  • Replacing the rear differential in my Mercedes ML500 w164 2006. Changing the bearings, seals, cleaning and mounting in the car. The old differential was completely destroyed, it was not profitable to repair it, the costs were too high I replaced it for a different one from the Mercedes W251 with a gear ratio of 3.70, the same as in the damaged component at the end of the movie, there is information about part numbers

    Cleaning with paint thinner is better than with brake cleaner. It doesn't evaporate as fast and when rinsed off it leaves a protective film on the parts. That`s also a good way of cleaning valve covers and engines in general.

    Excellent. I have a few questions, if I may. Why does Mercedes does not include differential oil change in their maintenance booklet? At least the booklet that came with my W251 (2012) does not have any reference to it. At what intervals would you recommend replacing the oil? What about transfer case oil? Should I use the same oil you used on this video for both? Thank you for posting this (and some of your other videos).

    Thank you for this great video. I need a bit of advice. The differentials, front, and rear, on the
    Mercedes ML and R Class are non-serviceable. Or should I say, Mercedes
    tells you that I do not provide torque spec for it. So how low pre-load
    torque would be safe? Since a too high pre-load can be very bad.

    • @mymercrepairs1097

      It was the third Merc Sprinter in the country and no one had an idea of it till 2000's and then it was too late.

    • @mymercrepairs1097
      @mymercrepairs1097  3 роки тому

      @@SweetyVoltyy Hmmm. I admit it's an interesting case. Most often, in the case of the drive on the rear axle, the shaft support is to blame, but in this case I doubt it would be a problem because the damaged support would not last for so many years. In my opinion, the rear differential will be to blame, one of the bearings is damaged, I think it may be the input bearing. Start by changing the oil in the differential, pay attention to its color, take pictures of the oil and send it so that I can also assess the condition of the old oil.
      If the noise increases after replacement, it is 100% to blame for the problem with the differential

    Woah, so you're saying the carrier bearings in the rear diff are the same as the ones in the front diff?
    What the heck? Were the bearings you removed KLM and you replaced them with LM?
    The front diff is notorious for failing with the same KLM503349/KLM503311 bearing, the rear is not usually an issue.
    The KLM503349 is made in Poland and seems to fail frequently in the front.
    Could the increased oil capacity of the rear diff be helping?
    I never heard of the rear using the same bearings. You didn't make a typo or anything, did you? Just askin'. :-)
    What about the pinion? What are part numbers? And yes, per the dealer and lube info supplied from MB, diff is supposed to have GL5 gear oil, not tranny fluid. Transfer case does call for ATF134.
    And btw, nice video! Thanks for taking the time.

    • @mymercrepairs1097
      @mymercrepairs1097  3 роки тому +3

      In the 11: 06s video I showed the original bearing numbers that were in the rear differential. I used Timken bearings numbered KLM503311 KLM503349 it is the same bearing
      www.iparts.pl/czesc/timken-klm503349klm503311-timken-klm503349klm503311,0-219-klm503349klm503311-0.html
      Dimensions are important
      After the change, they work flawlessly so far :)
      The oil I used is 75w85 as recommended by Mercedes but a lot depends on the climate in which the vehicle is used. countries with hot climate better use 80w140 cold countries 75w85 countries with moderate climate 75w90. ( I changed the oil in my Mercedes to 75w90 ).
      It is true that the rear differential breaks less often and the front differential is more problematic. For me, the damage was a consequence of the stupidity of the previous owner who drove hard despite the problems with Lock UP and destroyed almost the entire drive in the car :(
      Regular servicing and oil change is also important Polish bearings are not the cause of the problem, in my opinion, they are simply too small for the loads they carry, especially on the front axle of the vehicle, it is a design error or intentional operation of the Mercedes :-/ The front differential has a slightly design other structures than the rear one which may have an impact on the worse lubrication in bends. It is also affected by other momentary forces during driving, the load is primarily on the rear axle and the front axle is temporarily loaded, often very quickly when the rear loses its grip, which is not good for the bearing strength.
      The oil in the central differential depends on the type, it is different in the version with the off road package and different in the ordinary transfer case
      But the truth is that everyone will be better than the old, never replaced factory oil :(

      If your differential died after changing the oil, it means that its condition was already very bad fresh clean oil only showed his condition and did not affect its destruction, changing to 75w140 can help because it is very thick when warmed up and masks the noise of the bearings but it causes an increase in fuel consumption
