It was explained in the book that Indy used the periscope (I think he tied his whip to it!). But the film kind of left it open to questions... The only way people might infer he'd hung onto the periscope was the scene showing the Nazis inside the sub looking through the periscope as they traveled underwater. Obviously, the top of the periscope had to be above water for the duration of their trip. 😺💕🐾

The famous "Indy's Pistol vs the Big Sword" final chosen scene was Harrison Ford's idea. He didn't feel good and wanted to cut it short. Great choice! The Indy lashed to the periscope scene explained how he was able to stow away on the Nazi U-Boat.

You can hear another reason why they redo their dialogue afterward. Stomping around on the 'cave' floors reveals they are just plywood covered in dirt.
Thank goodness Spielberg has never become squeamish over the scene where Indy shoots the swordsman. Lucas would have CGI'ed in some sort of excuse by now.
"Harrison Ford revealed that the scene was meant to be the ultimate duel between sword and whip but he was suffering from dysentery and found it really difficult to be out of his trailer for more than ten minutes at a time. Ford and Spielberg realized that the complex fight scene would take days to shoot, a timeframe that the ailing star was not feeling up to. Therefore, Ford suggested that his character should simply shoot his enemy, and director Steven Spielberg readily agreed to the idea. "
It would of never made any sense. How can a whip be used against a sword. One strike and the whip is fully extended and the guy with the sword could of just rushed him and stabbed him. Dumb idea. It's actually lucky they all got diahrrea and Ford couldn't do it rather than bad luck which is normally what diahrrea is lol.
Always love these bloopers and outtakes for this Seminal classic film. Harrison Ford will the definitive Indiana Jones much the same way Sean Connery was with James Bond. It's no surprise that they cast Connery as Indy's dad as who else but James Bond could have birthed him. The deleted scene where Indy and Marion escape the cave and there is Tunisian lying by the cave makes sense now.
Very true! It's fitting that Connery played Indy's father given the franchise adopted the Bond formula - if I recall correctly, Spielberg wanted to direct a Bond film when Lucas pitched him the idea for Raiders.
No, it was NOT inspired by James Bond, Spielberg wanted to direct a Bond movie but Lucas said he had something even better he could direct instead - Raiders Of The Lost Ark.
To all y’all interested (and too young to simply know this) the film is called Raiders of the Lost Ark. It was only on DVD rereleases (subsequent to the two sequels) that they added the “Indiana Jones and the…” part, as that was the titling format for those two films. But at the time of the release of the original, nobody would have heard of the character, and it wouldn’t have made any sense. And for some reason it bugs me when I see “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Just bugs me.
Dude, everyone here know the name of the movie. Plus, it's in the title of this video. (also in the movie) "But at the time of the release of the original, nobody would have heard of the character, and it wouldn’t have made any sense." - this is an absolutely logical thing, which does not need to be explained to anyone (who has common sense).
I'm glad Steven got his first choice for Indy which was Ford. George didn't want Ford because he had already been in 3 of his films. He didn't want him to become his 'Bobby Deniro".
Amazing to see there was a sequence with him hanging on to the periscope. Maybe it was better to leave it out, but I liked to see that they at least filmed it.
Belloq being dressed while preparing to perform the ceremony, reminds me of the Witch King of Angmar getting the same treatment, before leading the charge from Minas Morgul in Return of the King.
Ford seems so happy in these. Like he was actually having fun while making movies. I know he never really wanted to be an actor to begin with, but it's like Hollywood pressured him into so many roles over the years that he lost any joy for filmmaking.
He never cared too much for his Han Solo character (even though WE loved him) but he did and does love Indy. Here's hoping that number 5 will be as good as the first 3 and lightyears better than number 4...
He became really jaded when his ex an ET screenwriter took half his billion dollar fortune in the divorce. Then he turned into a guy who didn't want to be there.
8:05 which is exactly why Sean Connery was cast as his father in Last Crusade in spite of the 12 year difference between him and Harrison Ford, because Lucas felt who better to play Indy's father than the original James Bond.
Wait I thought the story was that Harrison got sick during the day they were filming the fight with the swordsman, so they changed the scene to have him draw his gun and shoot him. Here we see incomplete pieces of film for a proper fight between them. I thought they changed the scene before any filming began.
Ford was the perfect choice for the fm but it was a happy accident as Tom Selleck would have been Indy if it wasn't for the Magnum P. I pilot being unexpectedly picked up by a network and him being contractually obliged to do it. Incidentally I believe there's an outtake where John Rhy Davies has an upset stomach (as did much of the cast and crew) when filming in North Africa and he inadvertently had a trouser accident when filming a scene in wihe has to bend over. I. Also surprised to see the whip v swordsman fight here as I was always led to believe it wasn't filmed due to Ford being unwell on the day of filming, although on this evidence it looks like maybe they only filmed part of it before Ford felt unwell.

