I don't believe for a minute his life was so sad and tragic. He was born with a birth defect but overcame it. He excelled at playing beautiful music and then went on to entertain us with his laughter. We all have ups and downs in this journey of life. Dudley always seemed to soldier on and left behind a beautiful legacy. Thanks Mr. Moore aka "Arthur " for bringing me joy and laughter through a lot of rough times in my life. My husband and I still know every line to your movie Arthur 🎬 🎞. Funniest movie to me, even 40 years later. Rest Easy Dudley....your life was a gift to many 💝💝💝💝💝

In this thing about his death he said he didn’t like the movie Santa Claus well I really liked it I thought you did a really good job at it I guess everybody has their own opinion I’ve never heard about that disease before course I haven’t heard a lot of them I wonder if his children have that disease now anyway thank you for sharing
In my early 20's I was a nurse in a London hospital and lived the same area as Dud in Belsize Park, North London (circa1968). On my way to work at 6am (in my outdoor nurses uniform) I passed him slowly walking up the hill as I was walking down. We smiled and said 'good morning' as we passed. Minutes later I realised who he was, stopped, turned and looked up the hill. There he was at the top of the hill, also stopped, with a broad smile probably wondering how long it would take me to recognise him! He grinned, saluted and we went on our ways. A lovely intimate moment I will never forget.

“I can hear the music all around me” as last words does not sound like a sad ending but rather a joyful one, he was entering a good place.
Just a question...according to the video, when he received his Order in England, he was in a wheelchair & could not speak. How then did he say "I can hear the music all around me" when he died? Perhaps it was the case that his speech was so difficult to understand that he chose not to speak, & that after years of caring for him that his friend could understand him. Either that or she made a false statement. I would like to know which is correct.
The last thing he said gives us all hope.

I don't have any medical or scientific evidence, only allegorical. Neither my grandmother and stepfather were very lucid in their final months. In their final moments, they seemed to get their thoughts together and make some sense. I don't know how or why it happens, but at least for two people in my family, it happened.
Maybe it's God's way of keeping us all guessing and hopeful. Haters destroy love and hope, they always have and always will. It's why it's best to stay strong and stay away from them.

Arthur! Without a doubt the funniest "laughed-until-I-cried" movie I've ever seen.
That was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I was always more mature than my age. Like Dudley, I was bullied and picked on mercilessly, even in my home, by my brother, and I was a musical prodigy (when I finally got a chance, when I my mother went against my father's wishes and she bought me my first guitar at 14 years old), playing music that was extremely advanced classical (Bach, Vivaldi, Paganini, Mozart) and neoclassical progressive rock/metal in only 2 years of playing.
I loved Arthur, and watched dozens of times, and when I was finally allowed to watch 10 I loved that movie also (Dudley Moore's hilarious, spot on, performance, and a 11 year old boy seeing Bo Derek and trying to decide if she, or Barbara Eden as jeanie was more beautiful).
My husband has a gun! I believe you madam and for all I know he shot it while you screamed. Just dozens of zingers in this comedy gem.
" I think I'll take a bath." Butler, "I'll alert the media." It still is a great movie, way better than the remake.

I too have 2 sons. I hardly ever see them. I tried to be a good father to them both. Sometimes it just is what it is and there's not much you can do.
I'm glad he had a friend by his side when he died. Sometimes friends are better than family.
Totally agree with you. My children were ''damaged'' by my Narc Ex and am now estranged from all 3 (adult) kids. Its sad... but as you say, you must accept it is what it is. There is more in life than family and it somehow makes you appreciate the good things that much more!
I had a rough childhood, parents finally divorced when I was about 25. I loved my dad no matter what. I never saw him again after about 28. I miss him so much and was brokenhearted when I read he passed away. There were enough good times I guess, and I respect how my dad survived war and came to USA to become a doctor. I'll always love him and miss him no matter what he may think of me.

I’m closer to my friends now than my own immediate family. It’s funny how life turns out. We were all close growing up but they became judgmental and critical as we grew older. It’s okay. I’m very happy who I have around me ... my friends.

