    As an American who lived in Australia for a few years, I can speak to some of the cultural differences.
    1. If you are going to the pub with friends, plan on buying a round for your entire party. That's how they do it. Everyone takes turns buying a round. Its your shout (your turn) they will say. You might end up buying 10 drinks all at once, but may not have to spend another dime on drinks that night.
    2. It isn't common knowledge, but a lot of aussies are a little distrustful of Americans. They only know what tv and movies portray us as. However, if you can get past that, they are the most loyal friends you will ever have.
    3. While I was there, a beer truck rolled on a Sydney freeway. This event made all 3 national news networks. Don't underestimate the importance of beer.

    How can anybody give a thumbs down to such a great family sharing how they live the life of sailing with kids. They are trolls and jealous. We've watched this family grow on UA-cam and share such great experiences. Seth and Liz keep up the great job and keep sharing your videos. Boy the kids hair grows really fast, phew. Take care. At Elisabeth admire your courage going sailing knowing that you get seasick. I fish in the waters off Cape Town and it can get hairy so I understand the feeling of being queasy as well as out of it🤣🤣😎Given you are in Oz may I suggest acupuncture the Ozzies are into alternative medicine and it may help nothing ventured nothing gained. My family are in NSW but being in Cape Town South Africa it may be sometime before I see them again. But my Mom swears by these alternatives particularly if modern medicine doesn’t work or gets you spayed out. Love your channel keep it real 🖖😎

    Nice to see the family opening up... Great Q&A.. I know that sea sicknes is a pain in the but, at least when one of you have it. I adminre the strength Elisabeth have putting up with it again and again that takes strength and determintaion. I tested my wife just now for 10 days in a Logoon 42. She loved the boat but hated the sea....lol.... I gues a Lagoon 42 is not the best boat to sail along the coast of Norway..... It made a lot of noise in rough sea. If we are lucky we will be able to rent a 4X next month. But i dont think my wife will like the boat because she also got to see a Lagoon 55 when we were in france a month ago. But i have to sell my wife if i am getting a Lagoon 55. She wont read this...lol.

      It's a good story actually. We met at a bar and quickly discovered we lived in the same neighborhood. Then the same street. Then the same cross street. Then the same building. I had moved into the third floor of the building and Elizabeth lived on the sixth. It was very funny to realize we were neighbors, but not to meet in the building. And quite convenient because I did not have to ask for her number. Anyway, that's the short version!

    Hello Seth and Elizabeth,
    Oh man, I wish I had known that you were doing a live stream! As far as Aussies are concerned (I met a ton of them in Europe years ago) they don't just remind me of Americans, they remind me of Californians. But they can drink more beer in one night than I can drink water! Crazy fun people, though. I loved the clinic you (Seth) and Doug did with Brett from Multihull Central, it was absolutely fabulous. You, Seth, and Doug both talked about reefing the main. You have a two-line reefing system and Doug has a single-line system. Some folks (Jimmy Cornell, for one) have talked about the difficulty of reefing a large Outremer while sailing downwind. Doug stated that it's a slow process, but very controlled - so I imagine he reefs real early. How is that maneuver performed on the O-51 sailing dead downwind? Great video by the way, good to hear all this perspective stuff too!

    • @TheSailingFamily
      @TheSailingFamily  3 роки тому +1

      Good question. We don't find it hard. In fact, we find reefing easier than shaking a reef. You just tighten the main sheet, then gradually pull down the leech and the luff as you ease the halyard. It seems easy for us, but shaking a reef we do point up wind as it seems like there is too much load on the halyard when going up. -Seth

    • @rickemmet1104
      @rickemmet1104 3 роки тому

      @@TheSailingFamily Thank you Seth, that's good to know. Hearing Jimmy talking about it taking 30 minutes for three people to put a single reef in an Outremer 5X was a bit worrisome. He had a rotating mast put on his Elcano - an O-45 with modifications. I can see that having a two-line reefing system could get jammed a bit, depending on the wind strength, but it seems like it should be pretty easy to get unstuck. Cheers!

    • @TheSailingFamily
      @TheSailingFamily  3 роки тому +1

      Well, from our perspective, it seemed America mis-managed Covid at first (certainly compared to New Zealand, Fiji and Australia who restricted state travel, instituted mask mandates and required contact tracing app use in public places), but is now ahead of some nations in vaccinations, regaining international travel and getting back to business as usual. In fact, Australia is so far behind on delivering vaccines that it is now dealing with another wave, as is France and a lot of other countries. We were happy to be somewhere else before, but now it's coming to us. That is what we meant... ~Seth

    I am SOOO glad Elizabeth knows how to take over in emergencies. I perceive he has taken a few chances without wearing lifevest ( at night).what if he falls
    overboard and Elizabeth is sleeping? I dont have seen him click into jackline ( in case he has one) often. Most boats take some sails down to be safer at night. So that worries me when he rushes to the next port taking some things and breaking stuff aboard from equipment strain. I mean he is s very good sailor but safety is a bit sloppy it SEEMS..

    • @TheSailingFamily
      @TheSailingFamily  3 роки тому +1

      We're pretty safe, but yes, we could always be safer. We have jacklines and use them when it's rough. And we always reef going into night (especially after our spinnaker scare). Lifejackets are always worn when going forward in the dark, and I always tell Elizabeth (even if she's sleeping) that I'm going forward. Thankfully we can do 99% of our sail handling from the helm. Thanks for watching. ~Seth

      Sorry to offend, but you were the ones that brought it up, albeit in a subtle way. Perhaps thicken your skin.
      Great video, regardless, and thank you for that.
