Sailing was recorded in 1979, utilizing the 3M Digital Recording System, making it one of the first digitally recorded songs to chart. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on August 30, 1980. The song won Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Arrangement of the Year, and helped Cross win the Best New Artist award. Produced by Michael Omartian, it features Tommy Taylor on drums, Andy Salmon on bass, Rob Meurer on electric piano, and Victor Feldman on percussion. In 1980, Sailing was released as a single in Latin America under the translated (en español) title "Navegando".
On the Howard Stern radio show, Cross explained that sailing with his friend got him away from the trials and tribulations of being a teenager. Cross said that if the guy had taken him bowling and he enjoyed it, the song could have become "Bowling."
This live video was recorded at Warner Amigo Studios in 1980 and featured a live audio cut (different from the one featured in this upload) for use where the band would be lip-syncing on television, to be more realistic than the missing orchestra. This footage has been digitally enhanced to HD quality and features audio from the 2019 remaster of Cross' 1979 debut self-titled album:

LYRICS
Well, it's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
It's not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
Sailing
Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
Soon I will be free
Fantasy
It gets the best of me
When I'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me?
Sailing
Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
[Instrumental Bridge]
Well, it's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Really, believe me
Sailing
Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
ABOUT CHRISTOPHER CROSS
Christopher Cross burst onto the music scene with his 1979 self-titled debut album produced by Michael Omartian. The lead single “Ride Like The Wind” spent 4 weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and was quickly followed up by Cross’ most popular single to date (and first #1 hit) “Sailing”, which later became known as the archetype for the Yacht Rock genre. In 1981, Cross became the first artist in Grammy history to win the “Big Four” most prestigious awards in a single night; Record of the Year (for the single “Sailing”), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also “Sailing”), and Best New Artist. Later that year Cross released “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” which he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer, Peter Allen, and was the title-theme for the 1981 film “Arthur” starring Dudley Moorre and Liza Minnelli. The song earned Cross his second #1 and the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 1981 Academy Awards. Cross’ sophomore album “Another Page” was released in 1983 and featured the singles “Think of Laura” and “All Right”. Cross has sold over 10M albums worldwide and his songs have been covered and sampled by NSYNC, Puff Daddy, Avant, Shirley Bassey, Dione Warwick, and many more.
The beauty of Sailing is that it resonates with so many people, it can be interpreted as simply being in a boat on the water or as complex as the transition we experience through art. I have been very touched by the way people relate to the song. - Christopher Cross

@@zonesquestiloveunderworld It's supposed to be a quote from the future. In 100 years they will claim that this song caused a cultural shift in the industry. Maybe Iit should say,"This content WAS culturally significant." Anyway in the future it can be settled, to quote or not quote.
Simply beautiful. Back when the music was more important than the image.

Couldn’t agree more. The simplicity and beauty of music itself is stripped today for an image portrayed. Music doesn’t need anymore than itself
As a black kid in the 70's, we traveled all over the U.S. every summer the day after the last day of school. My Dad would put on the Christopher Cross album downstairs when he got home from work. We could hear it playing upstairs while we ate dinner. Agreed, smoothest song ever.
Yes I agree and me too it brings me to tears ❤
It captures a place and a time I think we experienced in childhood( innocence, carefree simplicity)....or a place and time we wished we had if we didn't....that we are desperately trying to find again.😔❤
contrarily, for many of us it reminds us of an era where our parents were completely ignoring their children and going off and playing racquetball and partying with friends and doing other stupid Boomer shit... The memories it brings back are only of regret - wishing those people had bothered to be humans and not selfish Boomers for one day in their lives.

@@MusicasEletras5022 Tb acho. Essa música é perfeita
This song takes me back to Rio de Janeiro more than 15 years ago. I was a solo tourist who had followed the Che Guevara Motorcycle Diaries trail across South America, after being inspired by the film of the same name. Brazil wasn't on the trail, but I decided to make it a last stop. I was leaving Ipanema beach at sundown when I jumped into a taxi. On the way from Ipanema to Barra beach, where I was staying, the sun was setting, and it cast a stunning purple-amber haze across the horizon. The ocean had a slight breeze that felt like a warm kiss against my skin, and the coconut trees danced in the wind against the backdrop of that amber-purple sky. At that moment, 'Sailing' came on the radio, and the taxi driver turned it up. I realize now that the song and that ride represented my trip that summer from the Andes of Chile, to Iguazú Falls in Argentina, to the vastness of Lake Titicaca in Boliva, to the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru. For those few moments as the song played and I looked out at the most magnificent sunset setting I had ever seen, it was, and still remains, the most perfect moment of my life.
This is the song that always pops up when I am thinking of my mom. She died from cancer in 2017. I like to think she is sailing away in heaven.
What Christopher did here was produce a piece of art for the ages. It cuts through all strife, all hurt, all pain. Its one of the most redemptive pieces of music ever produced and it affects what it describes: surrender of the self through being immersed in utter beauty. I think that this is Christopher's lived experience. Few can regift such moments for everyone else, but that is what he did through the miracle of his canvass. Thank you Christopher.
Beautifully put..I listen to it all the time

