Dimmu peaked in 2001 - 2003 with the best line up they ever had. Including Mustis, Vortex and Nicholas. Already using real orchestras, but still powerful and just blasting everything away. 2007 In Sorte Diablo was a unfortunate/misfired concept album, whatever they wanted to do here, it just was not good. Then the answer to your question happened, the loss of Mustis and Vortex. To this very day they never recovered from this loss. I do not blame anyone here, as nobody knows what happened. But in the end, it surely was about (as always) just the money/royalties. Nothing more, nothing less. But they lost 2 unique trademarks, Mustis atmospheric keyboards and Vortex fantastic clean voice. Just listen to "The insight and the Catharsis" and everybody will know what I mean. Even back in 1997 both Mustis and Vortex already showing what they are capable of. They never recovered from this and still maneuvering around this fact with the overuse of orchestras and choirs. Choirs as a lukewarm replacement of Vortex clean vocals.
Hey man, I have to agree with your statement. That was in fact their best lineup and there absolute peak both in popularity and musicality. That's when I got into them (back in high school) and was in awe of Barker's contribution to the band's sound. Vortex's vocals were so good too! Downhill from then on if you ask me. I made a Studio Albums Ranking video on Dimmu where you can clearly see how I feel about these albums, lol! Thanks or watching and commenting!
Losing Mustis and Vortex was definitely a mistake. Any album after death cult Armageddon was anything but inspiring. For me, I can careless rather or not things are underground, though Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of filth, Satyricon all went to hell after receiving any kind of spotlight. Could it be the labels as well? I'm sure that has some to do with it. Unfortunate.
@@FrostBite3232 100% I feel the same way, new orchestral arrangements feel "stock". I also don't care if a band is underground or not as long as the music rocks, but you might be onto something.. on my Deicide Albums Ranking video I talk about how they half-assed recorded an album just to get out of a contract deal. They even went ahead and told people during their own concerts not to buy the album!
Hearing Enthrone Darkness Triumphant was a life-changing experience, it’s certainly one of those albums that could not be made today and no album could ever imitate the glory and success behind it.
They never fell for me. Still my favorite Black Metal band 20 years later. Their aesthetics, the sound, the feeling I get from a lot of tracks. They're perfect in my eyes. Have they missed some? Sure...but I don't care.
Valid point! There’s certainly low points I overlook on some of my all time favorite bands as well… we tend to be biased sometimes lol. You can’t touch 90s/00s Dimmu when it comes to aesthetics and production in black metal. Top tier for sure!
Yeah they mixed melodies, darkness and melancholy so greatly then and were ahead of its Time like Størmblast 2005 remake was so pretty, bitter, Dark and melancholic masterpiece, and totally different that Two albums before that so I love IT still so much ❤
I really dig In Sorte Diaboli. It’s a great follow up to Death Cult for me. I remember seeing them on the tour run for that album also and they were great! Enjoyed the video! Keep it up! 🤘
I've been listening to this band for twenty years. Each of their albums is interesting and unique for me. I understand that the band does not want and will not engage in self-copying of old albums. Нe is growing, developing and wants to declare himself in a new way. I really respect their way and music. They are great professionals. Stop sitting in the past, try to abstract from the old and accept their music in a new way without comparing it with their early work. It is very interesting what they will show in the new album. It's always unexpected, because each of their albums is unique
That is the entire point of this video, to look back and see what happened to Dimmu Borgir's popularity and status within the metal community. Much like Metallica, a lot of people (including myself) like some of the newer albums and agree with the fact that people, musicians and, in turn, bands and music, change and hopefully evolve/grow. But that doesn't necessarily resonate with the fandom. That being said, I am all for bands that evolve both musically and lyrically (Death comes to mind)! Music taste is always subjective the only thing we can analyze is technicality, composition, aesthetics and of course, acceptance. This is were Dimmu sadly shows a negative result. Thanks for watching and commenting Vlad!!
That's a silly idea, everyone compares certain years of a band, and even their own life. I recognize bands change, I can also recognize when bands pander to something which sells. Been listening to them for two decades as well, well past actually, so that's great for you if you are still a fan boy, but most of us have not and that is okay. You can enjoy the new ones as much as you want, but I am also willing to bet I would not agree with many of your opinions on black metal, so yeah...
A few notes: - EDT and SBD were not recorded and produced by Nuclear Blast. EDT was produced by the band and recorded by Peter Tägtgren, while SBD was recorded *and* produced by Peter. Nuclear Blast simply funded (which, of course, was extremely important) and released them. - EDT is the first album to feature Shagrath as lead vocalist, so he didn't change his voice, they changed singer, from Silenoz to him. - It's Spiritual Black Dimensions, not Spiritual Dark Dimensions (this, of course, was probably just an honest mistake on your part) - You say they "stripped all of the keyboards" out of Stormblåst 2005. What do you mean, exactly? There are keyboards in every song! I don't think you go into a lot of detail regarding the actual "rise" and "fall" of this band. After introducing "so what happened?" you go on to talk about an album that you seem to really enjoy. This video seems more like a brief overview of what you like or dislike about each of their records. I'm sorry if I seem overly critical, but it seems to me that you're a huge fan of the band and probably know a lot more about them than you show in this video so there's a lot of potential that you don't use! I'd suggest doing a bit more research so you avoid factual errors, and try to elaborate more on your points to sufficiently answer the question you're posing. You're still getting a like and a subscribe because you seem like a good dude and UA-cam needs more people talking about this *FANTASTIC* band so keep at it, my guy
Whats up my dude! Thanks for the elaborate comment. I know it comes from a good place and I appreciate the constructive criticism. Most of these have been addressed in various different comments but it’s mainly because of poor choices of words on my end. Like the producing part I did mean they were funded by NB and that made them sound better, I guess I could have gotten more into detail but felt I needed to keep the video short. Then the keyboard thing I meant they had to strip all the “copied” parts which happened to be my favorite parts of the songs and as far as SBD I must have been nervous (this was one of the first videos in which I talked into the camera this much) but after hearing it a few times I do believe I said “Black” it just came out weird lol. Now as far as the Shaggrath voice thing I meant it changed within the album, I know he became the vocalist on EDT but on the first few songs he uses a different vocal technique, more raw and raspy (for lack of a better word) and then changes it to a more “relaxed” technique which he has kept for years to come. I think I have gotten better as a UA-camr (or so I hope) and hope you will continue to watch and comment on some of my newer videos! Thanks for watching and commenting my dude! Metal on! 🤘🏻
I'll add some notes too: -Stormblast MMV was completely re-recorded (and again, with Peter Tagtgren) and was still in norvegian. -Before EDT there was EP "Devil's Path" - their first record in english
I got into Dimmu Borgir back in 2002 too when I started at university. There I had internet (which I did not have at home) and living with my brother we just got DSL so I spent a good time in online forums talking with metalheads. The first extreme metal bands I listened to were Moonspell, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir and Emperor. Then Dimmu released PEM, and damn, my ears were really not accustomed to such heaviness and crisp shinny production. But everything was so masterfully done, so catchy and so talented that I still regard that one of the all time best extreme metal albums ever. Dimmu is one of the bands I have been following closely, and yes, I admit they changed their sound a lost, but I'm not a purist that requires all bands to sound the same during their career. On the contrary, my favorite bands vary their style with each release, and each album almost fits perfectly in the time period it was written and recoded. And that's how you should appreciate music, with cultural/historical context in mind. I love their old stuff and love their new stuff. So, I have enjoyed what they have put out, but the last album Eonian is a thorough disappointment. Nothing memorable about it, and all the clean singing are back tracks with choir. There is simply too much choir in the damn album. Like, is it that hard for them to get a good talented session vocalist to do studio work and live shows ? At this point, they could just disband and I would not be upset. There is plenty of great metal elsewhere.
