  • Here was the full breakdown to remove the 560SL rear differential and axle shafts. Hope you all enjoy since I didn't see any other these on youtube showing all the steps.
Please understand I am just a hobby mechanic and I figured out how to do this one my own.
The cost of this repair could exceed $4,000 at a shop charging $200 an hour and still not have a nice clean painted rear diff.
Sorry I didnt reassemble everything but this was being taken out to be sold, the install is not that hard with another set of hands!
Hope you all enjoy this was really a lot of work on the cleaning side.

I do remember them, look on Pelican parts they break all the parts down nicely on the website.

Many thanks, tangentially. I just refurbished all this on a 1980 450 SLC. I am having a real issue putting the big bolt back through the rear subframe mount and getting them to screw in to the subframe. I have been at it for days, sadly working on the ground. Have you ever done the rear subframe mounts and got any tip re getting that bolt to screw back in. Many thanks, Markus

Yes, I did the rear subframe mounts but had to use a few center jacks to move the subframe and the frame of the car to line up. Also had to make a type of jig to get the subframe mounts to insert into the car using the weight of the car. I did on a lift so hard to picture done on the ground.

@@butchgarage9482 many thanks for your kind reply. Aside from engine and transmission I have changed everything else rubber/gasket wise and whilst there have been challenges beyond even rain in California, bolting the rear subframe has proven the biggest headache. I have 3 jacks so will have to make it work and will ask for assistance. I was getting to the point where I was thinking “is it really righty tighty or is it lefty tighty!?!?!?”. Glad to know it is a pain in ze Arsch for everyone. Be well
