  • Whips can get expensive fast, so I'm here to show you some low dollar options that I found on Amazon. Are these whips any good? How much should you spend on your first whip? These are questions I help answer in this video!
TLDR: Skip Amazon and find an entry level whip maker on Etsy or Ebay. Reach out to them and get something from them, they'll love your business and you will get a higher quality product then the mass produced options you can find on Amazon!

The 'Indy' whip reminds me of those £2 whips you get from joke shops. Someone bought me one when I was at university. Totally useless except for one thing - they make great cat toys.
My cat loved chasing the popper and chewing on the cheap leather. There was enough spring in it to make it wriggle across the floor, or I could dangle it from the stairs and get him to jump up to catch it. After he'd shredded the whip down to the core (which was made from something like straw) I went out to the joke shop and bought him another one. Much better value than a lot of the cat toys on the market!

Thanks for the informative and entertaining video. For years Ive seen that Indiana Jones costume whip, wondering If it would work. Ive gotten a dogleash with some shoelace tied into it to crack, so I wondered that an actually whip shaped... whip wouldnt be so bad. Being a small town boy for all my life, I have missed out on all of Indiana Jones merch, so I was amazed to actually find the whip in a costume store when I was visiting the capital. I held from buying it, as It came with a crappy hat, that was too small, and I already had myself a brown fedora (Still do!). Finally someone tested It out for me, so that itch has been scratched.

I have an old handmade bullwhip with true wooden handle which was braided by hand.
It’s about eight to ten feet long and I’ve had it since I was a young man.
I have always treated it with leather oil and after a small amount of bees wax to seal in the oil and to water proof it.
It has a tongue at the end and does not taper to a thin end, it was made for cows and with a simple side handed lash it snaps very easy.
I got it for fifty dollars from a friend who I asked to look for one for me and who found one and got it for a low price then sold it to me with a finders fee which was about twenty five dollars or half the price but I was pricing them and they started at a hundred dollars for a used one and that was just a estimate.
Bull whips where hard to find in my day, it was not as easy as today and just going online and searching one up.
The whips you buy today and for show and if you actually intend on using them extensively you will find they fray and brake easy.
The one I have is a handmade authentic whip made by a whip maker years ago for farm use and cattle wrangling.
P.S I use to practice by putting cloths pegs on a line and whipping them off one by one.

Great info on the whips, thanks. Can you quantify the “weight” characteristic I hear so much that makes the difference in a good whip. I had/have an old 10 footer, leather that I bought back in 1975. The fall finally broke off it, and the whip is a somewhat nodally, but I was always able to crack it with a side are through.
Anyway, just bought a cheap $50 nylon replacement and it is much lighter and has a stubborn curl that I’m not sure how to use. Any instructions on how to use a brand new stiff whip?
    Thanks again for your video.

You'd be surprised at how cheap of a whip can crack. The first whip I bought was a $25 Texas gas station swivel handle. Made in Mexico, 10 feet, looked worse than even the cheapest one you have. It was so inflexible that I could hardly do a cattleman's crack, but after just 30 minutes of constant practice I had it cracking over my shoulder hard enough to hurt my ears.
Of course I had to do a weird "Start vertical and crack horizontal" whip to get it to do that and by the end of those 30 minutes I had worn the whip so bad that the center of the thong was fraying, and I was using as much force as a haymaker. But I could do it!

That was fun! I was looking at whips online as well and you popped up. I usually just get the prca 10' leather. I've had 3. It's an ok all purpose for 65$ I think. Try one. I had a 12' Paracord one that bend Stella and put dents in dumpsters. I had a video on you tube called bullwhip in love but I can't find it. The recoil after smacking a dumpster with that heavy 12 was crazy.

I needed a whip for a costume (not Indiana Jones), but still wanted it to work (I do not want to embarass myself by unfolding something rather crappy). From my former equestrian days, I never liked the long lungeing whips I had to use for groundwork. Consequently, I went with a short 1.20 m model. It is enough to do the job, but gets the look accross. Also, having not done this for over 10 years, I feel better with this. Will still do quite some practice, but it works very nicely. Got it on a Black Friday sale from etsy...nice leather, despite being a beginner whip, it is real leather and is nicely weighted. Any boy, you can make this thing crack. Thing I noticed is I have to practice my wrist technique. If done correctly, cracking is easy.

