PS his father was playing around the world to put food on the table. He probly couldn't do anything else. Like many other ordinary people trying to get some money for the family.

If you've even seen the Jaco Pastorius bass lesson video you know the man was also very intelligent and articulate. He had extensive virtuosity with his instrument as well as musical theory and composition.
Very few people will know the tune he begins with here.. its the Theme from "The High And The Mighty," a John Wayne airplane in distress film from 1954. I've always loved that melody.
I love this solo! It shows every side of Jaco! You could hear how funky he is when he grooves along with his looper, what a groove! Incredible technique he had with those harmonics is beyond comprehension. The melodic side shows at the very beginning. We lost him at too young of an age. The bouncer that hit him was a martial artist and should’ve known how much force to actually use to subdue somebody and I feel he used too much lethal force. RIP Jaco Pastorius.
I was fortunate enough to see Weather Report on many occasions and Jaco always had his shit together. What we just saw is classic Jaco... A lot of folks compare Jaco to Jimi which makes sense. Jaco has always cited Jimi as a huge influence to him. One thing for certain is Jaco took the fretless bass to an entirely different level. One of the most terrible losses was Jaco's untimely death - may he rest in peace...

I was acquainted with Jaco for a time in the 80s. One day he and I were drinking in a bar, talking about music. Suddenly, out of nowhere, he said, "I want to stop drinking and taking drugs, but I don't know how." It sounded like a cry for help. At the time I had the same problem (I been clean since 1988). Imagine how I felt. Two years later, he was gone.

@@motto25 Jaco was a good man when his problems weren't affecting him, very down to earth (even when he described himself as the World's Greatest Bass Player; he said is very matter-of-factly, in the same way he'd describe what he had for dinner). I wasn't close with him, but we hung out from time to time. Of course, back then, everyone had a "Jaco Story." But this, and his music, are how I prefer to remember him. I'm not a young man and I've lost a lot of loved ones over the years. It never stops hurting, but somehow, time allows a clarity of perspective that helps you to accept the inevitable.
My mom was his cousin and grandmom was his aunt and if it weren't for them I would have never known him and his music. And Wish I had any of his talent! I'm truly blessed to have his blood running through my veins and am saddened because I could never speak to him and learn from him about guitar 🎸, but am going to Honor him soon like My friend Melissa who owns a bar in Bridgeport, PA who honors him everyday

Saw Jaco @ The Capitol theatre in Pasaic NJ with Weather Report! After one of his solos he threw his Jazz bass 20' to a guy off-stage that caught it. The best ever!
Always a master of timing, effect loops and chops. He could put together a total finished product from the bass alone A constant source of inspiration for young and old bassists, who left us too early

Jaco was so much more than just a technical wiz on the bass. The guy could not only play piano, drums, and many other instruments but he composed music for all of them! He just had an insane grasp of the fundamentals far beyond most musicians. Still, I most appreciate the insane levels of funk he could drop with his Bass of Doom!
Jaco and I went to grade school together at Saint Clements in Fort Lauderdale. I was with him the day that he ripped the frets out of his electric base. The reason was because of the humidity in Fort Lauderdale and we lived on a lake in Oakland Park and theStand-up base just fell apart and was too hard to maintain. Back then we made all of our money cutting lawns has kids. Jaco was a hell of a baseball player. he has huge hands and threw the ball well. I went on to play baseball with the Philadelphia Phillies when he used to wear the Phillies hat when he played a lot of concerts. If you look at his hat when he’s playing, it’s always too big.lol that was my hat in my head was bigger than his. He was a trip rest in peace, brother.
Beyond being the monster bassist, he was also an unbelievable jazz composer- and I am likely understating that. He was well on his way toward symphonic composition. Like most on his level, he was being consumed by himself....Music is dangerous, but worth it!

The reason was because of the humidity in Fort Lauderdale and we lived on a lake in Oakland Park and theStand-up base just fell apart and was too hard to maintain. Back then we made all of our money cutting lawns has kids. Jaco was a hell of a baseball player. he has huge hands and threw the ball well. I went on to play baseball with the Philadelphia Phillies when he used to wear the Phillies hat when he played a lot of concerts. If you look at his hat when he’s playing, it’s always too big.lol that was my hat in my head was bigger than his. He was a trip rest in peace, brother.

Beyond being the monster bassist, he was also an unbelievable jazz composer- and I am likely understating that. He was well on his way toward symphonic composition. Like most on his level, he was being consumed by himself....Music is dangerous, but worth it!