Those were the times man... That's interesting though, most people here have commented great things about Eonian! I guess that's what makes music so great!
I prefer the older albums too, but I still appreciate the newer stuff for what it’s worth. Most singers have to change their style up as their body gets older and they can’t perform vocally like they used to. I like the esoteric theme of Eonian. Always got love for ole’ Dimmu.
Cool, you definitely have a point there. I didn't care for the direction they took but Eonian is the only album I'm missing from them. Until I actually own it I won't really give it an honest chance. Maybe it's good that I took some time apart from them...
I went through their entire discography like about 7 years ago. Spiritual Black Dimensions is my favorite Dimmu album by far. It just feels like the right balance of synths, heaviness, drama and vocals. The intro to Reptile and the amazing multiple phases of The Insight And The Catharsis are the best parts, with notable mentions: the dramatic piano play of The Promised Future Aeons, and the dreamy conclusion that is Arcane Lifeforce Mysteria. Every single song in there is still worth a listen. Nothing is skippable.
It took a while for it to grow on me but once it did I was hooked. It really showcased Mustis’ ability as a performer and composer while remaining heavy and sort of raw. I would say it is the best balance between the first albums and their best lineup… It’s not my favorite album but I can’t disagree with your logic! Thanks for watching and commenting! I’ve made a studio albums ranking (that should be updated) if you’d like to check it out. You might enjoy it 😁. I’d love to see your ranking as well! Cheers.
I got into black metal because back in 2012 when I was in high school, classmate recommended me to give it a go. I looked some bands up on Google, gave them and listen and Dimmu was the one I liked most. In 2016 I started listening to their older stuff, Enthrone Darkness Triumphant and Spiritual Black Dimensions in particular. Spiritual Black Dimensions is what made Dimmu easily #1 band for me. Mustis' Keyboards and Vortex's voice in some songs were what I liked most. I was dealing with a lot of depression back then. Listening to that regularly helped me a lot to get on my feet. Since then, I have bought most of their albums (both CD and vinyls), plenty of shirts, and even got a tattoo of band's name with pentagram in between on my arm. Their last two albums were pretty meh compared to 90's albums but I still listen to them regularly. Makes me wish I was born in 70's or 80's so I could have seen their shows while they were in their prime. edit: Video title reminds me of part of the lyrics in their "Ætheric" song. "All rise and fall..."
I can totally relate my bro! Awesome stuff, I think there were three Dimmu chapters. Chapter 2 was very different from chapter one but it was awesome nonetheless, chapter 3 is just lame to me...
Have you seen the concert they had in 2011, "Forces of the Northern Night," with the Norwegian Broadcasting Orchestra (KORK), which was broadcast for free on Norwegian TV, NRK? It was an absolutely fantastic concert.
That was actually one of the first albums I got from them when it first came out! and just recently bought it again to revisit it... you'll be seeing it in an upcoming "unboxing CDs" video!!
Everything you're saying is right in the spot. Just want to say. I personally love Dimmu Borgir (stuff till In Sorte Diaboli). If comparing with Cradle Of Filth (another hated band because untrue) Cradle Of Filth still sound kinda interesting despite being commercial these days, but Dimmu sadly isn't. It's something about guitar riffs (lacking catchy riffs) and weird symphonic part. I think a lot of people around the world would be happy if Dimmu returned to the Misanthropia style or even maybe Enthrone style.
I know I would! I loved those Dimmu periods although I understand that the musicians are not the same and of course they have different styles... Enthroned was SO awesome though! Thanks for watching and commenting!
the guitar riff from the last album is still good for me, for example the empyrian phoenix, but if u compared with the old one, uh you know i mean i wouldn't comment anything. i think they still good if they play without the orchestra, but people change and growth old every band is less attractive compared the old one including marduk, behemoth
We all love dimmu borgir because the band exist . They never changed their sound honesty. Did they have to make changes for losing mutis and vortex. Absolutely a difference but they're still Dimmu Borgir and Shagarth lyrics and Vocals are still godly. Also the two remaining guitarist are amazing. Especially the bald guy with the mustache. Fucking nasty in Old Man's Child
They definitely changed after Mustis and Vortex. I love the first two Old man’s child albums. Kinda lost track of them but I should definitely revisit that band! 🤘🏻
Wow, I've never known that they stole the melodies what finally was the reason that the new Stormblast album is without keys. Very interesting. Actually my favorite album still is Spiritual Black Dimensions. In my opinion at that time they had the best constellation of members. I always feel that Astennu and Mustis were a perfect symbiosis adding so much depth to the instrumental parts. Also ICS Vortex added a whole new dimension with his unique singing technique and voice character. Since they're all gone their songs can't reach me not even for 1%.
