I appreciate you stating "The combat is just flat out better in the old games," without having to state "in my opinion" or whatever. It's still shocking to me how people underrate those original games when the combat in the new GOW is so much mashier than the originals. And that point about how combat encounters open is so f*ing important. Because of the way runic cooldowns are set up, every fight's opening strategy is just activate runic attacks and atreus power and shock arrows, and half the fight is already over. Just kill the stragglers. It suuuuucks. Love the point on active versus passive combat design. GOW 2018's rpg mechanics take a series that rewarded you for playing better, and turned it into a game where you don't actually need to play better you just need better gear and you can keep playing badly.

TOTALLY agree. God Of War 2018 was a huge steaming pile of donkey shit..... with very pretty graphics. Sony needs to realise we want GAMES not endless cutscenes with simplistic, dumbed down gameplay every so often. Sony has not released a decent games in years now, yet because their games are very polished, people lap them up. I'll stick with the PROPER God Of War games and avoid Sony first party releases until they release games that are NOT movies. :(

I feel like the success of the masterpiece the Witcher 3 has hurt the overall games industry. More studios are trying to make something like it than innovate and do something new and better which is stifling the industry as a whole. Ubigreed is especially guilty of this.

Sigrun is a good boss and final conclusion to the Valkary in Normal. The problem is is give me God of War Mode which takes away some your counter interactions (like throwing the Leviathan Axe to disrupt many of her aireal shenanigans) in a game that is all about Defensive Counter play instead of Aggressive Active Play.

The disappointing part of this is that you must connect with the father and son relationship narrative to be able to enjoy the game fully, as every other aspect hinges on it that central theme. I didn't really care for Atreus. I found his appearance and general personality just bland and Kratos was very reserved the whole game even at crucial moments.
I found him annoying and I didn’t care much for him, which really hurt my playthrough because by the halfway point I didn’t care for the gameplay and then I didn’t care about the story in a story based game
The thing I hate even about that story, among Atreus being annoying, and obnoxious, I just hate how unoriginal this dumb story is because its been just another trend a dev team thought they needed to cash in on. It doesn't feel like you're playing God of War until the final boss.
It feels like God of War 2018 is ashamed to be a video game. I'm 10 hours in and bored. I just want to finish the main story and never play it again. It's not even a great story.
It's a game ashamed to be a game made for men ashamed of being men. Kratos looks like a buffed up soyjak with the NuMale beard. Every masculine aspect of him has been removed due to being "toxic." He's not allowed to feel anything except sadness anymore. He's not allowed to take action for himself. He's not allowed to have sex (not that I mind a character who is married and remains faithful to his wife, but you know that's not the reason they removed it.)
Games being "cinematic" Is such an insulting and derogatory statement regarding what gaming should be. It's akin to say imitating hollywood make a story deep and serious for some screwed up reason. Yes i Unironically would call the new GOW as the god of us 4: neil duckman edition. Sure it's alright, but it's presented in a cliche way, it feels cliche to play and has a shoved in RPG system ( a major red flag in any action game). Idiots can call it a DMC clone all they wantwant, but that foundation was always better than what current day dogwater AAA action actually is.
About the story, one of my biggest criticisms is Baldur who is both a terrible antagonist AND as a reflection of past Kratos. Throughout the game the writers try really hard to make Kratos relate to Baldur such as the final fight but it is laughable as Kratos in the past games had definable character traits such as being ambitious, patriotic of Sparta, respectful of women and children and loyal and caring towards his allies (Orkus) and family (Deimos). Then after the tragedy of his family Kratos settled in his worst tendencies of being alcoholic and sleeping with women in order to forget his nightmares while doing everything to seek REDEMPTION not Revenge. Baldur on the other hand gets barely any characterisation beyond being a manchild who was both hedonistic and spiteful, which by the way is ONLY what the writers present of his backstory that is meant to make him come off as sympathetic but is utterly laughable. Seriously there is more time taken to characterise Thor and Odin a.k.a the two barely present in the game. There is less attention given to Baldur the games main antagonist who largely becomes forgettable and no longer intimidating as Kratos has put him in his place through every encounter. Also Baldur unlike Kratos comes off AS a one dimensional brute who's only character trait is his tragedy of "not feeling pain" as beyond that there is nothing more to him, he also commits stupid mistakes constantly and only succeds when the plot bends backwards to make Kratos and Atrues completely stupid like that section on top of the midgard mountain. It's soo funny and ironic that people see Kratos in Baldur who comes off as the parody of the character that people THINK Kratos was in the previous games.
And then you realize that Thor was the reflection of kratos (not a good one, but still) and baldur was just a way to tell that kratos has a chance to stop someone from following his path.

