I believe the friend that taught him was Evan Brewer, who he played with in Animosity before Evan ended up in the Faceless and later Entheos with drummer Navene Koperweis, who drummed for Animals as Leaders before Matt. Another fun fact: Evan was trained by the legendary Wooten brothers.
Some dude said exactly what he said about how he was practicing it for months and just couldn’t get it down and then bam, he started doing it like he’s been doing it for years
that’s how it was for me. i usually pick things up pretty quickly and since i’m a drummer and it’s so rhythmic i thought i’d get it down in a couple days, took a few weeks, was frustrated for a bit but now it’s like what i just naturally do on the guitar i’m now it’s like a fidget tool now lol
Great video. I tried playing his technique just bow and ended up slapping the string here and there, haha. I am, too, curious how he played with his thumb. Thanks Matt for this informative video, 😀
Looks like I'm not getting notifications from your channel anymore. Found this one by mistake and added it to my watch later list. I'll catch up with the missed videos within the next days, hopefully.
@@Moakalatte Just finished watching it now and that's an awesome technique indeed! I've always had a hard time with slapping of any kind, whether it's on the guitar or on the bass. Anyway, have you tried this percussive thingy yourself? :)
@@mikeKidLazy I have not properly tried this technique. I'm intrigued to try it more but I just need to actually practise it for long enough for it to become musical and useful!
13 fucking comments on this? seriously? side note if anyone could link me to a video where this technique is show better visually of the hand that would be great. (takes sip of coffee)
just use your thumb as a pick duh 🙄 that's the way one of the pioneers (or maybe the inventor) of this technique - Victor Wooten - teaches it. My man wants to look good I guess and tries to overcomplicate it. lame. 😕
meanwhile you're oversimplifying it. The fuck is the point of an "in-depth" explaination then when you leave a demonstration sesh for merely a minute of the audience's time? I don't think its necessary to teach a usually unheard of percussive technique whilst having to credit and c0ckride victor wooten who or whatnot
Man just play bleed with 2 finger
😂
I thought exactly the same haha he's a monster
Not only a great player but a really good teacher.

Lute, too, particularly the 10 course baroque lute, is great for finger working. All repertoire is in tab from then, too.
You are blessed brother Tosin.
Thank you very much.
4:03 Yeah Tosin, let me go learn some classical guitar. I'll be back in 5 years...and i'll still suck!
Learn La Catedral - Allegro Solemne, it will help a lot
I LOVE YOU TOSIN
This is definitely the same technique as most modern slap bass players use. Cool to know what kind of tone he's using though.
"Is that a new delay pedal"
"No.. Just using a thumb"
😮
He was like, "Okay, let's play Bleed using my thumping technique 👎👍👎👍"

Yes, it is very interesting. I feel like I could spend weeks working on this and only achieve a sore thumb! 😂 I hope you're doing well mate.
@@Moakalatte 😂👍 Thanks for asking, Matt. I am doing just fine. Hope you are doing well, too 😉
@@Nhask666 I’m doing good bro and really happy to hear that you are too 😃
@@Moakalatte Glad to hear that 🙂
@@Moakalatte I practised it a little bit the other day... I managed to get it to sound good for like 2 secs and can't do it again haha

Well that's frustrating. It's all good, there's plenty of time 😃 Hope you enjoy this, its such a cool technique!

Bro you're reading too much into it
He doesn’t just use his thumb though did you even watch?
*Me disappointedly looking at my non-existent thumbnail after an accident I had with a huge dresser* 🥲