Oh yeah, it was a whole thing back then... Undeniable although some people still try to defend Dimmu.. They were great melodies, no doubt! SBD Was definitely a turning point and added a whole new depth to the band! I'm still partial to the first three albums (as you can see on my Dimmu Album Rankings video) But I loved Dimmu MKII (SBD, PEM & DCA) Different but Great stuff nonetheless, proving that change on itself is NOT a bad thing! It's just the direction they took as of late that most old school fans don't enjoy... You get it! Thanks for watching and commenting!
New albums are good in their own way, I think that older and newer albums are both good. We all usually tend to like first ones and those become very important to us so we cant handle the change. Personally I find all Dimmu albums very good.
Hey dude! We obviously have different takes on this and that’s ok! I understand what you mean cause that happens to me with other bands for sure. Cannibal Corpse for example. I didn’t like their newer stuff cause it was different but I was able to push through and now I love it! Dimmu sadly didn’t do that for me. But I’ll tell ya, after this video a friend lent me in sorte diaboli and even though I didn’t like it, it rekindled my love for old Dimmu and bought all the albums except the last three. I might eventually get them though so I can truly analyze them
@@PatPosse Hello and thank you for an answer! I have to admit that it is true that older 3 albums are the best ones. The three last ones are ok/good (in my opinion), I like Eonian very much it is kind of mix of oldschool black metal vibes/riffs hidden in it and new wave symphonic mixture dark tunes. Of course everything is in our own tastes, but I recommend you to get last three albums and give em a try =)
@@saulahva1767 hey man! No problem i love interacting with people! (Otherwise I’m in the wrong business hahaha) i promise I will eventually give them a shot! Right now I am listening to For All Tid a lot and I have Death Cult ready for a future CD unboxing video 💪🏻. That’ll be a blast from the past lol. I bought it when it first came out but gave it away years ago 😅. Cheers man!
Actually, it's not bad at all, I did enjoy listening! That was great! And well, personally I'm not a huge fan of their symphonic black metal genre but it was good nonetheless. Like album, I'm not sure which but I guess the old ones were even better! And besides, your channel deserves a lot more of subcribers, I'd love to support! And I guess, you're gonna improve everyday!

I love the older albums from the 90s for the atmosphere, and I love the 00s albums for the songwriting and technical performances. Still the same band, but different approaches and you could tell they were looking for something different. I actually really like In Sorte Diaboli but I know that album is very hit or miss with some people. Once half of the band left in 2009, I don't think they ever truly recovered. I think some of what they've done in the 2010s, like playing with an entire orchestra on stage at Wacken was cool, but as far as Abrahadabra goes, I just couldn't do it. Eonian I think was a step in a better direction, but still it felt very disjointed and lacked a lot of what I enjoyed about the band. Hopefully we get a new album soon and they go one step further with it. But if not, I'm very happy with those first seven records.
There you go. That’s a great attitude towards them! I don’t hate them for changing. I just didn’t like the new stuff as much (as most people) I guess what really bugs me is that they were definitely one of my favorite black metal bands at one point. These last albums I didn’t even bother checking out lol. I said I’d give them a shot but it’s not easy 🤣. Thanks for watching and commenting brother. Metal on!
Well, firing the best metal drummer, Barker, then Mustis and Vortex, was absurdly stupid. (Also Astennu parting ways was unfortunate, he had been their best guitarist.) PEM was their peak. Then, for some stupid reason, instead of following the innovative trajectory they started with PEM, they stagnated with DCA and even went backwards with ISD. Such a shame.
This video was pretty spot on for the most part. I’ll be a die hard Dimmu fan for the rest of my days, but the last couple albums weren’t the greatest. Either way they made some amazing black/melodic/symphonic metal over the years.
Oh dude undeniably! They had some amazing peaks during their career! Even when they changed most of their members and style they still managed to kick some major ass! Change is not the problem. The path they took lately is.. thanks for watching and commenting!
I am a huge Dimmu Borgir fan and I agree that Death Cult Armageddon was their last good album. However, I listened to In Sorte Diaboli a lot because I really loved Hellhammers drumming. I actually saw them live with him on drums and was blown away.
Great video! I missed the poll but would 100% vote for old Dimmu. Their newest content seems too different compared to before, almost a different band entirely with all the lineup changes but maybe the music scene changed too.
There's probably a little of this, a little of that... The constant lineup changes probably helped them lose their Original Dark Essence and Epicness but I don't know if new metalheads would approve a band like old Dimmu. But it was great then and it's definitely helped shape and define a genre... Thanks for watching and commenting!
Met these guys in their practice studio, introverted as hell, but probably some of the most open minded people I’ve met, also very eager to see new bands rise. Truly some of the nicest, seemingly normal people I’ve met.
@@PatPosse mainly it was the rhythm guitarist, engaging, but not overly extroverted of forceful. Shagrath almost appeared like he soared over on a cloud of unknowable kindness, watching me scroll through his outfits while marveling at the craftsmanship. The drummer mostly sat in the background observing our behavior since he didn’t really speak English, all of them were awesome, even though they were far from being down to earth, which I’m personally a fan of.
Hey man! Yeah it’s cool but that’s why it wasn’t mentioned. It’s a compilation and not a studio album. On this video and the ranking video I focused on the studio albums only as they are the only ones that really matter.
*If you want to hear what Dimmu Borgir would have sounded like if they never sold out then go listen to the incredible band called Sear Bliss from Hungary... They were like a classic Dimmu Borgir from a parallel universe!*
I actually really agree with this list. Pretty bummed about their later 3 albums. It was definitely in a direction I didn’t care for 🫣 I didn’t hear Dimmu until 2006 so most of what I heard was from their Nuclear Blast albums up to that point, which are my favorites. They got me through a rough time in life. So nice to find others that still appreciate them.