My biggest issue with the game, is the level system not being tied to gameplay, but armor level. In a game like sekiro, bloodborne, dmc5, or the original gow games, your skill at playing the game IS the difficulty level...in 2018, it doesn't matter how good you are, a lvl 5 base dragur, vs you at armor lvl 1, you're getting one shot. Period. I also think the enemies themselves were the difficulty level in the og gow games. Saytrs, Medusas, cerberus'....aren't on the same level as a base legionare.
It's crazy Kratos the god of war needs Armor and leveling up to protect himself and survive, even the god armor in God of war 2 was to represent that he is a God now and it's immediately got broken after the first boss in the beginning of the game, this new game is just big joke excuse

@Omega the issue is that they skipped writing a potentially interesting Redemption story but instead simply skipped that journey so that Kratos in the game is just a boring stoic side kick who follows the whims of Atreus.
The old God Of War games are effing epic and phenomenal , From music , To the brutal fast gameplay , Amazing Greek settings , Great stories of fallen characters and a wronged spartan warrior who is robbed of his humanity , To his redemption , I love the addicting fun fast paced gameplay , And to see how the series transformed from a badass brutal franchise to a series for fragile people and last of us junkies in 2018 pains me so much , Been with the franchise since the 2005 and I loved all of the amazing classic GOW games , RIP GOW , It was an amazing run ,,, 🤦♂️😔

I will never buy this "Kratos viking" crap to begin with. I mean, how is it possible to change the core aspect of a game so much and still keep the same name? The franchise ended after the third, and there's nothing wrong with that, because it was perfect the way it was.

God of war 4 is really hard to like because it feels desperate. It's desperate to prove it "grew up" so it has a sad kratos who's a passive protagonist in his own story It's desperate to be taken seriously so it has the last of us camera and walking sections It's desperate to feel modern to it integrates wonky elements of RPG and open world It's desperate to appeal to their own grown up audience so kratos is a dad now.
I enjoy the game for the most part, especially the lore but I will say that I'm a big fan of action games and it sucks that they over-prioritized story rather than gameplay. The camera becomes an issue very quickly when you're playing on harder difficulty and surrounded by enemies. I constantly find myself frantically running so that I can view all enemies at once. It's even more annoying having to fight a teleporting enemy with the restricted camera. On my first playthrough, I was never incentivized to play well until I saw GBG's combos. Therefore, it would be cool if they expand the combo options in the next game and add a combo meter. It's way more satisfying pulling off cool combos rather than effortlessly throwing your axe at enemies and spamming Atreus's arrows.
Such an underrated video couldn't agree more what gets me honestly is how even people like maximilian dood whos played god of war 3 and praises the dmc games for their gameplay said god of war 2018 was flawless and above a 10/10 at the end of his playthrough cx

