  • I was using the EOS R5 C camera recently at a demo and it occurred to me how good this will be, but what about the battery life. I was then thinking wouldn't be good for when I'm filming conference or live streaming for the EOS R5 too and I could use the Ninja V. The R5 C doesn't have the 30 minute limit. So I started with the cage for the camera and started adding things including a power bank that gives me 12.5 times the battery capacity. Oh yeah, more power.

Thanks very much for this clear and highly informative video.I've just ordered a power bank of my own to test this setup with my EOS R5. A key point worth emphasizing is that the USB-C PD needs to support at least 9V/3A and 5V/3A (in my case, from a 45W power bank). I also use a (SmallRig) camera cage but I'm planning to hang the power bank from a hook on the tripod to enhance stability. BTW, it's important to use a good USB-C to USB-C cable that supports Power Delivery (like the one supplied with the R5). I picked up a rather expensive Thunderbolt 4 cable which also supports very high speed data transfers (limited to 10 Gbps (USB 3.1 Gen 2) for the R5).
FYI, the Vivitar Creator Series HDMI to USB Video Capture Card is a low cost HDMI capture device which accepts up to UHD resolution and outputs 1080p over USB. I was even able to record to an Android device with an app called “USB Camera (Standard)”.

True. Also important to ensure that the USB cable is supported at the camera, as the camera 's USB port can be subject to stress (and possible damage) otherwise...

Well damn I Bought a "Anker PowerCore Essential 20000 PD USB C Portable Charger (18W)" for my Canon R6, I cannot use it as a external power source even though it has a USB-C PD port, guys when buying a Powerbank make sure the minimum Watts is 30W, anything less then 30W you will not be able to use the power bank as an external power source and the battery icon will not grey out, as you can see in my case my powerbank is 18W and wont be enough to power my Canon R6, although I can still use it to charge my batteries, its not enough juice to run my Canon R6 of the 18W powerbank.

Great video, thank you! Just again was wanting to ensure the 3A output so that it works with my R5. Was tempted to do a longer timelapse and while I could swap LP-E6N and other batteries, I figure this would help out (and could also serve as emergency power I suppose if away on a trip for some time).

Quick question: is there a solution to power Ninja V + R5 via the same USBC/Battery Bank? Thanks much, trying to streamline my kit, and no doubt the canons chew thru batteries esp when shooting C-LOG3.

That would be nice and than k you for the compliment. I think I need to make more videos, including one about this great question you have asked. You’ll be please to know I tested this with two v lock batteries I have that have D-tap for the Ninja V and USB-C for the R5. Both of these batteries are great and have displays showing battery capacity. The Moman 99 Pro shows how much left is time. The great thing about the R5 is when the camera is off the internal batter will charge from these external batteries.
The Moman 99 Pro is amzn.to/3OmM2Xl
The FXLion Nano One is amzn.to/459zoCh, there are higher capacity Nano Two and Nano Three.
You’ll need a D-tap cable if you haven’t got one for connect the Ninja V, this one has a locking barrel, amzn.to/3DLeEod
If you like the v lock option, and it powers so many things you might just need some rails from Smallrig or someone like that. I used this to clamp on to tripod, amzn.to/45xKXmz
These are all on the Amazon UK site but might take you to Amazon in your country if you have it. You can always shop elsewhere, this is where I got them. But these links are a starting point.
I don’t think C-Log 3 itself uses more battery power or much more but raw certainly will.
By the way, I use these batteries for my Rotolights too. They are so versatile. And I believe will also power a MacBook or at least charge it and apparently they are flight safe if you take as carry on luggage.
Hope that helps and thanks for a great question and your support.

Thank you for sharing this video, was looking for a power solution for out in the field for my R5. Unfortunately Amazon won't ship the Anker Powercore+ to California. Not sure why as I see it carried here at the retail store Best Buy here in California. That being said, I did email Anker and they checked with their engineers and told me that this bank wouldn't work for that purpose with my Canon R5. Probably just protecting themselves from liability as you and others have shown that this type of setup will work as long as the PD has at least 30W are present. I ended up ordering a different brand of PD from Amazon and it arrived yesterday. Will try it out this week.
One suggestion I would make for your setup regarding securing the cables. I purchased both the Smallrig HDMI adapter, as well as the Smallrig HDMI & USB-C cable Clamp. I could not get these two Smallrig attachments to work together, the rubber surrounding Micro-HDMI side of the Adapter was too thick to fit inside the cable clamp. I made the mistake of removing the Clamp, and using only the HDMI adapter. First trip in the field I damaged the cord, and my external monitor would not receive the signal. Luckily it appears that the Micro-HDMI port on the R5 seems to be working fine with other cables. I now only use the Cable Clamp, as protecting my camera's port was more important to me than the convenience of using the HDMI adapter. Hopefully in the future Smallrig modifies the size of the rubber surrounding the Micro-HDMI side of their HDMI cable so the Clamp can be used together.
Thanks again for sharing this information.

That’s odd. Even people I know at Canon say they use the Anker Powercore. I think there is a different model for the US. However, let me know how you get on with the other brand. I also power using my MacBook Pro USB-C charger.
Thanks for the tip about the cable clamp.
Hope you’re enjoying the R5 as much as I am.

Thank you for this informative video. I tried using an Anker power bank to recharge the batteries on my R5 with the two battery grip attached in a remote location. However, it would only charge one of the two LPE6NH batteries and not switch to the other battery. I could switch their positions and charge the other. One time I did get it to switch which battery it was charging but it never switches on its own to charge both. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

🎉your Ninja V monitor would run out of power many hours before the camera since you say you have 12x camera power but only one small np-f battery on the Ninja.
    Doesn't make sense.
A V-mount battery to power both Ninja and camera makes more sense.

The battery doesn't charge when it is on but but it is powered by external source. The battery level indicator will be grey when powered. No. But it works the same that way as the R5. I have tried on an EOS R and that worked too. Remember this doesn't work on the older LP-E6 batteries.

Do you mean to power the Ronin or the camera on the gimbal. If the camera my guess is it would add too much weight and if mounted on the top like I've done it could be top heavy.