Hey there! Yeah I guess we caught the tail end of the epic and dark Dimmu Borgir when they sounded the most brutal while having great orchestrations adding depth to some awesomely produced albums. Sad to say those days are long gone now…
Just yesterday I was showing this album to an ex member of my band, a great friend from High School. We grew up together listening to all these bands and he ABSOLUTELY HATED IT! Hahaha we seem to be majority in that sentiment but music is definitely subjective and what's awesome to me is not necessarily awesome to everyone else. That's what makes it so great! Agree to disagree here.. Thanks for commenting!
@@PatPosse Yes I have no problem with that, DImmu being a old BM band means them going for a new direction will upset the pure BM fans. I'm a fan of BM but also symphonic bands like Septicflesh, Epica, Therion etc. And Dimmu has made essentially a Blackened Symphonic Metal album in Eonian, rather then a Symphonic Black Metal album.
It's so nice to be able to respectfully share opinions online... I don't like the new stuff but I can understand where you are coming from and why you enjoy it!
Personally I have to disagree about SBD! I bought the pentagram shaped limited CD back in the day and I loved every second of it. The next album after that I agree put them on the map but EDT and SBD are my two favourite. Just my opinion. Great video dude
Thanks bud! Glad you enjoyed the video! That’s awesome that you have that CD, it’s a rare gem nowadays 💪🏻. In hindsight I should have addressed that album since it was very influential for what was to come later on their discography. EDT is #1 in my book. Check out my Dimmu Borgir Studio Albums review video if you get a chance. You might enjoy it ! Thanks for watching and commenting 💪🏻
I discovered this band in May of 1998 when I lived in Memphis, Tennessee. The first song I heard was "Mourning Palace," on a dial up modem. I was able to see them at Ozzfest 2004, here in San Antonio, Texas. As a long time fan, I liked ETD and GSG; however when the SBD album was released in 1999 their sound completely changed with ICS Vortex and Mustis. As Galder and Nick Barker joined the band in the early 2000's for PEM and DCA....Dimmu had the ultimate lineup. When their 2007 album was released even though with Hellhammer on the drums, it didn't appeal to me like the others. The only thing that was hard to get used to at the beginning of the 2010's was the absence of ICS Vortex's clean vocals and Mustis' keyboard playing. Since the SBD album that was a big part of the band's sound and style. I remembered when their 2010 album was released...........I felt this was the FALL of the band. So after an eight year absence of no new studio album releases, the album Eonian(2018) was breath of fresh air and I like the line up. Eonian to me is the RISE of Dimmu and "Lightbringer'' is my favorite song.
Hey man! Thanks for the elaborate comment. Love these! I can probably agree 100% with this... I actually just uploaded a Dimmu Borgir Studio Albums Ranking and I addressed some of this. I loved Nick on DM, Hellhammer (though one of my fav Black Metal players) happened to be in one of the worst Black Metal albums I've listened to haha (jk it's not THAT bad, just not my cup of tea) Eonian was a pleasant surprise to say the least! Ps: ahhh the dial-up days... that was exactly my experience too!
I was in highschool (2009-2010) when I started listening. There were 4 music videos I saw online that changed my perspective completely on metal. I started off with 80's slayer and 90's cannibal corpse. Then this one night I was browsing rockabilia for more band shirts and somehow got onto a page that led me to a couple videos. Amon Amarth's pursuit of vikings, Kataklysm's Venom, Behemoth's Alas the Lord is Upon Me, and Dimmu Borgir's the Serpentine Offering. That song off of what was at that time their latest album got me into them. From there I started to progress backward in their discography as my tastes acclimated to the different styles I had just started listening to. After a few years mourning palace became an album that was intrinsic to that time in my life, and still inspires me to this day. My favorite album as a whole is spiritual black dimensions. The melodies and ICS vortex's vocals just made for so many epic's on that album that I could listen to repeat on for the rest of my life. Unfortunately, as you said, In Sorte Diaboli was their last good album. So by the time I got into them they had already released all of their really solid music. I envy you for having been a listener while they were still dropping good albums! Metal on \m/
Hey Kaylan, love these comments! The coolest part about being around as a fan during the PEM and DCA years was the fact that you could look forward to more awesome music and maybe even catch them live. They were at their peak as far as production, sound and image. They were definitely spearheading the BM scene influencing bands to polish they sound and aesthetics beyond the corpse paint and battle axes. Fun times for sure!
As someone who got into Dimmu via OG Stormblast and For All Tid, I have to say my favorite albums are... their first 4, and yes that includes Spiritual Black Dimensions. I can hardly choose between their 90s full lengths, they're all just that good.
I agree 100% with everything you said. In fact I’m doing a ranking in their albums soon and you’ll see my breaking points are the same as yours hahaha. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@PatPosse I can hardly wait for your top albums, dude. As a random fact, alongside Lordi, Dimmu Borgir is one of the 2 bands that got me into music, more specifically keyboards and harsh singing. That said, epic jamming you did in that video. I'd be lying if I said I didn't start playing alongside you during Mourning Palace. XD
Eonian is the most detailed and sophisticated Dimmu album. They had 8 years to produce that and the result is amazing. I_Am_Sovereign alone worth an album. Dimmu borgir has always been about evolution, upgrade, and change of style. That's why they are the most unique band. They never repeat an style. No two albums are even remotely similar. At times, they might not have the black metal label but it does not matter cause they are doing what they should.
I agree with them always pushing their limits and boundaries… I can respect that. I don’t care for the direction they took and I wouldn’t necessarily call it “evolution” but that’s just me… glad YOU enjoy it though!
Close enough to how I seen things too, and for me, the first three or four albums, were such of such importance to my BM beginnings, I'll never talk shit about Dimmu. Good going guys, I still love what yous were back then, even if musically my interests moved on (or back maybe). New sub. Thanks
Awesome, I agree with you, I still love them for what they were and what they meant to me and the impact they had on me. I still listen to the first 3 albums consistently and they were definitely one of the 2 bands that got me into Black Metal on the first place... Thanks for subbing bud!