I have a long way to go in this video, but I wanted to pause because it's already remarkable that the reviewer and I have similar thoughts. I recently got GoW (2018) and have about 20 hours, so far. This is the first GoW game I've played (I've played character action games inspired by it, so I have an idea of how the original games felt), but I've noticed the same thing as the reviewer who is a long-time fan and had just played half a dozen games in the series. At some point in my playthrough, I came to believe that the game known as GoW (2018) should have been its own new franchise instead of redefining the God of War series. The overbearing & deconstructionist narrative and slow, methodical combat are totally alien to 2000s-era character action games. Complete speculation since I know nothing about the development of this game, but I suspect this game was made to intentionally deconstruct a violent, masculine & "badass" character... and also the people who enjoy that kind of entertainment. Like the Disney live action remakes of classic cartoons, God of War was meant to fix the "errors" of the original and be a "superior" replacement. As the vintage footage of the original developers shows, GoW was made by young men. The new games were made by a diverse team of various cultures, religious views and gender identities. (To paraphrase Ubisoft's standard disclaimer.) Games like the original GoW will no longer be made by modern Western AAA studios.
On the combat review section and wondering why people seem to be under the impression that it's deeper than old GoW, as someone who gets really into JRPG combat mechanics I have a bit of a theory. Basically, I often get the feeling that people judge how complex a combat system is based on the aesthetic elements (for lack of a better term) than how the actual core mechanics work together. To put it another way, people see GoW 2018's combat as more complex because it has multiple cooldown timers, enemies have break bars, gaining new moves is done through a skill tree like UI rather than getting a chunk of moves when upgrading the weapon directly, slower is synonymous with more strategic for a lot of people, etc. A lot of things that create the appearance of more depth when it's really stuff that's basically the same but presented differently (like break bars and the skill tree) or something that doesn't add all that much depth, but results in more stuff on screen (like cooldowns).
1.09:49 i TOTALLY AGREE, it ruined GOW 3 ending. The fan theory of Kratos being dragged to a different universe which was the NORSE universe would have salvaged the story but they decided to take a really silly route of explaining that Greece was just a part of the world.
I think the video game industry has a pretty big misconception about what a video game story should be. And a game like this is a reflection of that. Video game stories are not dumb and one dimensional because the developers couldn´t do better and players would have not cared anyway. Video game stories are self-aware, regardless if they are dumb and one dimensional or not, which gives them the luxury of doing whatever they want without feeling embarrassed. PS2 God of War was self-aware. Devil May Cry 5 is self-aware. Dad of Boy isn't. The fact that they want to advertize this as a mature, complex, intelligent and emotional work of high art that will make you cry and makes every other game you´ve experience feel like garbage when at the end of the day what Sony cares about is to make sure each game they put out sells a billion copies by making them check every box in a list of market trends feels extremely pretentious and patronizing by comparison.
I find it really disingenuous that people throw the title "Masterpiece" all over the place that it simply means "game that is decent and I like." Like this game, which wants to be taken seriously of being art, while still being made as a PRODUCT first to get all the money possible. Let's face it if the Last Of Us was not as successful, then GOW2018 would be very DIFFERENT.
The biggest problem I had with this game was trying to make Kratos human again instead of keeping him dead and his journey be stories and legends for the Vikings that appeared on the Earth or use a Frost giant who has heard of Kratos and his violent tendencies against the gods of Greece. You know make a new IP and not make God of War something it's not.
the only good thing I found in this game...is that it made realise how much I had underastimated the old GOW games. I expect ragnarok to double down on anything this game did wrong and poorly. It's sad how so many people believed this game's insulting markting too.

I finished the game on Give Me God Of War, including all the valkyries (which I mention/show in the video). You can't beat Sigrun on GMGOW without understanding the game's mechanics. You're getting mad without even watching my entire argument.
@@UnderTheBun Sorry for being a dick, yes. But I actually watched it further and I shouldn't have to. This is just Under the Mayo copypasta, and his points are so bad. I never played a single TLoU game, I beat all the GoW games on the hardest mode so I know what I am talking about. The new game's combat is more deep. Many people just don't understand it, they don't understand why the camera was made this way, they don't grasp the runic attacks and their cooldown. The only issue is balance while using certain items like the talisman that recharges all the runics. And I'm not telling that the combat in the older games is bad or button mashy, it's just that the new one is an evolution of what was before. So calling it a misdirection bothers me.
I don't get why Atreus wasn't trained as a spartan with a spear and shield. He can still have the bow because I am sure that they trained with a bow. But it was a missed opportunity for Kratos to show his greek culture and how it clashes with the norse culture. And no, I don't mean that Kratos trains Atreus as brutally and ruthlessly as he was trained because that is his son. There are other lessons and techniques from the Spartans to be learned.
This was the most thorough, spot-on review I've seen for a game. I'm a huge fan of the series and also had the same issues with 2018 that you stated. My main complaints with GOW 2018 were: 1. Combat: The axe combat just doesn't feel anywhere near as fun and fluid as the blades or even sub weapons in past games. And I'm simply not a fan of the many RPG elements introduced in 2018. 2. Story: I miss the epic storytelling of the previous games. I had the same issues with the slow opening. For Ragnarok give the fans the classic GOW opening act that starts with a bang. I also found Atreus annoying and didn't feel sympathetic for him at any point in the game. The overall story just lacked the punch and grandiosity of the older games that I found so much more entertaining. It's clear the impact that TLOU had on this game. Let Naughty Dog carry that torch but I want to see SMS return to what they do best. 3. Camera: either bring back the fixed camera or something more along the lines of DMC5. I did not like the TLOU-style camera. I still think 2018 was a good game, but in my opinion it was the weakest in the series. It's hard for me to rank the franchise but my favorites are: GOW1: story and favorite overall GOW2: world GOW3: gameplay and bosses Looking forward to Ragnarok fixing some of the gripes with 2018 shared by many of us longtime fans of the series.
The one thing i despise about this game and its sequel is any climbing section, they are actual snooze fests. I know its important for a first time playthrough, as thats where dome of the story is displayed. But on replays of the game, maybe do what ragnarok did and just teplave the climbing sections with much faster traversal
Haven't watched the video yet but god I hate the combat in this game 🤦🏾♂️. The camera is way too close, enemies with near INSTANTANEOUS attack speed will eat your health bar on GMGOW difficulty because you couldn't fucking see them. And then I-frames are terrible too, enemies will just tank your special attack and start wailing on you, but since you're locked in some long ass animation with no way to clip/cancel AND have no invincibility frames... you're fucked.
@@123VRa empty all your runic attacks, use talisman of unbound potential, empty all runic attacks again, congrats you've cleared every standard encounter in the game. "tactical". there are some good bosses, first baldur is really cool, same for magni and modi and sigrun, but the combat is not tactical most of the time.

