How to Change Oil on a Harley Dyna - Engine/Transmission/Primary
How to change Dyna oil, how to change engine primary transmission oil, Dyna oil change - Авто та транспорт
Man, I've been a mechanic for 50 years, had a softail for the last 17, bought a '06 dyna recently and watchaed a ton of videos on servicing it - wish I'd seen yours first! Clear, concise and no 'down-talking'. I'm a Killswitch Queen fan now!!!
Couldn’t agree more
Trans and Prim should be filled and checked with bike upright/level (dipstick dipped only, not screwed down) and Engine oil should be checked on the sidestand, dipstick screwed down (that is why it swivels).
Just picked up an 06’ Dyna and your video is fantastic! You are very knowledgeable and make it very simple for a “new to HD” dude like me. Love the humor too!
I have a 2007 Dyna. Harley said it would take almost a year to service it. I found this video and seen how easy it would be to do it myself. Very straight forward. Thank you for the instruction and the smiles from your awesome corkyness! Loved the video!
Welcome to the wonderful world of DYNA ownership. Enjoy. I have an 06 DWG.
Olivia maybe our Killswitch Queen and a mechanic supreme but in her heart she is a smart ass 12 year old and we love it.
Hell yeah brother, 24/7 🤘
I cut a plastic cup to make a funnel for the oil filter and that worked really well!
Really like the casual way you show/teach things. Keep up the great stuff
Very thorough and entertaining, even "Let's Go, Branden" could understand it, well mabie not :-)
"Bitch Mittens" Lol... Now that's funny. I'm gonna have to remember that.
Gotta keep them fingers nice and soft 😌
I have a 06 DWG, bought her new, named her, "LC", for "Last Chance". Yes, there is a story behind why she's called, "LC". I must say your video on the 3-oil change is spot on. Your aluminum foil idea for the filter is a good one. Many years ago, when I performed my first oil change on this bike, I carved up an empty round plastic quart oil bottle and fashioned it into a drain ramp that slips in underneath the oil filter that allows the oil from the loosened filter to drain down into the catch pan. Been using that same piece of plastic for the past 16 years and haven't spilled a drop yet. I had an 89 Low Rider myself and an 89 Soft Tail Custom. Bought'em new 6 months apart. Those are two bikes I sold in 2017 that I really wish I had back. I've always liked the DYNA's. Sorry, I digress. Thanks for your video. Always nice to confirm what I'm doing is correct. PS: Please include your pooch in your videos. He or she looks like a sweetheart. And is that a Ural I see in the background of another video of yours"? Y'all hang in there.
I just bought a 2017 dyna fatbob and this came just in time !!!! Stay awesome and thank you again
Right on! Congrats on the Fatbob, enjoy it 🤘
Great video, one of the best I've seen, you made it simple and to the point, you made changing my oils on my dyna super glide easy, thank you
Your garage videos are the best out there, big thanks Olivia!!
Glad you like them! Thank you 👍
Very good job. Excellent attitude, and you have compelled me to see more of what you do. Thanks for not being a bore.
You were great Harley Girl in explaining oil change procedures on my 2007 Dyna Wide Glide, best clip I have seen. You saved me a bunch of money. Hope to see you cruising and meet you someday..
Thanks for the great video. Never changed the oils on my bike. Your video was instructive and you explained everything such that a newbie like myself could change all the oils on my Dyna. Thanks
master automotive technician 45 years (retired), getting into bikes now, thanks for the awesome video, God speed to you in the future.
Great video 👍👍👍 I just purchased my first 07 Harley dyna super glide custom so your vid helped me tremendously, thanks
Great video! I’m a fan! Others may have caught this; I haven’t read all the comments: f-style quart bottles have an offset spout to facilitate venting. The spout should be at the top, when pouring. You’ll find it’s much easier to pour that way.
Great tutorial, very detailed. Just did the oil change on my Dyna FXDWG thank you.
Just watched your video, out of all the ones I've seen this one answered my question. Awesome, thanks.😎
Awesome video!!! Thank you!
