We just now recently bought a Kia Sorrento 2019 model and we love it we have had two other ones previously prior to this one and we have never had a single mechanical issue that’s a lot to say because each model that we owned we put over 200,000 miles on
If the KIA Sorento is not worth 48K, then no other car is worth 48K. Top-notch SUV. We got one and love it. Why are TFL negative about the Sorento, they loved the car. Alex what a great car expert.
My wife has a 2016 Sorento AWD. Fairly loaded. Only things missing is the moonroof & leather. Great price. Paid less than 25K. Great in the snow & rain. Just an all around great value. And quick.
However the one thing I hate is the location of the diff lock & shift mode. If you see something on top of it you can inadvertently activate it.
We purchased the 2019 KIA Sorento SXL in summer 2018 and we've driven it for more than 15,000 miles. It is the finest new car my wife and I have EVER owned. My wife is a professional harpist, and her ride must be able to accommodate a concert grand harp with a flat, unobstructed, 6x4 load floor. The harp fits perfectly. It truly is a Goldilocks vehicle for us.
The in-laws are now in their 90s, and we drive them everywhere they need to go. It was critical that they be able to get in and out of our vehicle, in the second row or front passenger seat, without a lot of drama. Mission accomplished. Our younger son is a musician, too, and the music he is performing and recording sounds as good, if not better, than through any other system.
As for the Sorento vs. Santa Fe, we had to rent the latter while our Sorento was in the body shop (don't ask!), and the Santa Fe just felt cheep, under-powered, and had a weird sensation when we applied the brakes. We couldn't wait to get our KIA back.
After watching this video it feels like I have known you guys for ages. Alex, Roman, and Nathan you guys are my favorite car reviewers. Love your shows!
Alex is great, he gives info about real world applications such as the use of child safety seats for example. Nice addition to the already impressive TFL team !!!

Everyone will say it's not worth 48k because "They can't justify spending that money on a Kia". I really don't care if it's a Kia , if it offers good value for the money , great space , and good reliability , I'd gladly pay the money (But the santa fe would be the better option right now).
Jordan Catcher except that the Sante Fe has turbo lag plus the transmission is extremely laggy from a full stop!
Friend paid 52 and change for a stinger gt2. I'd say it was worth it, car is great and the book is still showing strong resale after a year and 12k miles

Yeah. My mom wanted to buy a midsize SUV but even used ( she wants one with leather nav etc. ) they are high 20s. Doesnt matter what brand. She ended up buying an accord for 18 with 45k miles. I love the car but she still wants an suv
SUVs are noted, along with pickup trucks, as high profit margin vehicles for the auto manufacturers. And high profit margin for them means low value for us.

Fun review from my three favorite reviewers. A few points. Alex is correct, I think, in noting that "midsize" three row crossovers covers vehicles of significantly different overall sizes. The KIA is about the shortest of all. It's over 10 inches shorter than the Mazda CX-9. and well over a foot shorter than the humungous GM siblings. So what does one get for that extra length? In some brands there's more overall interior passenger and cargo space. The Mazda CX-9, however, is an exception. Despite its greater length, it offers less passenger room in each of the three rows and less overall cargo capacity than the KIA! Find that surprising? Check the specs.
So what's the deal? The consensus among (overwhelmingly male) reviewers and in comments is that the CX-9 is the best looking midsize crossover. Why doesn't that translate into actual functionality? The answer is the long, long hood and protruding grill of the CX-9. Freud might better explain the appeal to males. I'll just note that sports car designers have long used a long hood and short rear deck to achieve the same appeal. No functional advantage but perhaps it makes men feel more, ahem, "potent."
As far as third row accommodations are concerned, let's be frank. No midsize crossover offers great accommodations for adults. If you need room for five or more adults and their gear on a road trip, you're better off with a minivan or a full size crossover/SUV or even a crew cab pickup. But the Sorento does better than most and considering its overall size, it's impressive. More legroom than either the CX-9 or Highlander, for example. And unlike most other crossovers, the KIA SX-L has leather upholstery and separate HVAC controls in the third row. As Nathan discovered (once the access process was made clear), the third row of the Sorento isn't bad. And for occasional use, especially for a couple of adults or teens, it's very handy.
As far as the V6 engine is concerned, I'd agree with Alex that an update is in order. But it's worth noting that I believe KIA and Hyundai use a turbo version of the same engine in the Stinger and the G70. So there's probably quite a bit of life left in the architecture. Otherwise, it's a perfectly adequate and smooth naturally aspirated V6.
Not really sure what to say about the "dated" controls and cockpit. It's true that KIA hasn't changed it much over the last several years but (imo) it's by far the most intuitive and convenient design of any of the midsize crossovers. And in the top trim SX-L trim it compares very favorably with comparable trims in its competitors. I'm just not sure what the value of change for change sake is.
Price. The elephant in the room appears to be some commentors' reaction to price of the SX-L trim of the Sorento. In the first place, however, that ignores the widespread discounts available for the Sorento. For example, I paid $8000 less than MSRP on a 2018 Sorento in January of this year, several months before the 2019 models were delivered. That was $4000 to $8000 less than the best offer I received for a CX-9 or a Highlander.
But how about resale? Isn't that savings eliminated when the Sorento is replaced? Not in my case. I traded a six year old Sorento SX-L with 75K miles for the 2018 model. The dealer gave me within less than $1000 of the blue book value of a comparable trim 2012 Highlander (the resale champ) with similar mileage and condition. So considering I received a similar discount on the original price of the 2012 model, I made out like a bandit compared to having purchased a 2012 Highlander and trading it for a comparable 2018 model. There is still an urban myth that KIA has a reputation for steep depreciation but it's not borne out in the real world, at least here in the Pacific Northwest.

