HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE! As a way to start 2022, I decided to bring back a lost classic, now rebooted with more cool details about the career of the magical Roberto Baggio. The original was the video that blew up my channel and unfortunately it was blocked by youtube due to copyright issues when it was about to become my first to hit a million views... thankfully you made sure that by the end of the year a few others got to the iconic 1 Million. It's disgusting that UA-cam took down your previous Roberto Baggio video, but then this is how the platform now operates. Superb video btw, very comprehensive. Did you know that Baggio recovered in record time from yet another cruciate knee ligament inury at the age of 35? He worked his ass off to be in contention for a place at the 2002 World Cup. He was still the best attacking player in Italy at the time and so it was extremely annoying that Trapattoni chose to ignore him. Despite having a great squad in 2002, particulary in defence and attack, the team itself was woeful and devoid of imagination. They only just scraped it out of the group, and while they were unlucky to go out to South Korea due to a crooked ref, if truth be told, they were never going to win while under Trapattoni's out-of-date, defensive tactics.

When he was playing at the height of his ability..Week in&out doing some amazing&magical things for Juve,Milano and of course his National Team,this was being done,when he was facing seriously Hard tackles&many fouls of course,!
And it may sound trivial,but the Ball was a lot harder&football Pitches /surfaces were not like u see now!!
And yet Roberto Baggio would perform like a Master Technician and sometimes a Magician out there!
And as much as I respect the Skills,ability and Genius of Messi and CR7, I could not see them doing what they do now,back then!

Baggio scores that penalty and Italy win that World cup he's a top 5 player all time. That's how fickle people are. If you put him up against any of the greats, his dribbling, control, free kicks, technique, football IQ, vision as well as combination of goalscoring and assisting and overall natural talent are as good as any number 10 ever. All this being injured his whole career. Phenomenal player.
He was a 10 and a 9 in the same player. That is the magic of Baggio.
What people forget is even if Baggio scored, Italy was still down a goal. Bebeto was up next and would have sealed it anyway.
If Baggio would have scored the penalty, Italy could still would of lost as the Brazilians had the last shot.

Roberto Baggio is so special that he's beloved by everyone here in Italy, even if he played for all the biggest teams in our league.
Personally, I had the privilege to see him in his finals year in my hometown Brescia.
And it was magical, never saw another superstar on the pitch that was also unbelieveable humble in his normal life.

I've travelled across Italy a lot over the past years. Here I've also managed to watch a lot of football with Italians. A lot of people actually still think of him as their favourite footballer ever in Italian football history. From Milano (Milan) to Firenze (Florence) a lot of people still see him as their icon.

In the UK we were lucky to have Serie A games broadcast on Sundays in the early to late 90s, this was due to Italia 90 and David Platt moving to Bari, Juventus and Sampdoria + Paul Gascoigne moving to Lazio, we got to see so many wonderful things, that early 90s AC Milan team, Bastistuta at Florentina, Baggio, Parma doing awesome stuff and a seeing Buffon play for the first time as a 17 year old and George Weah running from his own 18 yard box to score! 90s serie A was amazing and Baggio was superb

If you watched Baggio closely, during his career. You were witness to something extraordinary. Watching Baggio play football is like watching Black Thought rap or watching Daniel Day Lewis act. It was absolutely masterful. One of the major reasons why, I'm still a football fan all these years later.

He was devastating, and most of his coaches couldn't take him being THAT good. I've seen him play more than once and it was just poetry.
Baggio often lamented that it was only his first and last coaches that ever understood him (at Vincenza and Brescia). Everyone thought Carlo Mazzone was mad for bringing Baggio to Brescia, but in those last four seasons, we arguably saw the best a veteran has ever offered the sport in the modern age.
Mazzone said this about him - "Roberto Baggio was the best Italian fantasista; he was better than Meazza and Boniperti, and he was amongst the greatest of all time, right behind Maradona, Pelé, and maybe Cruyff. Without the injury problems and the difficulties with his knees, he would have been the very best player in history."
The crazy thing about Baggio is that he wasn't theorically able to play that well with the injuries he had, but he played majestically anyways. There was something almost supernatural about him, so fragile yet so phenomenal. He was made of glass but played like he was made of diamond. That elegance, derived by his physical precariousness, made him a magical player to witness. He was so cautious at every move he did, so that he saw things other players couldn't, and made him one of the smartest players of all time.
My dad worked at a restaurant in Florence in the early 90s and his boss was sokagakkai, which is the same buddhist "sept" Baggio was in, and they used to do meetings in the restaurant all the time, so my dad encountered Baggio many times while he played for Fiorentina. Even for his '94 World Cup miss, a very few people in Italy wouldn't think of him as the best italian player of all time.

