LYRICS
Once in your life you'll find her
Someone who turns your heart around
And next thing you know
You're closin' down the town
Wake up and she's still with you
Even though you left her way across town
You're wonderin' to yourself
Hey what've I found
When you get caught between the moon and New York City
I know it's crazy but it's true
If you get caught between the moon and New York City
The best that you can do (the best that you can do)
The best that you can do is fall in love
Arthur he does what he pleases
All of his life his master's toys
And deep in his heart
He's just he's just a boy
Livin' his life one day at a time
He's showing himself a really good time
He's laughin' about the way
They want him to be
When you get caught between the moon and New York City
I know it's crazy but it's true
If you get caught between the moon and New York City
The best that you can do (the best that you can do)
The best that you can do is fall in love
ABOUT CHRISTOPHER CROSS
Christopher Cross burst onto the music scene with his 1979 self-titled debut album produced by Michael Omartian. The lead single “Ride Like The Wind” spent 4 weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and was quickly followed up by Cross’ most popular single to date (and first #1 hit) “Sailing”, which later became known as the archetype for the Yacht Rock genre. In 1981, Cross became the first artist in Grammy history to win the “Big Four” most prestigious awards in a single night; Record of the Year (for the single “Sailing”), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also “Sailing”), and Best New Artist. Later that year Cross released “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” which he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer, Peter Allen, and was the title-theme for the 1981 film “Arthur” starring Dudley Moorre and Liza Minnelli. The song earned Cross his second #1 and the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 1981 Academy Awards. Cross’ sophomore album “Another Page” was released in 1983 and featured the singles “Think of Laura” and “All Right”. Cross has sold over 10M albums worldwide and his songs have been covered and sampled by NSYNC, Puff Daddy, Avant, Shirley Bassey, Dione Warwick, and many more.

I was sad I missed him last time he was in town. Hoping we’ll get a new album out of the pandemic. His last was released in 2018.
I listen to it at least once a month. Christopher Cross is a musical genius with a timeless voice.
I think it's a shame Dudley Moore has been forgotten by so many people. Incredible talent.
I’m so glad I haven’t.
I will never forget Dudley Moore. He was an amazing man. He overcame so many obstacles in his life and was very successful. Even in his last years, he fought that disease and always had hope.
It's going to happen to a vast amount of stars. if not all of them. The world keeps turning without them.
I had no idea that Dudley Moore played the piano. Wonderful song.

Life WAS simpler... and not just because I was 12 in 82... no social media, no internet... and the music was just BETTER.. singers that could actually sing and play their instruments, what a novel idea!
The first time I ever took a girl to the movies it was to see "Arthur". Now, more than 40 years later, I still always think back to that day whenever I hear this song and wonder where she is now. It's a little overwhelming to think back on all of the people who were so important to us at various points in our lives, but now exist only in memory.
But so beautiful that music keeps those memories alive…
😮🥰🥰🥰🥰So sweet to read that and how precious those memories must be for you!

I feel the same way you do for the people in our past from years ago and when a song that comes up reminds me of them or where I was in that point in my life. ♥️👍
Dudley Moore was actually a concert pianist. Very talented man. Christopher Cross is still going and is amazingly talented. I watched him do this song live. Wonderful. I still listen in 2024! Great movie as well!
Actually, a fine jazz pianist.
Amazed that I've gone my whole life without knowing this fact.
The actor who played Arthur, that magnificent multi talented Dudley Moore, backing the singer Christopher Cross, who happens to be one of the 4 composers of that enchanting melody, couldn't get a better combination, this is so great !!! Dudley on piano makes this extremely special.
“When you get caught between the moon and New York City.” One of the best lyrics of all time.
What does that mean? I love this song but never understood that line.
@@chills_etc1309It's a reference to what Buzz Aldrin said on the Apollo mission in 1969, he said if we ever get back to Earth safely, I'm going to visit New York City at Christmas time and hopefully their will be a full moon shining on the Hudson river and Neil Armstrong said to him well, instead of being caught between a rock and a hard place, you'll be caught between the moon and New York City 🧑🚀👨🏼🚀🧑🚀🌝🌜
@@TheKonga88Are you sure? I've just Googled and found a different account. Of course I don't know if that's true either!:
According to Peter Allen, he came up with the line when his plane got stuck in a holding pattern waiting to land at JFK airport in New York. In 2012, Songfacts heard from the flight attendant Susan Lina, who said, "Peter Allen was on my flight and when he was deplaning he said to me, 'You have inspired me to write a song, and you will know it when you hear it.' I believe this was the song, because we were in a holding pattern for JFK. I have been a flight attendant now for 34 years. This was back in the early '80s when I was only 21 or 22 years old. I did not know who he was until he was deplaning the aircraft. He was right, I did know the moment I heard the verse, when you get caught between the moon and New York City, because it was at night and we were in a holding pattern to land at JFK. I remember it so clearly."
@@newbarker523Correct. Peter Allen said the exact same thing while accepting the Oscar’s for this song, along with the co-writers.
@@newbarker523 Cool story but they obviously got the line from the astronauts first 🥳💃🏼

WOW What a treasure I never knew Dudley Moore appeared with Chris Cross let alone know that he could actually play the piano ! This is Fantastic!
We may never see something like this again!
You should take a look at Dudley playing some music from the film, Ten or at some of his jazz playing from the 60s. He was a monumentally talented musician. Organ Scholarship to Cambridge Uni as well.
@@spanishpeaches2930 Dudley Moore played piano in Johnny Dankworth's modern jazz band, led his own trio and was a prolific composer.

Sailing is another of his classics
I love the line, "The canvas can do miracles." If you've ever sailed, you know the feeling.
And Ride Like the Wind.
Great Classic. I have always tried to imagine sailing in real life because of this song. I never have, but have always wanted to.😊
When you get a chance, check out Christopher Cross live in Japan, 1986 his version of ride, like the wind his guitar solo is amazing

I've said a million times over and i'll always continue to say it as long as I draw breath: The 1980's was the best decade to be alive in. Sure lots of other decades were perfect for whomever grew up in them - some not unfortunately - but for me as a child of the 80's - the time was pure MAGIC
Agreed!
Today is March 4th and still listening to that song nobody could have done that movie better than Dudley Moore and nobody could have sang that song better then Christopher Cross rip Dudley Moore❤❤❤
So timeless to see Christopher Cross and Dudley Moore performing "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" live. The look that Cross gives to Moore when he says the lyric 'Arthur' is so great!
Yes. Classic. I never knew they did this duo performance.😊
Yes, I loved that part also. He teased him at least twice...
I appreciate that Christopher Cross could perform live and sound as good as his studio recordings.
Yes. Christopher Cross is an amazing musical performer. Live in concert or recording.😊
Even better live
Sounds like he's got a clothespin on his nose! Awful!
I thought he was phoning it in.
Arthur himself with the singer of his theme.
Omg, Dudley Moore was an incredible musician himself, but was a better comedy/drama actor. Dudley was certainly one of the very best actors to grace the movie screen and I miss him and his movies so much, hard to believe he's been gone for nearly 22 years (March 27, 2002).
