  • UPDATED VERSION: • Is Halation Better in ...
    So I made a video about Film Halation a while ago and it's been doing pretty well so far. But some of you guys pointed out that I got the term wrong and used "halation" instead of "bloom". lol, rip.
    But since the video has gotten more popular than I thought it would, I want to make sure that the information I'm giving you guys is accurate. That's why I'm making this new tutorial, which will teach you about the difference between Film Bloom and Film Halation. Plus, I'll also show you how to combine both effects to get that sweet 16 or 35-mm film look.
    I just want to make things clear. This channel is not just a place where I throw my knowledge at you. It's also a cool spot where we can talk and exchange ideas. I'm not perfect, but I do my best to know my stuff when it comes to films. I think my insights are pretty helpful, and I'll keep giving you accurate info. Your ideas matter too, they help me grow and do better.
    Thanks for watching, and if you've made it this far, I appreciate your time!
    If you could leave a comment saying "Wow Trent, this was so cool and helpful, you should definitely teach us more about the film look," it would mean a lot. (Just copy and paste that comment, no need to get fancy.)

      firm believer that are "better" ways to do something than others, but no one out there has the "best" way. Its all opinion, and at the end of the day, regardless if someones method is technically "better", we will always end up doing what we believe to be best. Hope this helped you. thanks for watching.

    • @Trentorials

    • @Trentorials
      @Trentorials  3 місяці тому +1

      It’s just a bar letting you know that that section of the footage is not pre rendered, therefore it is not encoded or ready to be played back smoothly. At least, that’s my take on it. Just hit the enter or return key and wait for the pre-render to finish

  • @_skrumcious_
    @_skrumcious_ 6 місяців тому +1

    I liked this tutorial alot but I like adjjustment layers better than layering duplicate clips. theres many clips in my project so using this method i'd have to duplicate all of them and add those effects to the top ones. Im trying it with a second adjustment layer now but it doesn't work haha it just makes everything dark. How would you approach this?

    • @Trentorials
      @Trentorials  6 місяців тому +4

      My advice is clean up your timeline and use subsequences when possible to make it simpler. But it’s done n a duplicate and not an adjustment because the luma key needs to grab info from the clip itself. So it has to be done this way from the knowledge I can share.

    Fire tutorial! The only thing I'm wondering is, why do you need to duplicate the clips instead of just adding the adjustment layer over the top?

    • @Trentorials
      @Trentorials  4 місяці тому

      This is because the duplicate affects the bottom layer. If you turn off the bottom layer, you’ll see what the top layer looks like it you just threw the effects on the clip (it should be blurry and washed out)

  • @_skrumcious_

    Hey i'm working on a night shot with lots of street lamps visible in the distance, i've noticed that the channel blur adjustment layer removes the bloom effect almost completely (even without the red channel being altered, the effect itself removes the majority of the bloom. In your video when you turned your halation adjustment layer back one there wasn't any visible difference to your bloom that i noticed, wondering if you know why this is?

    • @Trentorials
      @Trentorials  6 місяців тому

      If I had to guess, you might have your blending mode wrong-- maybe you hit multiply or something... not sure. but channel blur set to red on an adjustment layer, and bloom effects *(Luma key and gaussian blur) below that, but duplicated from the original clip on top of the original. make sure the blend mode there is set to normal

  • @tarektedjani9992

    • @Trentorials
      @Trentorials  6 місяців тому

      Color grading is not the same as a video effect we add like halation. It’s not necessary but it helps to stylize your footage to match the bloom and halated look

    • @Trentorials
      @Trentorials  6 місяців тому +1

      It could be the codec you filmed it, but it could be your premiere pro preferences, go to premiere in the top left of the screen, and hit preferences then go to memory to see what memory you allow premiere to access.
      If not that, watch your work back at 1/4 or 1/8 resolution. That should do it. And if that really doesn’t help, proxy your footage first.

      I find duplicating the effect lets the luma key do what it does best.
      Which would be masking out the alpha channel (whites) and selecting only those. If it was on an adjustment layer, it would not be able to select the same way. Thus needing to duplicate.

      There's another way that's DRAMATICALLY faster and does a pretty good approximation of hallation. Add adjust layer. Go to Curves and pull the green and blue lines completely down so only red remains. Set blend mode to Lighten and dial the opacity to taste. Zero render time since it's just messing with curves and opacity. If you need more hallation than this gives you, you're probably using too much hallation. It's supposed to be subtle.
