  • My 7.3 is cranking slow. Seems like only one battery is pulling the load.

Good troubleshooting. Although those pulleys look rusted out to all hell, surprised they aren't chewing through the belt in short order.

Good to go, you mentioned the remaining poor negative battery terminal that 'must be replaced', so consider it done for "today", it will live until next Saturday when the Military Terminals arrive, and you do it up Brown. And that small #8 gauge wire, needs to be replaced, but you mentioned that already.

Yep. The smaller ground that went to the frame is removed and the larger one bolted to the proper ground location on the block. Both batteries are charging fine now and she spins a good bit faster as well.

If you have a welding supply store near ya, I've had good luck buying sections of big fat welding cable for cheap, they replace big long 50-100' welding leeds when they get a knick in the insulation for safety, so they cut them at the damaged spot and will usually sell you a funny length for cheap. The welding cable has many more, finer strands of wire, so it flows way more juice for same diameter, and is much more flexible, so easier to thread the needle through all the electrical and plumbing junk. I've "fixed" a bunch of "worn out" diesel trucks by just putting these honking big cables on, easier on the batteries, starter, glow plugs work better. Treat herself to a set, you won't regret it, hah.
I make my own copper cable ends from old copper pipe, that way I can make the hole in the end the size I want, just squeeze the end in a vice, drill a hole, and crimp or solder it on the cable.
If im stuck using those repair terminals, that just clamp on the cable, I find they stay way tighter and give me less trouble if I flip the top plate over, so it's like two nesting spoons, instead of two halves of a circle.
Great videos, keep them coming. Had to zip across the country to a funeral, but now getting my 2000 f550 buttoned up from it's injector cup job and turbo rebuild. Fingers crossed she'll fire up tomorrow.

All good ideas. I usually have welding cable on hand for the same reasons. Never thought about the copper pipe idea. That’s a good one.
Send me a clip of your 550 when ya get her running. I’d love to check it out. Bayoudieseltrucks@gmail.com

Actually I have used the copper pipe idea what I mad a magnetic ground attachment to clamp my ground lead to.

If yours are good (not damaged or stripped out) then just make sure they are tight. You will have to clean um up from time to time. They all weep a bit. You could relocate the ccv but if not done right can cause other problems worse than weeping boots. If ya need clamps I’d check out Pensacola diesel or riffraff

Hey Boss, I got a question, my project f550, it's so close to starting, maybe you can think of something I haven't. I tore it all apart this winter, did injector cups, shimmed injectors and biggy sized the solenoid drain holes, rebuilt the turbo, did exhaust back pressure delete pedestal, new under valve cover wire harnesses. She cranks fast and even, my check engine light comes on then goes off, so I think that means all my electronicals are happy right? I stopped getting a wait to start light, but it's been warner here in Vermont lately, hit 70° today, so hopefully just that? So the problem is crank and almost start. Will sputter at least once on a 10sec crank, every time. No check engine light, and I had good hpop pressure before injector cups, my OBD2 connector is acting up so I can't recheck. Big hole on top of tank that fuel pickup and return go to was unbolted when I got it, so I dropped it, and have both pickup and return lines dunked in a Gerry can of fresh diesel, to eliminate tank problems. Do those quick disconnect fuel lines need something jammed in the end to let fuel flow through them? Possible culprits I can think of: had to give old lady one of my new batteries when hers died this winter, hers that I swapped in the f550 might be weak, even though it tests good. Big positive and negative cables are old, look okay but they can have internal damage. Starter gets hotter than I think it should, which can indicate that if I remember right. I swapped in a perfect looking fuel bowl heater, old one was rusted away, probably from the doofus letting it sit with fuel tank open to the sky, hah. I scrubbed rust out, flushed with clean diesel, new filter. I know im getting pressure, cause fuel bowl lid was real stuck, when I put a screw in it to get it off, got a face full of diesel, lol, hadn't done that in a while. Got diesel splashed on top of motor, so I shined up all the glow plug solenoid connections, air intake heater connections, and starter connections for good luck. I did not do their bases, so that's one thing, but if it could run the glow plugs, it would throw a code right? I'm parked on a side slope, and didn't want to over fill the engine oil, I drained some oil out though, to get coolant out, I had some coolant escape into the oil when I did cups on a side slope. Think I will check hpop reservoir and top up again if low. I did before but tore some cartilage in my knee and she sat a couple months till could see knee doc and he okayed me to wrench again. Is the front solenoid the same as the rear glow plug one? If so I can swap it out too, got a new one with the uv wire harnesses, and had already swapped in a new one for that. Thanks in advance for any advice, it's killing me being so close, hah. It pops off a little, and I get a wiff of that burned diesel smell from the tailpipe.

