Dude I just don't even fucking understand how Omar can play the way he does. The guy is such a beast and just totally fucking different. Like he learned to play on another planet
He’s said in a few interviews that he doesn’t like the sound or paradigm of guitar so he tries to make it sound like / plays it like different instruments.
Its the arpeggios right after the intro that blows my mind, like the control of dynamics you have to have to play those tricky riffs so soft then slowly bring in the attack.
Blake Flemming got this song in a way that Thomas Pridgen never could. Wish we could have heard Jon Theodore play this live. Also it'll never be the same without Ikey.
Pretty sure he was the one who wrote these drum parts. A lot of amputechture came from old material that they taught to Jon Theodore, which I don't think went down well and contributed to him leaving. Not sure how true that is but read something along those lines years ago!
Writing a song is one thing, but composing this is another. Guitar and percussion better than ever, Cedric, although not in tune at times suits the live performance perfectly. Hats off to Omar
This video reminds me about the importance of thinking outside the box. There's something about Blake's hair that makes him look cool kicking ass on those drums.
The noise intro here was so delicious. And Blake Flemming is my favorite drummer for this song (too bad it didn’t worked out for him being their full-time drummer).
Jon replaced Fleming... and then Fleming came back when Jon quit... Blake is the original drummer of the mars volta...the beats for roulette dares...cicatriz esp ...and others... are his... Cedric said that they coudnt tell Jon that these were Blake's beats 'cause he'd get mad aahahah Thanks for uploading !
Henry is the type to keep things old school to keep them punk genuine. Likely on purpose the VHS video quality so new kids can't easily claim any of what's NOT THEIRS. XD
Jon Theodore got that “ritual drumming” groove that their other drummers seem to lack. That said, I like Blake Flemming the best for the Amputechture era songs specifically.
The difference in the newer live performances, aside from Jon not playing drums, as opposed to this one, boils down to dynamics. Pridgen is insane… Of course. But I feel like he’s all balls all the time and doesn’t care to lighten the load when necessary. After watching a few of these, it’s clear that chemistry is key to the dynamics Volta needs to sound like this 👆
Tell me it's over, Rusbel awaits I've been to the surface And nothing is there, Eyelids sank muffled In the nerve aura sound, But when she awakes Will she still be with us? I always figured the lyric was actually "They'll check my wrist, I'll FEINT a pulse . I'm not the human, You thought I was." Same sound but one means to make a deceptive move. I thought it made sense in the context of the devil lying within a body, and him pretending to be an actual human.
@@ExternusArmyI believe what you’re hearing is the correct one. Not the first nor the only time that the band misinterpreting the message that the Other projected to Cedric, I feel.
But Blake rejoined the band while they were recording Amputechture. This was actually probably one of his last performances with them before Deantoni Parks briefly joined for a few months.
I've been looking for this episode of the Henry Rollins Show in HD. Seriously, these guys gave an amazing performance, but all we can watch of it is of this terrible sound and video quality.
is there an audio rip from this broadcast that doesn't sound like trash? ( no offense to uploader but it's hard to imagine the mixing was this bad on the original broadcast from 2006), Thanks

Paul Hinojos, who is also the bassist of At the Drive-In and formerly of Sparta. He joined on this tour and played through until the conclusion of the Bedlam in Goliath tour, as their rhythm guitarist and "sound manipulator" until being downsized along with Adrian Terrazas on woodwinds and shortly after Ikey Owens on keys.

Such wonderful performances of this and "Day of the Baphomets", I wonder if some day we could get a better quality version of them.
I think this is probably Cedric's best vocal performance
apart from some of the early album versions (some of the Deloused and Frances-era vocals were pretty rad)
that was so fucked how amazing that was and i feel richer for the experience
not really, but recently Cedric admitted that kicking Jon Theodore out of the Volta is the worst thing they've done.
Jon Theodore got that “ritual drumming” groove that their other drummers seem to lack. That said, I like Blake Flemming the best for the Amputechture era songs specifically.

Constricting his cells

Glycerin and turbulence
Stuffed the voice inside God
Mirrors to the animals
The sermon goes mourning, Pricking it's hail
Slothful the child, That preys on the seed
Shall behead the drought, Wound under sleeves
I hope you have room, In a thicket of vines
Give me a moment, To clean what you've stole
The streets will hang high, Stretch ribs and let taste

Mending the cuts of your prosthetic faith

Assume the form, You've given me and I'll spill
Now hold on, Just hold my hand
Say that they made you
But you brought your own leash
Tell me no more no, say I'm the last one
Outside, By the drift, You read my will
Of thread and itch, Failure to comply
As failure to decease
And still you won't know everything
I've built the fall
Sulking drained the fall of my pale will
Swarming by your steps
Licking the ankles of blasphemer guilts
It only meant to drape a plastic
Over the stuck pig scalp of head
To cover the sock where to flatline had spread
The kiosk in my temporal lobe

She says my map is home again, But torn face down
I have only but a million blemishes
To tell you all about
In the end they just gagged me
To make him come out
Gas me the hind, Of your five legged snare
Tooth picks the eye, But no things there
Down drags your waltz, Cross the alter top
From a sleep that, Depravation knew
Trespass your form, I'm void of dusk
I'd ask to look, But the mask stays on
You'll levitate, Teutonic print
Cruelty is the wrath, Of my instrument
In the end they just gagged me
To make him come out
You locked the cuffs
Arsenic erupts
Will you drink the shadow
Of my red hair
You and your falst, Witness to God
You've one in the chamber,
But your finger got stuck
Let slip the sound, Of a cry for help
But all was lost, On the night you walked
Palms speak through eyes
Serve your memory lost
I cantaminate with insignias
In the end they just gagged me
To make him come out
Glassolalia coats my skin

Stuffed the voice inside of God