Fantastic content, really passionate towards old God of War and that brutal power fantasy. Unfortunately all of that is gone and they butchered it hard. Kratos just became a weak man now, in Ragnarok they emasculated him even further and butchered Nordic mythos hardcore. The franchise is just dead. God of War III remains the absolute peak forever and as time goes as well because it's a timeless game. Also you mentioned DMC 5 that's how a game should provide fans what they deserve and what their characters need not this mess.
My feelings towards GOW 2018 is that it feels like it is ashamed of the prior games and the fact it is a videogame. The originals felt distinct, the combos were better offering rewards for players that played well. If they were going to make another GOW game they should have iterated on what was already there.

For why Baldur is only hunting Kratos and Atreus _now._ Technically he's hunting Fae, the wife/mother who was interfering with Odins' plans. Until now, she had a barrier placed around their home which prevented anyone from finding them-but with a caveat. The barrier was built on the trees she marked. The trees she requested Kratos to cut down and make her Pyre with. Knowing that this would inevitably reveal him and Atreus to the Norse Pantheon and force them into moving.
Coming from someone who played all the games but over a long period of time I remember loving this game when I first played it from the hype and the hack and slash aspects it was cool but when I thought about the game compared to all the others I felt cheated and then I thought about the downfall of videos games as a whole it’s depressing really
you just grew up like everyone else. What gave you the most joy in old games back when we were teens, is hard to replicate in our old age(30+ :p). Maybe I'm just assuming your age or gaming history, but I find people I talk to IRL who dislike the game, to be in the older demographic
@@padzman91 Actually, the old games are more fun. It's not about things getting less enjoyable with age. There's a world of difference between playing a good game and these boring movie games. There still are a lot of people who primarily play old games and enjoy them a lot. Too many new games are only hype.
Lastly, my biggest gripe with the game is its combat. It feels like a chip away shooter too often. Enemies being able to interup even the most basic aaab combo is such a flow kill and makes it impossible to feel bad ass.
Looking at this from afar, one aspect I don't like is enemies that can one hit kill you or do serious damage without the right gear. That is forcing you to play and look a certian way! I wasn't feeling that. I want to get into god of war(the series) but I am probably not gonna play this.

Finally, I got to play GOW at an amazing quality and framerate on PC (The game is really well optimized) and I'm a bit disappointed to be honest. Point to consider 1. I'm not fanboying for any company, except maybe Obsidian and old Bioware. 2 I'm used to playing on difficult and I like a well-balanced challenge. 3. I got the game for around $16 on Steam. Here's what I didn't like: 1. I can't stop rolling my eyes every time Atreus speaks. The kid's annoying af... 2. I can't believe they decided to go with an American accent. Everything sounds out of place. The expression they use don't match the theme of the game at all. 3. I hated how the game takes you for an idiot. The menu tutorials gave me the impression that it was meant for slow people. 4. Commentary during combat, gets annoying, again this is Atreus. The issue could have been solved by ditching the over the shoulder camera during combat, similar to other games. You can't never know what's happening behind you without the boy yelling at you or the attack detection arrows. 5. On the hard difficulty enemies are sponges, that's it. 6. last but not least... Kratos is beta now... He's disrespected by everyone. The nail on the coffin was when he was sent to cut flowers... This is not the Kratos I remember during the PSP era. Don't get me wrong, the game is really well done, art direction is ok and combat is great, but the direction they took screams "below average casual"
Really nice review overall. However i do have to say one thing. Gow 2018 is NOT an open world. Yes you have more freedom to explore than the previews games, there are more open section and branching paths, but overall is still a linear game. The game greatly limits and controls when and how you can explore certain areas. At best, i could say it's a semi-open world-ish game, but it's nowhere at the same level as Red Dead 2, Skyrim, Botw, Fallout, Gta etc.
Calling Not of war a masterpiece is like loving beef jerky when you’ve never tried steak. I fucking love steak. I’m stuck at 20:25 and I hate this bland boring game. Kratos murdered the entire Greek pantheon and now I have to worry about armor stats. 🤦♂️
Maybe it's because I played Demons Soul's just before, but to me, I see God of War 2018 as taking Souls games influence in their gameplay, where-as the old God of War had DMC influence. Then it just depends which type of gameplay you prefer, but it makes sense that 2018 is based on Souls since that's what's hot and cool right now, where-as before it was DMC and Bayonetta that was all the rage.
I did play it, besides the Ragnarok series what i do enjoyed a lot further than the 2018 game, indeed i would like to add the valhala dlc helped a lot to take more seriously and enjoy the game. The blade of olympus, the greek enemies, the different rages, the shields, everything was a bit better than the last title but, im still feeling slowly when specially in the moments what I can't do real platforming only press O and wait until the animation its finished. The old games specially the one were the best in platforming and combat system by far, maybe it wasnt as analitic as the ragnarok its, but being able of do that amount of movements, different kinda weapons, the bow of apollo everything was better in that way. I miss having some more freedom of movement, and not lost the view on the screen of the enemies, i miss double jump and the aerial combat, the water sections in the temple of pandora, for me the game downgraded a lot, for a such "deep story"

