This is the best tutorial on this topic I have ever seen. Most videos people make it so overwhelmingly loaded with extra talking around things or they don’t even show the process. Thank you for finally giving me faith in this method.
Thank you! Glad I could help!
I read through the comments.
1. He used oil based stain. You don’t have to let it dry.
2. He used Titebond 2 wood glue. Thin coat equals less cracks thick cost produces more cracks. Don’t let the glue dry past being tacky. Low humidity high room temp helps to pull moisture from the glue and paint.
3. He used latex paint. His was a primer that was laying around.
IMO if you had a Titebond wood glue that dried clear it wouldn’t affect the base color as much.
Thanks to the OP for making the video.
This is great, simple , accurate, helpful, no super production video.
Thanks a lot.
This was the best, most simple video I have watched on the topic so far.
Simple --- Straightforward!!!!! YOU ARE THE WINNER !!!! Thanks a bunch. I guess it will work with most any paint. I'll give a try !!!!
A great no b.s. tutorial with the best effect! Thank you!
This is great! The cracks appear like magic.
Thanks. love how easy you made it.
FINALLY! a succinct video showing how to do this. THanks
Thanks! That’s what I was striving for
Absolutely the best video on crackle ever....... period!
It looks great, love it. Thank you.
What a great find this video and your channel is! Can't wait to get to work on some projects now.
Thank you! Good luck!
Looks awesome and easy!
This worked PERFECT!!!! side note watch the temperature and humidity. My shop was 80 degrees low moisture. Works quick!
Glad to hear it!
Love it and love the speed of the video. Thanks
Thank you Fabiola!
It worked great for me! But just wondering if I need some sort of protection on it for outdoors. I did a DIY gas meter cover outdoors.
OMG YOU ARE A GENIUS !!!!
THANKS.
+maria casiano, thanks!
Looks amazing! I was buying "crackle" medium. Apparently it is just over priced glue. Bless you!
Thanks!
I was shocked when I tried glue a few months ago! I had an old cabinet door and I knew I was going to sand off the paint I'd just put on because I goofed, so I decided to play with glue and crackle! I painted glue on one half nice and even and all the same Direction. The other half I painted it on thick and all willy nilly like I was painting on chalk paint. then I painted the whole cabinet with the same color paint. I came back about an hour later and I was shocked at the difference! One end was just a perfect shattered Crackle, and the other end look like somebody had taken a sledgehammer to glass! It was so cool some of the crackles were three quarters of an inch wide! It was really fun to know that you could do some really freaky crackling with thick crazy brushed on glue. I keep seeing these tutorials where they're telling people to let the glue dry completely before they paint over it. I keep telling people in the comment think about that. Once the glue dries there's nothing happening to make it Crackle. The woman in the video was having to use her finger to make the paint do anything after the glue is dry that should tell you something LOL I don't understand why people don't have any common sense! During the drying process of the glue there are things happening molecules are doing stuff and that's causing the pain on the top to do stuff but when things aren't in flux things don't change! I would think would be so obvious that once that glue is completely dry painting over it would not make your paint Crackle!
Great explanation. Thanks!
Great idea. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you
Great technique & music!
Thanks!
Great idea! looks great too.
+Eamon Walsh DIY Thank you!
This works with PVA glue too guys! No need to use wood glue, save your money and pick up Elmer's at the dollar store! Also, the thicker the layer of glue, the wider the cracks!
Hi, what kind of paint is used, latex or oil?
@@dirtysteve3029 latex
True, except that, if purchase by the gallon, wood glue is not much more expensive than Elmer's glue.
What she says is true. I got a 1 Liter bottle of Elmer's glue on Amazon for 8 bucks Canadian. Did some tests with thick and thin glue, and the cracks differ on each case of thick glue vs. thick paint. Makes different size cracks. In some cases, very large cracks. There are so many variables between how much paint, and how much glue. Specially on a large project. Even brush strokes play a factor.
PVA glue is wood glue
Amazing. Thank you.
Thank you too!
