I met J in Denmark street once years ago, he was hitting the guitar shops wearing a puffa jacket and shorts in the winter, I didn't want to bug him but went over and just said hello and how I admired his work expecting him to just say 'cool' or whatever and that would be that... he was cool as hell, asked me what I was looking at, we talked old Mustangs as I have a '71 comp I was thinking of selling and just hung out for abit in the store. A true legend, totally chilled just into his gear and playing, really meant alot that he made some time for me.
+Saint Louis Toneworks just like you overlooked your use of "of" in "should of" instead of using "have" you may be overlooking something and assuming too much. Where did you read that he didn't wanna do the interview? How do you know that the matter wasn't simply a yes-or-no deal and other factors, either motivating or out of contractual obligation, weren't at play? Things are often more complex than they seem and you yourself become the jackass if you accept your own interpretation of the world as being absolutely factual.
Its funny hearing everybody saying he sounds stoned, not enthused etc, etc. Obviously havent heard any interviews in the 90's where he would be so bored with the questions that he wouldnt even reply. J actually has come out of his shell over the years.
I like to have my action at a similar height and like...it’s playable, you just gotta get used to it (I’m also using 12-62 gauge strings so maybe that helps)
I play rhythm in a death metal band, my action is pretty similar to his, couldn't imagine tremolo picking and fast, agressive palm muting with a low action, my pick would be touching my neck pickup if it was at the height that most people have it at (3/32nds at the 12th fret on the low E).
What does everyone expect? He answered questions, showed his whole rig, explained a bit about his approach. Most people know J's a bit shy to begin with. Geez cut a non-pretentious musician some slack. Just getting a look at that massive high action on his touring guitars was pretty cool, when you consider that most of us cannot play with his precision on the low action fast playing setups everyone goes for. I met the guy briefly on the Martin N Me tour in Milwaukee. He was very quiet and seemed somewhat curious as to why we'd have him sign a ticket stub.......The guy is no phony is what you see. Cheers
"This is my clean sound..wich is the real tube.. wich I..you know...I guess wolud.. be distorted for some people... but its...really clean.. to me.. y..you know...for me" gotta love this guy...
just for the record, J has always been straight edge. (at least since i started listening to his stuff in the '80's.) I've met him several times and he is ALWAYS JUST LIKE THIS. guitar genius. socially very awkward. very quiet dude. cheers!
J would have been the perfect guitarist in the documentary film "it might get loud" instead of the Edge... I hope if they'll ever make "it might get loud part 2" J will be in the movie, he deserves it !
Maybe J isn't the most talkative guy, but he tries. I like his sincere answers. He's not a kiss ass. He can blow all of you haters out of the water with his guitar playing, but he isn't bragging about it. He's a laid back guy and is a master of his craft! Long live J Mascis!
J is extremely gracious to show off all his gear. I don't know about musicians but other types of artist (visual, etc) try and keep all their little secrets to themselves. It really is fascinating to watch one the best american rock guitarist from the 90s on explain his gear and the thoughts behind them.
Interviewer did an amazing job staying low key but getting J to share a plethora of information about how he gets his unique sound. Just great to hear about and learn about. I rapport, they kept it mellow but very informational and interesting to see how J does stuff and the way he thinks about things and how it comes together and creates this amazing unique sound that is always a joy to listen to
He's more cooperative in this interview than I have heard in others. If he gets annoyed he will pretty much just shut down and do one word answers, leaving a really awkward feeling for the person trying to interview him. I think the man is a genius.
The MASTER of minor and major scale leads. They're songs inside the song. Thanks for all the GREAT songs over the years J! You made me a better guitar player too.
Dude is def laid back! Interviews prob suck, but I'm sure he wanted to do it, prob fun to show his gear he's acquired over the years. It's nice to know someones cares.
