- Black Eyed Peas Fritters are (Akara) a very delicious, vegetarian friendly meal eaten in most parts of Africa. Though it's origin is from the yoruba tribe of Nigeria but somehow it has found it's way to the hearts of other African countries and even beyond.
I have a video on how I peel my Beans (Black Eyed peas) on this link • How to Make Moin Moin ...
Here are some popular names for this meal - Acaraje, Kosai or Kosai, Black eyed pea fritters, Koose.
Ingredients
2 Cups of dry black eyed peas
1 Habanero
1/4 Cup of Red bell pepper
1 small sized Onion
1 Stock cube
2 to 3 tbs of Water
Vegetable Oil (Enough for deep frying)

In Brazil we have acarajé. We fry in Palm oil, cut in half, and add baby shrimp, cashew paste, okra and cilantro. I am proud of our Nigerian Heritage. I will try your recipe. Thank you. ❤️
You are welcome +VICO 2015. I was quite 'pleasantly' surprised when I got to know that a couple of months ago. I was really amazed to discover that the food we eat in Nigeria has traveled that much miles. Some Nigerians still prefer to fry their Akara in palm oil as well. Let me know how it turns out whenever you try it.
Well I let you know that in the Carribean, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Trinidad and Haiti (I don't know about the other countries), we make AKARA as well, but it is called AKRA. I guess that we lost the original name with time because of slavery, as we didn't speak our native languages anymore. However, we do it with FLOUR and WATER, and this I guess it is because we did not have acces to black eyed peas, so we tried to reproduce the original AKARA. In Martinique, Guadeloupe and Trinidad they call it AKRA, but in Haiti, we call it MARINADE. In Haiti, what we call AKRA, is actually MALANGA (TARO) that is grated and fried in oil.
Thank you so much for this simple yet very explanatory videos! My husband is Nigerian and was pleasantly surprised when I brought theses to the table this afternoon! 😉😉👍🏽
Good! You are welcome dear. I'm happy you got it right and that your husband loved it. Thanks for the feedback!!. :)
Afropatluck, tried these bean balls for the first time in Nigeria. I am Black American and was in 9ja for the first time. As we were headed to a village we stopped and picked up this ball of beans. It was so good. I have been wondering how it is made. Thanks a bunch! We have been missing out on a lot of good African dishes in US. Use healthy oils when frying and it will not be too bad on the arteries..........
Yea healthy Oils... very important. Thanks for chipping that in....I hope you enjoyed you stay inn Nigeria?

OMG it's a very popular food here where I live in Bahia, Brazil! We call it Acarajé, it's fried in a palm oil called dendê and filled with vatapá and caruru. I love it!
ivory Coast(cote dívoire) and Nigeria, we have the same food... in french we call it ''beignets d'haricot''. i am just homesick when I watch your videos auntie Lola. thank youu

I love Akara and this recipe❤️
very nice akara am going to try it
I made this today and the whisking made it very different. Love it. Will try the whisking with moi moi. Thank you Chef Lola!!
+Chioma Eduzor Great, I'm glad you like it... Whisking the moi moi will make no difference in the final outcome because it has a more liquid content in it unlike Akara it's more dense so you need to whisk a little bit to make it more airy.
thanks chef Lola your recipes are always on point ☺
Aww.....thanks dear.

I made the akara, it taste so delicious but it didn't come out as beautiful as yours. Thanks my mentor
Aww...I'm so happy to hear this. Don't worry by the time you make a couple of times it will be better than mine...but for now, I'm applauding your effort. Well done!
Please Lola what's the make/model of this blender, I have been looking for a good blender that can blend stuffs like beans. Please I will appreciate if you recommend
thanks alot
+Tigho Asalasa You are welcome dear. 😉
Maggi is optional, coz I don't use maggi but I use only salt.
What blender did u used please chef? for purchase
OMG....what a simple recipe. I just bought some black eye pea flour...this should work with that, no?
+Lovin Spirit Yes. It will work. :)
Thank you Lola.
well done :), is it possible to make akara without frying it?
Thanks Jennifer, I have seen a couple Nigerian food blogger come up with the pan fry method (using a very little amount of Oil like with making pan cakes) but I'm yet to explore that.
I think I will try this by baking. It's so nice to see how vegetarian/vegan friendly African cuisine can be.
Em que tipo de óleo eu frito esses bolinhos ?
AFRIKAA BUGAA!!!
I have previously boiled beans. Do you think if I used a high speed blender and blended it with water etc just like you did it would work?
No, it’s not going to work. You need raw beans.
What kind of blender did you use pls
Where did you get the stick you used to turn theAkara?
Is it medium heat or maximum?
Please where can i purchase d ice cream scoop?
I love all your teachings pls whenever I make Akara it's always turning into crumbs as soon as I put it on fire. Pls why n Wat is d way out
+Olajumoke Oguchienti I'm guessing your batter is too thin (The Beans needs very little water while blending) and try not to fry in an extremely hot oil. I hope that helps.
Tnk a lot
Lola, please when ever I fry chin chin the oil always outflows the pot. Someone told me its so much butter but I tried reducing the butter but it's still the same.
+ngoasong emeka Try using another brand of vegetable Oil.
gud dy, pls hw do I gt d cream for d ice cream. tnx
+adewusi adetutu Check shoprite, park n shop or any other big supermarket.
how do you prepare the black eyed peas, and how do you peel them?
Hi funkyblanket15 check out this link ua-cam.com/video/UIHM-gqb0zc/v-deo.html there is a detailed process of how I peel my Beans in the video.
Which stock cube should i use?
+katsan88 You can use any one you like.... I like chicken cubes.
What is habanero? Can I leave it out or use something else? Plz reply.
Kemi Bashir Habanero is the same as scotch Bonnet or Ata Rodo. It's a very hot pepper and off course you can leave it out if you don't want it. :)
in the carribean we call it accra , we usually make it with salt fish
Great! That is so good to know. I never knew Akara is also eaten in the Carribean.
we can also make it with taro or pumpkin or plantain it's delicious but i m very happy to try it with beans (sorry for English)
Do I boil the beans first?
No dear, you don't have to.
It's a veggie version of fish cakes
Yea, kind of, I actually really never thought of that.
Can we add the hot green chilies instead of that red chilly ?
Yes you can.
Please you jumped a step for first timers. You did not tell them how to get the beans cleaned out before going to grinding. Thanks keep the good work.
+Milo Savage You are welcome dear, I have included a clickable link to that in the video and also in the description box.
For sure it's best when hot thanks for the video
You are welcome Emmanuel. Hot Akara is the best 👍.
The cube and salt are pretty much the same
my name is akara
+Akara Walker LOL...you really need to try this recipe then... =D
Why using cube knowing that's poison for us
Are you aware that there are vegan seasoning cubes?
Chef Lola's Kitchen - Afropotluck you shoud ne more precise about the cube
I will do when the time comes.... but don't you think it will be nice if you help spread the word by uploading your own videos?
