2019 Kia Sorento Review - First Drive in 4K

- Опубліковано 9 бер 2018
- For 2019 Kia gave their largest crossover a nip/tuck in the form of new bumpers, headlamps, a few interior changes, a tweaked suspension, new transmission and the removal of the slow-selling 2.0L turbo engine. Fuel economy improves a hair, the third row seat becomes standard and Kia is promising there will be a small diesel engine for those interested in high-economy oil burners.

Recently purchased a 2018 Sorento SX-L based on several factors. We had a 2012 Sorento that had given us great service for 80K miles. No problems, at all. Got a very good price on the new Sorento (about 8K under msrp). And got a good trade-in price for the 2012 vehicle, about 20% over blue book.
Not much buyer's remorse for not waiting for the 2019 model. The eight speed transmission would probably give us a couple of additional mpg's, a bit of a weak spot for the V6. On the other hand, the six speed in our car is excellent and the 5,000 lb towing capacity has to be paid for in mpg's somehow. The LED headlights in the 2019 model would be nice but the lights in the 2018 were an improvement over the previous year and met the IIHS standards to give the Sorento a "Top Safety Pick +" rating. So no complaints there. Frankly I'm a little disappointed that the 2019 model is a tiny bit longer than the 2018. One of the strong points for us was the fact that the Sorento is such an ideal size and though the lengthening is minor, we rejected some competitors because they were simply too damn big with no apparent functional advantage. (See the otherwise excellent Mazda CX-9 and the VW Atlas.)
We did look at alternatives. We don't need a dedicated off-road vehicle, but living in the Pacific NW near the mountains messy weather and winter skiing make AWD a highly prized feature. The closest competitor for us was the Ford Edge Sport. I loved the 2.7 L V6 Turbo but my wife is the main driver of the SUV and she was less impressed. And though we don't often need the third row of seats, that trumped the Ford for her. I couldn't convince her that automated parking in the Ford balanced the scale.
I've seldom stuck with a brand, much less a specific model, when I purchase a new car. The exceptions were a couple of Mazdas and Saab 96's back in the stone age. But I have to say that deciding to stick with a Kia Sorento was an easy decision; it's a very, very well designed and built vehicle.
First off, I'm not a Kia fanboy, rather a cynical retired mechanical engineer. My previous SUV was a BMW X550 with a Dinan stage 2 tune. I also own a Jaguar F type V8S and a 1996 Impala SS.
However, I love driving our 2016 Kia Sorento SXV6. 42,000 miles, never had to be in the shop one time, dead reliable, no check engine lights like my $80K BMW, not even a squeak. Super comfortable ride.
So after researching all similarly priced SUVs, I'm planning on getting a 2019 Kia Sorento. Not because our 2016 has given me any excuse to replace it, just that I want something new and shiny. A pretty shallow reason really. Anyway, that's my input for what it's worth. And Alex's reviews are spot on. thank you.
rdvideoclips Glad to hear that from someone who understand Cars! I just ordered a 2019 SXL after a whole year of not being sure what to choose! I researched every single 7 seater in the mid size crossover segment and Sorento was a winner every time (at least for me)
I hope that I made the right decision.
rdvideoclips and Zakaria - how are your Sorento doing? I'm also considering getting a Sorento to replace my mercs
Nicholas Lim We love it! It is an amazing crossover and Kia generally is very reliable!
Only thing I don’t like is the fact that she is a bit thirsty.
Overall I recommend getting one!
@@somezak Thanks! May just take the plunge and get it!
@@somezak How are the headlights for night time driving? I heard they are not too good on really dark roads. The adaptive headlights they said point too much on the ground and not far ahead. Thanks
Not surprised Alex on Autos is growing. This channel sets the standard for quality content and comparable data to evaluate new cars.
Thank you so much for not inserting a commercial in the middle of your video. That is SO much better than the other videos that abruptly show a commercial in the middle of the video. Thanks for the great videos!