I used to work in Beverly Hills as a parking attendant during my college days back in the late 1980s. I saw many celebrities, athletes, musicians and famous personalities. But, to my utter astonishment, Dudley Moore drew the most attention from the women. My jaw just dropped. He came into the garage with lots of shopping bags and boxes, falling all over himself, just like a scene out of one of his movies. He was oblivious to his surroundings. On that particular day, there were lots of people shopping on Rodeo Drive. All the women in the place stopped, looked at him like they wanted to eat him up. To this day, I have never seen women react this way. I can only assume that in some way, he appeared approachable to them. Other male sex symbols might have come off as too intimidating. Anyways, I will never forget the look on all those women's faces.
Yeah, I bet those women were 'gold diggers', and they saw a juicey taget. 🙄

Dudley's incredible laugh was so infectious. I think he would have been a wonderful person to have known in private life & was so talented on the piano. A great loss to the world. R.I.P "Duds" & thanks for bringing such joy & laughter to so many.
What appears to be the saddest thing is that despite being married 4 times, and having several kids, no one would take care of him except a friend.
Most people are extremely selfish and want to put off the ugly sad real end of life as long as possible

ktothec24 yeah, we really don't know about the family dynamics prior to the actor's illness. yet i do know that offspring don't want to be burdened by ailing parents, especially when the oldies are on low income without any big estate to inherit. Altruism doesn't run strongly in every family.
Exactly! That's what I was thinking. I have a son, and if I needed help later in life that would be the most heart braking things of all, if he didn't try to help.
People old enough to remember will know that his comedy partner, Peter Cook, was a comic genius, and during their time together on the UK show in the 60s Dudley was half of a truly great partnership.
Pete and Dud did much good together, and much bad...but the bad is most remembered by us schoolboys of the 70’s/80’s because they were so damned good as ‘ Derek and Clive’. ‘What’s the worst job you ever had...?’ Exactly. Pure, delicious filth.
"Like Father Like Son" was/is my all time favorite. I always love him as an actor and a human being. R.I.P. Gone but never forgotten.
That was awesome when he took the role of his son and his son was supposed to be him in each others body. The part that got me when he was at the hospital and he was supposed to hit the guy with the Heart problem was getting the paddles put to his chest but he didn't know what to do and they said hit him! He punch the guy 🤪🤛! Still laughing at the thought. A super funny actor in that movie. Would like to see it again just for the laughter it brought back in those days. 😂😂😂🤣🤣♥️
Dudley Moore won an 'organ scholarship' at Magdalen College, Oxford, which is absolutely amazing since the competition for these scholarships is fierce and Dudley won it whilst having to play one of these musical monsters with a club foot! At this level, you need to be able to play the sorts things on the pedal keyboard with your two feet that the average pianist can do with one hand on a piano keyboard, and he needed to wear one of his mother's old shoes backwards on his left foot to do it! I also heard (rightly or wrongly) that he was tipped for a similar appointment at King's College, Cambridge after leaving Oxford. This is the top job of this kind in the UK, and people who get it usually go on to careers as prominent Cathedral musical directors or international conductors, or similar. Dudley apparently chose to go into to jazz and a career on the stage, TV and film instead, but remained a musician all his life. It's a shame that his prodigious musical talent seems to be overlooked. Many years ago his home borough of Barking and Dagenham in London named (I believe) a theatre after him and put on a memorial concert involving local people who knew Dudley in the past. Rena Fruchter was there and played piano in the concert - she was an absolutely charming lady.

It was very heart breaking when I heard about his illness and it's cruel progression back then.
We will never stop remembering his cheeky acting style in film and all the beautiful piano playing too.

Arthur was one of my favorite movies growing up. Even loved the sound track. Such great memories. I always wondered what happened to him. Every ending is sad in some way. At least he followed his dreams, found success and brought laughter and joy to millions.

My wife and I saw him do one of his last TV interviews--I've forgotten with whom and on what show. The interviewer asked him what the future held for him. A thoughtless question if there ever was one. Mr. Moore said, "I think I'm going to die, and I think it's going to be very painful." I couldn't sleep that night. RIP, Mr. Moore. We miss you, and there's no one to take your place.

Why doesn't that surprise me? I'm sixty and TV/Hollywood has absolutely no class today. Even the stars in the 40's and 50's even if they were a little on the wild side, they had some values, knew their patriotic duty and served with distinction and even heroically during the war.
This most recent on 60 Minutes interviewing that porn star was rock bottom, (as in bottom feeders) for the media as far as I'm concerned. There is just no low to which they won't go.
Even the new Roseanne show is still "Hollywood" despite the rave reviews by so-called "conservatives". One of the characters is a, (how old?) cross dresser or implied tranny in training. This is one of the most heartbreaking issues of our times. I've read that thousands of boys across the country are being brainwashed by liberal parents into believing their transexuals, end up getting irreversible surgery and ending up mental cases or worse later on in life. The very worst is the medical profession has actually come out and called that mental illness "normal".
I see what's happened in this country in just the last eight years under Obama and I wonder if the U.S. has gone stark raving crazy.
I loved Dudley Moore. He was so cute and cuddly. Santa Claus the Movie is one of my top favorite films to this day. Arthur was hilarious. Bless you Dudley. The world misses you.