Nathan, the reason the CX-9 "feels bigger" is because it is! It's 10 inches longer than the Sorento and has less interior room (including in the third row) and less overall cargo space than the Sorento.
My wife bought the EX and we really like it. I just don't like the shifts when the vehicle is cold. Once it gets moving and everything to temp it is good

Anyone complaining about the price hasn't been paying attention - the fully loaded Sorento has cost about this much literally for years now, and as they said it's still less expensive than much of its competition while being nicer or better to drive. Either learn how to negotiate or get a cheaper one if you're surprised a Kia probably surpassed your budget. Several of them do now, but they're worth their price in their respective segment every time.
This is a better value to an Acura MDX or Lexus RX 350 L. As for the Lexus, the interior may have more wood inside, but the infotainment is hard to use and it lacks a touchscreen and CarPlay. Plus, the third row is more cramped vs the Sorrento or MDX.
As for the Acura, the only thing it excels in is acceleration and handling, thanks to the ZF 9 speed, and SH-AWD. The ZF 9 speed has its complaints, and even at $56K for the MDX SH AWD w/ Advanced and Entertainment packages, it still lacks features the Sorrento has: power thigh cushion for driver, panoramic sunroof, napa leather seats, and easier to use infotainment. The luxury brand is one thing both Acura and Lexus excel at vs the Kia, but you’re paying 10-20K more just for that.

Actually, you may see the all new Sorento a lot sooner than three years. This car has been out since 2014 here in Korea. They did a full refresh of the Forte and then just a little more than a year later, gave us the all new model. I hope the new one comes soon.

What's surprising to me is how much of a cost range there is between the lower trim levels and the loaded versions. My wife drives a "not quite base" 2018 model with car play/ Android auto, AWD and the 4 cylinder engine, which was a full $20k less than that. Plenty fine for a family hauler. I'll add that, at least at my elevation, the little 4 does surprisingly well around town.
I am a buying kind. Got a 2016 SX and changing for a 2019 SX tommorrow. I ordered a 2020 grey and turned out to be light blue. I have seen the telluride and the palisade (that really got me thinking), but I still love the Sorento's looks and seems that 2020 is the last year for this version.
We have a group of car dealerships in Ft Lauderdale owned by a man named Rick Case. Any brand that you buy from the Rick Case Group comes with a 10 year/ 100,000 mile powertrain warranty and if you buy a new Hyundai, Kia or Genesis product from them the standard warranty is doubled to 20 yrs/ 200,000 miles.

No one including Kia will expect you to pay MSRP for the fully loaded model.
Those who can't afford any new car are fond of citing MSRP as a definitive measure of price. Those who actually sit down to negotiate a deal have a different experience. Having been through negotiations for a new Sorento, Highlander, and CX-9 earlier this year I can say that the deal I received at the KIA dealer was from $4000 to $8000 less than the best offer I had from the Toyota and Mazda dealers for comparable trims.