Old Dimmu was pure gold, but I also enjoyed some of their newer stuff when I was bored with heavier music in the black metal genre and needed a glass of light wine .
I agree with you bro. 100% they used to be so good, just like the old CoF...good old days of dial-up and waiting days to download concerts and music videos
Was that awesome or what?! The anticipation, waiting for that bar to hit 100%, being able to listen to new music online! it was a whole ordeal and it made us SO happy. (except when you waited for days to watch that music video that turned out to be porn 🤬) remember that?!
@@PatPosse hahahahaha yes I remember it all... good time indeed. I do miss trading CDs too lol and pandora in the early 2000s with the predictive algorythms that actually worked! Hahhahhaa that's how I discovered Suffocation... my life changed after that hahaha
@@pfortunich I'm still very actively collecting CDs, they might make a comeback when people start having to re buy the vinyl they just bought cause it's wearing out... Cds are easier to store, cheaper and last way longer! Don't get me wrong, I love Vinyl but yeah...
I have really enjoyed all of their albums: even Aeons. I realize it's all subjective but I have really liked all of it. There are some that go heavier and faster, but hey, yah can't go Barker tempo on everything haha! Good video and I can see you're a fan
Fair enough! It is subjective and if you like all the albums, that’s all that matters 🤘🏻. I am definitely a fan but I feel older Dimmu better represents what I expect to hear from a black metal band. Mid-Dimmu is just some awesome black metal with other influences and amazing arrangements and production. I just couldn’t vibe with their “newer” (it’s been 15 years!!) stuff… thanks for watching and commenting 💪🏻
Nice Queen poster! I am a fan of Queen myself and early 1970-ies rock! 20 years ago my friends introduced me to black, death metal grindcore etc...Dimmu Borgir, Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, Satyricon etc...Great stuff! Favorite album from Dimmu Borgir - Spiritual Black Dimensions! Favorite song - Arcane Lifeforce Mysteria and instrumental from early EP Inn I Evighetens Mørke part1! Cheers!
Nice!! Yeah brother Queen is the best band ever. Lots of Queen content on my channel. Even have a "Queen Chronicles" segment on my channel were I talk about Queen and their albums, different stories, etc. Hope you swing by and enjoy it! About Dimmu Borgir, that rare instrumental EP is awesome!

That is true for so many black metal heads! me included! not the first but one of them! Hope you check out my Ranking video on their discography tomorrow!!
I was going to mention that you forgot to discuss the plagiarism issues with Stormblast, but you briefly addressed them later in the video. Two songs were plagiarized. The re-recorded version was done with Hellhammer on drums.
Oh yeah, I actually spoke about it a bit more when I did the Albums Ranking video but yeah it sucks that they were plagiarized. most of them were my favorite parts too... 🤦♂
It happened the same to me, Kings of The Carnival Creation was the first song I heard, and blew up my mind!! fan since that day, to the end of my days.. EDT will be the best, and yes, some decay started after PEM, but i think a couple of songs in each album afterwards are always good enough to keep hope !
That's awesome! They have definitely changed over the years... I miss early 2000's Dimmu were they were getting that modern and heavy sound but still managed to have some of that 90's era darkness and atmosphere...
DCA was just a blistering record. I got lost in amongst the soaring melodies, the crushing riffs, and the juxtaposition of the rasping lead vocals versus the gloriously clean sections provided by Vortex. Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse is up there amongst not just my favourite black metal tunes of all time, but my favourite tunes of all time period. The way its arranged still, to this very day, sets the hairs on the back of my neck standing up, and causes goosebumps on my arms. I LOVE it.
And I agree with you! I think it was the pinnacle of what they wanted to do "symphonic Black Metal" I think Vortex and Mustis were at their creative high and it just came together perfectly on Death Cult. It fed off PEM and just grew bigger and better... I might like one over the other depending on the day (I made a Dimmu Albums ranking video) but I see them as the breaking point for them..
I still remember the first time i ever listened to DB at the entrance of my highschool, a friend bought DCA and came with the collector edition album. It instantly became my favorite album of all time and I still listen to it all the time.
You got it wrong, they didn't strip Stormblast 2005 from the keyboard parts, they just left or replaced that rip-off/plagiarism solo keyboard parts, which are like 2 tracks at maximum. They also didn't replace norwegian with english on the re-recording, I don't know where you got that from.
True. I've already talked about it on a different comment. I have no idea where that came from, total brain fart. I know for a fact that they have re recorded it in Norwegian. I apologize. I meant to say that they wanted to remain "kvlt" by doing the lyrics in Norwegian and switched to English when they saw that they could actually make money playing to a broader audience. But yes, Stormblast was never recorded in English. As far as the keyboards what I said is that they stripped the keyboards and had to re record them completely omitting of course all the plagiarism haha. Thanks for watching and commenting!!
@@PatPosse Yeah, it's ok man. They actually switched to english to broaden the audience on Enthrone already, and I'm ok with that. Enthrone got me into their music in the first place. I have a strangely similar history with their music to you - I started with Enthrone in 2002, In Sorte Diaboli was still ok to me, but I wasn't hooked that much. Abrahadabra was a major switch off, I thought they totally sold out themselves. The only difference was that I kept track with them with Eonian and I actually think they went back in time a little bit, some elements from the older albums, probably deliberate, but I don't care. I like that album, but of course I'm not that die-hard fan like I was some 20 years ago :)
Haha I hear ya brother! I keep meaning to but I gotta get Eonian to at least give it a fair shot! I might even like it 🤷🏻♂️. Enthroned is my favorite album by them and I am glad they switched to english! I’m still trying to figure out what the songs on the first two albums are about 🤣🤣
I totally agree with you dude when abrahcadabrah dropped i was done with the band too. The only difference for me is puritanical is their black album to me.... \m/
Great videos dude!! Demon Burger was my introduction into the dark world. My best buddy showed me them.. I was about to through a surprise exorcism for him, but it was too late, they got me as well, and I'm still a fan :) Cheers man. Metal on dudes!!
Killer Jeff!! Yeah, one of the first two bands that got me into Black Metal! Definitely legendary! Sucks that they sold out SO hard... I mean, from singing in Norwegian to remain "Kvlt" to this..........
