During the Tera Melos’ tour supporting their just-released EP Treasures and Trolls, ringleader guitarist/vocalist Nick Reinhart took some time at Nashville’s High Watt to hang with PG’s Chris Kies and go through his pawnshop setup.
Nick Reinhart has been “freakishly obsessed” with the weird and slightly off side of gear. Case in point, this is his go-to guitar, a ’90s Squier Vista Series Super-Sonic that was made in Japan while the humbuckers were wired in South Korea. All of its visual quirks are stock, but Reinhart did equip this particular offset with a Roland GK-2A Divided MIDI Synth Pickup that essentially turns the 6-string into a MIDI controller reproducing everything from horns to drums.
This ’93 MIJ Fender Jazzmaster actually was originally owned by EarthQuaker Devices’ founder Jamie Stillman. Nick Reinhart watched Jamie trade for the guitar at Santa Monica’s Truetone Music and told the pedal maker that if Stillman ever wanted to sell the guitar that he would take it. Last year a fan tweeted a link to Nick for a Reverb listing (complete with a video of Reinhart demoing the guitar at EarthQuaker Day) of this very Jazzmaster and he messaged Jamie who pulled the sale and sold it to his friend.

"DD-3 for just a classic delay sound" *BWAAAAAAA*
Pretty sure this dude has his "Fucks Given" knob superglued at "zero".
@@christianfriisjensen2055 he welded it
"Some would say that's cheating"
"ABSOLUTELY!"
Self-oscillation has been a thing pretty much since the first analog delays, so in that regard it's totally a classic delay sound.
DD-3 is the shit.
“Are you ever not smiling when you play this stuff?” That question pretty much hit the nail on the head for one of the big reasons Nick and his unique approach to weird sounds is so admirable to me. Just having fun dorking around just ‘cause!
This dude should be a spokesperson for the Not Having Enough Money For A Blunt But Somehow Enough For Two Tall Cans Of Arizona society.
Every year this is a rewatchie
really fun tour, thanks for everything nick.
- "you're well aware of this and you're fine going forward"
- "yup"
the premise sounds like if he was going to say he has cancer or something lol... never clicked so fast on a new rig rundown video. awesome!
Qué onda Pepis
El Tío Pepis
Sobrinos!
"I have the DD-3 for, ya know, like a classic delay sound"
*engages pedal*
BWEHHHHHAFBKAFHBJKJBKAHFGAKFGJAKFGJAKFGJAG
I knew something was up when the level and feedback were all the way up
I swear we all played Team Fortress 2 with this guy online
Yup
I swear I’ve heard him I’m a voice chat, could be wrong..
We all need a friend like Nick. Seems like such a cool dude
This guy is awesome. I am going to bet on him when he is going to fight Joe Bonamassa in the thunderdome.
Is he being lip-sync'd by Seth Rogen?
He'll probably superglue something to his fists, giving him the advantage
he watched this rundown and wished he could be this loose and have fun
@@mj_dj joe is putting grolsch rings on knucles also
not getting all this joe b vs nick stuff can someone explain it lol
only thing i can think of is joe called pedal users lazy and nick loves pedals
Fastest 36 minutes ever. Such a fun rig rundown
This guy is just a complete dingdong and I love him so much.
What type of wood is the pedal board and how much does it effect the tone of the pedals?
The sad thing is at first I thought this wasn’t a joke 😂
This is much more fun than the typical middle-aged blues guy....Nick is a genius!
Yeah I'm actually curious about how he gets his tone
that's.... one of the most inspiring 30 mins I spent on UA-cam. Both Nick and Juan are incredibly inventive with noise boxes.
Best rig rundown ever. This guy is a genius and fuckin hilarious. Thanks PG!
I love that he is dressed like Todd from Bojack Horseman.
Haha!
being indie was a thing in the real world, way before that show, actually more than 20 years ago.
imslicc Yeah I know, it was a joke. Because of the yellow hat.
And his voice sounds like Bojack at some point
So, I’m 8:00 minutes into this Rig Rundown and I KNOW it is going to be the best one I’ve seen of these. This is the most honest, down to earth, humble and innovative guitarist you’ve got on the show for sure. So thrilled to see the rest.
Nick's stuff makes me run for a guitar more than anyone else at them moment! Love it
I love Nick's overdrive tone with the boost and the JCM800! Sounds killer
Man.. he should get the Orange Rocker 32..fuckin 2 x10 combo it works in stereo and has killer OD tones...pretty sure Omar from Mars Volta used one.
His slap delay reminds me so much of Robert Fripp in early King Crimson..knowing how big of a King Crimson fan Nick is....
probably the coolest rig rundown ever ! the knob thing killed me :D
pedal kings, the most underrated guitarist
This guy is on my wavelength. Exact opposite of your standard gear snob.
Chris is becoming a great interviewer. The question at 6:13 was friggen awesome
Nick is such an awesome dude and a seriously inspiring player. Such a cool guy. Loved this one!
By far one of my favorite modern guitarist
This may be my favorite rundown. God he’s hilarious.
Excellent stuff! Nick is the best.
Might be the best rig rundown ever. Simply amazing.
ive nothing but gratitude for this. thank you!
Awesome, been waiting for this and it didn't disappoint! Such a likeable guy, having fun with pedals for a living. Right on.
Brilliant! You never want this video to end!
One of the best Rig Rundowns ever and very inspiring thanks :-)
I'm the guy who let nick know jamie was selling it
King shit m8
No one cares
Good looking out, dude. Jamie was a dick for that.
