It always surprises me when people assume Stacy is lying and taking advantage of Mike, rather than that she is the frightened, slightly paranoid widow of a murdered cop living alone and imagining or dreaming bad shit.

The writers left the thing with Stacey a tad vague on purpose. But they personally believe that she's not manipulating Mike for money. They believe that she's genuinely under traumatic stress and not having a good time. And thats the impression I got when i first watched that episode.

It is deliberately ambiguous, and we’re definitely meant w/o wonder what’s actually going on with her, but it all boils down to the same thing: Mike can see she just doesn’t feel safe in that house anymore so he’s going to get them out of there, and at the end of the day whether she’s trying to manipulate him or she honestly believes it doesn’t really make much difference to him.

Left to be vague. In the end it doesn't matter. The only purpose is to show why Mike ended up where he did.

Thanks for the great reaction! So many nods to BB in this ep: the twisting pig toy Mike used as a distraction, Ice Station Zebra (which becomes Saul's loanout name), even the map of states surrounding NM with the "blue" markers looked like Hank's setup tracking Heisenberg's blue meth.

I think Mike's daughter-in-law is just paranoid, freaked out, etc... He sees an opportunity to help her out and be closer to his grandaughter by playing into her paranoia. He didn't say "ya must be some gunshots, someone's shooting random houses!" but he said "that's it, we're getting you out of here, end of story".

  • @BasedNate

I don’t know if his daughter in law was trying to use him, more that she was just paranoid after the stuff she was told about her husband. I think she was just scared and getting worked up. But I’m not sure, was never certain about that bit tbh.

Same, that sort of distress isn't something a nurse could pull off convincingly, if she were using him they should have made her character an actress 😂
Though I admit I never figured out what the bullet mark on the house was. She said it wasn't there before, but she'd have to be mistaken since Mike kept guard that night.

Stacey was willing to tell Mike how afraid she was, but she was not willing to allow him to stay the night. This does not sound like the actions of someone feeling overwhelming paranoia or PTSD as some other posters are suggesting. If someone's fears are irrationally strong, they will do anything to help relieve that stress.
The next day Stacey insists there were shots fired that night. We know this isn't true. Stacey then shows proof of the gun shots with some "gunshot marks" on her house. It is left vague on purpose as it brings the question "Did Stacey make those marks before calling Mike?"
Mike feels such a strong deep need to help his family that he won't even question the event. Mike looks for any excuse to fill his son's void and provide for his family. Does Stacey sense this need in Mike? Is Stacey just using Mike selfishly, or does she want to help him by validating his need to help her?

For 10 years Jimmy DID make a change. After Chuck got him out of legal trouble, he left Chicago. Marco tries to get him to stay and scam one last time. Jimmy flat.out refused and left. He explicitly said that he doesn't want to squander this second chance he's got.
He got a job in the mail room and was on the straight and narrow. He was inspired to study law and he did so BY HIMSELF, in secret. He didn't wanna bother Chuck because he knew he'd be busy etc. He did it all by himself, and passed the exact same bar exam that Chuck did.
All because he respected Chuck, cared for him, and ultimately wanted to respect him and the work he did saving Jimmy by being proper.
He was absolutely on the road to change. Now, he does employ an underhanded tactic or two when he feels absolutely TRAPPED and broke (the whole Betsy Kettleman thing). After the mistake with the skate twins, he goes right back to regular PD work. Only using little scams here and there to boost his business (the advertising board incident). But he continues to try and do the right thing.
It is only after Chuck's DEEP betrayal (and I really do think that sometimes people underplay just how awful a betrayal this is) that Jimmy goes back to Chicago etc.

Chuck’s “witnessing” is not about wanting Jimmy to fail or just about watching Jimmy fail. As a named partner in the firm, Chuck has significant responsibility to protect the firm and make sure that it is not exposed to liability. This is not just for his own interests, but to protect everyone that is working at HHM, depending on the firm for their jobs and salaries, etc. If Chuck really does believe that Jimmy will do some illegal shit as a lawyer with a relationship with HHM, then Chuck arguably has a legal responsibility to keep an eye on Jimmy, inspect his work, etc. - at least as far as it could expose HHM to liability.

it's not just that Jimmy didn't ask permission, though that's a huge part of it, it's also that the brand image that David & Main has been trying to build up for years is one of a prestigious and upright lawfirm that big bank and corporations would be comfortable being associated with. That commerical makes them seem like some low-class ambulance-chaser hucksters...

I get one is often on Jimmy's side when watching this for the first time. But the way he got clients was not legal, and it could easily give the opposing lawyers and opportunity to destroy their case.
Chuck might seem like an a**hle pointing it out.But the reason he is asking these questions and others are not, is because he knows that Jimmy always takes shortcuts while the other lawyers just assume he did it the right way.

I don't know why Jimmy's argument was accepted but he reactor like that. He was clearly lying. He bribed the bus driver to make the situation happen. There are several layers of laws broken. I don't buy the argument that Jimmy only relapsed because of Chuck. He was running scams this season before he ever learned that Chuck was the one who refused to hire him. Does Jimmy have no free will? A lot of people face setbacks in their career and they don't suddenly resort to breaking the law. And now here you are in your outro complaining that Jimmy couldn't work with a group or follow the law, exactly what Chuck feared the whole time.
"Fuck Chuck for making sure Jimmy follows the law."
    5 seconds later
"Kim's right. It looks bad on people who vouch for Jimmy when he breaks the law."

Those with such a mentality are not normal human beings, regardless of whether or not they think they are.