@@PatPosse No I didn't really man, but not for any reason though I have to say, I just haven't listened to them for a while. This got me back in tho so I'm sure I'll giver on the last two as well!
You and I bro! We were there way back and remember why we fell in love with Dimmu and how we felt as they evolved! Younger dudes don't get that, they know Dimmu as what it is today but can't feel the betrayal we felt back then hahaha. I think most of us old time Dimmu fans agree for the most part! Thanks for watching and commenting, glad you enjoyed it! Check out my Dimmu Studio Ranking video if you can, you might enjoy it!
@@PatPosse completely agree man! I’ll definitely check out your other videos and definitely the Dimmu Studio Ranking one! Keep it Black Metal, brother! I am interested in what your thoughts are regarding Behemoth. Dimmu and Behemoth were the first Black Metal bands I really gravitated to when that scene was new to me. Unlike Dimmu though, I found myself listening to Behemoth more constantly. Satanica and Zos Kia Cultus are still my favorites to this day. I stopped listening for a bit after The Apostasy and Evangelion, but where I believe Behemoth redeemed themselves was in The Satanist. That brought me back. \m/
@@sataniclegion Nice man! I never fully got into Behemoth, I do own some of their albums but I was always more of a Death Metal guy. Dimmu and Immortal where the first extreme metal bands I got into so I got into Black Metal first, Emperor, Mayhem, 1349, Dark Funeral, DarkThrone, you know, the classics. But as my guitar playing evolved I turned into Death Metal for a more challenging (and rewarding) genre. I do try to incorporate Black Metal into most of my songs cause I'll always love classic Black Metal! How do you feel about Old Men's Child?
@@PatPosse Emperor, Satyricon, Dark Funeral, Dark Throne, Mayhem, Immortal, Gorgoroth, Xasthur, were some of the bands I listed to early on as well. Old Man’s Child was good because I liked Galder’s guitar playing and solos, but I didn’t stick with that band for much longer after In Defiance of Existence. As far as non-black metal, Cannibal Corpse, Nile, and Early Children of Bodom (R.I.P. Alexi) were stepping stones for me as well.
Thank you! Glad you do! You’d probably agree with my Dimmu Borgir albums ranking also then lol. It’s in my channel if you want to check it out and comment! Thanks for watching !
Well said about Puritanical and Death Cult, for me these would be their 2 strongest albums and best line-up, some might consider it mainstream, I consider it as more of a time where they finally mastered their sound / song writing. Kings of Carnival was the first song I heard from them, and being a musician myself I was blown away by it all, especially the drums and keyboards. I was listening to stuff like Morbid Angel, Deicide, and Cradle of Filth at this time, so extremely fast drumming and black metal weren't new to me, but Dimmu just did it so much better in this era of their existence. After those two albums, the newer stuff was "ok" but nothing compared to the pure talent / aggression we heard from Puritanical and Death Cult.
Thanks man! I agree! A lot of people say I’m against change or “evolution” but they changed drastically from the Enthroned Darkness triumphant days and still I love that sound. Best line up, the most brutal they ever were!!
i saw dimmu live in 2002 in seattle, they invited me and a few buddies on their tour bus after where they fed us and we got drunk with them. super cool guys all of them.
Hell yea. Discovering new music via Napster, Kazaa and Limewire. Those were the days. Followed by early metal message boards, I remember being a frequent poster on the Relapse Records board back in the early 2000s.
Haha right? It was awesome! We were definitely more invested and finding great new bands was rewarding and awesome. We would run to out friends and show off our new find and try to find more music by then or their band members… great times!
You missed out on the Godless Savage Garden album EP with 7 or 8 orig songs ( from memory) released in the late nineties. I have it on a hard drive i play thru a media player and transister amp/ 12 in hardwood speakers. My favorite album actually of all with Enthrone 2nd and puritanical 3rd.
That’s right. I do own it on cd but not vinyl. It did a lot for the band I just totally spaced out lol. Check out my Dimmu studio albums ranking video, you might enjoy it! 😁🤘🏻
Yes I understand,if you are a fan of dimmu borgir, and I have been listening to them right up from For all tid :- they don't sound that old cult, dark and symphonic theses days their music has really changed. I am not saying they are bad but I really miss the old dark sound. Thanks for making this video to make everyone feel how we both feel.❤️
Dude, your story about your mom finding your Dimmu album is almost just like mine lol. My mom found "Spiritual Black Dimensions" laying on the kitchen table (I was "studying" it the night before and forgot all about it) and found it on none other than Christmas morning. Needless to say I didn't get it back. Anyway, my feelings are about the same as yours. Kicking Mustis and ICS out was just stupid. ICS's vocals paired with some of their most symphonic choruses give me goosebumps every time. Abracawhatever just didn't do it for me and their last one I think I listened to maybe two tracks and just had zero interest in it. Hopefully they make a comeback someday. Bringing back Mustis and ICS would definitely peak everyones interest again.
I sold most of what I had with them some 10 years ago. Everything from Enthrone Darkness Triumphant and onwards. I don't mind that album and what come afterwards but I just didn't care for it much. I kept For All Tid and Stormblåst and still listen to them sometimes, because nostalgia perhaps. I also have and enjoy Devils Path which was a short EP they released between Stormblåst and Enthrone.
That’s awesome! That EP is rare! I love early Dimmu (like most people) but I just couldn’t get into the newer stuff. I still listen to the first three albums regularly 😁
If you summarize their career they have never repeated styles throughout their releases. That's what makes them unique. It would be a lot easier to release Enthrone Darkness Triumphant part 2 but it would be just making music just because. I've got their whole catalog and has remained my favourite band for the last 18 years.
I really like old Dimmu Borgir, especially Spiritual Black Dimensions and Puritanical because of the symphonic sounds with the keyboards, I love the haunting melodic orchestra in some older albums
One thing you forgot to mention about that “Puritania” song, it was featured in a famous CKY video, or some other skateboarding video in the same vein featuring Bam Margera..I remember they got a little more popular because of that exposure. I distinctly remember being surprised seeing it in a skateboard video at Zumiez when I’d go to the mall with my friends.