Baggio became world player of the year post not one but two career threatening injuries when he was still very young. It makes his achievements even more remarkable.
Have seen often Baggio on the bench is still hurts so much. Here in Italy we all know why he was so opposed by the coaches. If the team won with Baggio (like Juventus in 1993/1995) he would have taken away the merits of the coaches.
He really shone too much for the pompous ego of the overly envious and jealous coaches like Trapattoni, M.Lippi or Arrigo Sacchi.
Now, you can probably understand why it was above all the people who loved him.

Alessandro del Piero is my favorite footballer. But Baggio as a symbol and icon is something else. It's an honour for del Piero to be even likened to him. Baggio's football is pure and he has an atypical personality, he made so many people fall in love with Italian football.
I came across Baggio from his documentary on Netflix. Since then, I fell in love with "The Divine Ponytail"

Baggio on the bench, is really something I would never understand throughout this life. If these stupid ass arrogant coaches didnt mismanage him, he would have broken all Italian scoring records. His goals involvement ratio was insane once fit, and when he was fit he was benched. And he was really that type of player, even though he came on as a sub in the last 20 25 mins, he would either score or assist or do both..My favourite player whilst growing up and still is...💯💯

Roberto Baggio. I think I was the only person that possiby thanked him as he missed the famous penalty in the US world cup. I knew that we would have never gotten that far had it not been for him. Love this player, love the man. Will always be my favorite! A true class act!
Great video! Baggio was undoubtedly the best player in the world during his prime and is one of the greatest ever to have played the game. His career was compromised by injuries, but ultimately tanked by primadonna managers (Sacchi and Lippi mostly, but Capello, too), who were jealous of the credit Baggio always took for any team’s achievement. I recommend watching his famous goal for Brescia vs Juventus - 34 y.o., broken knee, playing for a small team against a giant in what was at that time the best league in the world. That magic first touch is something unseen. The difficulty of execution, the creativity in conceiving such a move and the bravado in believing you can do it… Not Pelé, not Maradona, Messi… nobody has ever done anything like that

Ronaldo is probably only the only player out of the consensus top players of all time, that ain’t naturally talented, in its purest sense. Cristiano is aesthetically ugly to watch imo, in comparison to the natural flair and elegance, of a Baggio/Zidane/Messi/Diego.
An analogy i tend to use, is, Ronaldo is factory build, a machine, a physical specimen, every component part, is state of the art, all his skills are taught, programmed through practice and repetition.
But Baggio, Messi, Maradona, they’re God made, everything they do is pure natural instinct.

He would probably be top 3 best player at the time! He would also have been a better player if he wasn't so moody.. he was always a fan favourite when he played at United, but sometimes it could get annoying to see him when he was really moody, but that just added character. At least I think so..
And I don't think he wasn't respected at United? All United fans I know loves Berbatov.. maybe a little less now, because of his words as a pundit.. ( very often say's more or less shit about United players ). Although some of them deserve it from time to time these years. But some of them he's just unfairly harsh against..

Baggio got to be a footballer with an Italy who wasn't ready for what he brought to the game. The most brazilian italian, a one-legged man who could dribble through anything, hated from his coaches, loved by the people. He's inspired generations of youngsters and showed everyone how Italy was not all about defense.

