I hated when he came to my team, Benfica... I knew he was only half a player because of his injuries! Then I saw that Cup Final and I had to surrender. He was a genius even with those limitations.
I saw Futre playing in in the end of his carreer, his knee was a problem but the cocaine, poor career choises and the horrible takles of the time made his desteny. Undoubtedly a magnificent talent with lots of dribling, speed and power shots.

Was there at Jamor on that Portuguese Cup final. Probably his last big performance. What a player he was. He destroyed Boavista. There was also a young Rui Costa in that team. Rui Costa was great at seeing the game, the maestro but Futre was the can opener. He was incredible in his dribble. Great video.

Around 1986, almost every soccer ball in Mexico had the name or brand "FUTRE". I had always thought that "FUTRE" was just a brand, I had never heard of the soccer player, until now.
As a Portuguese national, I was incredibly happy for him and FC Porto when they beat Bayern. Thst gsme is engraved in my memory. Futre and Atletico were a good mix, but Gil y Gil was a corrupt demagogue and played his part in wearing down one of Portugal’s best.
I grew up watching both play. Both were cult heroes of mine. Just missed Futres time in Portugal + first couple of seasons at Letti(so arguably missed his best time). I started watch La Liga from 89/90 onwards. My memory is that his decline had started by then(early/mid 20s ... injuries, not looking after himself/smoking etc). He was still World class at times(copa etc) but was already a bit of a forgotten legend outside of La Liga & Portugal. When he moved to West Ham I remember telling people what a great player he was(when on form), & then been very disappointed in his time there. Rui Costa was consistently excellent. I loved him at Fiorentina. I was actually disappointed he moved to Milan as Fiorentina also had that cult status. However the move to Milan, arguably a bigger club, actually made him even better. They were different styles of players/different positions so Ive never ever thought of comparing them before, or picking one over the other. TBH I hate doing that with any players. Futre was a better dribbler/more dynamic/possibly had a higher peak etc but Costa was pure class & had longevity. Such an elegant player. If I HAD to pick one Id just go for Costa coz he was always brilliant & seemed to get better and better with age.. Both were World Class on their day tho. Gullit was also an unreal athlete and player. Plus a total icon as well. His Ballon Dor win does seem very suspicious that season but overall he was right up there with the very very best of his generation. Three great players & three legends of the game.
I remember signing this guy on Fifa 96 back in the day. He became a legend for me and my favourite player in the game. Popping in goals left and right. Used always sign him