I purchase whips from ebay since in the UK i cannot find any reliable and cheap places I must say over the year's the ones I've bought are rather good however I have found struggle with some, those being some of them turn out to be ridiculously stiff, half of the time these are from the whips which I have had some of the gooder results with too. I have two questions, one being how do I soften up my bullwhips, under the assumption when they're soft they're better to crack and overall better in general. And where can someone like me from the UK purchase reliable whips which won't break or come undone. And if possible where could I get some whip care/treatmeant resources to keep my whips in tip top shape? (Sorry had to add this, but whats the best material for practical whips?)

I actually ordered one of those "$50 Amazon" whips and when it was about 75% of its way to me, it suddenly became "undeliverable" and was sent back. In the meantime, I saw this video and took your advice about looking on Etsy. (What a dangerous rabbit-hole...)
It can be a little intimidating trying to find the artisans as the first few pages seem to be dominated by "star sellers' who are really just "Amazon-style mass-market vendors", but I continued the search a number of pages in when I noticed a brand new seller: 8-foot kangaroo hide "Indy" whip, decent price, AND a fellow Canadian. (Never hurts to support the home team.)
    So, I rolled the dice....
And, boy, did it ever pay off.
Got my whip today and it is something else. This guy knows his craft.
So, thanks for the Etsy advice. Took a few more bucks but it turned what would have been a mediocre purchase into something far more awesome.

I'd say I'm sad for my first whip but my family is poor, just got my whip two days early for my birthday (14th) and I really liked swinging around with it and I'm just trying to learn as much as I can before the weekend (I want to show my mom how much progress I made when she gets out of the hospital for a medical emergency that's personal)

i had a 10 dollar whip like the cheapy you were using. It was pretty useless and I was blaming it on my lack of skill and training. then, I took it to a whipping seminar given by an experienced whip maker and he told me that it needed a stiffer handle to get it to work at all decently (which was a relief because I was hoping that it wasn't due to my being totally clueless). I made the handle with a piece of 1/2 inch drip irrigaton tubing that i covered with some black scrap leather, running the old handle inside the tubing and securing it at the heal. Subsequently, It served me well for about 10 years of occasional use then about a year ago, the leather was seriously decomposing so i retired it. I bought some fancier but still cheap ones (under 50 bucks each) but they didn't work as well as my modified but now retired, 10 dollar whip. Then, I tried making a paracord whip and compared to all the others (including my retired one), it's awesome. I'm sure I could do an even better job on my 2nd attempt but i'm not that ambitious (this first one seemed like it took forever to make and i was so sick of the videos I had to watch to learn how to do it. When it does come time to replace it, I will be buying one from you. I'm sure yours are great.

Thanks for sharing this story! I dig that idea of using some pvc pipe to make a handle on one of those super cheap whips. If someone reaches out to me with a super small budget I'll for sure recommend this!

I'd like to suggest practicing with different handle sizes. I do believe your assessment is correct & you do know your sht bra but take it from someone who can Crack anything. I can make the shtyindie do anything but only once because it'll blow out or shatter. I believe that if you did this video mid to late summer you'd have better control the guy that showed me how to Crack was a Florida "cow rancher" & he hated being called a cowboy. Really good guy. He trained me on a fla handle like yours. Like 12 to 15 inch handles. But we would break most under the weekend. You are correct about the wip makers also. I can still Crack the wet tip off a towel at 42

im just over 5.5min into this vid and i have the $50 selection in my ebay cart awaiting the splurge. the next idea you coul run is buying the $50 whip and converting it into a snake whip!! thats what i'm planning on doing, as i am amidst plaiting my 1st belly now and i'm uncertain how many i'll end up with, after i learn how alla this stuff goes together lol. i got a $8 gas station whip and disassembled it to learn its secrets (ie flaws) abnd began my whipmaking journey thus. i won't produce them for sale, but i enjoy the occasional craft and who doesn't pretend to be Indy sometimes?

Man I just watched this video and I wish I found it a couple of months ago so I could've made a better decision with my money. Because I bought a paracord nylon bullwhip off Amazon a couple months ago and it's so bad. It barely has any taper on it and the fall hitch is so fat, it's an 8 strand hitch that's about the size of my thumb and it just feels atrocious to try and crack it