I loved this. J is awesome, and live rig is the most amazing thing I've ever experienced at a live show.. Brutally loud, yet crystal clear at the same time.
pretty sure he made his signal to noise ratio. I saw them live a few years back, took me a couple hours to get my hearing back, the only concert I have ever been to where I wasn't right next to the stage, had to stick to the bar.
Pretty cool look into how he gets all those sounds, dropping stuff to be lower than the bigmuff so that that is loudest is pretty clever trick too I thought.
J is one of the most laid back talented songwriters of all time. He doesn't act like a douche, he just acts like himself. Dinosaur Jr. is one of the best bands of all time! Love the new album!
Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein and J.Mascis I like both of their rig rundowns because that are not out to impress . They are who they are . John 5 is awesome to
J IS JUST A STRANGE PERSON. He clearly cares about the interview, this video goes for 35 minutes. I also met him, I was with a friend and we were getting a record signed. We were like 'HI J' and he was like '.....' and we gave him the record. He wrote "JM" at the top right in this really squeaky marker pen - the only sound was the ceiling fans and the pen squeaking. We then thanked him and left. It was the most underwhelming experience I've ever had, though it was also quintessentially J Mascis.
" I usually blow up a lot of tubes"..haha. He is probably not stoned. That's just his personality. I've talked to him person before and watched many interviews.
ball busting aside, I LOVE J. Mascis...I mean LOVE him. He was my spiritual guru throughout the late 80's and early 90's. My Bloody Valentine would not exist without them. Sh*tty guitarist like myself would not exist without him. EHX would not be a company today without J. Mascis. His droll recounts of things that have happened are f'ing hilarious. I can't wait for his Fort Apache/SST narrative.
What an amazing rig...He knows what he likes. J's tone is and always has been fantastic, clean or distorted. He must be a Rory fan...the tone bender reference and I think his son is named Rory. The action on his guitar is proof that you don't need the strings hugging the neck to play great lead. I don't usually watch this kind of thing, but this was a joy. Thanks for all the great music J. Keep doing what you are doing and the world will be a better place.
"I am playing considently a bit quiter .... Thats what my clean sound which is the real tube .... would be destorded to some people ...... but its really clean to me." J Mascis is great, he is a true Rocker from the heart and not faking a thing.
Good Lord!!! "I like the action pretty high" is quite the understatement! I could slip my little finger under those strings at the 21st fret. He must have hands like a gorilla.
loved his comment about studio work; "My sound is like.. rhythm is p-90 and deluxe, and lead is tele thru the vox" ^^^those are some good words right there^^^ thanks for another rundown - these are some of the best videos on youtube.
Like his choice in pedals. I'm big fan of all the vintage electro-harmonix stuff. Just got an electro-harmonix holy grail reverb for Xmas. Thing is amazing! Also big Fender guy myself.Use to be all about fancy Jackson's, ESP etc... but as I got better I started playing fenders. Tele's mostly with Vox and old Randall amps. Nice interview!
Fenvox79 I've been struggling to get the action on my jazzmaster to an acceptable height - and I like relatively high action - but my god, that looked like it was an inch off the fretboard at the 12th fret. Props to him for being able to play anything at all.
santos0x No kidding man! Reminds me of those terrible, old Japanese made guitars. Teisco is one brand. Every time I'd come across one the action would be SO high. I wouldnt spend a dollar on one! But I agree, its amazing how good he sounds with a height like that! I'd think the the note would go sharp before he even hits the frets! He also uses a Capo a lot of times, and thats probably the only time it would feel good to the rest of us.
He sounds like he's going to fade at 2:10. When I saw Dino Jr in 1996, the only interaction J had with the audience was a "Wutsup?" between the 13 & 14th songs as he tuned his guitar. It was perfect for him.
