To anyone just starting this technique be patient. For me it was like learning a brand new instrument. What helped it all click was realizing the thump with the thumb isn’t so much “slapping” the string as it is functioning as a pick. So mentally imagining going up down with a pick has been very helpful, as is taking it sloooow. Cheers Ray, great video!
I figured out this technique like 3 years ago on accident playing classical acoustic. I kept accidentally getting an extra note at the exact same spot consistently so I figured out what what making the extra note and practiced it until it became extremely natural. Been playing bass now for my band for about the last year or so and this technique translates extremely well.
So glad you made this video. I was so confused about how you could get this sound when it looked like you were barely moving your hand. Very cool, adds a neat dynamic to your playing.
Sounds awesome. I actually think it makes so much more sense to use threes instead of fours. The fours sound cool but just seem less fluid and unnatural to play than threes. I prefer the version you do sound wise too. Dude, if I may ask, do you have a “hitchhiker’s thumb” like me? I never noticed until now, but it appears you have one. Make your thumb joint straight - you have it if the top part of your thumb points backwards. If you do have it, I’m curious if you usually hold your pick more towards the joint where the finger pad is a bit straighter. That’s what I tend to do, but my joint sometimes gets irritated feeling after playing hard. I’ve tried to see if bending my thumb to let me grip it dead center on the fleshy pad part would help, but it just seems awkward and I can’t hold the pick quite as firmly. I think it could make for a different video and get people thinking about the most optimal way to grip picks of all kinds, even if they don’t likely have this weird thumb thing. 😂 If you do have hitchhiker’s thumb like me, welcome to the exclusive thumb club - only 5% of people in the world are born with this phenomenon! I wonder how many guitar players that equates to, lol. 🤔😂 Later, and many thanks! 🙏🏻✌🏻🤘🏻🎸
I used to slap my guitar strings like a bass sometimes but I kept breaking my strings at the bridge. I really like the percussive sound though, especially on an acoustic.
As someone who started on bass, and now mainly a guitar player I finding myself trying to incorporate as much percussive elements as possible in my guitar writing.
I could see where you end up creating a style or genre where you use the thumping to go along with the kicks and layer your melody between bass, baritone, and regular guitar.
thank u i saw u for the first time last night on a seven string video i think the one your using in this and i heard both that and your left hand squweelys and tried to figure it out straight away and all of today. i think i sort of figured out the squweelys i just reached over and pressed the lowest string down to the pickup pole but it still needs perfecting. from what ive seen of you so far you playing is extremely unique and original and i love it its exactly what i want in my playing and even just yesterday started writing riffs with your playing stuck in my head and that squweeling sound. i love what your doing so keep it up also side note do you have any pointers on tone and distortion i assume a very heavy distortion but not too sure i git differing results with i higher and lower tone and right now im using a jackson dinky seven string and is very muddy so i think it would work good once i start practising like this and get better
You gotta learn the coin behind the ear trick where you hold the pick (coin) between your knuckles when your not using it I used to do it when I was playing bass cause I would switch back an forth
Sounds sick man! I will say as both a bass player and guitar player, the bass world has been doing this sort of thing for decades. I started on bass and then started learning guitar so always love seeing techniques crossover.
I just uploaded a thumping vid on 9 string check it out if you want. You can also get 4 note hits by doing a double hit with your thumb. And there's a couple different things you can add as well but I'm not quite there yet
This guy isn’t just a good guitar player he’s a good UA-camr!!! I love the fact that I thought damn that’s a cool trick and boom click on your channel and boom UA-cam video tutorial three days later I’m impressed I’m proud respect 🫡
I've been enjoying *Tosin Abasi's thumping technique for years.
It is not a new thumping technique. Just a specific pattern of three notes played with the common Abasi thumping technique.
Wooten, Abasi..
you sealed your fate, you got to cover The Woven Web by Animals as Leaders
Hahah in time!

Yeah when I was getting into thumping I was trying it like it was slap bass, but that’s not it at all lol
YOUR guitar technique?

Bro i was legit yesterday thinking "hmm where could i find a tutorial for this cool technique" and boom! Thanks dude!

Thanks to you for making this video!😊

I've been learning this technique on bass for a while.
Might not apply to guitar, but having a lighter gauge string on bass really helped

Tripplets... My favorite as a drummer 💯

Funny that you post this today because just last night i was trying to do this after seeing your video yesterday with this guitar. Perfect timing 🤘
I thought of the beginning drum fill for Incubus' "Are You In?" when you did that
I love this. I’m a drummer and percussive things like this on guitar really appeal to me. I’ll definitely be practicing this. 😈

Hey I appreciate you commenting! I’m looking forward to our lesson next week!
Yesss my man, I shall not watch anything else until I master this. Appreciate it dude 🤘

Very cool! And well explained. Thank you very much, Sir!
Thanks man. I appreciate the help
Awesome dude, I really digged what you did with that technique in the cerberus demo

Can you review the Harley Benton 4x12 cabinet please ?
Did you consider mixing some slap bass technic into your playing?
Killer stuff yo!
Cheers from Texas!
🤟😺🤟
That is such a cool technique bro. Wow

THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS
I just uploaded a thumping vid on 9 string check it out if you want. You can also get 4 note hits by doing a double hit with your thumb. And there's a couple different things you can add as well but I'm not quite there yet
Very creative! 👍🏾
Sweet technique dude!
thanks so much!
That technique is so creative and cool, bro. Wow. I'm amazed at the new feels and textures it's allowed you to produce in your music.
You should add in your middle finger on the next string down and you can get 4 notes going
will do!
@@xanderraymondcharles I learned this on bass it's pretty sick. Awesome video as usual bro
I watch this video regularly and 2 months later i can almost do it slow 😂😂😂
1:31 those are called triplets
Go birds
"my"
Thumpy thumb
It's kind of a reach to call this "your" thumping technique.
He never said he created it. More like it's his way of thumping and it's his kind of style of thumping.
This guy isn’t just a good guitar player he’s a good UA-camr!!!