I sat next to him in 1st class on a plane in the late 80's when he was traveling playing the piano. I gave him my paper after I read it and he was so thankful as he had nothing to read. Very nice man.
May be a comic small piano. As he's have to pay for all the seats to get his grand piano on board.
My mother died of pneumonia caused by PSP in August 2001. When we heard of Dudley Moore's diagnosis, we were devastated for him and his loved ones. He will always have a place in my heart, for his work and for the foul disease that took him far too young.

He lives on. I was in the dentist the other day and overheard a young man in his 20's state, after having two cavities filled, that he now knows what Dudley Moore felt like when he left the dentist. (Referring to the dentist scene in the movie '10', a movie that was released at least 20 years to this young man's birth.) Dudley, you did good and continue to touch people's lives in a positive way. Thank you.

I never missed his hilarious 60's TV show with Peter Cook 'Not Only, But Also', and a few years later when I first moved to London for work, I passed him on my way across Soho Square on my way to lunch. I remember he was accompanied by two huge bodyguards and he had a mischievous smirk on his face, as though he was doing it for a lark.
He was a wonderful musician as well, and I remember him accompanying Dionne Warwick, in a musical interlude of the Pete and Dud show. Lovely memories! Thanks Dud 😊😊😊 !

About 1980(?) when I was a student at UCLA, I went to an on-campus screening of a Dudley Moore + Peter Cook movie called "Derek and Clive Get the Horn". By pure chance, I had the best seats in the theater because both Moore + Cook were seated together in the seats right behind me! I got to watch them both on screen with the added benefit of hearing their hilarious private commentary. A memorable experience for sure.

You didn't mention that he was a working class boy from Dagenham, a working class London overspill town. Considering his background, his lack of height and severe disability. His career in music, comedy and films was most extraordinary.

I'll love Dudley Moore 'til the day I die. He had more talent than any other star I can think of, but his incredible gift as a jazz pianist was often overlooked. He's an example of how unfair life can be, having been born with club feet, for which other kids teased him, and having died a horrible death that deprived him of playing the piano, his greatest love. He was, IMO, incredibly ambitious. He wanted it all, and he got it all in Hollywood for 4 or 5 years, although he had been wildly successful as a comedian for many years before going to Hollywood. Most of the credit for the humorous Beyond the Fringe and Pete and Dud sketches went to his partner, Peter Cook, but I always felt that Dudley was just as clever. Plus, his physical comedy was unmatched. He was charming and very loved by everyone who worked with him. His friends did not forget him. They performed a tribute for him not long before his death.
His performance in Arthur is a top 5 comedy performance. A classic.
I had no idea there was an Arthur 2. I remember seeing Arthur as a kid with my mom though. She seemed to really like it. I can't remember it at all. I just remember the Christoper Cross song.

If you want to be surrounded by love (and we all do), you must first give love. There was a time in my life that I can identify with how you feel... then, it came to me to volunteer at the local Boys and Girls Club.
What happened after that was amazing. I was teaching the kids (particularly 5 boys) to just play chess and it ended up in some really good feelings and relationships. Cooking pop corn and hanging out watching movies at the house, etc. I helped all 5 of them get through high school and 4 even went to the local college (2 in technical careers... automotive and construction) and the other two with 2 year degrees.
That was years ago, these days they still think of me as their dad, since only one of them ever had a father that stuck around.
So, get off your ass man... there are kids that really need you and your time... advice... and anything you know!!! They just want to feel like somebody out there gives a shit about them! Does that ring a bell?

In spite of how his later years seemed, his was a life well-lived. The struggles he had were far more than the average person has. He had incredible talent and made a mark in history.
"Santa Claus" was actually my introduction to Dudley and i cannot think of any nicer introduction as Him in the role of the jolly elf Patch. I loved his enthusiasm, warmth, mannerism and just positive attitude. It was a great character that is really hard to imagine being played like that by someone else than Dudley Moore. The film may have bombed back then but the film just had a lot to fight against and the production was also pretty troubled. Today it is never the less a cult film and fan favorite.

I agree. I was going to pass comment about how the narrator said it was a bomb. I was an usher [remember those?] at the movie house where it played and it was packed everyday, every show throughout that Christmas. I thoroughly enjoyed it and watched it several times during my tenure as an usher even staying after my shift to watch it. Not to say anything against Dudley Moore but John Lithgow just tore up the screen as the bad guy. And, of curse, no special effects needed to have Dudley play an elf ;) !

I was dear personal friends of Dudley five years prior to his passing. I believe his brain disease had started. Once he couldn't play the piano anymore, he withdrew even from those who loved him. It was very sad to experience while he was still alive. So sorry.