@@ajackson5955 how? i don't think Nick and Jamie are like super close friends or anything like that
@@TinkerToneworks I would understand if Jamie sold it to a close friend, but if I remember correctly, the guitar in question was spotted being sold on Reverb. If a casual acquaintance of mine asked for dibs on a guitar if I ever sold it, I’d give them a call before I listed it on the internet. That’s just good manners.
Best rig rundown ever! Nick and Tera Melos are so rad
So amazingly informative, it leaves most rig rundowns WAY in da dust!
That was great, he is an absolute riot! Thank you guys and Happy New Year!
love LOVE nick reinhart
This was awesome!!! He's like a mad scientist of sound -love it!!!! 😍
Didn't even know he had a UA-cam channel!!!! That makes me love this band even more! He is so nice
I thought this sounded terrible but the band is pretty cool after I checked it out to hear in context
Love this guy and his quirky sounds!
Wow just incredible! this is amazing .
Really fun and instructing. Love it !
That one was long overdue, great stuff!
I love his enthusiasm!
Same guitar as Omar used to play in ATDI before the Ibanez endorsement but his was a right hand guitar flipped upside down which is why the knobs are upside down but it looks a normal shape. Pointless Fact of the day
Omar actually had his pickguard modded to have the knobs on the right side (for him)
I love this guy gonna go listen to tera melos now because of this.
Much respect to a great guitarist for playing Squier guitars! Even though the street price for a Squier guitar/bass are significantly lower than a Fender MIA, MIJ, and MIM, they’re really great feeling/sounding instruments. My Squier 60’s Vibe Precision Bass is SIIIIICCCCKKKK!
Yeah it's unbelievable the bad rep Squier has. I have like 5 of them (Vintage Modified and Classic Vibe) and I adore them. A well set up Squier completely slays a stock Player (MIM) Fender.
*Plays incoherent mess
"whoops that wasnt supposed to happen..."
*Continues to play mess
Haha I actually heard him mess up and was satisfied when he got it right. It's not an incoherent mess!
HORRIBLE NOISE.
This guy is awesome. Just seems like such a fun dude
Most enjoyable RR ever - cheers gents.
If ever I'm in a rut with FX, I come back to this video; it's INSTANT GOOD VIBES
This is probably the best rundown
I never saw a rig rundown with the presenter laughing while the artist demo his stuff. Amazing. i laughed so hart too.
the POG feels like the most normal pedal he is using...damn
Best Rig Rundown ever!
Wait, Weezer's "Blue" album in a pedal? Sold, instantly sold.
This is also a secret Death Grips rig rundown if you think about it: those synth noises are SO bottomless pit sounding
RIGHT
thanks for sharing this band ! didnt knew them but not i really like them!
Only a true man can play the little mermaid song on guitar. #dadlyfe
15:27 *DEATH GRIPS INTENSIFIES*
Death Grips is Online
thanks a lot !! It's Christmas when I see this video 🤩🤩🤩🐴🤩🤩🤩
KT88s in a JCM800... Billy Corgan style.
Kerry Fuckin' King!
@Schmoolie Deninostein Your voice sounds weird coming out of your ass like that
the most interesting rig out there .
I love the Rig Rundowns where musicians actually play their gear and use them in interesting ways. Seems like such a waste for people to just talk about it
This dude makes great questions
29:47 "It's tuned to E" DDLEHDAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUCCHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
This was super fun.
So good. I keep coming back to this one and Nels Cline's EQD 'Board to Death' pinnacle examples of the genre. Ava Mendoza next please though!
Apparently, I need to up my game on toe accuracy. Thank you for the cool content.
On my 300th viewing of the part where Nick hits that harmonic at 17:32 and cracks everyone up.
My 98 squier Super-Sonic is one of my most cherished possessions!
Just love this guy, absolutely awesome !!! 😻🎸👌🔥🔥🔥
best rig rundown ever!
Dude is a genius that’s a killer setup
Great RR !! One Note: the GK pickups are NOT MIDI....they are "hex" or hexaphonic in nature. They pickup SIX signals, one per string. they send these six DISCRETE signals down the 13-pin cable to the device at the other end (several GR-series, VG-series, GP-10, OC20G and a few other devices).
There is NO MIDI INVOLVED in most of those endpoint devices UNLESS you engage their "MIDI OUT" function, to drive/control another synth or FX device. The hex pickup, and the 13-pin, is the conduit for AUDIO, not data.
The 13-pin protocol is the six separate strings/audio, the regular guitar signal (all 6 strings together, as in 'time immemorial electric guitar out'), the other wires are for synth control, volume, phantom power etc.
Just wanted to clarify that since I meet people ALL the time who get these and are then confused that they CAN'T PLUG RIGHT INTO MIDI 5-pin DIN etc.
Otherwise -- awesome informative and fun Rundown! Carry on......
Yes!
this is the most unpredictable rig rundown i’ve ever seen
Heroic.
Nick is such a personality
Nick is the man!
17:32 Palm?
Fuckin awesome guy!!
Very positive and inspiring!
I like his approach to gear and music, and it's because of Nick i love pedals!
Most interesting gear video on the internet. The man is amazing, very clever and creative!
goals
FINALLY!
Stellar episode
best rig runner yet.
Chris's face at 14:15 is brilliant!
I love this dude....so rad...
What a racket! We Are Millwall!!!
Super glue really is hilarious though.
I love how off the wall this guy is.
Also, Jamie Stilman is a rad guy. Met him at namm once.
Ps. That midi line switcher thing is genius.
who else started laughing out loud at 12:04? Because I sure as hell did. That's so awesome.
Wow ...cool ...one very talented man and great fun
Yeah. Chris is talented.
Love this dude.
so cool!
