I’ve fished my whole life, but I’ve only used spinning reels. I decided on buying a new conventional rod and reel, to take out with me on boats and other things like that. This is a great video and explained everything I needed.
I went deep sea fishing and when I pulled up the anchor to leave the reef I was fishing on I snagged a Penn 209 rod/reel combo with the UPC sticker still on it. Best catch yet.
I just purchased a conventional lever drag reel. I didn’t know any of this stuff. I’m so glad I came across your video. Valuable basic information. Thanks so much
You have no idea how long it took me to find a video like this one! 😂😂😂 Thanks for making a great, simple, informative video for us rookies out there 👍
Great video, just like you said, most move on to techniques of fishing and ignore the basics. Most are embarrassed to ask the basics but want the great experience of fishing. Info like this takes the first 10 min of getting reacquainted with a Rod and Reel easy.
I experienced everything in this video some years ago . Outer Banks , N.C. Fortunately the Captain and Mate showed us the correct/best way to handle rod & reel. Thanks 4 the video.
Thanks so much for sharing this video. I just bought one of those vintage reels and I really didn’t know how to operate the reel. Thanks again Onelove.
I took a charter out of Fort Myers Florida several years back. I favor Shimano baitrunner, open face reels with dual drag. If going deeper I'll use a Penn 114-H 6/0 reel. This was a 6 passenger charter, 2 father-son pairs and me and a friend, We're about 20 miles out and I was catching the most fish using a 1-1/2 oz egg sinker, swivel, a ft of 100 lb mono and a 2/0 hook. There was a light chop 2-3 ft and the 4 strangers were holding themselves rock steady to the BOAT. Half way through the day trip the Captain asked me to demonstrate how I fish. I drop my bait, a piece of fish belly and chopped squid, when the sinker hits bottom I note the elevation, crank for 6-12 inches from the bottom, length of the leader, and set the ROD to the HORIZON. That way the bait isn't being JIGGED from the CHOP, you can FEEL an actual strike and it also minimizes getting a fish time to wedge under a rock. They all caught 2-4 fish each and I wasn't scorned with my haul of 16 fish.
At age 63 I am just starting to use a conventional reel to go for shark on the east coast of Canada. Your instructions are most helpful. I like your style of presentation- plain language without the annoying, "Hey whatsup youtube" I need to learn how to adjust drag. I picked up a Penn Senator. I will check out your other videos. Thanks.
Well thank you so much for saying that. It was truly my intention to share with folks exactly what I learned the hard way. I was hoping to not make it sound like I knew much of anything but rather to share things that I would have really loved someone share with me. If I can help you with anything at all please don't hesitate to reach out....Thanks for watching. Mark.
Thanks a lot. I got some new gear recently and even the store staff cannot explain the basics as well. Backlashed yesterday and am glad I found your video. Look forward to more
Thank you!!! This video was so helpful!! I just bought a penn squall 60LD and it surprised me when it didn’t have a line guide and I really needed to find out how to spool the line back evenly. This was the only video I found to explain it! Thanks again! SUBSCRIBED!!!! 👍🏼
I use a level wind reel in fresh water I never use the cast control I have a Calcutta 250 g.t.b. it's a small reel but it's for smaller lures cast very fast you have to keep your thumb on it all the time I don't let anyone use it because every time they do they back lash it I can't emagin what mess you would have with one of large reels thanks for sharing
Good video for beginners. We call them multiplier reels in the UK,same reel, same cautions needed to avoid a backlash/birds nest. Glad you hit on helping beginners.
Experience is what's learned just after you need it the most. Ive been offshore 20 times or so. Cant tell you how many times Ive back lashed a real. Finally got the hang of it, sorta. Never have got the hang of guiding the line back onto the reel tho.... for sure, its a learned skill and it takes a lot of learning. Ive been embarassed so many times and made me feel so bad I bought my own gear so I dont screw up the charter owned rigs.
I think you should keep on with simple sir! Specially coming from a fresh water angler. I learned a lot and this video was perfect for walking on my charter thank you. 🤙
Just bought a new pen squall 30 combo and it’s my first trolling / level wind reel And it’s not like my spinner and bait caster so this video was very helpful ty
Thank you for this video I’m about to get on a boat for the first time and go about a hour out! And I’m asking around for what I need and they keep mentioning these Rods and Reel Rigs! I use spinning rods myself I want to learn and this video was short and sweet
I know! Dang I sure liked that reel, but you should see it now....totally corroded....still hard to beat the TLD for durability...it aint fancy but they are workhorses!