Did a bunch of research on this and other SUVs over the last month for my wife. We bought a Sorento SX last week, due in no small part to your review. Took it on a weekend trip, and we love it! There are a few other reviewers that I watch as well, but you are my go-to guy when I need in-depth information. Thank you, and keep up the great work!
I liked the in-video ad! :D Thanks for your high-quality reviews every week!
Awesome quality review with no commercial. Keep it up Alex!
100% the best auto journalist. You really get after what consumers like me really want! Thanks Alex
Hey Alex, I work at a Kia dealership and am fairly new to sales in general. Just like to say your videos are amazing and help out a lot on a sales point of view as well. Obviously we are trained in the details and have a constant hands on of these vehicles but it’s always informative to watch reviews and walk arounds of our vehicles. And you give a lot of insight on things salespeople often overlook
HUGE respect for not playing some cheap watch sposner spot. You're the best Alex!
He really is. He deserves 1+ million subscribers, instead you got these idiot "car" guys on YT showing off their cars (not even really talking about anything informative) and they have 1 million subscribers. It's like a dumb reality show with those guys and people eat out of their hands! It's ridiculous.
What the heck is a "sposner"? LOL!
Always appreciate the detail and thoughtfulness of your reviews! Thanks!
your videos are my new guilty pleasure. I still have a year and change before my new purchase, but your videos are helping me zone in on the best possible option for me and my family. Thank you.
I am just going to reiterate what another user said: HUGE respect for not playing some cheap add that is not relevant to the video. Amazing reviews as always! Keep up the good work Alex!
Hi Alex. I must've watched this specific review at least 40 to 50 times. Very informative and professionally done. Seats are crazy comfortable. I just purchased the same trim and color and am more than pleased with it. Lots of power and features. I decided to add on a hitch with wiring harness, auto start and block heater for our Canadian winters. And that warranty is awesome. This is my second Kia and the service is phenomenal. Value is crazy good as well. Vehicle is very planted. Weather is calling for 7 to 8 inches of snow tomorrow. Can't wait to test out that AWD and locking differential if need be. Thanks again for the great reviews. Keep up the good work :) ! You are my go to expert for vehicle reviews always :) .
Good job. Three reviews this week? You are the best Alex.
Thanks Alex! Keep up the awesome reviews!!!
Great review of the 2019 Kia Sorento! Thanks for all of the hard work Alex....
Alex for me is the best vehicle reviewer out there. He is just perfect for the job! No more no less! Thanks Alex for your endless effort helping us making a wise decision in purchasing a vehicle. Good luck!
Wow! This interior black/saddle color is super classy! LIKE!
As always, great review! Sorento has always been one of my favorites and this refresh is no exception - keep it up Kia!
Excellent review as always Alex. I too am impressed with this refreshed Sorento.
Excellent review! Very articulate, accurate, and the pace of the presentation is perfect, imho.
Ridiculously good, detailed review. Thanks!
Probably the best car/truck/SUV/van reviewer. Good work!!
This is such a beautiful video, Alex. Lovely scenery. Also a great review.
Great review, thanks Alex!! :)
Thanks for the insight on the Kia Sorrento. Great channel too, Thanks Alex!
Always a well balanced and helpful review. Just excellent !!
Very thorough review that was clearly presented. Your tone of voice is perfect for presentations. This will be my “Go To” channel for all future vehicle research. Thanks and keep up the Good Work!
Great review, Alex. Thanks.
As always, another excellent review!
Nice job Alex im always like how you explain details about vehicles
great review as always
Sure i will... i watch a lot of car and truck reviews and you are definitely the BEST in terms of informativeness (doug demuro to humor myself). It would be detrimental if anyone skip his review on whatever cars you are interested.
I was waiting for this video. Thanks.
Great review,as usual, thanks
Finally I've been waiting for this updated :)
I enjoyed your smooth, clear, and well spoken review. Thank you
Thanks Alex. Was waiting on this
I really like your reviews, very in depth and detailed. Thanks, and keep up the great work.
Another nice review, Alex. Thanks
Very nice review. Your reviews are very informative.