32:08, this is IMO disingenuous. GOW can be as SIMPLE or COMPLEX AS YOU WANT. You can breeze through GOW 1-3 just using Square spam, or you can do all the other extra stuff and have fun with your combos. GOW4 is much the same, albeit slower. It can be as SIMPLE or COMPLEX as you want. Edit: watched a bit more, and I agree that Runic Attacks are a problem to gameplay. Combat starts as (Runic > Unbound Potential > Runics > Attacks > Repeat). Maybe in Ragnarok, remove it entirely. IMO, if they make a combo meter and once you reach a threshold, THEN you can use Runics. ALSO, remove Unbound Potential. I didn't even use it in GMGOW, I much enjoyed the TimeStop Dodge one, as it incentivizes me to dodge perfectly. Edit2: Not sure, but the fast travel time is probably because game takes that long to "load" the map. they tried to alleviate the boredom somewhat via Mimir's stories. But once again, if you don't enjoy the Story or enthralled to hear the worldbuilding aspect, this WILL be boring to people
Then you never played the previous games clearly, as anyone who played the games will tell you that the square square triangle and square spam combo is a very ineffective damaging combo even on normal and the harder difficulties. The combo does not work on every enemy, and it is a death sentence to use on specific encounters that require different approaches and it doesn't guarantee you a lot of health to be left with or exp to be earned in combat. The combos are more used as a punt that allows you OPTIONS for follow-ups for big damage, increase in hit counter, and keeping enemy airborne.

Also Atreus being Loki doesnt explain the whiplash we get in his character development. It was poorly done. Loki also isnt "half good half evil", he's a trickster who ultimately causes Ragnarok. I've read books about Norse mythology, I have a general understanding of Loki. Atreus is just an annoying kid. A Loki move would be revealing himself in the next game as Loki, not Atreus, and betraying Kratos. Basically the whole time he was a kid was an act, so that Kratos would get close to him and Loki could trick him for maximum harm. All of that time Kratos cared for Atreus would be a lie fabricated by Loki to fuck with him.

Just a minor nitpick with your calling GoW 2018 GOW4. There are other games that could claim the GOW4 title. In my opinion it should be GoW: Ascension. I could also claim Ghost of Sparta, but I’ll go with Ascension because of console release.

if you do new game + and god of war mode despite the armor you have you can get one to two shot BY THE FIRST ENEMY and you don't even insta kill them with the buffs
Sad to say that Dante's Inferno is my favorite God of War game and I'm not sure why, maybe nostalgia even though I played all of the games at launch. It's probably just the catholic backdrop, God Of War 2 is goat though.

I appreciate you stating "The combat is just flat out better in the old games," without having to state "in my opinion" or whatever. It's still shocking to me how people underrate those original games when the combat in the new GOW is so much mashier than the originals.
And that point about how combat encounters open is so f*ing important. Because of the way runic cooldowns are set up, every fight's opening strategy is just activate runic attacks and atreus power and shock arrows, and half the fight is already over. Just kill the stragglers. It suuuuucks.
Love the point on active versus passive combat design. GOW 2018's rpg mechanics take a series that rewarded you for playing better, and turned it into a game where you don't actually need to play better you just need better gear and you can keep playing badly.