I'm a young Ghanaian who likes to hear stuffs about icons and legends of world soccer. Roberto Baggio was a fighter because he never let even the worst injury ever happened to him tied him down to retirement. He retired with a style and in an iconic matchup against AC Milan. Legendary Baggio is such a player I won't ever forget even though I never got to see him play on the pitch or on TV

There is a story that you may not know that happened while at Brescia. Brescia were on the field for the pregame warmup at Parma for a Coppa Italia game but a player was missing, Vittorio Mero had decided to come to the game with his own vehicle but nobody could find him. The news arrived to the officials of Brescia that Vittorio Mero had just died in a car crash but they didnt tell the players because they wanted the game to go on. The fans found out and they started chanting Vittorio's name. When Baggio realized what happened he took off his Captain's armband and led his players off the field and to the dressing room with most of them in tears.

Cracked me up when you said him and Dino weren't related. As an Irish football fan when we played Italy in the 1994 world cup a famous Irish commentator came out with a call that has gone down in Irish football folklore:
"Ireland will have to contain the famous Baggio brothers........(awkward pause) The Baggio brothers are of course not actually related"

Roby is a footballer that I love with all my heart, even though he's retired a long time ago. But my memories of seeing him play are precious things that will remain forever etched in my heart. To me he's the GOAT for many reasons, like his injuries, how he was hated by coaches, how he played in little teams, how he never commited fouls, and much more.

That 94' World Cup penalty shootout against Brazil is literally my earliest football memory. I can still remember him kicking it over looking all dejected. Actually brought a tear to my eye just now hearing his story.

I just watched baggio at the end of his carrier (a few in Inter, more in Brescia). He was (is) so famous as an iconic football player that even a child will know his name. One day, i read about his trophy which i considered it as "not really great for a player like him". But then, i understand that what he did in his carrier was so much and memorable. He scored many and contributed much for his team, but unfortunately got defeated by greater teams
Sadly, he will always be remembered for his World Cup 94' final performance against Brazil.
Dude I'd love a video on Carletto Mazzone. He was the coach of Baggio at Brescia and one of the first to coach Totti in Rome. He is a peculiar figure in italian football, you will love him.

The ‘94 World Cup was the first World Cup I ever watched. I didn’t know anything at all about football at the time but I knew, watching him play, that I was seeing something special. He was one of those truly magical players that made me a lifelong fan of the game.
Watching this guys highlights, he looks like one of the greatest to have ever played the game. To find out he was injured the whole time is just otherworldly.

If Manchester United would of signed Baggio at the time when he left Juventus. I honestly think Baggio would of had the type of impact on United that King Eric Cantona had. You can only imagine how Baggio would of developed as a player under a manager like Sir Alex Ferguson, who would of invested time into Baggio the two of them together could of achieved Greatness of a different level at United.
at that time serie A was way better than Premier League, so no reason for him going compete in a less competitive league. Cantona was good but i guess Baggio talent is way over. At that time he would crush any defence. Some years later Gianfranco Zola did good in Chelsea and he was Baggio back up with national team.

Great video! Nice to see people outside of Italy appreciating the great Baggio. Just one thing that I can tell you as Italian. When you say Roberto, or Rossi, the "r" is not like the Spanish one. You pronounce it as in "Rock", it's a rolling "r", not a guttural one. There is no guttural "R" in Italian :). It's the same you pronounce in "Fiorentina". There is no guttural "R" in Italian :). Sorry to point this out, but the video was so great and it just sounded so odd! Keep up the good work!
He pronounced 'r' as the spanish 'j', much rather sounded portuguese 'r'. Spanish speaker do not pronounce 'r' as it sounded in this video, which by the way is a greaat one.

They're different kind of players. Del Piero looked stronger, quicker, while Baggio was way more technical, but met many coaches who didn't know how to handle this kind of a player. He had the technical proficiency of Zidane but he played too forward to be a playmaker. He was good enough to be a striker, a center forward and a CAM, but he never found the right space in teams who were searching for players perfectly fitting their role. That's why his most memorable campaigns were on minor teams like Bologna or Brescia, bringing them to unimaginable levels, and it's there where he is still regarded as an icon for the teams. Fiorentina, Juventus and Milan had so many great names, but Baggio is the only one who had the modesty to play for minor teams for the true passion of the sport.
In the players born after Baggio nobody comes close to him. It's an honour to be even compared to him for players like del Piero and Totti.