As I always say, music is the closest thing we have to a time machine. Period.
We are currently in the winter of our generation aka the fourth turning where everything dies to make way for next generation. When this song came out it was the summer of our generation when everything looked optimistic. Now you have a corpse as a President to represent the death of the American dream.
I agree.👌
@@discodirk48i disagree with your president comment. Perhaps we are nearing a new civil war and that’s fine with me. Willing to die for my black beliefs and final freedom. I almost want it. The voice, lyrics and the music..timeless..The song deserved the Grammy Awards for Record of the Year 1980
I think this song should win an award every year because it will never go out of date Its the most beautiful music ever made! When Im outside in the summer and warm winds blow this musick describes my feelings Christopher Cross and all the musicians get an everlasting stand of ovation ❤
Oh man I feel at peace when I hear this song. What will people do without great music. Wow soon I will be free I know that for sure I just got to keep having faith in the lord.
my 92 year old grandfather JUST passed and fair winds and following seas.......he LOVED sailing.....and this song will ALWAYS now remind me of him and the DREAMS he wants to me to achieve. god....cherish life and loved ones folks because it can all be over like THAT, sometimes you NEVER see it coming. Then, Carole King might have something to sing for you, lol. But seriously, live every minute of life, because the only thing certain we have is what we have, and it only lasts for so long.
I remember driving to high school listening to this my senior year. I was imagining the freedom and upcoming life journey. I can still remember that freedom. Now at 60 I am feeling it again.
Thank you for sharing
A lot of us in that similar age bracket know exactly what you mean; wonder where the years went, but still feel like a teenager. Live life, that's what it's there for :)
Could not agree more. Same for me. Journey's 1984 song "Only The Young" also gives me the same feeling.
Being young is such a blessing that many overlook at that age. Now we look back with a smile, and wish we could go back, if only for a minute.
I can listen to this song on repeat all day long.
Stephen Stills "Southern Cross" is another good song about being on the water and navigating life. Think he was getting over a divorce when he wrote it.
All caught up in the reverie every word is a symphony ❤
Sailing to me is escaping a harsh reality and disappearing in a meditative state. Thank you for a wonderful song.

I'm feeling blessed! 😇 Thank you for asking! How are you, today?
OMG! I'm a ga girl who loves country music, trucks, fishing and having a cold one sometime! My husband of 32 wonderful years, called me his little country cowgirl! Simple to me is better!

I am 54 years old and had a heart attack 5 days ago. I had an emergency stent placed and I will survive. In my search to find calm and serenity for the years I have left, I was looking for music. I rediscovered this song today after 1st hearing it when I was 9years old. It brings back so much joy and calmness to my heart. It really makes the stress go away. Thank you CC for this gift.
Perfect song to listen to on your road to recovery. Wish you all the best

It's 1993. You grab a shopping cart and start heading to the produce section. Then this banger comes on the speaker system. Grocery shopping just became a transcendental experience. Today is going to be a good day.
God bless Christopher Cross 😊
Such an underrated song, this is my go to song when I struggle with depression. Takes me to a place where anything is possible and I feel free from the difficulties of depression. Just a beautiful song!!
Music is a great way of getting to feel better. Has helped me countless times.
It is NOT "underrated". THATS an insult to Cross & the millions of people who LOVE this song. Sheesh!
I know ur pain well my friend. Depression is a nasty beast im a 48 year old dad of 3 kids and if not for them and one of my friends and this great song I think I might’ve gone nuts already. Doesn't matter how low and deafened I feel this song takes me to a peaceful place deep in the core of my soul to try and heal my hurts! Keep ur chin up and always remember what brings happiness to your heart and don't be shy in seeking those tools out when the road seems all up hill!
❤
I remember my mom getting ready for work in the mornings after doing my hair along with my sisters. The cold snowy mornings in Ohio. This song made for a nice walk to school after a nice hot bowl of cream of wheat!😊 Many blessings to you sir!❤

The poetry of the lyrics of the 80s and 90s is unmatched. Be it rock, rap, r&b, alternative, ballads, country, grunge, across the board.
One of, if not the most phenomenal song ever! That beautiful opening transports me back in time, each and every time...reminding me of more care free and struggle free days. Thank you Mr Cross...thank you!

@@mariadaconceicaosouza5254 totally agree!
All his songs are great! But this one right here, is the favorite song of his for me. It got me through some really tough times as a kid. It still takes me to that peaceful place in my mind when listening to it. I always listen to it when I’m volunteering in National disasters. Inspirational, hopeful, zen, peaceful and makes me smile every time. I hope he knows how his music touches so many lives. I met him back in the day in my hometown NYC. Was always the coolest guy. Always made time for his fans. Was an honor to meet him. Thank YOU for still touching my soul. ✌🏼🦋🌸🌼🌺