The disappointing part of this is that you must connect with the father and son relationship narrative to be able to enjoy the game fully, as every other aspect hinges on it that central theme. I didn't really care for Atreus. I found his appearance and general personality just bland and Kratos was very reserved the whole game even at crucial moments.
I found him annoying and I didn’t care much for him, which really hurt my playthrough because by the halfway point I didn’t care for the gameplay and then I didn’t care about the story in a story based game
The thing I hate even about that story, among Atreus being annoying, and obnoxious, I just hate how unoriginal this dumb story is because its been just another trend a dev team thought they needed to cash in on. It doesn't feel like you're playing God of War until the final boss.

It's a game ashamed to be a game made for men ashamed of being men. Kratos looks like a buffed up soyjak with the NuMale beard. Every masculine aspect of him has been removed due to being "toxic." He's not allowed to feel anything except sadness anymore. He's not allowed to take action for himself. He's not allowed to have sex (not that I mind a character who is married and remains faithful to his wife, but you know that's not the reason they removed it.)

Yes i Unironically would call the new GOW as the god of us 4: neil duckman edition. Sure it's alright, but it's presented in a cliche way, it feels cliche to play and has a shoved in RPG system ( a major red flag in any action game). Idiots can call it a DMC clone all they wantwant, but that foundation was always better than what current day dogwater AAA action actually is.
Its like calling a movie "book-like" as a point of praise because it consists mostly of text scrolling across the screen (with horrific prose writing)

About the story, one of my biggest criticisms is Baldur who is both a terrible antagonist AND as a reflection of past Kratos. Throughout the game the writers try really hard to make Kratos relate to Baldur such as the final fight but it is laughable as Kratos in the past games had definable character traits such as being ambitious, patriotic of Sparta, respectful of women and children and loyal and caring towards his allies (Orkus) and family (Deimos). Then after the tragedy of his family Kratos settled in his worst tendencies of being alcoholic and sleeping with women in order to forget his nightmares while doing everything to seek REDEMPTION not Revenge. Baldur on the other hand gets barely any characterisation beyond being a manchild who was both hedonistic and spiteful, which by the way is ONLY what the writers present of his backstory that is meant to make him come off as sympathetic but is utterly laughable. Seriously there is more time taken to characterise Thor and Odin a.k.a the two barely present in the game. There is less attention given to Baldur the games main antagonist who largely becomes forgettable and no longer intimidating as Kratos has put him in his place through every encounter. Also Baldur unlike Kratos comes off AS a one dimensional brute who's only character trait is his tragedy of "not feeling pain" as beyond that there is nothing more to him, he also commits stupid mistakes constantly and only succeds when the plot bends backwards to make Kratos and Atrues completely stupid like that section on top of the midgard mountain. It's soo funny and ironic that people see Kratos in Baldur who comes off as the parody of the character that people THINK Kratos was in the previous games.
And then you realize that Thor was the reflection of kratos (not a good one, but still) and baldur was just a way to tell that kratos has a chance to stop someone from following his path.

My biggest issue with the game, is the level system not being tied to gameplay, but armor level.
In a game like sekiro, bloodborne, dmc5, or the original gow games, your skill at playing the game IS the difficulty level...in 2018, it doesn't matter how good you are, a lvl 5 base dragur, vs you at armor lvl 1, you're getting one shot. Period.
I also think the enemies themselves were the difficulty level in the og gow games. Saytrs, Medusas, cerberus'....aren't on the same level as a base legionare.
It's crazy Kratos the god of war needs Armor and leveling up to protect himself and survive, even the god armor in God of war 2 was to represent that he is a God now and it's immediately got broken after the first boss in the beginning of the game, this new game is just big joke excuse

I enjoy the game for the most part, especially the lore but I will say that I'm a big fan of action games and it sucks that they over-prioritized story rather than gameplay. The camera becomes an issue very quickly when you're playing on harder difficulty and surrounded by enemies. I constantly find myself frantically running so that I can view all enemies at once. It's even more annoying having to fight a teleporting enemy with the restricted camera.
On my first playthrough, I was never incentivized to play well until I saw GBG's combos. Therefore, it would be cool if they expand the combo options in the next game and add a combo meter. It's way more satisfying pulling off cool combos rather than effortlessly throwing your axe at enemies and spamming Atreus's arrows.