Class job
This is fantastic! I’m refinishing an outdoor bench that has been in my mom’s family for many years. Can I use this technique for exterior use? I don’t want the cracked/chipped paint to come off when people sit on the bench.
That"s a great idea 👍.
This looks great! Can this be done outside? We’re in England and it ll be about 15 degrees C - we need to do this in situ. Also is the stain dry before applying the glue? Many thanks
It works best in warm environment for the glue to dry quickly. The stain does not have to be fully dry, but it's best if it is.
adding to the arsenal.......................TY!!!!!!!!!
I have a question.. can I do this to laminate doors on a bathroom cabinet . or do you have to use solid wood to start any project ?
I'm using that idea!
I look forward to seeing it in a project Derek Conway!
- BEAUTIFULLY done ! ! ! Thanx 4 sharing. Did you use latex or oil based paint ???
Excellent video on how to do this process. Can this be achieved on all types of materials ie(plastic, metal...etc.)
I haven’t tried it on anything else, but don’t see why not as long as the glue and paint will stick...
Did you seal the wood first before applying the stain?thanks I'm from the Philippines
No I didn't
Very cool idea.
Thanks Bill D.
Very cool. I am going try this
+mark zwolfer Thanks! Practice on a few small scrap pieces first... Good luck!
Fantastic!!
Thank you!
Great tutorial. Can you accomplish this with a sprayer instead of a brush?
Wow! What is your experience, how stable the surface is? Is it good for floor also or will shoes/walking damage this painting?
You’d have to add a clear coat of some sort, but it’s very durable
Sick bro. I'm doing shiplap at my house gonna try this tomorrow. I'll let u know
Is the base stain waterbased or oil based? DO you let it dry completely before applying the glue, or is it still damp from the stain?
Hello, is it oil or waterbase paint what you used for the top coat?
Que produtos voce uso pra fica assim fico top
very nice
Thank you
That's cool.
Thanks 🙂🙂🙂
Thank you!
Looks amazing! I want to use this method on my new dining table, to get that worn rustic look, and I was wondering if you have any tips on a top coat to seal it in? Or is it good enough to use right of the bat?
Thank you! I’d think any durable top coat would work. Good luck!
How did it turn out because I'm about to do the same thing with mine! I was going to sand it off and blah blah blah but i think this technique would be much better and give it that wow factor!
can i do that on already gloss painted skirting boards and do we need to put top clear gloss when finish to protect it please?
I’m sure you can. The top coat is up to the durability you want. It was very solid without though
and here i thought you had to buy special chipping paint from places like Michaels arts and crafts or other craft stores where you buy two small bottles that you pay a lot for. Thanks for this it looks amazing and even better when it dries
Never even knew that stuff existed! Thanks for watching!
This is awesome! I want to do this to the old captains bedframe I just purchased! What brand of wood glue did you use? Also do you have a picture of this piece assembled? Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! I used Titebond wood glue. No pics at this time... thanks for watching!
@@AModernMaker which glue exactly my bro!
What's the purpose of the stain layer? Seems to me this might work well with just the pva glue and then paint on top?
That's cool TFS ❤️
Thank you!
Would this technique work on rough sawn cedar? Or does it need to be stock lumber smooth to start with? Anyone tried it on a rougher texture??
cedar is very oily and the sap is acidic. paint issue sticking.
Can this work on black leather shoes? If I just use the glue and then paint over? Thanks
Very cool.
Thank you +abe frohman
would this be good with epoxy over it so people could walk on it? would the paint easily fall off?
Epoxy should work well for that purpose.
Can you layer different colors in between and still get the crackle effect?
Yes you can. The cracks come from the glue and paint combo.
Awesome 👍
Thank you!
Very interesting video, and good explanation, but I miss what kinds of paint do you use? Is it regular wood paint?
It was just a latex paint. White primer to be exact. Something cheap.
Do you have to use a stain for the first coat or can you use another paint?
No stain necessary.