All those competitors do directly complete. They are all midsize three row suvs. Some are bigger than others but in terms of price and basic layout they all are similar. Explorer, Acadia, Traverse, Durango, Santa Fe XL, Sorento, Pilot, Highlander, Pathfinder, Atlas,Accent , Cx-9.... all cost between 30-60k and seat 6,7, and 8 and all are designed for families

kris monroe I know what you mean about dedicated. It’s an odd use in this context. But here in this scenario Alex is saying that’s its the only engine option, all Sorento models are dedicated to one engine.
I love our Kia we have the Sportage but it's just as awesome lol.. they are really good on gas and the 4wd system is the best!!!!

We have a 2014 EX. It's been a fantastic SUV for the past five years. We haven't had any real issues at all, and it's held up to two to seven passengers over that time, including two destructive boys. I had a 2013 Dodge Dart that started falling apart immediately, and the Sorrento still looks new after 110,000 miles. ( Ditched the stupid Dodge after two years.) I currently drive a pick-up, and I plan to trade it in on a Kia sedan within six months. I will say that this new one basically looks the same as our 2014 on the interior. If I had a wish for our future Kias, it would be that they update their interiors.
If you're snobby about cars and are "not wanting to buy a Kia", go drive a few. You'll change your mind.

Just went car shopping last month me and my wife have been saying for her (I have a ram) that we liked wanted this Kia suv well Same Buulding had Dodge n jeep vehicles as well and We end up Falling in Love with the Dodge Durango instead loaded out model for few grand Less than the Kia and it has the room , the looks, and the features that I dont think Kia has! So imo Go with a Dodge Durango!! Gets pretty good gas mileage as well for being heavy and having good power with the v6 avrg around 19mpg city and 26 or 27mpg hwy Where my 4 door Ram Hemi gets 13-14mpg city and 18mpg hwy if I'm lucky lol

The new Santa Fe still comes with a turbo. And the Santa Fe XL is continuing for 2019. I work at a Hyundai dealer
The new Santa Fe appears to be an appealing vehicle. But it's a two row crossover making its natural competition vehicles like the Ford Edge and Nissan Murano. I expect the Santa Fe XL to be appealing, as well. But Kia has the Telluride coming in 2019. Both Korean manufacturers are doing a great job.

@@ady9910 KIA has announced that same diesel engine for the US this model year. It's already available in Europe and Asia. I suspect it hasn't already been introduced in the US simply because of production limitations.
Stephen Hendricks they basically took the Sport name off the 2-row for its redesign and added XL to the 3-row, which has only changed in name for 2019. It’s redesign and renaming will come later.
@@RileyAaron90 You're correct, of course. My comment wasn't quite clear. Though I'm a fan of both Kia and Hyundai I think Hyundai has a marketing problem with the new Santa Fe. It appears to be a significant upgrade over the Santa Fe Sport but it now has the same name as the earlier three row Santa Fe. (In fact the Hyundai website even has to tell a reader that the Santa Fe used to be the "Sport.") Meanwhile, the old three row Santa Fe is now the Santa Fe XL, unchanged except for its badge and still sitting on showroom floors. I can understand that Hyundai didn't want to vacate the three row market for the 2019 model year but to consumers it must look like they have to choose between an attractive new model with an old name but only room for five passengers and an old three row model that lacks the bells and whistles of the new Santa Fe (which used to be the Santa Fe Sport.) Get it? I don't envy the job of salespeople trying to explain all this to customers.
Frankly, I think Hyundai might have been better off killing off the three row Santa Fe for the 2019 model year to allow the two row Santa Fe have the spotlight. Then, in 2020 they could introduce a "new" three row crossover with new technology, bells and whistles. (Hopefully with a new name. :))
They should of given that a stinger engine to compete with the explorer or edge, etc...
Actually, the Sorento has the Stinger engine. What it does not have is a twin scroll turbo. No doubt that's a plus for those who might want a hot rod crossover, it's of doubtful utility in vehicles of this kind.

I'm with Nathan. Lease it, with a buy out option at the end of lease. I wouldn't buy this new, unless you got a smokin' deal on it. The depreciation on this thing is horrible.
lance ripplinger depreciation has been better than anticipated actually. No depreciate is great. Kia has a reputation for bad resale and then you have this loaded model, but I’m in the car bizz and they are booking out really strong. Better than several other automaker including Fords Explorer and Cadillac and a few others. The long warranty transfers and pre owned buyers have caught onto that.
That’s a nice vehicle but if you paid 48K or after taxes and financing well over 50K for a Kia you have got to be crazy just due to resell value alone. There are so many other vehicles Cadillac Acura ford edge ST Subarus new three row Toyota highlander that are a better bargain then this Kia though the Kia does look better than all of the above mentioned
Try to get an $8000 discount off MSRP for any of the alternatives mentioned as I received for a KIA Sorento earlier this year. As for resale value, I received a trade-in price on my 2012 Sorento within a thousand dollars of the KBB estimated resale of a comparable 2012 Toyota Highlander. Given the fact that I paid about $7000 less for that 2012 Sorento than for a comparable Highlander, I saved about $6000 on the two transactions combined.
Good for Kia keeping a V6, 4cyl turbo's, not so good. Thank you Kia and Hyundai for forcing car makers to improve their warranties.