"Because speed and range were severely limited underwater while running on battery power, U-boats were required to spend most of their time surfaced running on diesel engines, diving only when attacked or for rare daytime torpedo strikes. The more ship-like hull design reflects the fact that these were primarily surface vessels that could submerge when necessary."
@@whez08 This is what I always believed. They weren't at war yet and these diesel electric subs traveled faster on the surface.
Loved seeing Spielberg wearing a Star Wars cap during one of those scenes.
Saw this in '81 when it came out. Can't believe it's been 40 years.
its weird to think the timespan between now and this being made, is the same timespan between this being made and pearl harbour.
@@nathaniliescutotherescue6047 pretty soon the release of this movie will be closer to 1936 than it is to the present day
I’ve been watching these movies for more than twenty five years yet this is the first time I’ve watched these bloopers and outtakes.
Karen Allen would have made a really good princess Leia if Carrie Fisher didn't accept the role. Karen auditioned for it as well.
Carrie Fisher gets a lot of love as Leia, for good reason, but Karen Allen would have done an amazing job as well.
Very much underrated actress and an absolute babe to boot.
man did you see how strong Harrison Ford was? Alfred Molina's not a small man, but Harrison lifted him out of that hole with one arm like he was a mannequin
That man was the ultimate man - be still my heart ❤❤❤
Wow. Never saw bloopers and outtakes of my favorite movie. Super cool.
I always liked superheroes growing up. Batman, Superman, Spiderman but my favourite action hero was a geeky professor who obtained rare antiquities in his spare time
There is a reason why I adore these films
Classic as always. Only one person can be Indiana Jones and that is Harrison Ford! Let's hope that the 5th movie will be good
I hope but if they have their way I’m not sure it will be lol.
it won't lol
It won't
I think South Park is gonna make another raping episode
Not with Pheobe Waller Bridge involved
True story, my uncle was on this set as a still photographer… This will always be my favorite in the series ! Love this movie …
I first watched Raiders of the Lost Ark (and Temple and Crusade) in 2008, it was around the time Crystal Skull was in theaters. I was 9 at the time. I thought all 4 of these movies were made at the same time and I got to see them all in quick succession, I had no concept of the idea that the first three Indy movies were made in the 80's.
Been a long time since I've seen these movies, I have a sealed 4 movie blu-ray collection sitting in my DVD collection waiting to be watched.
In my heart I would like to think this movie was perfect in every first take. But this is Gold.
Wow this is fantastic! These deleted scenes and outtakes and bloopers, and this was what 1980? I love finding videos like this on UA-cam. And raiders is one of my favorite movies.
This was the greatest movie ever made when I was a child. I watched it so many times the VHS tape melted.
I'm glad they cut these scenes from the movie
It slows the general continuity of the film.
The scenes where Spielberg appears to direct the actors who had forgotten their lines and motivation were great to see!
Ford = Legend. Indy = Icon.
The shooting of the killer sword dude worked so much better. An iconic moment in movie history.
This was so great to see. One of my favourite films ever!
The only movie I ever saw where I was literally on the edge of my seat.
The famous "Indy's Pistol vs the Big Sword" final chosen scene was Harrison Ford's idea. He didn't feel good and wanted to cut it short. Great choice!
The Indy lashed to the periscope scene explained how he was able to stow away on the Nazi U-Boat.
Cause he had the shits
Montezuma revenge & 103 temperature.
did U-boats have the periscope up all the time??? What would have happened if they retreated the periscope??
@@swifty1969 At the island...
German#1: "What is this?"
German#2: "It is a drowned American stowaway. Judging by the whip, I'd say he was a lion tamer."
German#1: "Cool hat though."
@@swifty1969 The larger problem is that U-Boats of the era could only operate submerged for a few hours at a time, and traveled slowly while doing so. They weren't at war in 1936, so they probably would have traveled on the surface, except maybe for their approach to the base, assuming it was secret and they didn't want to let the Greeks or British know what they were doing.
Can't believe this was 40 years ago.
It's not the years, it's the....actually yeah it's the years
Oh now why did you have to go and say that?
I was successfully in denial about the passage of time as I thought back to when I first saw this in the theater.
I was 15 years old, a teen-ager, now I am a 55 old man. 😩
Karen Allen was and still is a stunning woman.
she's a rare beauty.
Seeing the actor who plays "Satipo" smile made realize, "Holy shit, is that same the guy who played Doc Oc in Spiderman 2!?", and it was! (Alfred Molina)
7:38 love how they just jam it in and adjust instead of carefully fitting it 😂🤣
The most handsome actor in the history of movies.