Hey bud. Glad to hear ya makin some progress on the ole’ 550. When I knock off this evening I will unpack all this and get back to ya. That’s a lot of info to process and between my projects and viewers projects I’m running low on the old brain cells. But I will hit ya back shortly with my thoughts. Appreciate ya

@@bayoudiesel no rush, sorry for wall of text, just figured I'd give you all the info, in case something unimportant to me was helpful to your diagnostic magic, hah. I reached my chaos threshold in the shop, so built some shelves and organized, just charged the old f550 project and gave it a crank every 3 hours or so. Same story. Fires a couple of cylinders, Almost starts but not quite.

Ok, my turn to get long winded. Lol
I have no info on how the truck ran or didn’t before all your work started so that could change a thing or tow
      Glow plugs
I had a 7.3 that the wait to start light would not come on some time but glow plugs were. You can test the large terminals on the rear solenoid to see if it’s activating. One post is always hot the other will be hot for 30 sec after key on. The front solenoid is air intake heater. May not be able to handle the load of glow plugs.
OBD2 connector. Is there a shirt in the connector or is the pcm having trouble?
Fuel. The quick disconnects are open so you can just drop them into a container of diesel and roll. Have you checked your fuel pressure? Should be 55-60psi. The fact that you have a smell of unburnt diesel or white smoke while cranking tells me a couple of things. You must be getting over 520psi on the hpop which will then let the injectors to pulse. The smell/smoke tells me fuel is coming out of the injectors. You can also leave the fuel bowl drain open and key on to piss out some diesel to see flow and pressure.
Batteries. These engines need cranking speed to generate compression and heat. One weak battery can mess that up. I like to see 175+ rpm’s. This seen on a scanner also tells ya the cps is good.
Make sure to tip off hpop res and you can also fill the oil galleys as well. These help insure less air to purge from the system.
With this much work done there was probably not much hpop oil in the galleys. They can be a pain to purge all the air out. Check those hpop levels (res & galley) as well as full on the dip stick. Have 2 good batteries and have a charger hooked up to. Crank and let starter cool then crank again. When she cranks she probably won’t sound happy. Let her warm up, you can fast idol as well to like 1100rpms. She will still need 50 or so miles of road time to completely clear up.
Let me know if I missed something and we can pick it up from there and kick it around again. Hit me back with your thoughts on all this.

@@bayoudiesel you are the best, thanks for the second opinion, you know how it is, you bang your head on your own problem for days, and your buddy sees the problem right away, then the same thing happens on his rig hah. Will have to look up the galleries you are talking about, but I'll fill them as well as refill the hpop res, I did that once but I'm sure it drained down in the 3 months it took to get my knee checked, hah. It smells like burned diesel in a poorly running diesel, but no smoke I can see out the pipe. Will throw a second good battery in, think the wife's one I swapped might be damaged it doesn't seem like I get as many crank attempts as I should, before I need to recharge. Will try all your recommendations, thanks again for taking the time I know you are a busy bee, if it makes you feel better, I went to go buy a trail 70 basket case, to teach my nephew how to wrench on Monday, and spent the whole day helping the seller fix his dirt bike, cause he was a broke kid, hah. It all comes around. Thanks.