To each their own! Puritanical is a cool album! Not as good as the first three in my opinion but still a great album. Lots of great memories from back then 💪🏻
I started to watch the video thinking how much I don't agree with you, now that I watched... I totally agree with you!! 😂 Dimmu have changed, their image, their atmospheres, some of the key members.. But, I think also in the new albums there are some sparkle, some awesomeness here and there: they are ENORMOUS artists, Shagrath, Silenoz, Galder, they are geniuses and this kind of genius is still reachable in the new works. Not in every single note like Puritanical or Death Cult, of course, but there are still precious gems! Thanks to made me thinking about my idols ❤
Haha thanks man!! Always great when someone appreciates what I do even when they don’t necessarily agree with me or the premise to the video! Thanks for watching it and giving me a chance to explain my stance before cursing me out in the comment section lol!
I heard Mourning Palace on a promo CD from FYE at a local mall before I could drive myself there. 2nd life changing band for me. 22 years later im still digging deaper down the rabbit hole.
Thank you buddy! This video got a lot of love and a lot of hate but mainly and more importantly, it got a lot of traction! It got people talking and most of them were respectful when commenting which was awesome. I should definitely do more like these but I am afraid it'll tank and I'll get discouraged lol. I did a Dimmu Album Rankings video I was hoping would do well and it just flopped big time lol! What band would you like to see be analyzed? Thanks for commenting!
I think the problem with bands like Dimmu Borgir is that everybody want them to sound like they did 20 years ago. That's just not gonna happen. If you're not obsessed with your nostalgia, all the albums hold some merit on their own. Even Abrahadabra has it's moments. I mean, I still see people crying about "bring back Vortex and Mustis". People just refuse to move on it seems. And I honestly think the new album is great.
I will have to give them a listen. That's really not the case for me, I accepted Metallica, Megadeth and so many other bands' change with no problem. I think i am pretty objective as far as what I like and dislike, but I DO get what you are saying. I know 2 guys that claim that every bands' first 3 albums are the only good ones.... lol
@@PatPosse The thing is, many of these extreme bands are in their early twenties when they start out, and it's all about being young and angry. And then succes and the 30's happens, and they start to mellow out. There are of course exeptions to the rule, but it happens like 85% of the time. And on the flip side, bands that stick to their roots for 20 years gets crap for not renewing themselves. I mean, fuck.. just can't win. Haha

@@PatPosse Haha! I've seen Deicide live once and that sounds right. Great band as well
True.
Hearing Enthrone Darkness Triumphant was a life-changing experience, it’s certainly one of those albums that could not be made today and no album could ever imitate the glory and success behind it.
I agree 100%. It’s definitely one of those great genre defining albums that influenced a TON of bands! Ahead of its time ...
me too it really changed everything i know about music

My favourite album by them. Just has a special atmosphere.

Dimmu was the first BM band I ever loved. They pretty much got me into black metal. Still love them to this day after so many years.
Oh yeah man. Same here. I still love DM that’s why I’m so saddened by the path they took musically…
EVERYTHING BEGUN WHEN THEY FIRED BARKER.
Nick was a hell of a drummer! I sure hope he can be back behind the set soon!
Yeah they mixed melodies, darkness and melancholy so greatly then and were ahead of its Time like Størmblast 2005 remake was so pretty, bitter, Dark and melancholic masterpiece, and totally different that Two albums before that so I love IT still so much ❤
I dont know..
Clearly the lyrics research Is an important point.
Hanno sempre provato ad essere contemporanei...
Old dimmu is just perfect for me..love for all tid, Stormblast and Enthrone..
I agree with you. Great albums and groundbreaking !!
I actually enjoyed the revamped stormblast as well, from a nostalgia standpoint I guess. After that they just kinda lost it for me.
yeah...these albums are peak imo
I really dig In Sorte Diaboli. It’s a great follow up to Death Cult for me. I remember seeing them on the tour run for that album also and they were great! Enjoyed the video! Keep it up! 🤘
That’s awesome thanks man!! Check out this video, let me know what you think!!

I really don’t get the lack of love for this album. It ranks amongst one of my favorites.
You sound like an intelligent fan.
New stuff is trash. Last good thing they did was 2007.
Ok so if your favourite bands releases a literal bag of shit you will gladly buy it and say it's good. Lol dumbasses
A few notes:
- EDT and SBD were not recorded and produced by Nuclear Blast.
- It's Spiritual Black Dimensions, not Spiritual Dark Dimensions (this, of course, was probably just an honest mistake on your part)
- You say they "stripped all of the keyboards" out of Stormblåst 2005.
Metal on! 🤘🏻
I'll add some notes too:
-Stormblast MMV was completely re-recorded (and again, with Peter Tagtgren) and was still in norvegian.
Very wise, mature fan.
EDT - SBD - PEM
Their best run. Firing Vortex and especially Mustis was unforgivable.
I agree 100%!!
I love this band, i prefer the older stuff a lot more personally. Great video, Pat! Cheers! 🤘🏻🔥💪🏻🤜🏻🤛🏻
Damn right my brother!! I we all should like the old stuff better!! 🤘🤘
Have you seen the concert they had in 2011, "Forces of the Northern Night," with the Norwegian Broadcasting Orchestra (KORK), which was broadcast for free on Norwegian TV, NRK? It was an absolutely fantastic concert.
I did not. That does sound like something cool though...!

Death Cult is my favorite album by them
That was actually one of the first albums I got from them when it first came out! and just recently bought it again to revisit it... you'll be seeing it in an upcoming "unboxing CDs" video!!
The Barker Era, basically.
Edit: Subscribed! I bet we're probably the same age cause I agree with the video!
Haha thanks man, that rules! 🤘🏻 check out my Dimmu Borgir studio albums ranking video, you might enjoy that one too!
Cradles latest album, Existence is Futile is goshdarn AMAZING ./..
There even a vid on youtube of their guitarist playing guitar to the whole album
the guitar riff from the last album is still good for me, for example the empyrian phoenix, but if u compared with the old one, uh you know i mean i wouldn't comment anything.
i think they still good if they play without the orchestra, but people change and growth old every band is less attractive compared the old one including marduk, behemoth
You get it!