Incredibly hard work making such a film! Spielberg and great actors make it seem easy!
Amazing! Thank you very much!
I'm reading the novelization of this and I recognize some of the outtakes/deleted scenes that happen in the book!🤣👌
They way Harrison picked up Alfred from the hole, that was strong move.
He had to be strong to hold on to the front of the Army truck and rappel underneath it
I was in 8th grade and got to see a screening in San Francisco, and I distinctly recall the deleted periscope scene, although I think scenes of him clinging and suffering through a storm. My favorite movie!
Loved the scenes, thanks!
That music was obnoxious though.
You can hear another reason why they redo their dialogue afterward. Stomping around on the 'cave' floors reveals they are just plywood covered in dirt.
Raiders 'Map leads to hidden entrance'
Last Crusade 'Map leads to tourist attraction'
In an alternate universe they are watching the version where the sword fight actually occurs and I feel so sorry for them.
Back when movies were still made on location. Now, everything is green screened, and computerized. It's just not the same.
1:08 I like how Spielberg is always just outside the frame
I saw this the first night in was in the theatres. It was a helluva lot of fun for the audience, especially being the first to see it. What a blast!
I've seen this movie so many times. First time I've seen this stuff! This is awesome!
Birthed?
"I love you" auf den Augenliedern. Super Idee!
Harrison's laugh is everything I needed to hear today 🤍
No, it was NOT inspired by James Bond, Spielberg wanted to direct a Bond movie but Lucas said he had something even better he could direct instead - Raiders Of The Lost Ark.
To all y’all interested (and too young to simply know this) the film is called Raiders of the Lost Ark.
It was only on DVD rereleases (subsequent to the two sequels) that they added the “Indiana Jones and the…” part, as that was the titling format for those two films.
But at the time of the release of the original, nobody would have heard of the character, and it wouldn’t have made any sense.
And for some reason it bugs me when I see “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.”
Just bugs me.
Get a life. And it won’t bug you anymore 😃
Dude, everyone here know the name of the movie. Plus, it's in the title of this video. (also in the movie)
"But at the time of the release of the original, nobody would have heard of the character, and it wouldn’t have made any sense." - this is an absolutely logical thing, which does not need to be explained to anyone (who has common sense).
Needless comment
@@DrJones20 indeed
@dacsus
Some people still think it has Indiana Jones in the title. It's annoying because they properly think I'm lying. Like why would I even?
I'm glad Steven got his first choice for Indy which was Ford. George didn't want Ford because he had already been in 3 of his films. He didn't want him to become his 'Bobby Deniro".
“Hello, Peter!”
“Ooops… too soon?”
A young Alfred Molina (aka Doc Oct for our younger viewers) at the start, great movie, love Karen Allen.
Background music is too loud
Karen Allen fu incredibilmente strepitosa e altrettanto sottovalutata da Hollywood
"This is gold Jerry ..... Gold!!" :V
Haven't seen this movie in a long time. I'd forgotten how many amazing English actors there are.
Simply the best Indiana jones movie
Not Harrison actually taping Steven Spielbergs mouth💀💀
I think what he didn't like was the whole celebrity thing and how big SW got
He became really jaded when his ex an ET screenwriter took half his billion dollar fortune in the divorce. Then he turned into a guy who didn't want to be there.
@@steveconn Melissa Matheson
8:05 which is exactly why Sean Connery was cast as his father in Last Crusade in spite of the 12 year difference between him and Harrison Ford, because Lucas felt who better to play Indy's father than the original James Bond.
Sometimes I forget Doc Ock was in Raiders
Oh my..Harrison Ford..member of stallone the Expendables and the Greatest Indiana Jones ever! Legendary Action Hero with charisma👍.
What a piece of gorgeous man Harrison ford was. Stunningly handsome.
I like the scene where he shoots the swordsman. He's telling the viewer “you want action? Yeah look elsewhere”
Such an amazing classic Harrison is a legend
L'absence du merveilleux duo Marion/Indie, dans les épisodes suivants, a beaucoup nuit à la qualité de cette série de films.😮
True classic, hard to beat 80’s Spielberg productions. Today Hollywood has to recycle old movie or make poop.
Wait I thought the story was that Harrison got sick during the day they were filming the fight with the swordsman, so they changed the scene to have him draw his gun and shoot him. Here we see incomplete pieces of film for a proper fight between them. I thought they changed the scene before any filming began.
Thinking same. Looks like they limited the retakes because of his condition. No more with the whip, let me just shoot him.
Steven had a lot of patience and a great director.
In an alternate universe Tom Selleck is Indiana Jones
The music is a bit loud, but otherwise - AWESOME!