Another good indepth look into the Sorento, I have 40,000 km on a 17 SXplus and we love it with no regrets. Gets 26 mpg driving 10 over with no problem. One of the best things about the Kia is ease of maintenance , air and oil filters easily accessible from the top and drain at the back of skid plate cover. The cabin air filter is just behind the globe box easy for anyone to change. The full stop and go cruise control works great.
You’re really good at reviews. Keep up the good work
Thank you Alex for the video.
Excellent review, as always. Thank you
I very much enjoy AoA reviews and have numerous times used him and his channel as the base point for researching cars. He presents information that is unbiased, thorough and relevant to what I’m researching. He’s the benchmark for which to start the research, he’s also the continued reliance for perpetual questions, and what sets him apart from other reviewers is his practical approach to conveying his content. Clearly he does his homework, but takes it the extra step and asks himself, “What would the viewer want to know?” as he writes his script accordingly. 10/10 for AoA.
Great review!!
I was already subscribed, but I liked the video!
Your review are so informative
Nice review alex
great review yet again,
Great vid, as usual! Thank you
Thank you for what you do - keep going!!!!!!!!!
I really appreciate that you have started to more frequently show the rear turn indicators on cars!
Yes I noticed that too. And that's a good thing !
Alexander Schlesinger agree
Can’t understand why all exterior lighting on this car is LED except for the rear indicators.
Saw that with the new Honda Accord also. The brake lights were LED and the amber was a regular bulb.
This is a hidden pleasure of mine on all cars. :)
Another great review!
great review....very thorough and fair
Getting close to buying a new car within the family of Kia, this appears to be the selected one for my wife and I. Your evaluations have helped me navigate all of the models and features, thank you.
Great as always
You are definitely one of the best on professional car evaluators in the public media!
Alex your still on top of the heap.
Kia really impresses with its updates. Great job
Hi Alex! Excellent review, I have a 2014 Sorento EX with the 2.4L theta II engine with 20,000 miles, it has engine problems that in the US there is a recall for those theta 4 cel engines. That recall is not recognized in Peru where I live and no warranty from the Kia Limautos dealer where I bought it new. So be aware of those 2.4 liter theta engine. Other wise, are great SUVs if there is good support from dealers as for every brand. Cheers! Good work!!
Great video!
GREAT REVIEW!
My Uber was a model prior to this refresh and that thing was plush and so comfortable in the backseat. ❤️
I look forward to seeing your full review of the Sorrento.
thanks alex keep going
AOA is the most trustworthy source for automotive reviews.
I liked the video just for the advertisement you did. Keep up the good work.
Kia Sorento is surprisinly looks cool. Kia really stepped up the competition. I like the fact that safety tech is standard in EX and above, 360 camera, refreshed infotainment system.
This car is absolutely beautiful!
Thank you for the review, I have been comparing (based on proximity to where I live) the Honda pilot and Subaru ascent. I never would have considered Kia before your review.
Unfortunate that we never got a full review for this vehicle. Was looking forward for more info before I take the plunge and buy one. Thanks for the reviews Alex
Excellent as always..Can you please do for new 2019 Subaru Ascent. This one definitely gonna throw other 3 row crossovers out of the water
Welcome to CO Alex. We like your reviews and invite you to perform your outdoor reviews here when you get time. Also, if you could include long term reliability and service costs in your reviews that would be very useful
Alex and Tom Voelk are the most professional auto reviewers on YT!
Wow, Kia has really used their game with the Sorento! I really need to see this 2019 @ my local dealer!
Consistently very informative! review Kia/Hyudai is hot in improving their product line which is very good for the industry& consumers Kudos!
Thanks, Alex. Great review as always. However, I'll wait for the Subaru Ascent.
More than a "hint" about the diesel, I think. KIA offers that 2.2L diesel in most other markets including Australia. I'm surprised to see the turbo 4 cylinder disappear from the options so soon and it leaves a large hole between the base 4 cylinder and the V6. Betting that the diesel appears sooner rather than later.
It's worth noting, by the way, that what is considered a 2019 model in the US is apparently already available as a 2018 model in other markets, most notably in Australia where the diesel engine, the eight speed transmission, the LED headlights are all included in the top trim level of the 2018 model.
