Final update: this little reel is the little engine that could ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e . It performed flawlessly and was easy to adjust drag in the moment while I was battling a 35lb bat ray behemoth. Mind you, this reel is spooled with only 25 lb braid and 25 mono topshot. It's paired with the kastking telescopic heavy power rod and the two work well together. This has now earned my respect and confidence when traveling and fishing. If you have ever hooked into large rays and sharks, you know they pull extremely hard and can run forever! This thing clamped down on the fish and was easy to adjust during the fight. It has a nice decently fast retrieve as well. Twice the fish went on mad runs and I was able to gain back line quickly to avoid spooling.

I actually experience this fishing for Walleye, Northern Pike & Tiger Muskies. My pole a a bit Dated, and it was also one of those two piece configuration.Any how the Top half of the rod slipped to where it was on upside down. Needless to say it worked daned good that way. Until one day I went to Cast it out with some Crank bait on the end. Well I guess by now you've figured out were the Top of my Rod went with my crank bait. Here's one thing I've often wondered does it preserve the line cast after cast. Or does it tend to wan't to twist or not up the more you use it such a way ???
For casting I wouldn't recommend a spiral wrap as the eyes would be inverted during the cast, the rod I have is specifically made for trolling or bottom fishing.

I had a spiral wrapped rod 30 years ago. It was a fresh water from Cabelas. Can't remember the brand. The second I took it out of the package I ran to to post office and sent it back. It was the strangest bird I ever saw. Didn't want be seen with it .they didn't sell for a reason. I have never seen a other one in 65 years of fishing, salt or fresh east coast or west.
in the states there’s a few rod factories that does acid spiral wrap rods., Thrasher Rods is the few and does an excellent work on acids., other than that it’s mainly custom rod builders that does them., or outside of the states like italy u have ab1 for its pry acid rods., okuma also makes them out only in other countries n they call it sly rods.., acid rods is an absolutely big game changer for pelagics! instead of fighting the fish for an hour on a conventional rod setups but with an acid setups it takes about 1/2 that time so u can start focusing on catching more fishes 😉😉😉

Acid Shirley wrap rods
I use a 6.8 ESU6630 Crower rod Fujie eyes Shimmino Speed Master 16-2 two speed 80lb braid. Cant Remember my rod ever doing that? Even 25- 49lb grouper brought big bull sharks Huge A-jays up .That said interesting rod first one i have ever seen in 35 years on the water?

I've not seen many spiral wrapped rods in retail stores, but most good custom rod makers can make these for you. My friend that made this rod so long ago has passed away, but his custom rods still fish the waters of the FL Keys that he loved!

I'm sad to report the Coach passed away this year....we will miss him dearly.
My friend, they just gave me a rod for the sea from 10 feet to 65 pounds, the brand is Marathon Fortress 2 - 8000, 4.1.1, those here in Cuba we did not know them, please, what can you tell me about this team.

Can you cast that type of rod?
Not really designed for that, but yes, you can cast it especially with heavier weight. I would recommend a spinning reel if you really want to do some effective casting.
Are you using Shimano TLD 50 ?
Typically TLD 25 and 30's

Coach, of Coach's Custom Rods died about a month ago, it wasn't a paid sponsor spot, those rods were over 20 years old built by Coach himself and gifts to me way before I could have ever offered him any advertising. They are still on my boat to this day, with little to no damage other than cosmetic scars, and the design is truly a dream to use with the spiral wrap. You will see very few of these rods on the market because they are expensive to mass produce and of course the quality could never be matched in mass production. These rods mean the world to me as a tribute to a truly great man.
@@GablesOnTheGo yea I know what you mean. I have a buddy in Sanibel Island that owns a Bait & Tackle shop who used to build custom rods and I was given one on my birthday years ago. I still have it and occaisionly use it. The detail and craftmanship is unmatched to anything that you can buy from any major company mass producing rods.😎
Hello im new to salt water fishing im trying to catch amberjack could u pls help me find a set up less than 250?
Not trying to be a jerk with my response, but you get what you pay for. If you are trying to target amberjack with a 250$ combo… they will strip the gears and drag out of that reel in a couple of trips. Now you are stuck with spending another 250$ on another cheap combo. Save your money… and spend a little extra coin on a good setup. For amberjacks… I run all shimano Trinidad’s or talicas. Have never been defeated by one. I also have my Trinidad’s paired with shimano trevala xxh rods. My talicas are on custom acid wrap (spiral guide) crowder rods. Hope this was helpful

Hello! I had several set ups in that video but I think thin one you are referring to is a Shimano TLD 25 on a spiral wrapped rod. The TLD's are pretty bulletproof and reasonably priced. Thanks for watching!

All the butts are too short like 15 inches or so. 18 or more is better for bottom fishing.