@@kcapo89 I think that speed wasn't what made him special, he had supernatural precision and dribbling technique but he never had to run a lot, that was what it looked to me. I mean he never looked fatigued, on a rush, that was what made him so elegant, like Totti. Del Piero was way more physical and "pragmatic" in my opinion, he was a different kind of italian player. I remember an interview of this podcast kind of thing here in Italy that is called Bobo TV (it's held by Adani, Cassano and Christian Vieri as hosts) and they had Pep Guardiola on and asked him about Baggio in the brief time he played with him in Brescia, and Guardiola said that his positioning was uncomprehensible, he was always in the right place at the right time and nobody understood how it was possible. He saw movements seconds earlier than any other player on the pitch, and I think that was his way to compensate the fact that he wasn't able to play on strict spaces as it would've be damaging to his very precarious physical condition. He played CAM/CF with the mentality of a striker. It's like putting the ability on the ball of the finest dribblers of all time (as to say Zidane) with the vision of Pirlo and the positioning of Inzaghi. He peaked so much that coaches didn't know in what role he should've actually play. That's why he became the substitute of players that embraced their role in a more conventional way, and it didn't make justice for Baggio at all. But his main traits, in my opinion, were vision, positioning and dribbling ability, and really no other great italian player had all three at the same time. Also a very rare thing you see, which is really something marginal I guess, maybe even stupid to say, is when players use their brains aside their feet. Totti was so good, but his "smartness" was almost muscular, he had smart feet. Players like Zidane or Baggio, they were cerebral. Everything they made they made it out of a genius mind applied to football. They knew so much more than anybody else on the stadium. It's like they are enlightened by something else, their like Gods. Maybe I'm exaggerating, but maybe that's what they made these footballers legendary.

I am honored to have watched Baggio play. One of my most favourite players. I was sad for him in 1994 as he missed that penalty in the world cup finals.
Guy was something else. I will always remember that 94 World Cup as his pinnacle. Just sad he wasn’t able to win it!

Roberto Baggio is my all time favourite player. Most of my favourites are strangely Italian or Argentinian (I'm English).
Roberto Baggio made his teams play much better, only just a handful players can/could do that. And he played with so much elegance!
my father watched a game where baggio played in 1994 in the gillette stadium in foxboro. he only knew the very basic rules of football but when he watched roberto baggio, he saw just how dominant he was. even injured my father described baggio as magestic.

I remember the world cup missed penalty. I was 14 at the time. I remember a Johnny Walker commercial showing baggio missing the penalty and starts walking... "keep walking" Johnny walker red label. I think a lot of football fans loved baggio! It was a beauty to watch.

I feel sad about batigol.. he was a beast on the pitch but i read an article about his injuries after his retirement. He was in great pain on his old wound and he couldn't get up from his bed. At the end he wet himself on the bed.. i was sad reading that..

The first big football event I remember in my life was WC 1994 and Roberto Baggio and Gheorghe Hagi were my 'superstars'. I was so sad (only 7 years of age) when Baggio missed his penalty. True legend!!

Personally, Baggio was always my favourite... I really wished he won the 94 World Cup... I watched every match as he was pivotal for Italy to progress, indeed without him Italy was nowhere... I do remember the entire team Giuseppe, Maldini, Donatello and many I can't remember now... 94 World Cup was very close to me emotionally... the only other cup that covered that feeling was Messi's 2014 World Cup which was fulfilled in 2022... this was a Great video... for me, Baggio will always be the relentless tiring player who will be somehow forgotten in the shores of greatness... everyone will achieve greatness in the brightside but there will always be the greats no one will remember that will be lost with the passage of time...

A great. Saw him play often and couldn’t help but think his early injuries ruined a potentially great career. Still he got better with age, losing pace made him adjust his game and I think it made him able to play better.