For those who don’t want to pay for or spend the time getting one of the Harley Davidson filter sockets I just used a 76 mm and cut the window in it with a cut off wheel
Also remember to oil the filter gasket if you don't it's hard to take it off next time great video I'll do some research on red line thank you
I have an ‘09 Dyna Fat Bob and this video is a HUGE help!
Great video....thanks for taking the time to put it together!!
Awesome video Olivia, love your attitude towards your life..... you really are an inspiration...You are happy with your job and love working with tools.... awesome.. Wish I could meet you someday... cheers have a good one
Thank you! You too!👍
Great video. It has been awhile since I changed the fluids and wanted a refresher. One thing I do different for the oil filter - I use a thin piece of cardboard instead of the tin foil. It holds its shape and is ready to jam under the filter.
good idea Terrence, will be using this.
Great video, i bought 2010 dyna, helps tremendously on knowing what expect.
Great to see you back at the shop
Thanks 😃❤
aluminum foil was my secret trick early on in the superbike era....esp. around filters between transverse four cylinders. It is excellent you found it's use too. You have polished mechanical skills , a well done video and well focused close up's of the tools used. I am going to do my friends Switchback oil change this weekend and she will help now, you inspired her.
Amazing commentary and helpful at the same time
I'm a Honda Suzuki and Yamaha Certified mechanic. If you look in most manufacturers repair manuals there is a filter and non filter oil amount, because the filter holds x amount of oil by itself. On my bikes I always change the filter when I change the oil. You are supposed to dip your finger in oil and wipe it on me a ring of the filter to lubricate it so it will seal properly. I always add a little bit of oil in it to soak the filter. Have fun can't wait to see more riding videos
Thanks for sharing, I completely forgot to mention lubing the seal ring of the oil filter. I do this job so much, just forgot to record it!
Pretty cool video appreciate all the information and humor definitely going to watch all your videos 😎
I think if you check your manual you will find a cold engine check should be dead center of the engine dip stick. Hot engine check should be full on the dip stick. This helps reduce oil puking out the throttle body on to the air cleaner. And the bike should upright when filling the primary.
Best how to video yet! Thanks for the coarse.
Awesome video sister, funny and excellent tips along with the knowledge. Thank you.
Thank you for the great refresher!
Best regard from Europe. you should fill your filter with oil once untill you almost spill over...hold it at 45 degreees...rotate it untill the paper filtering element absorbs the oil....than no oil spills when you install it horizotally.Adding oil prevents your bike from running dry the first 10-15 seconds after oil change.
I watched for peace of mind.
Cheers to you and your garage.
🍻
Just got an 08’ fxdl same tank logo thanks for the easy explanation of 3hole fluid change.
Thanks for the video. Really helped
I loved this you made it look so easy good job
They make a special funnel for oil filter removal. Great video and you’re hilarious.
Awesome presentation on oil change
I've seen on here, people punch a hole in the end of the oil filter, with a screwdriver and drain it out that way before removing it. Less mess.😊
You really helped my husband. Thank you!
Just picked up an 09 Dyna
Great video
Nice find. I am going to change my '16 Dyna Wide Glide for the first time.
Thank you for this video! I’ve been hesitant to touch my Harley but after watching and learning from you I got this!
You can do it! Thanks for watching 🤘
Loved this video
You are hysterical! Love it. Nicely done. 😀
Use a K&N OIl filter so you can use a standard socket to take it off next time.
Excellent video thanks
Nicely done!!!
Profesjonalna robota. Pozdrawiam👍👋
Great video as always 👏👏👏👏
Thank you! ❤❤❤
Good video nicely informative the whole fill filter or not is an age old topic I don't want to get into but I would recommend lightly oiling the gasket to help with sealing
Great video!!!! Very informative and entertaining!
Love her personality!
thank you for this video!
Excellent video
Awesome Job!
great video. thank you
Good video, thanks for the laughs too!
"Bitch Mittens" I love it! Olivia rocks - I am in looooove! Thank you for showing me how to change all 3 oils myself.
