  • Here's a great sounding recording of "Donna Lee" from Jaco's first 1986 tour with guitar prodigy Bireli Lagrene. Drummer Thomas Böröcz completes the trio. Jaco is on top of his game and takes two(!) solos. First after Bireli's solo and then a short one chorus solo after the drum solo. I believe this was the first concert of the tour. It's safe to say that the trio got off to a flying start with this electrifying performance! :) The concert place on March the 4th in 1986 in Bolzano, Italy.

This is a very underrated period among Jaco fans. I'm a big fan of the San Mestre Theater soundboard recording from March 10, even though this might be even better playing-wise. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, you can hear that he studied Charlie Parker solos. Thanks for commenting.

You're welcome Samuel. It's one of my favorites too. The shorter second one later the same year is also great. Thanks for commenting.

Thanks for commenting. Yes, Jaco was often in great shape in 1986. In the spring and autumn/winter of that year he played better than during the last couple of years in Weather Report in my opinion. And you're absolutely correct about the recorded sessions with Stanley Clarke. That recording would be a blast to hear. I hope Stanley will release it some day. Peace to you as well. Greetings from Norway.

Bass of doom was gone definitely a fretted bass

You're correct. The bass of doom was gone by then. On this gig and the rest of the tour he alternated between the bass in this photo and a fretless with white pickups. Thanks for commenting.
