I went without coffee for 2 months during boot camp. The day I graduated I went to a restaurant with my family and had a cup of coffee, and it was truly amazing. Couldn’t stop talking/smiling. Didn’t eat anything, just sat there basking in caffeine’s glory. Very powerful. And I’m very addicted.

I stoped coffee consumption about 25 years ago because of a bad period in my life, I suffered from anxiety and panic attacs. Coffee exacerbated my anxiety and activated a panic attack, so I stopped drinking coffee. The coffee withdrawals consisted of headache 24h/d during 10 days. I woke up with headache and went do bed with headache. During the 10 days I felt ill, but at day 11 I felt good, no headache anymore and stoping caffeine was helpful for me with the anxiety issue. Since then I like to be awake without needing a coffee. I would never have stopped drinking coffee without the anxiety problem.

I basically gave up coffee three months ago, as well as virtually no caffeine intake. I had my first two shots of Starbucks espresso after three months and it was so powerful and intense I wanted to run and walk for miles for hours. That same night my sleep was utterly ruined, I woke up multiple times in the middle of the night. Very powerful drug. I think I am going to continue this caffeine free lifestyle for the foreseeable future. Decaf if I want to "treat" myself.

When I’ve been addicted to anything I’ve always felt that I’m either up or down. If I just consumed the drug, I’m up, and if it’s been hours since, I’m crashed, I feel I need another hit, or sleep.. It’s been two weeks off coffee for me and my energy throughout the day is just at a normal level.. There’s no huge peak in the morning, then crash by noon, then another coffee, then spending my evenings really tired/crashed. My sleeps improved, I just feel normal. I can’t believe I spent like 20 years on caffeine.

So idk.. kind of need to get stuff done at work plus just not feel like a vegetable. Same thing happened to me. I had AFIB, my heart would start racing up to 180 beats per minute. Doc said caffeine wasn't a cause. But I went off caffeine - not because of AFIB but because I had a frequent urination problem. When I went off caffeine for two weeks I had no AFIB, then one day I decided I need caffeine, as soon as I drank - two ounces my AFIB came back. Apparently after I withdrew from caffiene I was even more responsive to it.
Studies say that caffeine isn't a trigger for AFIB, but it is for me.

Any external food that provides no nourishment but is required for you to function effectively can never be a good thing. The ideal way is to get off caffeine entirely and drink it only for the taste rather than for the hit.

I quit smoking using the On! Pouches and quit coffee with decaf, then one day a few months ago, I just said fuck it, any amount of caffeine already effects me negatively and the On! Pouches just became gross after a year, I just quit both of those the same weekend. I had smoked for 20 years before the pouches, which really worked well. Reading the ingredients to both cigs and the pouches(way “safer”) are just too disturbing to write off forever. Couldn’t easily find any pouches without the fake sweeteners. So after the day I quit I had 3-4 weeks of intermittent migraine style headaches just from decaf and 2mg pouches. What made me really quit the pouches was that I started getting a few headaches which NEVER get, so I quit everything the next day. Haven’t had a headache in a few weeks, knock on wood cuz that shit was pretty intense at times. Now just eat a crapload of things like cilantro to get the heavy metals out of the body a much as possible even though NOTHING beats old fashion sweating. 😅

I drank coffee for 25 years. 2-4 mugs of strong black daily. I ended up with blown adrenal glands, causing intermittent sleep pattern. Also an inflamed stomach and reflux. I stopped, thinking just until my stomach heals, I got headaches for couple of days and couldnt really think straight.
Now i sleep well, my stomach has healed.
I had one cup of coffee on a ski trip recently, it felt incredible at the time, euphoric but hours later i got heart palpitations. I'm not going back.
I realise i make excuses for coffee just like any addict. Drinking it all the time is not good for you. It's a powerful industry and easy to paint a healthy image when that much money is at stake. You can analyse a positive aspect of coffee and ignore the negatives.
Bottom line, you're not meant to be living your life dependent on drugs. You may manage but it will most likely cause problems.

She would brew big clay pots and we would drink it first thing in the morning (also through out the day) and a cup before bed. When I win that battle, I will feel so much better. I don't intend to permit eliminate sugar, but I want to be the authority in the relationship.