Thank you very much for a helpful tutorial on conventional reel use. I happen to have a Garcia reel that has the star drag but no level line component. Haven't used for 30 years but cleaned it up and think it should be fine for the June-July snapper season in the gulf. Great video!! Major Smith
Shimano Tekota, but be warned, the finish on the older Tekota's would corroded and bubble up and flake off. Nice reel but the older ones were a problem.
hey man, this was a super concise and helpful video, thanks for uploading. I mostly fish freshwater but i sell fishing equipment online so I needed to learn saltwater, this was really helpful.
Thank you for the good desciption of the difference between level-wind and non- level-wind. Didn't know the difference until today when i started looking into buying a couple new cod fishing reels here in nl canada. The 3 level winders i have now have started to fail alternateing back and forth and are up for replacement(canadian tire,6 years old) Think i'm gonna stick with a couple level winders for mom and dad for now(they're in their late 70's lol) Try to buy decent quality👍 I learned something new today! Maybe my new reel in the spring will be a pro non- level winder😃
I really appreciate that little line guide tip. I've often wondered how to guide the line back onto the reel evenly if there isn't a line leveler. This kind a small detail is what makes the difference between landing and losing fish. Thanks friend.
I just started fishing inshore and off shore on the gulf side of Florida and I’m trying to stock up my boat. I have several decent spinning rods and reels but looking at some conventional stuff for grouper and snapper. Any recommendations for bigger fish?
I recently bought two Shimano Speedmaster II and love them.....if you are going to load them with braid. Mono, I might choose the older Shimano TLD 25's . Great reels, good line capacity with mono and the hold up.
Great video thanks. Now do you set your drag with the lever fully engaged? Also when live bait fishing do you use half to no drag then when a fish hooks up you fully engage that lever?
Trolling, lever at just enough drag to set the hook, but light enough to let the fish run. If I'm yellowtailing, open bail let the bait fall freely, then when the fish takes it, close the bail and reel. I have Shimano baitrunners for live bait and let the fish run for a bit then come tight on them once they have it for awhile. The only time I lock the drag is AJ's or grouper on the on the bottom and you need to get their head turned out of the wreck or rocks.
wow ... stupid simple things are the biggest things that can break a trip. I been wondering level or non level to purchase and why the differences. Funny how we do skip the small things once you do it by nature. Thanks for the film!
How many yards of line is the least that you recommend having on a reel? I’m going on a trip next week. I have about 300 yards 80lb braid on my penn squall 30 size. Fishing for 50-100 pound tuna. Hope I get your help! Thank you 😎🤙🏼
Well, it depends on a couple of things. Your line should be plenty heavy IF you have enough of it to go light on the drag, I would prefer twice that amount of line for fast fish. If you have the Squall 30 lever drag, you'll only be able to put 13 pounds of drag on the fish, your line test will be overkill at that point and I would prefer more/lighter line. If you have the star drag reel, according to Penn you can put 30 pounds of pressure on, so you'll need stronger line, which 80lb test should be fine, and you'd be able to slow a big fish down quicker and therefore might get by with the 300 yds of 80lb. Now that's just my take on it, I hope others here with more knowledge will give you their opinion. But I will say, if you indeed get a 100 lb tuna on that rig, you better get ready for a battle and a smoked drag, tuna pull like a freight train!
@@GablesOnTheGo thank you for the reply! 😎✌🏼 this definitely helped me understand a little more of what I’m getting my self into! No one is talking about this on UA-cam. Thanks again

I just bought my rod and I just wanted to know what the little push knob on the left side of the reel does, it makes a clicking noise while you reel if it’s switched bud idk why
Great content bud, I’m definitely a newbie and luckily came across this video, I bought a tekota 800 as my very fist boat reel and didn’t have the foggiest idea how it works.. Had it pre spooled with 50Lb raid and 80lb fluoro leader.. Those whales won’t stand a chance lol
Mike I think it would be good to have both, there are just some things that a conventional works better for...like trolling, and heavy bottom fishing. You can certainly use spinning for this, but conventionals just make certain things easier.

You certainly can, but it is not designed specifically for this. The right tool for any job just makes things easier. A spinning reel for casting would be my recommendation.
There are very specific reasons why no line guide is not only an advantage, but sometimes a necessity not to have one. Ahhh,so if you're catching VERY big fish it's an advantage. I'm just kayak fishing 1-3 miles off the coast in the pacific - the biggest fish I would catch would be a 50lb yellowfin tuna or 100lb bluefin tuna - but I mostly catch 5 - 10lb rockfish and the occasional large halibut. Only a googan doesnt know the difference between a levelwind reel and a freespool reel. Prob shouldnt be fishing either until they are taught or schooled on how each works. There are very specific reasons why no line guide is not only an advantage, but sometimes a necessity not to have one. Not having a levelwind allows you to reel heavy terminal tackle (like swivels) up on to the spool, especially when you are fishing with a long leader....in some cases as much as 50 feet of line.
