!
Just an honour guard. If had to guess being assigned or requesting it these days probably more akin to semi retirement than anything. Sure know use those rifles and bayonets but…I’d imagine the “best of best” wouldn’t be yanked off active duty rosters.
@@BRBMrSoul It’s not a sort of retirement or even a gateway to it. It’s something active duty soldiers do between tours. Most of them will be relatively early into their career and be right back out in combat after this posting.
Congratulations on getting half of that summary / analysis correct = The SWELTERING HEAT, especially during the summer months, with the oppressive, sweltering humidity alongside. However, your WINTER analysis is way out, so to spare you some embarrassment. London rarely and neither gets particularly cold in winter plus does NOT get much rain, full stop. Relative to New York, for example, London gets well under half of New York, USA's rainfall (22 inches : London vs 50 inches : New York). London is fairly drought prone for a good portion of the year also. London is also warmer than New York for 9 months of the year as well, for example.
It is indeed unfortunate that many individuals are lacking in just plain "common sense" to not even realize that outside of actual "COMBAT," that "GUARD DUTY" FOR ANYONE SO ASSIGNED IS THE MOST SERIOUS ENDEAVOR AND INTERFERING WITH SUCH CAN AND MOST LIKELY WILL BE THE CAUSE OF YOUR SUFFERING DIRE CONSEQUENCES.
The Guards and Household Cavalry are no "toy soldiers". They are members of regular regiments doing a "ceremonial turn". My father was in the cavalry, the fellas on horseback with armour and swords, but when not doing a turn at royal residences he was sat in a tank wearing khaki.
I'm shocked that so many don't realise that they are serving elite soldiers. When not on duty in London these regiments have served in the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan and all over the world. Those horse guards you see with the swords and the plumed helmets are our elite tank regiments who have served all over the world in conflicts and peace-keeping roles. They are the best of the best.
there's plenty of AMA on reddit about these guys. You don't go to prison or get fired for laughing or smiling. one guy said you can get fined for it, for the most part, nothing happens. they do what they do because 1 they get a pay raise for the position and 2 it's viewed as an honor.
I’d be curious to know if they’d be allowed to blink once for yes, twice for no. Of course it would be interesting to get a photo, but I’d never do it without the person’s permission. The blink response could be useful!
200 years ago, nobody would have dared to show such disrespect. The guards would have used their weapons for their purpose, and a few people would have learned a hard lesson.
The fainting is typically from locking your knees, and slowing bloodflow. In the marines, during uniform inspections, we would stand at attention for hours, and it wasnt uncommon for at least one person to faint
I actually saw it two times in my short period of military service that a member of the army passed out while standing in formation for a long time. First time it was because of the cold, second time it was because of the heat.
The guards MUST be vigilant and no nonesense. Especially after the incident in Canada that had the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier killed in an attack. RIP Cpl. Nathan Frank Cirillo.
That was a bad day to work for Corporal Cirillo. He was a double citizen: he was both a “civilian” and when he wasn’t, he was a member of the under-appreciated “Army Reserve.” I know reservists who work full-time jobs and also work more: a few hours per week, several weekends per year, and between two weeks and several months per year - giving up that much extra of their lives. Some work full-time for years. All are prepared to fight a war for their country. They deserve a load of respect for carrying all that load. When Corporal Cirillo was murdered, and knowing what kind of person did it (ahem), I have lost all faith in integrating some religions of peace which in fact are the opposite for those who take an old book and manuscripts literally. A few bad apples…but always, a few bad apples. These Royal Guards are also deserving serious respect. It’s disgusting that some people harass them instead of just being content seeing them in person as an example of near perfect professionalism that comes with deep sacrifice. That is incomprehensible.
I'm not sure why you think Guardsmen are not allowed to move. They stand still only for about 10 minutes while on duty and are allowed to walk/march short distances to keep the blood circulating. If caught smiling by an officer they can be fined from their wages, but certainly not imprisoned. They may require to pee during duty, as in hot weather they are encouraged to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and fainting.
“Fainting at attention” happens in every Army in the world... and even elementary school chorus performances. Lock your knees and stand perfectly still and you will be unconscious before you hit the ground too.
Back when I was in the army, we had various ceremonies in Germany, where we had to be somewhat similar. There was times we would stand at attention for an hour or more. It was tough. The discipline these guys have is incredible
It doesn't always require that you lock your knees. I went to a military academy when I was 16, and remember when they were dedicating a memorial one day when the temperature was around 37C(100F). After standing at attention for over an hour in our dress blues listening to some congressman and other VIPs, I started getting tunnel vision. I remember making sure my knees weren't locked, but it didn't matter. I passed out. There were a number of cadets assigned to try and keep us from hitting our heads too hard. Then drag us off to some shade to recover. It's been almost 35 years ago now, but I remember that about 1/3 to 1/2 of us fell out that day.
I have been to the palace a few times when young and never saw this behavior. As an adult, I would intervene and tell these fools to show some respect. The ones who cross barriers should be arrested.
I once knew a former Royal guard. And not only are they not to be tested while they are servicing on duty, they aren't to be mess with even after they retired and have become civilians. Lets just say that I mildly brush the ex SF soldier the wrong way and he over reacted and our short lived friendship was instantly over. Yes all of those guards have experienced combat so they are naturally unhinged and PTSD is the norm for them!
Royal Guards are such underestimated ones... People don't realize how making them laugh would end their carreer.... And also, I think it's kinda cruel making them stand still until they faint. I'm worried that this posture may bring any physical or mental consequences... I know they're highly trained, but still... They deserve a lot more respect than they get. Congratulations, Royal Guards.
their training is just trauma until they stop having feelings. and they are allowed to laugh if a tourist makes them laugh they just cant goof around and make eachother laugh. at this point they are just for decoration and dont even have loaded weapons which allows them to move people easier because they can point them at people without lawsuits.
Many see forex as a get rich scheme but forex is not like that, it's a gradual process with the right tools and application you can make a living from forex trading..
One of the reasons that they faint is because they lock their knees when standing still which makes them lose hearing, and vision just like passing out
During band practice, they always told us to give our knees a slight buckle , but in the royal guards case theyre knees would have to be locked and displined if they didn’t keep this stance and punished .
The US Navy had the same conditions in boot camp. If you fainted in ranks, you were gone. They sent you home, where you could be drafted. You could not smile, laugh, or even fart while at attention. The VietNam years were tough. We were not Seals, but we were expected to act as if we were.
Boot camp in 1975. We were told that we had to request permission before we passed out while at attention. I know how it sounds. Doesn't seem possible but it could happen. And locking your knees was usually the culprit. There was no penalty if you just passed out, though.

