Hey, major bull whip user here! I have 18 years of practice with a variety of different whips but the bullwhip is my strong suit. I can confirm, preforming a "wrap" and swinging from it is 100% doable. Its a matter of flicking the whip over itself on the wrap you create by doing the "wave" technic as the gentleman below me mentioned. From here, an overlapping interlocking "knot" is created and in this way, yes, swinging from it is VERY possible. Providing you are using a high quality whip made with good material. Kangaroo and Nylon Paracord I have found are materials best for this, especially if you plan on putting heavy work on it, swinging, grabbing, ect. Dont try it with a whip from spirit halloween.
That's sometimes Mythbusters annoyed me. Just because "they" can't do it.....novices at best. Doesn't mean its impossible to do. I doubt he could me the swing with an attached rope.
Lol. I did a similar experiment in my backyard and I didn't have a high quality bullwhip. I purchased a cheap whip from a ranch style home goods store, but it had decent length. I think it's about 10-12 feet. To your point, even my cheap bull whip was capable of creating a strong wrap on the tree branch that I tested in my parent's backyard. It was kind of a lame test because there wasn't much elevation off the ground but the whip could hold my weight and I probably could've even used it to climb. The wrap did take several attempts but it's doable as you say.
Securing the whip for a swing is two movements. First you do what he did and get it wrapped around the beam. Whip users call this a "knot" but it's really not. the only thing holding it in place is friction and momentum. You then need to throw a wave down the whip to cause the middle to cross over the end, pinning it to the beam and preventing it from coming loose. And once you've done that you need to make sure your swing doesn't pull it in a direction that causes it to let the pressure off the end and let it slip. It's definitely not easy, but it's very doable with practice.
Laurence Perkins Yes very true. Is basic rope science! The whip must be secured by the last over part being played over the coil. This stops the whip being able to move. It's actually the Wight of the person swinging, that stops it slipping.
Also an Indy bullwhip man myself. Totally right. It's the pressure on the knott that allows for a swing. I tell people this video is some scientist pretending to know what he's doing... But Adam didn't research whip technique at all
This actually kinda makes sense, if you pay attention to the original film, Indy is very experienced with his whip and swings over the gap flawlessly, but Satipo being inexperienced with the whip, he almost falls to his doom.
In the full episode they did it successfully when they made the tree branch actually have a treebranch-like surface. But in terms of something like the smooth branch in this clip, like someone said in the comments, it requires a little more finesse to get the whip to 'knot' securely
That's a good way to completely ruin a good whip. The leather stretches beyond the leather intigrity. The whip in movie was actually a leather wrapped cable. The idea is way too cool.
I expect if you're an adventuring archaeologist you can write replacements off as a business expense on your taxes though and just go ahead and abuse them if doing so gets you out of a life-threatening scenario.
It is possible to wrap a whip around tight enough to support someone leaning away from it I tried it on a fence post once obviously there is a difference I just mean it's possible to wrap it in a knot that with minimal wiggling of the handle comes undone
1) I don't think this works with just any whip. 2) You need know how to handle the whip, you need practice (which Indi has in abundance). So this test doesn't prove anything, except for lazy preparation.
But Adam has both a specialized whip made specifically for this test designed to carry his weight, and was trained by the same man who trained Harrison Ford for Crystal Skull.
The first one to actually teach him how to use the bull whip was lash la rue...the king of the bull whip. Though you hear a lot of others take credit later on. No one was better with a bull whip than lash (Alfred). I met him twice when I was a little girl when he came to visit my grandpa. I never realized how loud a whip was until then.
INDY had pants that fit. That's the real problem here. Plus, if you wanna swing on a bullwhip, you need to cross hatch the whip over itself so it doesn't slip off.
if it was done all in one motion it would have a better chance of holding you thru the swing wether theres a knot or not your momentum and the slight bit of tension in the whip will hold you long enough to clear that
I made a bullwhip using paracord and chain (and some steel rods and a bunch of tape), and it is strong enough to hold my weight. I wrap it around a tree securely and I can swing from it without a problem
I watched Adam Winrich's tutorial video on how to make a 6 foot whip. After making the 6 foot whip I then made a 17 foot whip using the same principles but I increased everything in magnitude.
Yep! the whip that Stan Winston studio made for Harrison Ford to use in those shots was cored with steel, cable. I actually tested the flexibility of a bare-bones steel cable core, and it didn't crack loud enough. Now, 550 paracord on the other hand...
If it's a continuous motion like if you run, jump, whip and the force of you falling tightens at the point of the swing it should stay tight enough for you to get across. You whipped it, then waited allowing slack in the rope to loosen. If it's one continuous motion done by someone athletic and not some nerd it should be doable. The trick is loosening the whip to get it back once you've made it across.
12 feet is BS, he never got a running start like that, the jump was like 5 feet this show was good at first but turned to BS very fast. NOTHING was worth mentioning about them after a while.

They seem to think because they have a warehouse full of junk, engineering degrees and a workshop that makes them right
Are there any videos of this on UA-cam? The best I can find is AdamCWM, and I think he explains it it also just seems like a standard hitch.

He doesn't have much arm strength to make the swing.
In the full episode they did it successfully when they made the tree branch actually have a treebranch-like surface. But in terms of something like the smooth branch in this clip, like someone said in the comments, it requires a little more finesse to get the whip to 'knot' securely
you can do it. you just messed up that time...

Adam Savage is what I wanna be when I grow up.
lol
Adam is what you wanna be instead of growing up! ;-)

I think the episode showed him making the whip specifically for the swing.

I’d say just use up one whip until it wears out, and get another one like it, eh?
Had a really good whip as a kid. 8 foot with kangaroo hide. I used to swing from trees with it constantly and it still cracks loud as ever.
@@Luke101 To be fair, as a kid you weigh at most half as much as an adult (depending on your age).

I think you might be taking a fantasy character too seriously...
@@valeoncat13 I think the OP means the character has had much practice using a whip that way. You'd have to be a master at the whip like Indy.

adam winrich made a whip he can swing from so
They did it in the full ep
Yeah he did
You see, Batman had the right idea using a grappling gun instead.

It would have worked had he went ahead and jumped, instead of waiting around.
I know one of the owners of one of the whips from the movie. The whip used for the swinging scene had thick wire in the core....
INDY had pants that fit. That's the real problem here. Plus, if you wanna swing on a bullwhip, you need to cross hatch the whip over itself so it doesn't slip off.

Length of the whip? David Morgan gave them different length whips for the movie.
My question too

U can easily do it, but u kept yanking at it, that loosened it up a bit.

I've actually done this before. It took a few tries but I actually swung off of a whip. It was a lot of fun but I don't recommend it.
amazing
just watched smarter's video on this same thing.
It could be possible to make a custom whip that can do this...
When you tug on the whip it loosens it

Moving and whipping. (Trevor Belfort did it) lol
It IS possible, your whip wasn't secured as well as it could be.

how about, putting your hand, that your whipping the log with.In the lanyard, that way. It wont fall out
A guy named Adam winrich did this already and it's possible
so he just wasn't strong enough to hold on to the rope?
The knot came undone so he fell
dr octopus could have cleared it easy
huh what am i on about ?
