Neil is one of the most underrated, underappreciated artists of our time.
How many singers have had the conscience and the guts of committing themselves both in lyrics and harrowing singing as much as Neil Young in this song?
I’m 70. Had the honor and pleasure of seeing him live. He’s still rockin’ and so am I. I still have this album and a turntable. Staggering talent!
What a gift to the world. I may not see it…but I do believe deep in my heart, that we shall overcome some day.🔥
I’m 72. This song is alright
Bod dylan
Love this song so much. The lyrics in this song are so powerful yet all too true. Neil had the guts and then some to tell it like it was at that point in time. However there was more to this song then just the lyrics the guitar piano and drums in between the lyrics had a fantastic beat to it. Too top it all off after the second verse that electric guitar ripped like thunder in the sky which sounded really awesome as well. Good job Neil love your music

Great post. 💯
A brilliant, powerful song that rings true half a century later
Tell him to give them all the money he made off this song
@@kimberleylang3178 He gave a lot of the proceeds to charities and foundations for human rights and anti-racism. You were saying? Kinda make you feel "southern" now, don't it, Lily Belle?
Especially in the shadow of the Orange Man.
Great song.
WE ALL BLEED RED AND HAVE SAME ORGANS WITH AN INDWELLING SPIRIT . HUMAN BEINGS .
Amen to that ❤ 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍
Treating human beings like garbage is beyond evil. Like dots on the ground they don’t care about.
Who sang the truth what was going on. It was quite sad but it was the truth what was going on. God made us all the same. God bless everybody 🙏🙏🙏🙏😊
I've never understood how some folks hear a song and instantly choose to take offense instead of LISTENING and feeling. As with all music, it is meant to make you feel something and if you choose to feel offended over feeling empathy than your "world revolves around me" attitude is stopping you from great growth.
Obviously, anyone who knows anything about the world knows racism doesn't just stay within the confines of the Southern US (Boston, anyone?), but I guess he meant to touch on the very real history of public beatings and lynchings of African American men in the South after slavery had ended.
That's not an agenda or pointing blame, it's simply our shared history.
Yeah and I think people also need to remember that Neil Young is a Canadian, so don't take it so personally. I think Lynyrd Skynyrd said it best in Sweet Home Alabama, I believe they understood that the music comes first - but a quick jab is also perfectly justified in this case!
@@speedygonzales8144 Speaking of the history of lynchings is disrespectful to whites? Can you even hear yourself speak?
Also, you don't know me so don't assume to. I'm beyond and above the liberal/conservative game. Those are labels used for political parties and quite frankly fuck both sides of the aisle.
Think outside of the box you've placed yourself in✌️✌️✌️
@@speedygonzales8144 I know where you're coming from man, and I agree with the sentiment. But it's just a song dude, a work of art. I don't think it's meant to be taken so literally or applied to situations in 2020. It was recorded in 1970... the guy was 25. There was no social media and no mainstream coverage of issues like this, cut him a little slack. Neil Young once said, "I'd rather play 'Sweet Home Alabama' than 'Southern Man' anytime." That's all you need to know about the guy right there.
@@speedygonzales8144 That is simply not true, as per the reasoning I stated.
@@speedygonzales8144 The fictional song speaks of a man who has witnessed a lynching (non fictional) and he's speaking to the person (fictional) who committed the act of. A specific character, not every white man as you claim.
Ah, yes, the famous, "I don't agree with so fuck you," line. Can you form a rational sentence with someone who doesn't think like you and agree to disagree?
Instant fan. I’m looking up his entire catalog!! I used to like “Sweet Home Alabama” tune until I actually read the lyrics and a comment brought me here.
Ohh..Wow ..Super nice song👏👏👏Keep it up & God bless!!🙏❤❤❤🌹🌹🌹

A feud that started 54 years ago. Crazy how long it's been!
(edited) Crazy how long ago it was when it started, but it was short-lived. When you hear these songs on the radio and realize how these songs were written 50+ years ago. Thank you @dianekerleylong4085
@@gabrielcolon5245 It ended shortly after Ronnie Van Zandt replied. A week before his death in the plane crash he was seen wearing a Neil Young t-shirt. Neil Young wrote a song for Lynnrd Skynnrd to include on their next album. They were both among the best songwriters.
It wasn't as much of a "feud" as it was differences in perceptions.
Been watching many historical videos about both last week and again this week.
Enjoy your Tuesday. Would love to see Neil Young perform at the DEM Convention this week in Chicago. He could help unify us even more.
@dianekerleylong4085 Yes, ma'am. I do recall reading it was short-lived. There are so many great singers/artists whose lives ended too soon. Thank you, and enjoy the rest of your day as well! 🙏✌️🙂
@@gabrielcolon5245 Veteran? I was an Army spouse over 20 years and the " Yes ma'am" brings back good memories. It used to be widespread when I was growing up. Now you hear it mainly in the South, and by active duty military and veterans of all ages.
I respect your answer. I loved and still love the music by both. Superb song writers.
Neil Young is one of the first artists that drew my attention to race relations in America. Born in ‘63; it has been a long road. I thought things were going well until the fascist republicans came along. Neil is just as critical today as he was back in the ‘70’ and 80’s.
This song was playing in my head today and i had to listen to it !
Same. Today.
Same in California 2.2.22
@nwo detox what is nano ?
@nwo detox 🤨
I came to it today for the same reason. Don't know how the song got in. Hadn't thought of it in years. But there it was.
I heard this song for the first time on the radio year 2003 and had no idea what it was talking about until I had my experience with it, great song though.
Please just enjoy the song.
I think "Lily Belle" is a 60's version of "Karen"
Wow. Racist. I’m white skinned. You didn’t wTch this shit go down on human beings did you?
Lily Belle is Lillie Belle Allen, this song is about her murder in 1969 and her father who was a preacher. Her father is the "southern man" in this song. The "bullwhips cracking .." is a metaphorical pre Emancipation Proclamation reference to the sound of the bullets piercing Lillie's car and Lillie. The line "southern change gonna come at last, now your crosses are burning fast" is in reference to the civil rights movement ending the Jim Crow era. Also the line "southern man when will you pay them back .." is about how blacks were bound to property owners as sharecroppers during Jim Crow. Basically the song is about the civil rights movement and how not enough has changed since slavery.
Think again, really? This time think about it😊
Such a bold statement..even in 2023. Can't imagine Paul McCartney writing a lyric like this
McCartney wrote "Blackbird" as a tribute to the civil rights strife in the 60's.
Yes and that deserves its own respect for its style. But its not bold. Not like this. @barretthansen1786
Sure wish more minds would let this song sink in!
Pain.
tnx for sharing..