He is a certain class above the rest. Something celestial....astronomical about him. The eyes, the piercing looks, the hair, the movement.... the style....n above all, a career built on a single leg......a weak knee..... everything ended b4 it began.....n he still made it..... if only he was in one piece...... he would have been untouchable..... my comments in 2022..... I'm a diehard brazil fan n the kind of players that brazil produced but somehow.....Baggio made it into my heart. Am exception he is..... my idol forever.

It's obvious that same like me you have been fascinated by Roberto's career and personality... Everyone is unique i their own way but Roberto will be always to me the best Italian player of all time who has never been given opportunity to fulfill his genius potential. That makes him probably more special and of course the tragic hero of the world cup 94. Btw. You did say one little incorrect information. In 94 WC play off rounds Roberto scored 5 of 6 Italian goals. You said 6 of 7 but still beautiful documentary ;-) Thank you man :-)

Milan had a great team in that era, possibly the best club side ever, but I can honestly say Baggio was the best player in serie A, when the Italian league was at its peak.
Single handedly got them through to the final in 94. Shame he missed the penalty and is remembered for that, as he had been excellent in that tournament.
The irony of the fate of that penalty is that at the time he was the best penalty scorer of the Serie A ever.

@@markschiering3212 i think he is definitely appreciated more now. Scoring goals back then was pretty difficult against some of the best defenders that have played the game. Serie A in the 90s was similar to the Premier league now, only better. The best players and coaches were there and tackling was also still allowed.
I was 10 tears old when I first watched him play in Italia 90 world cup. Still the greatest player so poetic on the ball but that knee injury held him back. He deserved so much more praise because he suffered so much during his career. I hope he is doing well? Will always be GOAT. 🙏

he became one of the best in the world and a Balon d'or winner playing with a leg and a half, in an old interview he showed both his legs and one was visibly smaller than the other and in that interview he says that he often has excruciating pain in his knee but he just can't stop playing football, if he was born now with the cures and everything there his now for that kind of injury or if that early career injury never happened there is no doubt in my mind he would be in the conversation for the goat, this is one of the biggest what if's for me.

2 months ago we wanted to bring a small present to my son's football coach. There were a lot of handmade figures in the shop of all movies, football, boxing, etc stars ... And from all of them there was 1 Baggio and we picked up him. You know, he is really someone special and valuable. Maybe he is a bit forgotten by masses, but not by the true fans.

I was too young to see Baggio at his best in Fiorentina or Juventus, so I started to see him when he was in Fiorentina. Since I was little the reference I had of Baggio is that of the guy who missed the decisive penalty in the '94 WC Final but once I started to watch his games I realized he was unbelievable.
Next season, with Inter, I was expecting the "neriazzuri" to win everything since they were the first "Galactic" team because in those years they had Baggio, Ronaldo, Recoba, Zamorano and so on. Sadly, it was not meant to be and this era ended in a great dissapointment. Yet, I remember a few times when Baggio came out of nowhere to become the man of the match. Specially that match against Real Madrid was remarkable.
Then came his time in Brescia, a modest team that in a short period of time managed to have a some incredible players like Luca Toni, Pirlo, Dario Hubner, Guardiola and of course, Baggio. At the time it was hard to watch games from small teams, it wasn't like now, when you can watch either in cable or stream whatever team you. Still, I remember I did whatever I could to watch Brescia, for me they were the David fighting the Goliaths in the Italian Serie A. And Baggio, now with his head full of greys was the absolute leader of this band of rebels. He lead this small team to qualify to European Cups for a few years and made some magical football.
So great was Baggio that the season after his retirement Brescia descended to the Serie B and then to Serie C1. It's just insane to know he took a team from the third tier of the Italian football and made it an "European" team.
As far as for me, Baggio was one of the best players ever and the European footballer with the most magic and I believe if it wasn't for injuries Baggio would have been in the same category as Pelé, Maradona or Messi.
The first "Galactic" Italian team was late-80s-early'90s AC Milan with Maldini, Baresi, Donadoni, Van Basten, Gullit, Rijkaard and Costa Curta. No other Italian team was as good. The only other club side on that level was Barca '10. Mourinho's Inter and Madrid before Beckham won the same trophies, but they did it via coaching tactics, grit, or individual talent; never all three like AC Milan had around '90.