Wow his action is brutal. A little bit higher than my action.. My strat I bought new in 1995. Its a 1994 Anniversary model with the goofy american flag badge.. Anyway, I played the guitar live regularly 3 times a week for years and years as well as just bedroom playing and practicing.. The frets are grooved and flat and very sharp in places.. I don't think the action has EVER been adjusted.. I just played it.. and as the action increased over the years I just adjusted to the guitar.. Its great for vibrato.. But sometimes when bending your fingers get stuck under adjacent strings.. Now I'm gassing for a Jazzmaster.. This video also has me missing my 1972 Hiwatt DR103.. :(
i don't know about straight edge, but he is strange. every time i've seen dino jr. play, J would rarely talk with the fans. it wasn't a dick move, he's just super shy and really awkward. the man is a genius, though. an absolute genius. i love dino jr., man. the pairing of lou and jay is one that has transcended generations.
I really do admire J Mascis. He's a bit like Zappa I think. Doesn't use any drugs yet everybody assumes that he does and he creates amazing music and is a very nice, if a little awkward, fellow.
I mascis put out a GREAT album a few years back called "Seven shades of why".......Just a beautiful arrangement.....And YES im pretty critical of music TODAY..Most of it Sucks bad...Quality went into that piece J.
The greats are often misunderstood, I know this is a cliche statement but it is so because it is true. Let the haters hate, I doubt it really affects J. His music, guitar playing, and lyrics are what speaks to the soul. His social awkwardness is why so many of his fans can relate to him, and feel the emotion through the music.
Jay is certainly the greatest guitarists on the late 80's as he ushered in the 90's grunge . I saw them @ Roxy with Murph and pal Lew BarloW in 1989 The sound system was on 11 And the entire PA and the drums had a set of mics. a show that reduced me to tears from simply gorgeous hyper amplification. He was NO DOUBT the greatest contemporary true rock guitarist on the planet. at that time.
You guys need to invest in some better mics. It's annoying to have a handheld stuck in your face and to have to go back and forth with the one mic between two people.
It could still be intonated based on how the neck, nut, and bridge height are set. The action being so high, it doesn't seem that unusual to have the saddles set back so far, even all in a row. The neck's truss rod could be adjusted to compensate if the intonation is a bit off.
J needs to calm the hell down
Logan Edwards I agree. He is being WAY to aggressive here.
Hack.
Logan Edwards he's mad , because in another life , he said , " ...hey? "
...to a cat for scratching his eyes out .
More overused than any knock knock joke
Lol
J clearly loves talking about his gear. He's pretty fired up here.
STFU
+Philip Taylor What's the problem?
+Philip Taylor - you're hard!
Jay. Thats bloody hilarious 🙂😊🙂
IKR? I wish he would stop talking and give the interviewer a chance to speak.
A true legend, totally chilled just into his gear and playing, really meant alot that he made some time for me.
that's pretty cool.
CASKET INDUSTRIES
That must have been great, thanks for sharing.
You can tell he's into his gear!...he knows what he's on about. - This added the fact that he is one of the best guitarists of all time!...impressive.
Ease up guys, he feels the pain of everyone.
And then he feels nothing
Chicken nugget
Haha
Exactly!!
J Mascis sounds like an old sad Chris Griffin.
lmaooooooo
looks like him too
***** That's really just how he talks.
+Saint Louis Toneworks just like you overlooked your use of "of" in "should of" instead of using "have" you may be overlooking something and assuming too much. Where did you read that he didn't wanna do the interview? Hearing that he doesn't use jazzmasters and marshalls in the studio is like finding out there's no santa clause.
I wonder what he uses for tremelo. I love how he uses his JM tremelo.
Its almost like the Jimmy page telecaster thing
Part of growing up is realizing that everyone uses telecasters in the studio
The original 3 albums are all JM and Marshalls.
He doesn't use Big muffs on the studio either hahaja
Tip: turn the speed up to 1.25 and J starts talking at a normal speed.
Ohh, you're the best! lol Thank you!
yobhsiFehT Haha, no problem man!
so good.
S. A. Muchos gracias.
I dunno, still sounds a bit slow
This guy is a really good interviewer. He gets J to engage then gives him the room to talk. He isn't uncomfortable. Really interesting piece.
Its funny hearing everybody saying he sounds stoned, not enthused etc, etc. Obviously havent heard any interviews in the 90's where he would be so bored with the questions that he wouldnt even reply. J actually has come out of his shell over the years.
^ +1 ^^~
The funny thing is J is straight edge.