From various reviews it appears Subaru has done a fine job with the Ascent. But its major negatives (imo) are its four cylinder turbo engine and CVT transmission compared to the KIA's naturally aspirated V6 and eight speed traditional automatic.

The Santa Fe is 2 years ahead of the Sorento in development
Matt Lopez only on the new tech features. Their steering is column mounted for all trims and the Sorento SX and SXL are rack mounted. The transmission programming is better on the Sorento and so is the engine. The Santa Fe has turbo lag.

Joshua Rutter that’s why a lot of people lease now. New technologies aren’t that reliable yet. I think ford has pretty quiet interiors myself but I guess some might think different.
Nick Henry: Looked seriously at several crossovers earlier this year. Ultimately it came down to the Edge Sport vs the Kia Sorento SX-L. No doubt that the Edge was faster. I liked that; my wife couldn't care less (and it's her daily driver.) Looks are a subjective matter. I liked the Edge but my wife complained that the long hood made it more difficult to see the front corners of the Edge from the driver's seat. She was right and that's the main reason many men would find it "better looking." (It's a Freudian thing.) As far as the interior is concerned it was no contest. Better and more upscale materials, better fit and finish, and better gadgets in the KIA. The Edge wasn't cheaper. In fact, I received virtually identical offers for the two. Those factors combined with much better warranty coverage and third row seating in the KIA made it an easy choice for us.

Nope. It's gotten too expensive and with that $$, I could get in either a loaded 2019 VW Atlas, a Subaru Ascent or a Mazda CX-9. Heck, even a current Cadillac XT-5 crossover. More options are available.
Not in the Pacific Northwest you can't. Nor anywhere else, I suspect.

The SEL Premium Atlas is 49K and it comes with less power, worse fuel economy and much less reliability. It does have more space though.
@@eichler721 I didn't go into detail in my original comment. But here's a more thorough review. Keep in mind that MSRP's are only rough guides to what you can expect to pay for a vehicle. Different brands , different dealers, and serious price negotiations can heavily influence the actual price paid for a car. For example, I paid approximately $40,000 +TTL for a fully loaded 2018 Kia Sorento in January of this year that included options such as remote start, all weather floor and cargo mats, and a four year subscription to realtime traffic monitoring among other items. Altogether, the out the door price was over $8000 less than MSRP. I also seriously negotiated a price for the CX-9 and the Toyota Highlander. The best offers I received were between $4000 and $8000 more than what I paid for the Sorento. But for the purposes of this discussion, let's stick to MSRP comparisons.
First, the easiest one. An equivalent trim level with similar features and options for the Cadillac XT-5 according to the Cadillac website is $60,645 including a $1000 discount. I haven't tried to purchase one but I'm skeptical that any Cadillac dealer would offer an additional discount of $12,000.
Next is the VW Atlas. The SEL Premium trim that's equivalent to the Sorento SX-L has an MSRP $50,650. And that assumes one can be found on a dealer lot. When I was shopping there were literally none available and as of today, they're rare. I wouldn't expect to pay much if any less than MSRP. That's supported by a friend who sells VW's (I bought a GTI at a significant discount from him a few months ago.) I liked the Atlas but as a new model early glitches and problems can be expected and according to Consumer Reports, that's the case with the Atlas.
The CX-9 (Signature) has an MSRP of $48, 335, almost exactly the same as the Sorento. But the CX-9 lacks a panoramic sunroof, has a 4 cylinder turbo engine vs a V6 and has a tow rating 1500 lbs less than the Sorento. The Signature trim is upscale and attractive but the infotainment system and other options (e.g. realtime traffic in the navigation system) are significantly inferior to that of the Sorento. It's much larger on the outside but has less interior passenger room and less overall cargo space. It's a good car but as noted above, I couldn't find a dealer willing to discount its price much below MSRP.
The Subaru Ascent wasn't available when I was shopping but it looks to be a very good buy at approximately $47,000 MSRP with options that more or less match the Sorento SX-L. Again, however, it is a four cylinder turbo engine and with a CVT compared to the Sorento's V6 and eight speed transmission and the interior, while functional isn't as upscale as either the Sorento or the CX-9. I have several "Subar-ite" friends and they love their cars. Two of those friends have looked seriously at the Ascent and they report offers from dealers a few hundred dollars less to about $1000 over MSRP. I'm not a fan of CVT's and I think it's fairly obvious that a naturally aspirated V6 is more reliable and durable than a turbo 4 (and that comes from someone who owns a turbo 4 GTI.) But of the various alternatives at around the price point of the Sorento's MSRP, it looks to be the best buy.
Finally, what none of these alternatives matches is the five year bumper-to-bumper and ten year power train warranty of the KIA. One can, of course, add a third party warranty to match the KIA to any of these cars but that's an additional cost that makes the Sorento an even better value.

