I'd argue that the Black album doesn't exactly count as heavy metal. More like they branched out until Death Magnetic was a return to the heavy roots :)
Id say that the black album was a heavy metal album, personally the only albums you can't argue as being metal really are load and reload granted they have metal moments but they are mostly rock
Metal has more in common composition wise with Classical post baroque music than it does with rock or any other type of music, Mozart but more so Bethoven were the metalheads of the 18th and 19th century