Dudley Moore was admired by me for many years....way, way back when "Not Only, But Also" was shown down here on (Australian) ABC television.
I bought - and still own - many LPs recorded by the Dudley Moore Trio.
I was at his last public performance in Australia, in Canberra; one of the last, if not the last, of his concert performances.
Many people, and the media, immediately jumped to the erroneous conclusion during his performance that he was under the influence of either alcohol or drugs, or possibly both, because it was during his show that the insidious effects of SNP manifested themselves.
His performance was abbreviated, many people went home annoyed (including myself) at having spent a considerable sum on tickets and then being entertained by a drunk.
Dudley returned to the UK....I can't recall if further performances were cancelled here or whether Canberra was the last in the tour.....and it was shortly after that he was diagnosed with SNP.
I was stunned at hearing the news and felt very bad about my reaction on the night of his concert.
His music is still with me - I love his unique style of jazz. And his infectious grin always lifts my spirits when I see him in a movie or YT clip of a "Pete 'n' Dud" moment.
What a wonderful talent he was.
I felt sad when you said, Dudley Moore came to a sad ending. It was just an ending. He gave us so much love and laughter. He was a bright light and kept going through adversity as we all must.
It was probably thought of as sad because he died due to an illness not just old age.
It wasn't "just an ending." It was a cruel ending as he suffered from a disease for 5 or 6 years that robbed him of what he loved most -- playing the piano.
"Bedazzled" (1967) is my favorite comedy of all time. He has achieved immortality as far as I'm concerned. I wish I could have thanked him for that one (and Peter Cook). They always seem alive to me - frozen in time and laughter in that film. He did some good music for that film as well. Lets face it - he had a more interesting and successful life than 99.9 % of us. No tragedy here. We never know how our last years will be. Any of us.
Agreed! One of my favourite films. So brilliantly written, and well performed. And so much better than the remake. Who else but Cook & Moore say such things as “Frobisher & Gleason Raspberry Ice Lolly” or “Frooney Green Eye Wash” and make it sound hilarious!
Dudley Moore's ending was particularly cruel as it deprived him of the things he most valued in his life. He was indeed a child prodigy & played the organ & piano to concert hall standard. He also had a quite brilliant mind & achieved a scholarship at Oxford University despite his humble working class background.

PSP took my grandfather. Robbed him of abilities to pilot small planes and woodworking, among others. Not nearly enough is known about this awful neurological affliction. RIP, Cuddly Dudley. ❤

When I was a child I loved the movie Milo and Otis. Dudley did the voices. It's still a family favorite 😍
So weird that he's buried in New Jersey. All those high end marriages and in the end it was an ordinary American couple who took care of him in his last days.

It's sad that he could barely speak, but before his death was able to say what he wanted to say. They say that despite his progressive Alzheimer's, Pres. Reagan was able to say his last words to Nancy. How does this happen?
His gravestone is so sad - it doesn't even have 'dad' on there - where were his sons? Couldn't they be bothered to pay for the engraving etc?

I agree with So many of these comments. I Loved Dudley Moore for all the pleasure his movies brought and the laughter he gave me. I wrote him once to thank him and asked for his autogragh... he sent me a signed 8x10 with a long message above his signature. which i treasure... i wonder if any of his sons have his talen. He was a wonderful Pianist and such a natural as a comedian. Arthur 2 was still a Good movie even if it didn't match up to Arthur.... sequels never do ... but thanks again fot the laughter and entertainment Dudley. R.I.P. God Bless you.

Yes - I had - until now - thought he died from complications of alcoholism, as reported by the press. I don't know which is sadder... That he was falsley reported to be an alcoholic, or that he had such a devastating disease that took his life. He is missed. 💕
My mom had the same disease. I cared for her to the end. She eventually didn't want to live anymore.
My Mom died of supra nuclear palsy too! At the same age as Dudley.

Were any of you're mom's taking a Statin drug before this happened? I'm not saying it's a cause, but it has been known to lower the cholesterol in the brain that is used to protect against diseases.
I'm a nurse...yes, Statins can do this...interesting to see Alzheimer's increasing, too
Here's the frustrating part. I was just inquiring on the Cure PSP forum a few years back that the Statins my mom had been taken may have someway contributed to her getting the disease. I wasn't implying that it directly caused it, but that it could have affected something that lead to the diesease. The hostility I got from that was overwhelming to the pount that I was being treated like I was trolling the forum.

Dudley Moore was one of my favorite actors. I am shocked to see he has passed away. Hopefully he is in a better place. I especially love the song, when you get caught between the moon and New York City. The best thing you can do is fall in love. He will be missed.

We watched Arthur again after many years just a few months ago, and we were quite simply blown away by his talent. This was a sad little video but I was heartened by his last words- "I can hear the music all around me." Heaven must be filled with music and laughter. Thank you so much for making this.