I am 48 and had the big privilege to watch Paulo Futre playing. His talent was someting only matched by Maradona, maybe Ronaldinho and more recently by Messi. I would even say Maradona is probably the most similar to Futre's skills. Apart from Eusébio (finished career before I was born), no other Portuguese player can be compared to Futre's talent! Pitty that Futre, after winning Champions with Porto in 1987, aged 21, decided to accept a millionaire proposal from Atlético Madrid, when it was not a majour team in Europe. Eventhough he was a huge star there, he didn't have the visibility CRonaldo had in Manchester and Real or Figo in Barcelona and Real, 10 or 20 years later. Also, Futre played in a Portuguese national team with good players, but without the professionalism and orgnanizational high standards it has since the 2000s ... Thanks for the video, a nice tribute to this forgotten football genius!!!
Won the champions with Porto in a Final against Lothar mathaus Bayern, and what a game! In Madrid (Atletico) he was known as the player that could dribble the adversary team within a phone boot (but forgets the door way out) :P
When he joined us at West Ham near the end of his career, even with the injuries you could see the utter class the man possessed.
The question is, who passed his medical? 😂😂 he clearly had one knee and was still just soo good. Loved that era of West Ham.
Then he refused to play with the n16, stormed out of the stadium shouting that Pele, Maradona and Eusébio were the 10 and not 16. In 93-94 I've "played" ball with him, Figo, Paulo Sousa, Rui Costa, Chalana was there too, Couto, Bento, Baia, Neno, Oceano, Rui Aguas, J.Pinto and a bunch of other national team players. Someone reading this who went to ESA, ESS or ESC of Margem Sul, can atest has they will remember Seixaliadas at the time. Many of them were from the great Lisbon area and one of my teachers at the time is Figo godfather. We have an event dedicated to sports every year, the Seixaliadas, and he arranged with the municipality and Selecao Nacional for them to come to the event. They first stopped at our school unannounced and we got to kick some balls with them! Kid's dream man, it was nuts.
Do you know Marco Conde ?
I only knew his name before this. What an absolute legend. Shame about his injuries.
One of the best players, if not the best, to play for Atletico de Madrid. Thank you Paulo.
This UA-cam Channel always brings back so many memorys i thought i had lost and always reminds me of why i fell in love with this sport in the first place.
THANK YOU.
Futre and Maradona had so much in common. Talent and that love for the line 😂
Of course, they played on the wing. It was their job. 😂
@@kofio7581 That too! 😂👍
What LINE__________ __________ __________ __________ ?
What a video, thank you. I’ve heard his name before but didn’t know he was this good. What a career!
Futre was for sure on the top 5 best players of is time!! He is the reason i started to love futebol
Paulo Futre played for my club FC Porto. We became European champions in '87 with him. The older ones, there isn't one who doesn't say how much of a genius he was at his best. That left foot of his was something absurd. What ruined his career were the serious injuries; otherwise, he would certainly have had a career at Maradona level ....and R. Costa was good, but Futre was on another level.
I remember the goals of Futre and Schuster in the Copa Final against Marid...one of my foundest and sweet Football memories from my childhood. The Triumph of good against Evil
But if Atlético won, means the evil won. Maybe you're mistaken.... (Hahahahahah)
@@juananonimo6993real is the evil
@@tristanherb49 But the real evil is Atlético.....jokes aside, never gonna understand the bout from Atlético fans.
It's like your neighbor have something against you but you see them 2 times in a year and, well you try to behave and things like that but he is offended for all eternity and tries to kill you. Because 50 years ago something happened.....and no one remembers what.
@@juananonimo6993 im not even a atletico or real fan but real is more of an evil than atletico
@@tristanherb49 When you say a sport club is "evil" I hope you're referring to someone in particular, because the players and the associates can't be all "evil" just because someone do something you deemed evil.
And I was writing that as a joke respond to some comments in this thread.
But when someone call a sport club "evil" seriously, well, I tend to think that person is detached from reality. I hope that's not your case.
I’ve never heard of Futre up until this point but I think this is the most entertaining footballing story you’ve told so far.
Now Serch for chalana
Oh!!!Paulo Futre sir is a legendary footballer even though,he retired early but he was a talented player at that time, good friends!!!🙏
But u voted for Rui Costa.. Bandwagon jumper !! 😂😂
@@Dante--X You are just as deluded as your reply, bad friend!!!When that voting process happened,I would never hesitate to vote for Paulo Futre but you just live your delusional life, bad friend!!!🤣🤣
Damn! You can tell a story. Your delivery and flow is next level
Im an atletico fan, and his carreer here was just amazing. Thank yoi for covering this!
This is the reason why I love playing Fifa (FC now), because I never heard of some of the newer Icons/Heroes and then I end up watching an amazing informative video about them
Grande crescimento
phenomenal documentary! what a class he was! if admiration came from Maradona himself.. you got to believe it. Just unfortunate injury curtailed his career!
Superb tribute to a superb player. Well done. Most of your videos are a class above virtually all others on YT.
I remember him at Atletico de Madrid.......best player in the Spanish league at that time (and probably Europe).....great to watch even though I’m not not an Atleti fan.....
Futre is a legend! Every Atletico supporter love him, no matter if you were able to see him play or not. 🔴⚪
I have chosen Futre although it was a tough choice vs Rui Costa. Futre was pure genius! ❤
Figo
To begin with i would like to congratulate you on your really informative and intresting content as well as suggest a video idea on Georgios Karagounkis... a legend that hardly anyone knows but he had a wonderfull career
Was waiting for this video. I live near Reggio Emilia (Italy) Futre is still a legend here!
I didn't realise Futre was so good. Wow even Maradona praised him - that is in itself an accolade. Thanks for letting us know.
Paulo Futre deserves spot in Portugal Hall of Fame.
tem jogadores superiores.
@@MrMiCruzquem ?
What an incredible player he was. A true legend.
I hated when he came to my team, Benfica... I knew he was only half a player because of his injuries! Then I saw that Cup Final and I had to surrender. He was a genius even with those limitations.
I never knew this guy I'm humbled and shocked... This man is the closest thing to Messi I've ever seen
So true...i felt the same❤❤
I saw Futre playing in in the end of his carreer, his knee was a problem but the cocaine, poor career choises and the horrible takles of the time made his desteny. Undoubtedly a magnificent talent with lots of dribling, speed and power shots.
Such a great documentary! Thank you! Never knew how talented FUTRE was! so inspiring.
Very sad what happened to Futre. Better than any player I’ve seen so far. Pure talent and courageous to the max.
I heard about futre many times, but the way this youtuber tells his story is awesome...
amazing video!! would be nice to see one about Futre's Idol, the amazing Fernando Chalana!! I didn't watch Chalana play, but from the videos I saw of him they were both very similar players. Keep up the great content!!
when i was a kid, and we would play the first football game of the school year, the best player of the game had claim to call himself Futre for the rest of the year. 30 years later, we still call him Futre. (he was the best untill we left school...)
I'm 50 and without doubt Futre is one of the best players I've ever seen play. Like Maradona and Messi he just made playing look easy, the greatest players have that ability
I’m a huge portugese league fan( I support Benfica ), and hands down, what a player he was! Sporting must be kicking themselves in the head, not keeping him. 🖤❤️
Futre and Atletico were a good mix, but Gil y Gil was a corrupt demagogue and played his part in wearing down one of Portugal’s best.
what an incredible story and production! thank you, I enjoyed it very much!
Eu concordo Plenamente
Terá siso a época das entradas à Paulinho Santos?
That shot of the coach trying to drink from a closed bottle. Genius when put in the context of denying a playing like van Basten.
I was 8 years old, but on November 21, 1993, I was there at Mirabello Stadium enjoying this wonderful player.... For 60 minutes 🥲
Paulo Jorge dos Santos Futre was a superstar in the 80s but like many people forgot how great he was
I remember signing this guy on Fifa 96 back in the day. He became a legend for me and my favourite player in the game. Popping in goals left and right. Used always sign him