First ad I'd happily respond to. Best in the business, up there with Cooley and Mat Watson.
Wonderful review as always! Is their any chance we’ll see the new Hyundai Kona anytime soon? Enjoy smaller crossovers plus it being all new piques my interest. ;)
Alex on Autos is unmatched when it comes to the most in-depth reviews! I will be interested in the low-end price of an EX model that includes Adaptive Cruise control, 3.3 L engine and allows me to tow in the 3500 - 5000 range. I need to stay in the $34,000 range. I am eager to see what I can get for what price!
Superb review and first comment
As always great job Alex! I'm considering getting a new 2019 Sorento or a Highlander. To be honest I'm not excited spending $35,000 for either of those cars but I need a daily commuter good for family and reliable with a bit of luxury. I wish these cars had a bit more personality but I would like to keep this car for at least 10 years so reliability is a must. I'm worried that Kia is the flavor of the month right now (remember the 2011 sonata) and 5 yrs from now they will be unpopular. I don't see that happening with the Highlander. Thanks again for the great information, wow this will be a close choice.
Definitely something to consider along with the CX-9, Explorer, Pilot and Traverse.
Good review. I am interested in your follow up as to how quiet the interior is. I have a 2016 LX 4-cylinder purchased in 2015. My gripe is with the tire and wind noise at highway speeds. Hopefully the 2019 Sorento is a bit quieter. I took a ride at highway speeds in my brothers new 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid and my impression is that the interior is quieter than my 2016 Sorento. Thanks also for your recent review of the Outlander Hybrid.
Excellent review, and I must say I'm impressed with the current Sorento.
... Yep, it s a great car, I own one, worth every cent, so, from 2019 I think we have a lot more to see from KIA, especially Sorento series, go for diesel if you can, it can't go wrong for the money value, now sorentos are included in my taxi biz fleet, and is just awesome in the terms of customer's response, and everything else.
I wish Kia would make a midsized pickup to compete with the Tacoma and Colorado/canyon
Hyundai is coming out with the Santa Cruz hopefully soon, I'm waiting and I'm a Chevy guy. GM is in the middle of a class action lawsuit for their 8 speed transmission, in the Colorado and just about everything else they sell including the new Blazer. Sorento, Santa Fe and Highlander are high on my list for sure.
Beautiful car. I have a 2019 Sorento SX as a loaner for a week and it rides so smoothly. Great 8 speed transmission. Engine is smooth as well. However the one thing I find weird is that while they were comfortable, I couldn’t get the seats adjusted well enough for me. It just wouldn’t go down low enough for me. I feel like I’m sitting on the vehicle instead of in it.
Great review as always. The Sorento is an awesome vehicle. You reference the Highlander, but the Highlander looks abut 10 years out of date. I sat in a bunch of them recently. The exterior looks fine, but inside they are terrible. However, Sorento is beatiful inside and outside. A vehicle that i would like to see reviewed is the Peugeot 3008. I have narrowed down my search to the Peugeot, the Citroen C5 and the Sorento. Sorento is bigger than the other two and slightly bigger than i need, but i like the model so much, that i might buy it.
You say that the interior is largely unchanged but the CD player is missing and the heater controls display have reappeared from their location on the main display.
I only noticed as we test drove the 2017 (we have a 2013 EX) and my wife didn't like that change. The 2019 it's a possibility but she's also old school and likes her CDs.
Great review, as always. Question, though: the Sorento is really quite a package for the money, but one thing bothered me about the 2018 and earlier models of this generation -- the steering at highway speed. Way too vague on center, requiring lots of micro-corrections. Is that still the case with the 2019?
Good that you took my suggestions in your past review and mentioned that this is bigger inside than the highlander and Pilot. However, you still keep saying the CX9 is bigger which it is not. CX-9 has lesser legroom headroom and interior volume.
If you can tell how good is the rear view camera quality on your review. Thanks 👌😃😃
Another top quality product from Kia. Thanks Alex for you review.
that sorento is much nicer than i expected kia.