Hello MM, How long did you let the glue set (dry)? I let it set for about 5-6 min. Got the crack look ,but not as big as what is in the video .
Thanks Daniel.
+Daniel Durkton Just long enough for it to get a tacky feel to it. Might try playing around with either: more glue, less dry time, more paint, or softer brush strokes. Good luck!
Thanks Will do . Have a great weekend !!!!!
bohemian46 please let me know too. Thanks!
This is very cool and a very timely look. To reproduce does it always have to be an oil bases stain or could you use an oil based paint? Also, does the top coat always have to be water based?
+MaddMaxx Thanks! I haven't tried any of those variations yet so I'm not sure. If I do, I'll let you know.
Thank you and looking forward to it. I have been inspired by many of your videos and hope to reproduce them in some way.
Oil based paint will NOT work. All coats .
Omg.....IT ...... works. I'm doing a haunted house this year. N I'm doing the IT scenes wit the 3 doors.its amazing . Thank you so much. I love love it Happy Halloween 🎃 2022.chaparral nm.😚
Nice thank you
I really like the outcome !!! I have a question , does it work with any kind of paint ?
Thank you ΚΑΤΕΡΙΝΑ ΠΙΤΣΙΟΥ! I haven't tried it with any other types of paints so I'm not sure. When I do, I'll let you know!
It only works with acrylic paints, and the less sheen the better. Flat or dull being the best. Also do not use the best quality paint.. use something on the low end.. not the cheapes,t but avoid the top quality products.
Was that wood painted white before the stain? It looked really light!
No it was just a “white” wood.
I want to do this for outdoor pine I’m using instead of buying aged sleepers
Any tips?
Should be the same process, just do one section at a time and add a UV resistant clear coat if you want
is the top coat water based?
About how long do you let the glue set before you start painting?
As long as it takes to get tacky. Not wet, not dry. On a hot day, only takes a few minutes.
Why doesn’t this work for me??? I used it over something that was already stained. Did it not work because of the sealer that was already on the stained piece?
Is there a way to make the cracks not so over the top?
Great looking finish. Are the paint and stain water based or oil based?
+Clive Bashford Thank you. Stain is oil based, paint is water based.
For the best results use water based products all the way.
Hi, can I use this method for painting my kitchen cabinets ?
Yes you can! Just make sure to practice several times to get the technique down.
Omg! Great idea!!!!!! Gonna do mine too. They're so outdated and boring. Thank you for the idea
This is the best crackle paint video I've seen, simple and to the point. One question though, does the base layer have to be stain ?
Thank you Jessica. No, the base layer doesn’t have to be stain. But the color of the cracks will be a combination of the base color and the dried glue color.
@@AModernMaker Thanks for the reply, might try this on an old dresser
I think it would look great 👍
does this work with any paint and stain or does the paint have to be a certain sheen
I’ve only tried water based paint.
What is base stain ?
Seems like an easy technique! Would it work to poly over and then stencil words over, and then poly again?
I'm sure it would!
have you tried to write on the poly coat ?? result??
Glue then dry then over regular paint ,, is that will save the old wood even if a kid put a glass of water won’t damage ? ,, I have an old wood crack chipped I’m getting crazy how to save the wood ,, thank you now I know how ,, it’s good to learn on UA-cam people in videos they teach us how to paint correctly on what paint to choose 👍👍👍👌👌👌👌👌 love this videos,,
Glue should not be totally dry. Just “tacky.” It’ll protect the wood like paint does. You can add a clear coat over the top to add more protection.
Love your Technique great job the results are amazing can you tell me what type of glue you used thank you very much again great job.
+Y Barabbas Thank you! It was just titebond 2.
A Modern Maker
Thanks for the response I tried Elmer's Carpenter's glue but I think the Titebond might give me a better effect thanks again. Back to the garage.
+Y Barabbas The timing and amount of everything has an effect on the end result as well. Possibly the temp in your garage too. Might have to use light passes with a heat gun if it’s cold. Good luck! Let me know if you have any more issues.