@@Frigoni It’s pretty well documented that that’s the case
My favorite ASMR video of all time!
I though i was the only one experiencing it haha

Good god action on his guitars is higher than he sounds
It's insane how high that is. I don't know how it's even playable.

This is like God running you through a detailed description of how he made the earth in seven days.

Pretty much

What about a career in politics?
J Mascis for Town Supervisor or some shit haha
This episode has helped cure my insomnia! Thanks PG!!
I think Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein and J.Mascis need to do a sitcom together.
Hahahha
"J how are you doing" "good" "thanks so much for joining us" "alright"
this video is good if you're having a panic attack.
His action haunts me, it makes me feel so uncomfortable, it's literally 5 times higher than it should be. I feel sick.
"This is my clean sound..wich is the real tube.. wich I..you know...I guess wolud.. be distorted for some people... but its...really clean.. to me.. y..you know...for me"

This
Myself, I also love The Edge, though! So they should've just added J, too! 😀
J or John Frusciante would have made such a better part than The Edge
J Mascis used to be socially awkward. He still is, but he used to be, too.
Does anyone else like to watch J-related things at 1.25 speed? He sounds normal and everyone else sounds like 3 shots of espresso!
Maybe J isn't the most talkative guy, but he tries. I like his sincere answers. He's not a kiss ass. He can blow all of you haters out of the water with his guitar playing, but he isn't bragging about it. He's a laid back guy and is a master of his craft! Long live J Mascis!

10 mins. worth of run-down over 35 mins. Only J can pull this off

I rapport, they kept it mellow but very informational and interesting to see how J does stuff and the way he thinks about things and how it comes together and creates this amazing unique sound that is always a joy to listen to
He sounds really excited about his setup.
J. would make the most perfect animated character voice. It'd be awesome if he had a cameo on Bob's Burger.
He's more cooperative in this interview than I have heard in others. If he gets annoyed he will pretty much just shut down and do one word answers, leaving a really awkward feeling for the person trying to interview him. I think the man is a genius.

Wow, now I am off to go listen to some D Jr music. Glad this was up loaded Thanks!
I didn't know J actually had a sense of humor. Really good rundown. His action is insane!
I loved this. J is awesome, and live rig is the most amazing thing I've ever experienced at a live show.. Brutally loud, yet crystal clear at the same time.
"Heres my double fuzz setting..." "*crackcrackle*" (150dB noise floor...)
pretty sure he made his signal to noise ratio. I saw them live a few years back, took me a couple hours to get my hearing back, the only concert I have ever been to where I wasn't right next to the stage, had to stick to the bar.
1:35 perfect intonation...
omg lol
Haha surely they're adjusting it? He said it was his number one?
Talk about enthusiasm!
I've been listening to J talk about his rig for the last 9 years and I can't wait until we get to the pedalboard
Everyone else is talking about J's laid back personality but I'm just in aw of his fucking string action, what a goddamn monster
If u listen to this with headphones you can actually hear J whisper some things
Steven Wright plays guitar?
Anyone catch the hole in the side of the Hiwatt head for a cooling fan? Alex Lifeson's Hiwatts (used live 77-81) had those exact holes too. Hmmm???
Pretty cool look into how he gets all those sounds, dropping stuff to be lower than the bigmuff so that that is loudest is pretty clever trick too I thought.
He's so chill I think it's cool

J always set action very high. He once said in an interview "For my guitars, never too high, only too low".
i cant get over how hi his action is. never woulda thought,
hi action and jumbo frets, and the way he plays is so awesome,
this made my day. J is speaking through his nose, the mouth movement is just for show. He's actually making me drowsy
I'm thinking he's stoned, hungover and caught the grippe all at once
J is actually straight edge lol

"Yep, I did that."