I never needed coffee in the morning, but always needed it in the afternoon after lunch. I feel fine from the time I wake up till lunch with no stimulants. But as soon as you start eating (excluding breakfast for some reason it doesn’t have much of a negative affect) - energy crashes and you want to go to sleep and that’s where you need coffee. The solution is to eat one meal a day in the evening after work. When you don’t eat, your energy is always good and stable throughout the day.

The key is moderation. One cup of coffee is pretty healthy (but afair you don't need caffeine for this, so decaf might be best option in general), but drinking 4+ is asking for trouble. And even 1 cup can create dependency, so taking several day breaks from time to time to reset this is useful too. There is also genetic factor - part of population is slow caffeine metabolisers and for them drinking more than 2 cups a day can be simply dangerous in terms of immediate effects - hearts and blood pressure problems and all things related to this.

Interesting take on caffeine but it's very "bourgy" take on history pre-modern era since like 90% of most slaves and workers and servants were not drinking caffeine to do the labour's, nor is it correct to link caffeine to both the enlightenment in 16th century and mideast science revolution in 12th century. There was however the cafe culture of highest elites and intellects where ideas were exchanged, and some anecdotal evidence of huge coffee drinkers like Newton and Voltaire. Still, there are various other factors impacting the proliferation of ideas and booms of productivity that caffeine plays much minor part compared to other factors than as being suggested. Free speech and freedom of and openness to non-religious/scientific/philosophical/literature/arts/history has more to do with the system and rights and education that encourages and promotes different eras of human thought and discovery, as well as the technological tools available such as optics like telescopes and microscopes. Optics, print press, chemicals, food, different paints and arts, metal working, economics, timekeeping, discovery of elements, imperialism and exploration leading to discoveries etc as well as freedom of intellectualism are much more direct causes than caffeine...

Joe acts shocked that people used to give their kids hard cider for breakfast. It’s actually a very recent (like less than 50 years) thing that kids were not allowed to have alcohol at home. I’m 54 and my very strict Catholic parents let my siblings and I have wine with dinner, beer during barbecues, sips of their beers. It really wasn’t considered a big deal at all. We were never allowed coffee. My Mom definitely considered caffeine to be a worse drug than wine or beer.

Caffeine not only interferes with sleep, it gave me horrible acid reflux. It also gave me what felt like heart palpitations, made me first euphoric, then jittery and tense. Finally I started getting the occasional ocular migraine which was absolutely insane. That's when I cut out caffeine completely. Been off it for several years now and I function perfectly well and sleep a lot better.

same, I used to be a fine dinning chef up to 2 Michelin stars on Jersey Island in U.K. and had awful eating habits. My breakfast lunch and dinner was a coffee and cigarette until I get home at 11pm and eat the entire fridge at once. Whoever worked in fast paced quality kitchen knows how hectic, intense and mental these environments are. Used to drink about 6-8 coffees a day EASLY + at least one big Monster a day…
Covid forced me to leave the industry and now I know that without lockdown I would ve been in even deeper💩.
Never ever did any sniff what is a plague in hospitality so I can only imagine how destroyed people are after coke abuse FOR WORK, instead of once a week or month.
I got GERD due to all that ( basically chronic heart burn/acid reflux ), have to take a Lansoprasole medication every day otherwise it a matter of hours and I might drink nothing eat nothing and I still feel a dragon spitting fire in my throat and chest if I do not take my med.
Still not the end of the world, people have much bigger problems and hear much worse news - but really - F caffeine, you don’t need that and when you ACTUALLY NEED IT like I did “because of work” - change the job instead of adjusting habits to it to cope. Your health is much more important that making few more bucks.

I went off caffeine/coffee for 9 months...about 10 years ago, because my cortisol flipped---too much training stress all day as I was a Personal Trainer at the time... and for those of you who don't know what THAT is---it is when you are wide awake at night, and dragging an anchor in the AM, the opposite of what cortisol should do... and honestly after the initial 'shock' --my brain got a calm focus going...I am naturally focused though, but it was more chill and, in a way, good words came to me easier, as I am/was also a writer. Today, I only drink 8 oz in the early morning which is way enough for me... I doubt, unless there is a health concern, ever give it up again. I also have left PT way in the rear view...

I've been caffeine-free for 15 years now, not even chocolate. My fuse was a lot shorter on it, prone to anger and even rage. My sleep was a mess, especially waking up regardless of what time 4AM or 9AM, always difficult and very grumpy thanks to withdrawal until I got my first 'hit' of the day. It's a positive personal lifestyle choice and glad I eventually choose a different path.