Granted that no midsize crossover provides ample third row accommodations. The VW Atlas comes closest. But the Sorento offers more third row room than the much larger CX-9 and the Toyota Highlander. All in a much more efficient size.

Funny how the CX-9 has to sneak into the conversation when they are all basically saying it's the best driving vehicle. The KIA does a lot of things right and if you really needed the extra room than it's a better choice but the top trim CX-9 is a few grand less than this top spec Sorrento and it's just a nicer car inside. Yes it is 10 ices longer mainly because the wheel base is 115 inches almost 5 more than the Sorrento. That is why the ride in the Mazda is better. The CX-9 is a fringe player in this segment. It is just more of a sport/ luxury oriented player than the other's.

I'm not crazy about these unfiltered reviews. I feel like if someone wants to see a car review, they want to see a professional one. Maybe a POV drive would be cool. I personally enjoy the POV drives because it gives you a good understanding of how that car drives.

I own a 2019 Kia Sorento with a V6 engine. It costs $700 to change the spark plugs. Who was the idiot engineer that designed this SUV? I believe there are 5 model years that have this problem.

Not so. Using the "build and price" tools for each model, the total price of the CX-9 (Signature trim) is $47,235 compared to the Kia Sorento (SX-) of $47,480. In addition to the panoramic sunroof of the Sorento, it also has an 8 speed transmission vs the CX-9's six speed box, a naturally aspirated V6 versus a 4 cylinder turbo, a much better infotainment system, and a locking center differential. Further, the KIA has a much, much better bumper-to-bumper and power train warranties. Finally, having actually negotiated a deals for the CX-9 and the Sorento earlier this year, I received a bottom line offer $4000 less for the Sorento than for the comparable CX-9.
You’re right, it looks like the 2019 CX9 is more than the 2018’s were, and yes Kia’s have more rebates. More gears does not mean more better, V6 does not mean more better. Just drive one
@@KansasTornados I have. And an eight gear transmission is not necessarily superior to six gears. However, in this case the Sorento drives more smoothly than the CX-9. That's a function of the combination of the engine and transmission.

@@KansasTornados Let's be clear. The EPA estimates of fuel economy for the 2019 models are: Kia V6 AWD 19-24 Mazda CX9 AWD 20-26. The fact that the Mazda's fuel economy is slightly better is the result of its smaller 4 cylinder engine. That's an advantage that the Kia's more efficient 8 speed transmission cannot make up for. By the same token, however, the 2019 Sorento has slightly better fuel economy than the previous year's model with a six speed transmission (19-23) and the same V6 engine. It's a small gain but KIA's aren't known for fuel efficiency and no doubt they felt any gains were worthwhile.
As far as relative "smoothness" is concerned, it's simply a fact that a V6 engine is inherently smoother than a relatively large 4 banger. I'm not a critic of turbo four cylinder engines, even relatively large displacement versions such as that in the CX9 (and the Mazda6). But one sacrifices relatively smooth operation of more cylinders for equivalent power delivery from fewer cylinders. And the larger the displacement, the greater the difference. It's worth noting that the Mazda's 2.5L engine is among the largest 4 bangers available from any manufacturer. It's power comes in large part from turbocharging, another impediment to an engine's smooth operation. Turbocharging has a number of advantages but smoothness isn't one of them.
I'm not a Mazda hater. I've owned four Mazdas over the years and loved each one, even a significantly flawed RX8 with a rotary engine. (Amazingly smooth but lacking any discernible torque.) I think the CX-9's power delivery is like dogs dancing. When you see it, it's not a question of how well they do it, it's amazing that they do it at all.