I have a long way to go in this video, but I wanted to pause because it's already remarkable that the reviewer and I have similar thoughts. I recently got GoW (2018) and have about 20 hours, so far. This is the first GoW game I've played (I've played character action games inspired by it, so I have an idea of how the original games felt), but I've noticed the same thing as the reviewer who is a long-time fan and had just played half a dozen games in the series.
At some point in my playthrough, I came to believe that the game known as GoW (2018) should have been its own new franchise instead of redefining the God of War series. The overbearing & deconstructionist narrative and slow, methodical combat are totally alien to 2000s-era character action games.
Complete speculation since I know nothing about the development of this game, but I suspect this game was made to intentionally deconstruct a violent, masculine & "badass" character... and also the people who enjoy that kind of entertainment. Like the Disney live action remakes of classic cartoons, God of War was meant to fix the "errors" of the original and be a "superior" replacement.
As the vintage footage of the original developers shows, GoW was made by young men. The new games were made by a diverse team of various cultures, religious views and gender identities. (To paraphrase Ubisoft's standard disclaimer.) Games like the original GoW will no longer be made by modern Western AAA studios.
On the combat review section and wondering why people seem to be under the impression that it's deeper than old GoW, as someone who gets really into JRPG combat mechanics I have a bit of a theory. Basically, I often get the feeling that people judge how complex a combat system is based on the aesthetic elements (for lack of a better term) than how the actual core mechanics work together. To put it another way, people see GoW 2018's combat as more complex because it has multiple cooldown timers, enemies have break bars, gaining new moves is done through a skill tree like UI rather than getting a chunk of moves when upgrading the weapon directly, slower is synonymous with more strategic for a lot of people, etc. A lot of things that create the appearance of more depth when it's really stuff that's basically the same but presented differently (like break bars and the skill tree) or something that doesn't add all that much depth, but results in more stuff on screen (like cooldowns).

1.09:49 i TOTALLY AGREE, it ruined GOW 3 ending. The fan theory of Kratos being dragged to a different universe which was the NORSE universe would have salvaged the story but they decided to take a really silly route of explaining that Greece was just a part of the world.
I think the video game industry has a pretty big misconception about what a video game story should be.
And a game like this is a reflection of that.
Video game stories are not dumb and one dimensional because the developers couldn´t do better and players would have not cared anyway.

The fact that they want to advertize this as a mature, complex, intelligent and emotional work of high art that will make you cry and makes every other game you´ve experience feel like garbage when at the end of the day what Sony cares about is to make sure each game they put out sells a billion copies by making them check every box in a list of market trends feels extremely pretentious and patronizing by comparison.
I find it really disingenuous that people throw the title "Masterpiece" all over the place that it simply means "game that is decent and I like."
Like this game, which wants to be taken seriously of being art, while still being made as a PRODUCT first to get all the money possible. Let's face it if the Last Of Us was not as successful, then GOW2018 would be very DIFFERENT.
The biggest problem I had with this game was trying to make Kratos human again instead of keeping him dead and his journey be stories and legends for the Vikings that appeared on the Earth or use a Frost giant who has heard of Kratos and his violent tendencies against the gods of Greece. You know make a new IP and not make God of War something it's not.
the only good thing I found in this game...is that it made realise how much I had underastimated the old GOW games. I expect ragnarok to double down on anything this game did wrong and poorly. It's sad how so many people believed this game's insulting markting too.

You're literally just on a "first impressions" section. At least watch the breakdown of combat. I finished the game on Give Me God Of War, including all the valkyries (which I mention/show in the video). You can't beat Sigrun on GMGOW without understanding the game's mechanics.

I never played a single TLoU game, I beat all the GoW games on the hardest mode so I know what I am talking about. The new game's combat is more deep. Many people just don't understand it, they don't understand why the camera was made this way, they don't grasp the runic attacks and their cooldown. The only issue is balance while using certain items like the talisman that recharges all the runics. And I'm not telling that the combat in the older games is bad or button mashy, it's just that the new one is an evolution of what was before. So calling it a misdirection bothers me.

I don't get why Atreus wasn't trained as a spartan with a spear and shield. He can still have the bow because I am sure that they trained with a bow. But it was a missed opportunity for Kratos to show his greek culture and how it clashes with the norse culture. And no, I don't mean that Kratos trains Atreus as brutally and ruthlessly as he was trained because that is his son. There are other lessons and techniques from the Spartans to be learned.
This was the most thorough, spot-on review I've seen for a game. I'm a huge fan of the series and also had the same issues with 2018 that you stated. My main complaints with GOW 2018 were:
1. Combat: The axe combat just doesn't feel anywhere near as fun and fluid as the blades or even sub weapons in past games. And I'm simply not a fan of the many RPG elements introduced in 2018.
2. Story: I miss the epic storytelling of the previous games. I had the same issues with the slow opening. For Ragnarok give the fans the classic GOW opening act that starts with a bang. I also found Atreus annoying and didn't feel sympathetic for him at any point in the game. The overall story just lacked the punch and grandiosity of the older games that I found so much more entertaining. It's clear the impact that TLOU had on this game. Let Naughty Dog carry that torch but I want to see SMS return to what they do best.
3. Camera: either bring back the fixed camera or something more along the lines of DMC5. I did not like the TLOU-style camera.
I still think 2018 was a good game, but in my opinion it was the weakest in the series. It's hard for me to rank the franchise but my favorites are:
GOW1: story and favorite overall
GOW2: world
GOW3: gameplay and bosses
Looking forward to Ragnarok fixing some of the gripes with 2018 shared by many of us longtime fans of the series.

