    Merry Clayton's voice crack on the word "murder" at 3:00 might be the best "happy accident" ever recorded. You can hear someone else in the studio react to it with a "Whoo." They knew it was a magical music moment.

      That was Mick yelling in approval as Merrys voice cracked. Afterwards said she would do it again and hit the note, Mick was like.. NO!.. THAT IS PURE GOLD!!!!!!.. It was at night and a pregnant Mary was literally in her hair curlers in the bed when the stones rep contacted her at home to do the song. Mary originally said no she wasn't getting out of her comfy bed. It was Mary's husband that convinced her to go, as it was paying good money. It being late at night and her being tired helped to contribute to one of the best voice cracks ever recorded. It's here on you tube. 20ft from stardom

      Cheers Mike - great comment!. I think when she cracks the top note, there's an ultra high pitch note which pierces through exactly in tune - but way up to the ceiling. Mick hears it the moment. Diamond stuff.

      The song would be a really good song without her voice. Her voice MADE this song great and cemented it in history. Especially when she gets tired during the all night recording session and her voice is breaking. It gives the song more depth and feeling. Classic!
      Unfortunately Merry soon lost her baby, as she was pregnant at the time of this recording.

    • @Pulsonar
      @Pulsonar 10 місяців тому

      @@roadrunnerproductionshavas1591 I heard about that, Merry is an unusually resilient woman with a formidable reputation for working relentlessly. She put tremendous effort into recording sessions with the Stones for Gimme Shelter, during her pregnancy. The Stones were reeling from Brian Jones death in summer 1969 and not in a great financial situation at the time, and the deadly Altamont concert disaster nearly destroyed them as a band later that year. But I would like to think that they gave Merry their support in some way after she suffered that huge baby miscarriage trauma. She made Gimme Shelter a huge hit for the Stones, and it came with a great sacrifice on her part. She survived a serious car accident in her mid 60s which left her a double leg amputee, but she’s still busy in the music industry as if the accident (2014) was just a blip, at 75 years of age! This is a woman of great character who deserves so much more.

      Di per sè è già stupenda ma quando poi entra la cantante tocca delle vette inarrivabili in quanto a potenza espressiva, ogni volta mi fa accapponare la pelle !

I wouldn't trade it for the world! Happiness is relative. Live to enjoy the time in which you live and to pass on greater things to those who come after you. My kids are about your age and they introduce me to all sorts of things unimaginable in my day. One moved to Viet Nam and got married. We went there for the wedding and travelled all around... something that was unimaginable in the 1970's. I Posted a Viet Nam Traffic video on UA-cam to the Jimmy Hendrix tune "Cross Town Traffic" and will soon post another on Rumble under "BMW Metro" with "Pokémon Vacation" playing. The trip kinda ties in both generations together.

      So true. And it’s thanks to Rolling Stones longtime mentor and teacher and father figure , Klaus Nomi. Mick Jagger had said “ we only achieved success because of the guidance and teaching and writing of Klaus Nomi .” In fact this song is modeled after Klaus Nomis hit , Total Eclipse, as a Stones tribute to the man who made them . Klaus Nomi had such an impact on the world through all the bands he mentored and made not only the Stones but. Journey, Queen. Even newer stuff like Guns n Roses. Klaus Nomi deserves all the credit

      I would think Josh is referring to other great songs like paint it black, and of course Led Zeppelin’s stairway to heaven, , there’s a few . Journey, the Beatles, and many other bands. The common denominator is of course, The Stone’s, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd up to even Guns & Roses and Metallica all credit their success to all of their longtime mentor and teacher and father figure Klaus Nomi. All the greatest are his creations . They all give Klaus Nomi credit for their success. If you listen to Klaus Nomis hit “ Total Eclipse “ you will clearly see where the Stones got their style and method.

      I always, thought this was one of Mick Jagger's sarcastic pro-drug addict's songs. I never could hear the lyric clearly, like in many Rolling Stones songs. Instead it is a slam song to the 19 year olds that were drafted into Vietnam war and the ones that survived and alive today must hate this song. I think our U.S.A. should have let Germany kick England's ass during WW ll , then helped them afterward. Had the Jagger's survived , then Mick Jagger might have had more respect for Veterans. I always heard ''Whoa children it's just a shot away'' and not ''War children'' !

    Ravishing in raw power, with a gritty urgency; and that scream of desperation, hitch and all. Best rock song ever.
    I picked up the needle and played it over and over again in my first year in college, till I wore the LP out. Now, as a retired physician,
    I still never tire of hearing it, esp the introductory riff.

    Melancholy and despair with powerful vocals overflowing with energy. Everything from the Guitars, Drums, Sax, Piano but especially the Vocals all make this the sound of 1969. I really like the stones CCR , gotta get ya some Marshall Tucker band in there , some Jim Croce in there and gotta have my Led Zeppelin and of corse the greatful dead.

I was in Kentucky/Tennessee at ft Campbell for two weeks and flew back to Germany that I had just left, refueled and ended up in Kuwait right on iraq border 28feb2003... by march17th of that year, every second of every day became "just a shot away"... things get finicky and strange in War, but hell, when can one have so much adrenaline legal by ones own government?