I had no clue Steven Wright had a band!
Oh my god his action is so high

J Mascis is great, he is a true Rocker from the heart and not faking a thing.
23:21 Almost Fare recognized it right away!
They forgot to review the ladder he brings on tour to play that 16ft action on those guitars.
Good Lord!!! "I like the action pretty high" is quite the understatement! I could slip my little finger under those strings at the 21st fret. He must have hands like a gorilla.
loved his comment about studio work;
"My sound is like.. rhythm is p-90 and deluxe, and lead is tele thru the vox"
^^^those are some good words right there^^^
thanks for another rundown - these are some of the best videos on youtube.

Also big Fender guy myself.Use to be all about fancy Jackson's, ESP etc... but as I got better I started playing fenders. Tele's mostly with Vox and old Randall amps. Nice interview!
Damn, that is the highest non-slide action I've ever seen. His hands must be strong AF.
Man, the string height on his Jazzmaster's is insane!! Way up there!
Sorry his "action" is high!
Fenvox79 I've been struggling to get the action on my jazzmaster to an acceptable height - and I like relatively high action - but my god, that looked like it was an inch off the fretboard at the 12th fret. Props to him for being able to play anything at all.

Every interview with J seems so brutal. I imagine after every interview the interviewer is just like thank god that's over.
I recently read an article where the author writes that doing an interview with J Mascis is like interviewing paint on how it feels to dry
He is having fun
He sounds like he's going to fade at 2:10. When I saw Dino Jr in 1996, the only interaction J had with the audience was a "Wutsup?" between the 13 & 14th songs as he tuned his guitar. It was perfect for him.
"Calm the f' down J!" I love you J Mascis...but Eyore called and wants his vibe back.

J was so hyped to be there. You can see it in his eyes.
i don't know about straight edge, but he is strange. every time i've seen dino jr. play, J would rarely talk with the fans. it wasn't a dick move, he's just super shy and really awkward. the man is a genius, though. an absolute genius. i love dino jr., man. the pairing of lou and jay is one that has transcended generations.
I really do admire J Mascis.
He's a bit like Zappa I think. Doesn't use any drugs yet everybody assumes that he does and he creates amazing music and is a very nice, if a little awkward, fellow.
Took me 3 days to finish watching this. Fell asleep everytime.
I mascis put out a GREAT album a few years back called "Seven shades of why".......Just a beautiful arrangement.....And YES im pretty critical of music TODAY..Most of it Sucks bad...Quality went into that piece J.
I met J one day in Athens, Ga. I was getting my guitar repaired when J Mascis and Dave Schools (WSP) walked in. Was pretty cool.

His music, guitar playing, and lyrics are what speaks to the soul. His social awkwardness is why so many of his fans can relate to him, and feel the emotion through the music.
do the locust rig rundown!
Finally a whole rig rundown worth watching. At least for me... And Corgan's rig, that was worth watching too.

Props to Shawn for keeping the interview moving.
I'd like to see J and Mike Ness of Social Distortion interview each other 😂
J is a great player. I was unaware of all these weird details. That high action is freaky.
it gives me nightmares
You guys need to invest in some better mics. It's annoying to have a handheld stuck in your face and to have to go back and forth with the one mic between two people.

yikes that action is ridiculously high.
In my opinion that action is pretty low...
J always stated in interviews that he likes high action, hard to play guitars.
I love J's mellow run down.
Sean Hammond you're my hero! I've met J and he's by a country mile the hardest cat to get talking.
I want to get this guy as caffeinated as possible and see what happens
I love how awkward J is in every interview he does! The interviewers never know what to do XD
