This technique is awesome! I had been working on a picked rhythm of downstroke, triplet-triplet, downstroke, triplet-triplet-triplet for over a year off and on building up speed. After 4 hours of thumping practice, i can match my speed only thumping! stoked how quickly this took :) thanks for the video!
I just love every content that makes me step out of my comfort zone, even if this is way too hard for me ATM, but hey... The first strumming those first open chords were hard at the beginning too, so yea... Nice video Hugo ✌️😎
I started learning this technique and ran into your video. Really satisfying to see your progress and confirm it is possible for mortals like us XD Thanks, Hugo!
It definitely helped to have played some classical/fingerstyle in the past. If you set a bit of time aside every day, I feel it's a very achievable technique within a reasonable amount of time!
@@HugoMoroux I’ve gotten decent at it, but I still have a ways to go before I can say I’m good at it. I’ve been working on it for about two weeks now, and can do some pretty cool thumping, but I still have some work to do with regards to doing big note groupings on one string. It’s a process though, and I’m making good progress every day. I didn’t do much finger picking before learning to thump, but I’ve been doing it a lot as of recently. I love it! Thumping opened a whole world of possibilities with my playing, and I love watching other people do it, because these videos show me different aspects of the technique that I might not notice on my own.
Appreciate your practise approach👌🏼. Regarding modern guitar: I argue that ‘thumping’ is actually an ancient technique used initially with finger plucked instruments. The bass players seem to have borrowed the thumb technique from Flamenco Guitar (Southern Spain the origin). It’s an essential technique study to play Flamenco. The technique is called ‘Alzapúa’. It has multiple variations. Please find this English spoken video; ua-cam.com/video/Lso57dNBRI0/v-deo.html
@@HugoMoroux it needs to be considered. It doesn’t get mentioned enough. That observation and discussion probably doesn’t make a difference to some guitar players. But in educational situations it can add value. It pays to study different styles of guitar music or just different styles of music. I agree with many that it can enhance learning, development, creativity and performance. As it did for the Wooten brothers and Tosin. Thanks for sharing too. I’ll try to keep up. We are all learning 🧡
Alive and well, making an album, teaching, and working on content when time permits. I hope to get more going on this UA-cam channel in the near future! Thank you for asking
You can learn this in less then 24 hours easily , practising in half an hour to every hour intervals for 10 minutes at a time to avoid aches and pains Everytime u do it your better then last time
I love how methodically you broke everything down. Well done sir
Thank you kindly, good sir! 🙏
Taking this video as inspiration and starting point to work on my guitar technique again
That's awesome, you can do it!

Only a matter of time till you're thumping away, step by step. 🐰
Glad to see you're still pushing hard! This looked like a lot of fun to learn.
Can recommend, always fun to learn new things

Haha, keep it up, and you might become a thump god yourself. Thanks for watching!
This is really cool, and I love the piece you ended up writing! I'd love to see a "Learning hybrid picking in 7 days" vid
Thank you Adarsh, that'd be a fun idea
I’m impressed that you got the gist of it so quickly! Good job!

What 7-, or even 30-day, experiment would you like me to try next?
Eating bananas :-p

Polyrhythm
Cory Wong style clickety clackety even motion picking, with that big funkness.
clawhammer style picking, it's primarily used on banjo but I wonder how it'd sound on guitar
Ahhhhhh Hugo! I LOVE it! Yesssssss!!
Thanks so much, Abi!
so much wisdom in one video! I am not a fan of the technique, but I do like listening to your reflections!
Thanks Newton, I'm glad it inspired you in other ways 😄
wow! that 8 min flew by so quick. Idk why this is only 2,800 views... should be like 300k views!
Hahah, thank you, glad you found it entertaining!
Great video Hugo. Love every step and breakdown. Thank you
Thanks Darnell, hope you give it a try!

Haha, maybe one day. Tell your friends! 😸

Thank you, appreciate you! 🙏
I tried Thumping this week and got a blister on my thumb on the first day. Now I'm waiting until it's healed xD
Definitely let it heal first, and then pick it up back up once your thumb is ready. You've got this!
Thanks for this video. Very good. And inspiring conclusion
My pleasure, have fun above all else!

Those practice routines are from exactly from Tosin's Instructional DVD "THUMP!" right?
Yes, some of them are (not all exercises were shown in this video). It's a good resource if you're looking to learn the technique
Just wondering where are you now what happened?
Alive and well, making an album, teaching, and working on content when time permits. I hope to get more going on this UA-cam channel in the near future! Thank you for asking
Tosin collab when? :)
I'll keep an eye on my phone. 👁
Great work! I love your youtube videos
Thank you very much, I hope it gave you some ideas
Beautiful.. have you tried the technique on your strat too..?
Yes, I find it sounds especially great on single coils
Hi great channel here love it compliments 🙂🎵
Thank you so much, more coming soon! ❤️
Is there a need to mute strings with my *right palm?
Your other fingers will mute the string during the sequence, or you can mute with your left hand if it's a pattern across multiple strings

Would you rather your partner say "Ew gross fingernails" or "Ew lackluster tone"? Easy answer.
Spot on, Jon
No you didn't.
You're very encouraging, I would love to see your attempt