A Modern Maker
Thanks brother really appreciate your help had a small heater going on in the garage. I'm getting the crack effect just not as dramatic I'll keep working on it thanks again man.
No problem Y Barabbas, any time.
Wonderful !! RESPECT FROM UKRAINE !!!
Thanks!
Do you seal it afterwards with varnish?
If you want
SOLD!!!!! The hell with milk, this is what I'm doing.. thanks for the video
Great! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Would a water base stain work as well ?
Yes I’m sure it would
what type of paint to use please?
Thats a really crappy paint job you did........I love it !!!! Nicely done.
That really Cracks me up 🤣
😂
LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL
Does this work with spray paint as well?
I have no idea. It would have to be a thick coat of spray paint though...
What type of paint did you use? Is it latex or enamel
Latex
0:39 What type of paint? Oil or Water based?
👏
Wow! I’m loving this! Can I spray it with clear coat without changing the way it looks? I’m afraid the crackle effect will chip off.
It’s very durable as is but yes you can definitely clear coat it. That’s what I did when I used it for baseboards
A Modern Maker ~ Wow that’s and awesome idea to use them as baseboards! I bet it looks really pretty ☺️ Thx for letting me know that clear coat would work.
Any time 👍
If the wood is smooth and doesn't have the 'wood pattern' to begin with, will this still work?
What was the second coat of
You did not state so, but I'm assuming you're using oil base stain and latex paint over it? Let us know, please:) Great video! Thanks for sharing.
That is correct. Thanks!
I'd be curious how to do this over fabric with a clear coat.
Probably the exact same way minus the stain
Cool--does the paint chip or flake off?
I added a coat of poly on top and it’s very durable.
A Modern Maker. Polyurethane or polycrylic? Does it matter? Im new to this--i prefer water base-THANKYOU
I used water based polyurethane. You’re welcome!
Hi
I tried without using a stain and household general purpose white glue and on top used a wood paint, surprisingly I didn't get any cracks
Do I need to use some sort of base stain to get cracks?
Please help
No, the stain just gives contrast in between the cracks. The cracks come from the glue drying and shrinking pulling the paint apart before it dries. You can try adding more glue and waiting until it’s “tacky”. So not quite dry, but not wet either so you can apply the paint without it mixing with the glue. It also needs to be warm enough to dry fairly quickly, so if the weather is cold you’ll have to do it indoors or near a heat source. There’s some other good comments on what has worked for people.
@@AModernMaker
I'm from Sri Lanka, very hot and humid climate.
I did everything as in you instructions but didn't work.
Maybe coz if the high humidity! Dunno. Tried several times and each time didn't work.
In any case after it fully dries won't the paint peel off coz it's over the glue?
Usually the reason it doesn’t crack is not enough glue, the glue died too much, or too much paint. I would try more glue, let it set for a minute or less, then add a little paint, less than you want, just to see if it’ll crack. The glue needs to be pretty thick and still a little wet otherwise it’ll dry too quickly and it’ll be like painting over dried glue.
Once you get it right, it’s very durable and won’t peel off easily. But you can add a clear coat on top to make sure.
Cool man
Thanks
Will try and give feedback
Good
PS, Great video !!!!
Thank you Daniel Durkton!
🔥Have you ever heard of SHOU SUGI BAN?💥 you may like it.
this ancient Japanese technique produces blackened, charred wood siding that is resistant to the elements, making shou sugi ban wood appropriate for both interior and exterior applications. Charred wood can serve as a fire retardant, since it lacks the oils needed to ignite a flame; this helps shou sugi ban surfaces last for many generations.
What about adding floetrol to it?
I haven't tried that
Can it be protected with an outdoor barnish for example?
What type were you thinking? Most should be fine as long as it can be applied over paint.
Thanks MM. Actually I spent the whole day trying different consistencies and finally ended up with a fantastic result!! Your tips are just fantastic! Thank you a lot for sharing!! greetings from Chile!!
Greetings! Glad they could be of some help!
how do I get that in dark?
Which part?
