The Rocky Hill Tank: Iwagumi w/ Vietnamese Minnows (Planted Tank Aquascape Tutorial)

To make no filter tanks work, I usually use a lot of stem plants and this uses nutrients and creates oxygen in the water...but for this tank, I'm using no stem plants. Most "rock only" (Iwagumi) scapes stick to more carpeting plants and that's what I've tried to create in this one....but to make sure we get the tank cycling, I will be using a lot of the carpeting plants and also lots of water changes. This is much harder than using a lot of stem plants which typically start absorbing nutrients very fast. I'll need to be on top of water testing but with the help of beneficially bacteria, everything will be fine 😊

Sometimes I think it's so easy to get wrapped up in the idea of "more, more, more" - this set up is stunning and a really necessary reminder that something can be absolutely lovely with (in this case, deceptive) simplicity. Have been binge-watching your videos, new and old, since discovering your channel a few weeks ago. Thank you for always educational content with a sprinkle of humor. Love this new fish, never heard of them before, but where did all the shrimps go?? In some shots, they are pro hiding and none are visible.

Love it, MD. Really looking forward to updates on this scape. Brand new aquasoil that’s uncapped always loaded the water column with nutrients the first few months but maybe with your fish in cycle water change regimen, it won’t be as bad.
With the slow growing plants I feel like floating plants are going to be key to helping this tank achieve balance.
Look forward to seeing this scape mature. I really like these minnows!

If i could make one complaint its that the finished tank is too often shown in the thumbnail and at the start of the video. I like the journey to the end result, rather than spoilers. Kind of feel cheater sometimes.

Suggestion....an all black bath towel laid over the work table when planting. Still a firm surface for working on but way better looking on camera. 6 us dollars ....totally worth it.

I would love to see u tackle a big tank for big fish like predatory fish....arowanas, red tail catfish, stuff like that that would be very cool
Those red cherry shrimp pop so much in this scape! Hopefully they thrive in this tank as opposed to the other ecosystem tank with the betta lol

An amazing tank. What a colours, design and even stone marble surfaces looking beautiful. I would like to see this tank couple of months later when plants grown.
Good to know that black metal shelf holds all that rock weight. i’m using one right now for a pond bucket, 4 10 gallons, 2 5 gallons, a 16 tall , 2 2.5 gallons and 2 .5 gallons plus pots with pretty plants i’m rooting from cuttings for scapes. Hopefully the rocks are heavier but it looks amazing with all the scape materials you have!

MD, I would like to suggest to you the creation of themed tanks.
You could start with Harry Potter (I'm a big fan), putting frogs, fish, snakes, etc. I saw some hardscape with foams or something like that. In harry potter and the goblet of fire there is a lake that can serve as inspiration.

I'm in Vietnam and I can say your tank is so beautiful, but I never see that fish before 😅. You know neon king fish, it's very colorful fish, these color red and blue will be a nice choice for you green tank.

Cool tank 👍 for a future build you really should look into doing a tank for a Killifish species such as the Lyretail Killifish . The colours on those fish are really nice and would completely suit your tanks .

I'd either experiment with painting the skimmer white or place it behind the hair grass. Looks fantastic, but the gray skimmer diminishes the perfection. I've never seen a white skimmer, probably for good reason, but would be interesting.