This is why Lynard Skynard made sweet home Alabama.Their conscience was obviously disturbed by this song.
And rightly so.Their answer to Neil's song didn't mention that the skies were always blue for a certain few.
Weakest reply to a diss track in music history
True, but this song is NOT subject to debate. Sweet Home Alabama was a good song, but it does NOT erase or in ANY way minimize what Neil had to say in this wonderful song.
Are you Dutch, or from New York? I suggest you give all that money from the Slave trade back to the blacks.
LS didn't counter because of their conscience. They countered due to their pride and defensiveness. A knee-jerk human reaction, especially in the deep south.

Southern man was about the inhumane cruelty of slavery back then during the times of slavery in the South. Slavery is wrong! Taking away another man's freedom to make them slaves and servants, to getting rich of the fruits of their labor, while they live in poverty is wrong!
THANK YOU NEIL YOUNG pay back has come

@@jim2642 🤣🤣🤣
Biologically, yes there is no such thing. Socially? It exists. Just as we created time, nations, and dichotomized ourselves as male and female, Europeans categorized us into different groups and called it races. The white race then put themselves at the top and forced people of color to take on these identities. Now that they have claimed these identities as their own and associate it with their cultures and histories, it is not anybody's right to take that away from them. Including you. You don't get to tell people their social identity doesn't exist.

#BLM
BLM sucks. All lives matter. According to God who created us.
Black racists !
I like most of Neil Young's music. Even this song. However, nobody alive today in the South is guilty of the sins Young sang about.
Slavery was a terrible evil and a stain on US history (In both the North AND the South). Slavery existed for some 150 years in the US, but the CSA only existed for 4-5 years. Honest historians will acknowledge this fact. Dishonest ones will not. But that terrible war in our nations past was about much more than slavery. The truth is that Mr. Lincoln declared war on the South in his inaugural address (Go and read it for yourself if you doubt me). Yet Northern written history books all blame the South for starting that war.
Also those who accuse long dead Southern Soldiers as being racist flesh dealers might want to ask themselves this one question. Why did Southern men fight? Do you honestly believe that Southern Soldiers fought to perpetuate slavery? Hardly. More than 95% of Southern men did not own slaves, and were simple farmers who actually had to try and compete against slave labor. It was only the wealthy elite who owned slaves (The descendants of these wealthy elite are still included in the top one tenth of one percent of the United States wealthiest people...and they live in the North, not the South).
The reason why the vast vast majority of Southern Soldiers fought is because their homeland had been invaded by a hostile army that was waging a war of terror upon the innocent civilian population of Southern States. This IS the truth. Totally innocent civilians were regularly the targets of the Northern army. They burned cabins, raping and murdering innocent civilians. This is why Southern men fought back. Wouldn't you?
Sterling Price thank you
Fuck off and take your traitorous lost cause with you.
Sterling Price needs a history Lesson. Jim Crow laws did not officially end until 1965. Are you saying no southerner who enforced Jim Crow laws and fought against the Federal government for trying to change them is alive in 2019??? Do you even know what Jim Crow laws were? Finally, when Jim Crow laws were officially struck from the books did the vast majority of southerners who wanted to keep these laws in place immediately change their attitude and embrace the new direction the country was talking?
Please let me rephrasre my original question, "are any people who supported Jim Crow alive today or did they all die in 1965? Werr the vast majority of southerners who supported Jim Crow from from 1877 -1965 rich or poor southerners? What motivated these southerners to put Jim Crow laws in place?
Yes they are ..they're be benefitting from the it...and they will have to pay for the sins of the fathers as the good book says...it even says prepare slaughter for there children....the highest will take revenge on you devils
@@hopefulelect6163 well you need to read the "good book" again because it clearly says 'the blood of the innocent will not flow for the guilty". The only guilty today would be the people still embracing racism. Southern or not.
I hate this song he's just calling the south racist when this stuff happened over 150 years ago
So racism doesn't exist anymore

There are still many avenues for those in charge to push their biased agenda. Now, the US is obviously a corporate owned entity, but still there are plenty of people that turn a blind eye to this as well. Until it will be too late.
