    Mike's encounter with Tuco is insane. I love it when characters who didn't get a chance to meet in Breaking Bad, interact in Better Call Saul. Yes, that's Krazy-8 and yes that's the guy whom Walt bought a gun in BB. All the BB Cameos in this episode is an icing on a cake

    Stacey isn’t using Mike.
    She lived in a rough neighbourhood and felt paranoid about it - likely heightened by the PTSD of losing her husband. She saw and heard innocuous things that she built up in her mind as meaning danger for her and her daughter. Mike knows she wasn’t in danger, but he wants her to feel safe - hence why he wanted her to move out somewhere better. If he’d just explained to her that she wasn’t in danger (like he knew) that wouldn’t be fixing the underlying insecurity of living in that area.
    If we were meant to take from those scenes that she was using him, then Mike would also know that. But the whole point is that Mike is taking these massive burdens on himself in silence because that’s who he is.

    • @dunringill1747
      @dunringill1747 8 місяців тому

      I agree Stacey wanted to live in a better neighborhood but as for the rest - I'm just not buying it. It doesn't add up for me. If Stacey were really that paranoid she would have been happy to have Mike sleeping on her couch. She didn't know Mike was guarding her house overnight when she concocted her lie. She made the fake bullet mark on her house that very morning to help sell that lie.
      As for Mike - he absolutely knew Stacey was lying but he didn't care. His pain & guilt over breaking his son was so strong he would use any excuse to help his family - including making dirty money. Stacey gave him that excuse.

    I don’t think Mike’s daughter-in-law was ever manipulating him. I think she was legitimately scared, especially after she learned about Mike and her husband, and what Mike did to the cops that killed him. Plus her legitimate fear is a good excuse to get Mike back in the game. I can’t imagine he would let somebody take advantage or manipulate him.

    The issue with the commercial is not just about the fact that Jimmy didn’t respect the chain of command in the firm. It is also very much about the content of the advertisement. Lawyers have a complicated and subtle relationship with emotional appeals or manipulation. When they are doing things like trying to persuade a jury, they are undoubtedly using many of the same techniques that are used in advertising, marketing, acting and entertainment, but lawyers almost never want to be seen or recognized to be employing such tactics. Rather, they want to be able to maintain the pretense that the pursuit of the law is an emotionless, wholly rational, often mechanical endeavor free from manipulation of baser instincts or emotional appeals - to do otherwise opens the door to impure motives that would besmirch the law and lessen deserved respect for it (which respect it depends upon.) That’s a large part of why most law firms don’t advertise on TV; and when they do, they run bone dry, boring ads like the one Davis & Main previously did informing about the existence of a class action lawsuit. They run those kinds of ads not because the lawyers are dumb or because they don’t know how to hire marketing and videography professionals, but because they don’t want there to be any possible inference that they are engaging in manipulative solicitation - for which there can actually be negative legal consequences beyond just the hit to the firm’s reputation.
    Had Jimmy shown his ad to the partners before running it, they almost certainly would have killed it. Jimmy knew that. His decision not to get prior approval from the partners wasn’t just because he lacked confidence in the quality of the commercial (quite the opposite), but because he was certain that they would reject it on wholly separate grounds from whether it would be effective in getting people to call Davis & Main. Jimmy was breaking more rules than just the chain of command in the firm. He knew it and chose to do it anyway.

    Primate - Totally agree that Chuck handled it wrong with Jimmy from the beginning. Instead of using Howard, I wish Chuck had told Jimmy straight up how he still feels uneasy about 'Slippin' Jimmy' and just cannot shake that feeling.
    As for Mike - He stripped that gun away from Tuco immediately with no effort. That act gave me the feeling that if it were a real fight between Mike and Tuco, the old man would have won with a well placed throat punch, like he did to Sobchak in the episode "Pimento".

    Mike took a half measure when he should have gone all the way. Seems that he didn’t learn his lesson until Breaking Bad days.
    I don’t think Jimmy was scared to show Cliff the commercial. He was impatient and impetuous, didn’t want to wait a whole week to talk to management about it. He didn’t bother to think about the consequences, or perhaps didn’t care about the consequences.
    I think Jimmy only took the job at Davis & Main because Kim basically got it for him. He didn’t really want to work there. He wants to be his own boss. He cannot work under superiors and follow their rules.

      He wouldn’t have slept through bullets, and in fact we will see him do enough grunt stakeout work to know he doesn’t fall asleep on the job. This doesn’t mean she’s intentionally using him, though. She’s traumatized by her husband’s death and all the subsequent ugliness about his job that it exposed, she’s alone & afraid in a place far away from the familiar surroundings she grew up in, she very likely really is dreaming these scary things and then convincing herself that they’re real.

      Saying Stacey has PTSD while knowing she refused Mike's protection of sleeping on the couch does not add up. Same goes for the fake bullet mark made fresh on her house to help sell her story.
      Stacey had no idea Mike was guarding the house. He is a pro that would never have slept through gunfire, much less a newspaper slapping the ground.
      Mike knows Stacey was lying but just doesn't care. Mike broke his boy. The pain and guilt of this is so strong, Mike is looking for any excuse to help his family - including earning dirty money to do it. Knowing that Stacey is willing to accept the dirty money makes it all easy for him.