Metal on!
They are like Metallica now its evolved into a business not a band these days they seem to have lost what a band means anymore..the spirit
@@neilmaccanbell9813 yup. That’s it. It’s sad really but unlike Metallica, a lot of people like the newer stuff better…
Even though I do enjoy DCA I agree with everything you said here.
I love both the old and new and keep them all on regular rotation🤘🏻
Nice! I do listen regularly to their first 3 albums. The Mustis + Vortex era was great too but I played them a bit too much in my teens 😅.
I am a huge Dimmu Borgir fan and I agree that Death Cult Armageddon was their last good album. However, I listened to In Sorte Diaboli a lot because I really loved Hellhammers drumming. I actually saw them live with him on drums and was blown away.
Hellhammer is THE MAN! I understand completely…

@@PatPosse March 14th.
@@swxqt6826 this year? Wow. I would HAVE NOT expected them to be “down to earth” now… they have definitely changed.
@@PatPosse mainly it was the rhythm guitarist, engaging, but not overly extroverted of forceful. Shagrath almost appeared like he soared over on a cloud of unknowable kindness, watching me scroll through his outfits while marveling at the craftsmanship.
Sad to say those days are long gone now…
What happened to the underground band Dummi Birgir from Norway? I know they are a thing and i saw their band name on the NRK Urørt page.
🤣🤣🤣
Eonian is a masterpiece. The lyrics show that the band members have matured spiritually. They are past the edgy stage.

Hey Kaylan, love these comments! The coolest part about being around as a fan during the PEM and DCA years was the fact that you could look forward to more awesome music and maybe even catch them live. At times, they might not have the black metal label but it does not matter cause they are doing what they should.

you are truly speaking the truth in this video and well said too.

I discovered them in the 90s. When Vortex joined, that was something really special. I was surprised to see him go and lost interest.
I am with you on that. Once Vortex and Mustis left so did I lol

Gateways was my introduction to Dimmu Borgir i love that song < 3
Nice!!
If you know anyone selling a cd of Godless Savage Garden EP , let me know / lp will do if not ?
That’s right. I do own it on cd but not vinyl. It did a lot for the band I just totally spaced out lol. Check out my Dimmu studio albums ranking video, you might enjoy it! 😁🤘🏻
@@PatPosse Cheers champ ! By the way , how much would i have to pay for a copy and is it still in print anywhere ?
@@coopsawright7225 I guess it is, Here's on both CD and Vinyl! amzn.to/3WmYQyP
@@PatPosse legend ! cheers my friend !
😁😁 old Dimmu was awesome! Thanks for watching and commenting brother!
Sure always ❤️🙏
🤘🏻🤘🏻
Haha that’s awesome! Moms rule lol. 🤣 I wish they would come back… it doesn’t look good though 😣.
You know I'm not fan of that kind of metal, but your videos are inspirative and make me think about it🤘
That's awesome!! I hope to inspire people to inspire their musical horizons and dabble in the more extreme Metal genres! 💪🤘
awesome videos!👍🍺
Thank you!! I am very glad you guys are enjoying them!!
I love playing along to Puritania on the drums & my favorite song by them is, The Insight & the Catharsis. I've got all their albums.
Hell yeah! Killer album and the drumming on it is top notch 🤘🏻
Im not even ashamed anymore i love Dimmu Borgir AND raw black metal
Nor should you!! Different strokes for different folks! 🤘🏻 as long as you are supporting metal, I am happy! 😁🤘🏻
I remember begging my mom to buy me Enthrone Darkness Triumphant hahah loved that as a freshmen in high school
Haha nice! That’s when I first listened to it too! I was obsessed with it!
DIMMU BORGIR All Rise and Never Fall.
Take it All and No Regrets...BM 4 Ever🤘
That’s a hardcore fan there!
If you summarize their career they have never repeated styles throughout their releases. That's what makes them unique. It would be a lot easier to release Enthrone Darkness Triumphant part 2 but it would be just making music just because. I've got their whole catalog and has remained my favourite band for the last 18 years.
I definitely commend them for that. Same with Death, their albums are pretty different from each other…
I really like old Dimmu Borgir, especially Spiritual Black Dimensions and Puritanical because of the symphonic sounds with the keyboards, I love the haunting melodic orchestra in some older albums
Totally man! They had that epic darkness that was so awesome…
That’s awesome; I had no idea! I’m sure that gave them a push!
I love “puertanical misenthropia” and “abrahadabra “
To each their own! Puritanical is a cool album! Not as good as the first three in my opinion but still a great album. Lots of great memories from back then 💪🏻
The beginning of their career was great, the middle was fantastic and the later stuff is really good.
I can get behind that!
Those were the days man!! The amount of bands I got into because of sample cds!!
Not a black metal fan here... but maaan this band is killer... saw them in 04 ozzfest and stuck in my head ever since!!
For sure! I've loved them for decades at this point!
you are spitting the pure truth out of your mouth regarding all their albums! you should do that on other bands as well
Thank you buddy!
@@PatPosse Opeth and their fall with the last albums…
Never got into them 😣😣
@@PatPosse you didn't listened to Opeth by now?
I heard them, even saw them live but never cared for them.
I know 2 guys that claim that every bands' first 3 albums are the only good ones.... lol
@@PatPosse
The thing is, many of these extreme bands are in their early twenties when they start out, and it's all about being young and angry. And then succes and the 30's happens, and they start to mellow out. There are of course exeptions to the rule, but it happens like 85% of the time.
And on the flip side, bands that stick to their roots for 20 years gets crap for not renewing themselves. I mean, fuck.. just can't win. Haha
@@passionoflovers haha YES! "All their albums sound the same!" i agree with you 100%. Something about the drive of being young and pissed and broke...
@@PatPosse haha. One word: Dragonforce
@@passionoflovers LOL
I hate when people try and correct me when I’m saying “dimmu borgir” and tell me it’s pronounced “dimmu borger”
🤣 who knows how it’s pronounced 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤣🤣
