The look on his face when he says "Nothing on the record is a big muff or jazzmaster" is the best part of this video.
Shhh 🤫 let more peeps buy into jazzmasters
So what does he use in the studio??
@@asheriko26 he said he usually uses his Tele for leads, rhythm he brought out a whole bunch of guitars for
@@denjibones1098 Do you think he uses the tele's bridge or rhythm pickup for leads?
@@itimoldenburg looks like he uses the bridge pickup, since he says the neck is out of phase and it looks like its already set to bridge at 3:18
I love how he's just bonking all of the guitars every time he pulls another one out of the rack haha. J is the man.
“Buy high, sell low.”
Wise words.
Is it just me, or is J getting more talkative as these videos go on? Love to see it
Yeah he is way more into it in this video for sure. I mean he even laughed and smiled at some point!
Edibles
fastest I've ever heard him talk
Thought that too. I'm glad he is
He's totally become more comfortable with his position in the world.
I've watched probably every J Mascis interview on the internet, and this is probably the most joyful he has come across. Love to see it!
His Marc Maron interview was pretty great!
He seems rlly uninterested wdym
@@JJ-xt2dq no way for a J Mascis interview this is really good
@@creekandseminole it seems to me that that just means hes a pretty annoying person
@@JJ-xt2dq your perception sucks then
The guy who made guitar solos cool again amongst indie bands. What a legend.
@@chrise.3814 There's definitely solos in a lot of grunge music from back then
@@creekandseminoleyeah most of the late 80s and early 90s grungy shit had solos, J was just the only one to be super indulgent with it in the best way possible
J is the guy that made me want to play the guitar. I saw a picture of him in Transworld Skateboarding in 1989 playing his original Jazzmaster. I thought “that’s the guitar that makes THAT sound, that’s what I want to play.” 33 years later I still play Jazzmasters & still love J’s playing.
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

.. Only to find out 33 years later that he doesn't and didn't use the jazzmaster for most of the stuff you heard
@@27needles1 he's probably trolling a bit tbh. He definetely uses jazzmasters on albums, and it's his main instrument live so...
I saw him there first too!!!
@@DelScully it opens up a can of worms for sure!!! But Lords knows we've seen him play the Jazzmaster live many many times
I love how he carelessly clanks his extremely expensive guitars against each other when he pulls them off the stands.
They're just instruments, not fine china
soooo punk 😂😂😂😂 cringe
The way it should be
Well i guess he doesn’t plan to sell them.. 😂
If you're J Mascis, that's called "adding patina".
I can never get over how strange it is now to have such access to artists, back when I was teenager listening to all these bands there was definitely an added layer of enigma, quite often you didn’t even know what the people in the bands actually looked like, go back through all those dinosaur albums and I don’t think there was even a picture of them in there. Unless you were lucky enough to see them live, and there will be many places around the world buying the CD’s that they have probably never visited, or went out of your way to pick up one of the few publications at the time that were even covering them.
I always loved J’s playing, he was one of the few guitarists who’s solo’s seemed to tell their own story, instead of mindlessly going for the note count record he always delivered a solo with its own melody.
They put out music videos too, once again another maybe your loucky to see things. I also remember being a teenager and buying Nirvana Bootleg videos out the back of a magazines just to have a shot at what seeing a show was like.
This man snuck shredding into the scene behind our backs and we loved him for it.
J single-handedly saved guitar from itself.
@@daytrippingcalifornia3270 the way he handles them guitars... He's a relicing machine.
I love it when he knocks that 59 right into some other guitars!!!
Outstanding, can we have a 90 min version of exactly the same? He appears more "charismatic" than he used to, maybe age suits him. Always a favourite and suspect he will go down as one of the most influential of the generation. Yes I am a fanboy!
The mascis signature squire jazzmaster is a absolute gem.
it totally is!
i had one with a rosewood neck... biggest mistake was selling it when i moved couple months ago. it sounds amazing. nothing needed changing on it. ive had all sorts of guitars over the last 15 years of my playing (im currently 27) i prefer it over american made fenders and gibsons that ive owned. there was something special about the one i got (im a big believer that no two guitars are the same) but yeah some word of advice for any gear snob out there, don't knock all the squires. some can be amazing.
what's that, 60-something?
yeah, something.
J has been in my top 10 guitarists for nearly 30 years. He’s an enigmatic, brilliant player with such incredible bite and touch at the same time. Never change, maestro. Never change. Massive thanks from Scotland.
He sounds like 14yr old me in my bedroom
@@midnite_in_november and yet he makes it work? Isn't the whole point to capture the idealism and ambition of being 14 you know?
@@midnite_in_november J was 21 when Dino's 2nd and probably best album was recorded. If there are any 14 year olds you're aware of who have such a clearly distinct style, sound & overall aesthetic then I'd love to hear them play.
Edit- oh wait, you said a 14 year old you... in that case you've gotta be pretty damn good by now!
@@ioncewasmikey 🥺
@@midnite_in_november hey, I didn't mean anything by that, sorry. Now that I think of it I actually started playing guitar at 14... didn't sound like J lol. But there have since been a few times in my life where I haven't picked it up for years at a time, and I'll think sometimes of where I could be with it now if only I'd never put it down. So I know it's easy to get down on yourself over that kind of thing. So if I struck a nerve I apologize, but just know you're not alone in that feeling. And if I misinterpreted your single emoji response then... sorry about that too lol
I love how J doesn't really GAF about impressing people & it impressed the hell out of most people. How he shrugs off how amazing "Where You Been" & "Without A Sound" were (almost solo efforts tbh), constantly pans the sound of Green Mind + really just doesn't give a sh*t what others think YET his music is incredible. The early stuff, the Sire years, the after albums. The Fog stuff, solo stuff, all of it. J just being J. He's real, man. He's just real.
“Hardly ever a Jazzmaster or a Big Muff on any studio recording.”
WHAT
I still recall the first time I head Dinosaur Jr. My brother said, "You gotta listen to this guy, he's a genius." REALLY? I was turned off. But, I heard Start Choppin and said, "Yeah, genius, I'm in!" That was 93. I've been obsessed with the music since.
Due to this obsession, I miss bands a lot. I'm always 5 years behind. I discover new bands, and they have been broken up for a long time. But, I got J!!
i remember the day my cousin came over and brought a handfull of CDs he just got. put in where you been because the art was so cool and that intro to out there had me instantly captivated. start choppin comes on and i fell in love.
Where you been was such an amazing record hearing j play the not the same riff opened up some old memories
I want this to be an ongoing series each week, with J eventually showing all of his gear. So many more guitars there, plus amps, pedals, drums etc.
This was such an enjoyable watch.
J Mascis has one of the most enjoyable personalities of any artist I know, always slow talking, often socially awkward in a casual and humorous way and always into talking about the music.
Fan since the '80s. Freaking J' should have a podcast where he reads children's books. Imagine "Where the Wild Things Are" in his classic voice.
This is the first person I've ever heard mention a groove tubes preamp. An obscure practice space my band used to play at had one of their preamps instead of a classic bass amp. I got the most glorious bass tones out of it and then I never saw it again
This is the only interview of him where he doesn't look like a sad puppy, lol. Love his guitar tone, this video explains a lot. Dinosaur JR are a genre on their own.
“Love his guitar tone”. …. Seriously? It must be an acquired taste.
@@markeythesharkey6153Trust me as a Dinosaur fan it took a while. I used to not be able to listen to the album because of how crazily fuzzed out it was
I'm a simple man, I see J Mascis, I click.
Shoutout Greg Sage, I think he's still around in Phoenix, he deserves a documentary.
10:05 ; "What's that ? '60 something ?"
J : "Yeah, something..."
THat's why I dig this man ; He's enjoying his guitar. Nothing more.
As a super J Mascis fan I love videos like this. It had new stories about J’s gear which is always great. I know that’s why you do it, so thanks!!!
Love hearing J talking about music stuff and showing his collection. I love how he pulls them out of the rack and you hear them smacking other guitars on the way out. Awesome!
This is how I want my retirement to be, loads of gear, just rocking out doing whatever I want without deadlines, or briefs to meet…. Bliss
Awesome, saw Dinosaur Jr in Manchester England 2 weeks ago.. they were just incredible..incredible
Man, a video of Mr. Mascis going through his muff/ehx collection and just showing off some of his favourites would be so rad. I don't think a radder video could exist. This was stellar though. Love hearing J talk about gear and music. My guitar hero.
J Mascis is me on those rare days when I decide to throw my brain a changeup and go without coffee
Wait no Muffs or JM's on recordings? no way....that cant be 100% true out of all the years and albums. J says it himself @6:21 the big muffs the hardest to replace, yet every studio recording has replaced it from what he said early on? Nah. Also this has to be the most energetic Ive ever seen J in a interview. He just bashes his guitars around too....Hes a national treasure.
He didn't have as much gear in the early days so I assume everything you hear on the first two records has got to be his first Jazzmaster (he sold it to a museum) and a Big Muff Deluxe
@@void0094 probably Bug too, I'd guess? Just by the way it sounds, idk though.
Was surprised to hear that as well.
@@andrewmusslewhite5445after without a sound he mostly used his blue tele
Yeah I think he's referring to their more recent stuff. Debut, YLAOM and Bug are 100% JM and big muff.
I love My J Mascis Squier Jazzmaster. Most comfortable neck ive ever played.
my great-grandfather saw dinosaur play in the cafeteria at his college in Amherst.
As a lifelong j mascis/dinosaur Jr fan, I love how punk rock j is! The fact that he made an affordable model in the price range of when he first started buying guitars is so fukin awesome! And shows that he truly cares about his fans and fanbase and the pockets of young kids and struggling parents! We need more dudes like j to teach the youth!
This is wonderful.. and if, as folks have said, J did one of these a week I'd tune in religously. J's humour is bone dry.. love it. Amazing. Thankyou Reverb!
J has been my.guitar hero for years now..my fav bands as a kid in the early 80s was acdc and thin lizzy ..it's cool he bought the same guitar as Scott Gorham...I bought a jazzmaster years ago cos of j Mascis...Great to see j get the recognition after all these years ..he's really found his place these last few years ..Great that fender helped him out
Thanks for all the amazing music J.
What a legend he his! Good to see him smile, laugh and be chatty! #LEGEND
Get him going and you can't shut him up. :) I live not far from J. See him around town quite a bit. Just a regular dude, really.
Usually I would quip sarcastically at J's enthusiasm but he is actually pretty jazzed in this video!
He definitely lights up when he starts talkin about his guitars….great stuff.
I could watch J talk for hours.
This interview is incredible. J's collection is outta control.
Went to go see Dinosaur Jr. in 91’ & had been dying to see them forever by that time. There was an opener called My Bloody Valentine: we dropped our window panes as we exited the car…we were 17. MBV gave us a legitimate religious experience because we were all suspended above the stage falling on top of each other; it was so loud that combined with the quad dipped pane my friend actually shit his pants ALONG with getting toilet paper STUCK DEEP in his ear canal! You never heard a loud show like this in your life trust me! When they finished the whole sold out crowd left the building!! We were all so blown apart we thought it was time to go because we had gone and lived 100 lifetimes in that set!!! The owner came out side with a bullhorn, “Dinosaur’s taking the stage GTF BACK IN HERE”; DING LIGHT BULBS WENT OFF!’ 1000 kids turned around started filing BACK INTO BEACHUM THEATRE; this was in O town!! OMG Jay topped MBV for everything I couldn’t believe it. The best two bands I ever seen live and I seen em all including Kurt. Cheers J!
Phucking love jay. Classic. Met him in Santa Cruz. Hands down one of the coolest / humble guys I’ve ever met. Even bought his signature squire jazzmaster. One of the best “budget” / guitars I own.
Did you see him at The Catalyst?
@@IAgreeLetsGoBrandon yup. & the next night @ the Rio. Was amazing.
Great stuff. I love how J talks just like he sings; super mellow and Steven Wright like. He has to have the lowest blood pressure of all the famous “grunge” guitar players.
Also, Lake Placid Blue is my favorite guitar color…man, that LPB Jazzmaster is sooooo cool!
I'm glad you used quotes around the 'G' word. Never ever use that word. J is a punk.
@@daytrippingcalifornia3270He played for gg alin for christs sake
Great video. Saw them in Cologne a couple of days ago and his solos were amazing
Omg i so glad, j has opened up so much i love to see him talk about the things he enjoys
J is my favourite guitar collector. I'm speculating but it seems to do it not purely for the money, he just loves guitar and doesn't base them on value. I'm sure he sells some but he genuinely loves guitar and it's what it means for him to be able to play it. Playing the guitars and giving them love makes them more meaningful than valuable.
Best J interview! Could listen to him all day
I never realized how Hendrix like J is. Especially on the Strat. Go J!
Nels Cline wipes the Floor with J in the Hendrix Department. Take my word for it. Lifelong Fan of J.
Love that Jesus and Mary Chain shout out at 10:09
The first time I heard Dino Jr was on college radio in 1987-88. Still a fan. It’s great to hear the stories behind some of the guitars I’ve seen or heard all these years.
Love this…I used to go to Daddy’s Junky music and drool at some of that stuff around the same time..
Wow! I've never seen J so animated. Thanks, this was great.
I LOVE this video. J is the most relaxed and verbose that I've ever seen him. I believe that's because he is in his literal happy place.
No matter what he picks up or plugs in it still just sounds like J. Love it.
I saw dinosaur jr about a month or two ago in concert it was awesome
9:53 Not the same - is such a beautifully haunting song. I was hoping he'd play more of it here
Lol! I love J so much. Such a cool guy. Genius Guitar player. I think its so funny the way he just picks his guitars up with reckless abandon!!😂
J! these guitars are priceless!!❤️🩹
J. Mascis is a huge influence. Am I the only one blown away that he doesn't use Jazzmasters in the studio? Now I want to know his studio sound. The fact that I had a friend ask me to get that "J Mascis sound" for a song, and I used a Les Paul Jr through a Rat and he talks about those two pieces of gear cracks me up. Also used a Telecaster through a Ratt (high distortion for a fuzz tone) for the lead.