@@levi7492 depending on the task like on sentry they have the right to move. (Specific sentry drills, either alone or in unison with their partner)
The only real time they are not allowed to move is when they are on parade like the trooping of the colours.
Which resulted in one of the 2 dieing, (one went unchecked with heat stroke for several hours and the other hit by the truck he barely saw)
The front door guards attempted to put up a fight againsed the (lets say 4 men in a bullet proof vest and a t shirt and cargo pants) these 4 men easily take down these trained killers by simply knocking them down with a gun, these guards r tired from just working 1 hour 50 minutes in the scorching sun and are exausted, one attempts to raise his gun to shoot but because of his thick and heavy clothes he didnt raise his arm in time and died.
These men make it inside where they are gunned down because im sure interior floor security is wearing normal bullet proof vests and sports suits (normal looking suits for a professional look but are actually rather stretchy and allow for gymnastics)....

Hello Anna
I have his medals, and a booklet he carried, in his breast pocket, along with other papers and his Guardsman's tie (Which due to never having been a Guard myself, I am forbidden to wear on any occasion.) The guards MUST be vigilant and no nonesense.

I have been to the palace a few times when young and never saw this behavior. As an adult, I would intervene and tell these fools to show some respect. The ones who cross barriers should be arrested.
Battle hardened soldiers and how they are sharing their experiences standings still wow.
They have clearly not heard about the special forces of India
@@adityyathakur1120 yea I dont think anyone has. They aren't exactly big players.
Such a fascinating military detail. I just don't get people that interfere with their duties. Then again, some people have no character or self pride.

Outstanding young men. Simply excellent soldiers.
I think that I recognized a couple of women as well in the mix. 🙂
All the respect in the world for these soldiers ....... From the US .......
When I got a problem, I will simply talk to the royal guards and here nothing at all.

People will be kicking themselves in a few years if they miss this precious opportunity to trade and invest in binary options this period
@Birjesh Devi You are right, I thought I knew it all when I was practicing with my demo account
But I lost a lot of money when I began my life trading, I had to look for a professional trader to help me with my trade
@@markwilson9150 I have been trading under expect Dylan J Mason platform, he made me $23,000 with an investment plan of $4,000
I didn't think it was possible for me to have MORE respect for them than I already did.
Nothing but respect for these fine professionals.
I wonder like whehn they’re on break like their conversations are like
“So how many tourist did you get today?”
“Oh I got lucky today I only got 30”
If they even get breaks

Yes like wonder like how many likes you can get for your likes
😂😂😂
" Bloody wankers. The lot of them."
I hope this isn’t rude, but as someone who lives in the uk, I love the way he say monarch and Buckingham Palace lol.
Why would that be rude
depends on the tone
My great uncle used to be a soldier, but for Canada, but he did still be a royal guard.
If I go to another country as a traveller I will NEVER tease or make fun of their soldiers. Why would you do that?
because they make a big deal of not being human so to try and make them have a human reaction is funny
One of the reasons that they faint is because they lock their knees when standing still which makes them lose hearing, and vision just like passing out
Actually we don't for that reason
That sounds cool but I don’t remember asking
Same with Indian special forces para sf commandoes, they have to pass a lot of tests. They have to be awake for 36 hrs continuously
0:25 WHY
Agreed.
I would never mess with a guard. Give them respect.
It angers me so much when tourists are disrespectful. I am so proud to be British and so very proud to have these soldiers looking after our Royal Family.