Outside his talent and everything, I can see him and Ginola competing on the most handsome player discussion.
I can see your comment competing for the most gay comment award lol
Search for Daniel da Cruz Carvalho, another genius who grew up at Sporting CP and you will see what's handsome. Like Futre he also went to Atletico, West Ham and Benfica and retired at just 27 because he was more interested in other things. When he arrived at West Ham, the press said "lock up your daughters because Dani has arrived"
Cannavaro will always be the most beautiful player ever, IMO.

Wow nice video I didn't know about futre at all
Im portuguese and i voted Futre 😅. I respect rui costa a lot...but....ive watched futre play...
What an awesome tribute, obrigada.

My childhood idol! Probably still most liked player at Atletico!
Greatest tribute ever, very well done, thanks.
pauloooooooo fuuuutreee maaan!!!!!!!!! got goosebumps
Easily one the most gifted and destructive dribblers of all time!
Futre is one of the few players that all of the portuguese fans adore...an exemple out and in the pitch regardable of the colour of the team jersey. In my opinion one of the best football players of all time....the way that he passed the defense with his left foot is incredible.
People watching this, should really go see Barbosa Futbol's video of his highlights on youtube. I had heard of him many times but you need to see the man in action to really get a feel for just HOW good he was. Guy was a monster!
Can you perhaps make a video about another star of the Porto team? It was before my time but Madjer looked great in the final against Munich.
Thank you for the Futre tribute
Imagine Futre and Maradona playing football these days.
Only Lucas from this amazing channel can tell Futre's story with such passion, the same passion Futre put into his playing.
Since you mentioned madjer i hope you do a video about the algerian national team in 82 wc and the scandal of Gijón
It was sad that he injured his knee on his Reggiana debut. It was a beautiful goal and he could have really given a small club like that a great image boost.
How do you know so much about football, had no clue who he was when I saw the poll
He is portuguese
Well shit man!
Well done.
Futre was a beast.
But u voted for Rui Costa.. Bandwagon jumper !! 😂😂
I'm in love with you videos
Refs during his time should have protected this jewel of a player. He was a monster.
i had no idea about futre. after seeing his plays i am amazed. he dribbles like messi, passes like toni kroos. what a player
Italy, Germany, England had insane tackless that of which today would easily be handed a red + months of suspension for asaillant on premise of atempted murder...80's90's
As an Atlético fan, thank you for talking about Futre, he's very underrated.
Nowadays he’s only remembered as the “homem do motor de arranque”. Kinda sad but funny at the same time
The only reason i know futre because of fifa it's sad to know he couldn't achieve his potential.
He played in the roughest of times of the Spanish championship... Those defenders were pure assassins! I remember being a kid and felling disgusted when we got to see any colchonero's game. Pure massacres. But that tackle in Italy should have seen the defender expelled permanently!
Pepe: hold my beer!
9:37 Thanks for adding this clip. I had a good laugh.
Paulo Futre is a Legend!! The best ever of our generation, obrigado Paulinho!
I haven't forgotten Futre..Such an immense potential in those days
Won the champions with Porto in a Final against Lothar mathaus Bayern, and what a game!
In Madrid (Atletico) he was known as the player that could dribble the adversary team within a phone boot (but forgets the door way out) :P
I just need to say. Go and watch Porto champions league final in 87 and watch is feet again bayern and oh my! Is left foot was outstanding