I heard he actually mostly uses LPs in the studio, and apparently that blue Tele, so you weren't far off lol.
@@ioncewasmikey He used to be strictly against humbuckers, so probably P90 Gibsons and Teles in the studio? I dont't recall seeing him with a humbucker guitar before this video, and even those are mini humbuckers that have a somewhat brighter tone.
@@ploukusa The pickups I'm not sure of, but I'd either read or heard in another interview he used Les Pauls on their records. I'm assuming the 90s records (edit- and the post-reunion albums), Where You Been & onward I'd guess just from sound. I think he's got an LP in the Start Choppin' video if I remember correctly.
@@ploukusa Hey I just checked that music video and he's playing the Jaguar from this video as well as an LP with p90s! Edit- lol and a Gretsch
@@ploukusa Sorry but I just remembered another little detail about his guitars. Before he started using Mastery stuff he'd put tune-o-matic bridges on his JMs... I think the Slimy Bob guitar had one on it when he got it & he developed a taste for them. Not really related to the topic we were discussing but there's another little connection to Gibson there.
Great to J so chipper... I think I saw him smile too!
I love how he doesn’t care about trends. Just creates them.
A very relaxed J here. God love him.
such a wild guy - his collection is very cool, I can never take him too seriously though haha. Definitely an alchemist of tone with his sweet fuzz sound mixed with tasteful whammy bar
I had no idea he used that SG jr on Out There, always loved that sound!
My favorite guitarist throws a Johnny Marr reference, my 2nd favorite. I know there’s technically better players, but J and Johnny are unique and suit my ear. We’ll, J makes my ears ring live anyway.
He's such a character. Everything in the world is an enigma and he doesn't need to know why, haha...
every time he shreds the captions read "applause"
Man... my first pedal ever was a Tube Driver (around '93/94) i didn't know the tube would go bad in it and when it died i gave it away.... then i got a Green Muff... which i sold for maybe $40... ah... the good old days
Ouch! I had a black Sovtech (reissue I guess, this was like 2004 when I got it) whose footswitch went bad & I pawned it while I was in college for some cash. I might have gotten $40 lol, I was sweating when dude at the shop tested it, but luckily (I guess) the footswitch engaged. Even a newer one like that has gone way up in price though. I loved that pedal, wish I'd never let it go.
J Mascis is one of the coolest but strangest guys. Love it!
His Doc cutting back the lithium dose has done wonders for him.
J Mascis rocking a 70's Stratocaster. Thought I'd seen it all!!!!
Love this interview with J.
I just saw them at the pageant in September, they were amazing to see in the flesh
That this man had a career playing guitar is proof that miracles can happen.
What do you mean?
Im with you Jay , I love the Blue Rick bass !...Also that 59' Jazzmaster !!...I love the color and what you've done to it ! Thanks !
what a inspiration...thank u J!
J is very nice and humble person. I am very sad that never had a chance to see DJ alive.
They're still touring and tickets aren't expensive. Go see em!
They play out all the time, I don't think they will ever stop. I saw them on the Bet on Sky tour and a few years ago I saw J solo at Neumos in Seattle, both were great. I just Googled it, they have a bunch of dates in all parts of the country coming up.
love how the pedals are just randomly thrown in piles on the shelf. lol
Oh my. Whips out Tonebender and knobs are pre-set to 10. Awesome.
As a J Mascis Fan, very cool ! Thanks 🙂
J just vibing and it’s making me smile
Love the Tele. Our local store has one
I used to share a practical space with mutual friends of Js in Boston. Always trippy to see his stack of Plexis, etc in the corner, next to a giant Green Mind placard. Played one show w him when he was touring w Cobra Verde. He turned me on to the Groundhogs. He’s a true head.
Shit dude how the years have flown by; still as good as ever he is.
I love this guitar channel !
imagine being his grandchild, the dream i want to live
I think "buy high, sell low" has a double meaning.
J Mascis is my spirit animal
Gotta love this guy
GUITAR GOD! And they were a 3-piece when I saw them.. so good!
They're almost always a 3 piece brother, aside from a short stint in the 90s. They're also still touring, original lineup, go see em again.
J is a living legend
He has always had a unique and highly interesting style of playing guitar
Wise investment advice here. J says he's no good at investing EXCEPT he's been investing in something he knows, that's the key. Even if your not trying to invest.
That guy has the coolest 😎 voice of all the 90s bands him river from Weezer Bono and Chris Cornell
*insert mandatory jokes about J only speaking as fast as 2 mph here
This is remarkably fast for J!
J Mascis is a righteous dude. The sportos, motorheads, geeks, bloods, wasteoids, dweebies--they all adore him.
The most I’ve ever seen him talk and be emotive 🤯