Thanks ,helped alot!
nice work girl. The only advice I can give you is not to screw the transmission oil cap on when checking the level. just enter it. so says the manual. always pass a drizzle of oil even on the gasket of the new filter 😉
This was awesome!! I’ve got a Dyna too!!
Thank You Sweety, God Bless You !!
you make a good instructional video, especially for a girl.
Que belo trabalho, de fato feito com muita paciência e esmero. Obrigado por compartilhar conosco. Abraços do Brasil.
You make it look fun!
Thank you!! 😄
A mechanic at the Harley dealership told me that threading the caps on was wrong. He said only to go to where the threads start.
That was the first time I had ever heard that
thank you I am glad I watched this video I was contemplating getting into the dealership but I was curious if I could do it myself.
I have a 2011 Electra glide ultra limited it looks about the same setup.
I remember when you worked on this bike for a customer. I would h liked to hear how you ended up with it. I watch all your stuff including your west to east trip, really great job.
How do check the good lebel for primary when the bike is Park on jiffy stand?
I have been adding oil to all my filters for years it helps with startups , even if its just to soak the filter media.
Does it though? Do you have a source or just a feeling that it helps? Genuinely curious
@@KillswitchQueen what it does when the filter media is soaked it makes the oil flow easier on start up.
@@KillswitchQueen it prevents the engine from initially dry pulling. Marginal wear decrease but prolongs the life nonetheless
@@KillswitchQueen PRE FILLING THE OILFILTER IS STANDARD PRACTICE ON DIESEL TRUCKS. must be a reason...
@@KillswitchQueen the filter is positioned AFTER the oil has run through the engine. Pre-filling will NOT therefore prevent any "dry pulling" or make "oil flow easier on start up"
Great Video. Subscribed. 1 point: for my 2003 FXD, manual says to fill primary with the bike upright. Im assuming thats why you had a bit left over :)
Yeah this is tight, love the music too
A great help !!
Awesome job
Great vid! Do you change the fluid after warming it up or just do it cold?
Not sure if I can explain this clearly but, for the filter removal, to keep clean, I use a file folder or carboard or part or a paper bag and cut out a 1" wide x about 4" long strip on one side and then slide folder behind the filter (cut out towards filter base) from the front of the bike add a slight crease and the oil runs into the pan below.
Quick tip, get the fill plugs loose BEFORE draining oil! If it strips (trans) or breaks after you drain you're dead in the water.
Maybe I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure your suppose to fill the primary oil with the bike level not on the stand like the other two. Would explain why you didn’t need much too.
Very good information for me as a novice
If ya fold up a big sheet of foil into something 4 times thicker then mold it into a gutter it works pretty good!!
this was actually fun to watch. You are funny and cute AF!!
THANK U
"To bust that nut" and b mittens is what got me here. 🤣🤣🤣 great job on this video.
The thinking behind pre-filling the filter is that there will be a brief moment where no oil is being pumped into the engine. As Harleys don't use pressure-lubricated bearings I can't see the point, nor a way to do it without spilling oil. There is also no load on the engine at this point and I have never seen evidence of not filling it causing a problem - oh, and the Official Harley Workshop and User Manuals don't mention it.
awesome video. what brand or where did you buy the aluminum engine oil-fill cap?
I really wish the videos for my ironhead sportster were this clear and concise
My kind of chick.
Keep them videos coming.
Thanks
Brilliant ✌️😎
Do you use a torque wrench when replacing drain plug bolts, or go by feel?
Do you have to screw down the transmission stick to read it correctly or just sit it on top?
Hi I left a message Earley I ment to say you should put a little oil in the filter and put some oil on the Gossett so that it will be easier removing the next time you change oil with about auttle bit of oil in the filter makes it easier to start.
Turn that rubber piece on the frame so the flat spot faces outward and your jiffy stand will be easier to find. It's at 2:10.
Try using a cut to size 32 oz plastic coke bottle for oil drainage from the filter