The one thing i despise about this game and its sequel is any climbing section, they are actual snooze fests. I know its important for a first time playthrough, as thats where dome of the story is displayed. But on replays of the game, maybe do what ragnarok did and just teplave the climbing sections with much faster traversal
Man if they did use the old gow music when he got the blades of chaos that would've been epic but that opportunity was wasted just disappointing

The camera is way too close, enemies with near INSTANTANEOUS attack speed will eat your health bar on GMGOW difficulty because you couldn't fucking see them.
And then I-frames are terrible too, enemies will just tank your special attack and start wailing on you, but since you're locked in some long ass animation with no way to clip/cancel AND have no invincibility frames... you're fucked.
new combat is more tactical, old one was more button smashing.

"tactical". there are some good bosses, first baldur is really cool, same for magni and modi and sigrun, but the combat is not tactical most of the time.

Fantastic content, really passionate towards old God of War and that brutal power fantasy. Unfortunately all of that is gone and they butchered it hard. Kratos just became a weak man now, in Ragnarok they emasculated him even further and butchered Nordic mythos hardcore. The franchise is just dead. God of War III remains the absolute peak forever and as time goes as well because it's a timeless game. Also you mentioned DMC 5 that's how a game should provide fans what they deserve and what their characters need not this mess.
My feelings towards GOW 2018 is that it feels like it is ashamed of the prior games and the fact it is a videogame. The originals felt distinct, the combos were better offering rewards for players that played well. If they were going to make another GOW game they should have iterated on what was already there.
I am a fan of The Last of Us, still hate this God of War.

Technically he's hunting Fae, the wife/mother who was interfering with Odins' plans. Until now, she had a barrier placed around their home which prevented anyone from finding them-but with a caveat. The barrier was built on the trees she marked. The trees she requested Kratos to cut down and make her Pyre with. Knowing that this would inevitably reveal him and Atreus to the Norse Pantheon and force them into moving.
Why would she ask the to cut the trees then?

Coming from someone who played all the games but over a long period of time I remember loving this game when I first played it from the hype and the hack and slash aspects it was cool but when I thought about the game compared to all the others I felt cheated and then I thought about the downfall of videos games as a whole it’s depressing really

Looking at this from afar, one aspect I don't like is enemies that can one hit kill you or do serious damage without the right gear. That is forcing you to play and look a certian way! I wasn't feeling that. I want to get into god of war(the series) but I am probably not gonna play this.
Definitely play the ogs (even the psp ones, chains of Olympus has the most powerful ending of the franchise)

Finally, I got to play GOW at an amazing quality and framerate on PC (The game is really well optimized) and I'm a bit disappointed to be honest. Point to consider
1. I'm not fanboying for any company, except maybe Obsidian and old Bioware.
2 I'm used to playing on difficult and I like a well-balanced challenge.
3. I got the game for around $16 on Steam.
Here's what I didn't like:
1. I can't stop rolling my eyes every time Atreus speaks. The kid's annoying af...
2. I can't believe they decided to go with an American accent. Everything sounds out of place. The expression they use don't match the theme of the game at all.
3. I hated how the game takes you for an idiot. The menu tutorials gave me the impression that it was meant for slow people.
4. Commentary during combat, gets annoying, again this is Atreus. The issue could have been solved by ditching the over the shoulder camera during combat, similar to other games. You can't never know what's happening behind you without the boy yelling at you or the attack detection arrows.
5. On the hard difficulty enemies are sponges, that's it.
6. last but not least... Kratos is beta now... He's disrespected by everyone. The nail on the coffin was when he was sent to cut flowers... This is not the Kratos I remember during the PSP era.
Don't get me wrong, the game is really well done, art direction is ok and combat is great, but the direction they took screams "below average casual"

Really nice review overall. However i do have to say one thing. Gow 2018 is NOT an open world. Yes you have more freedom to explore than the previews games, there are more open section and branching paths, but overall is still a linear game. The game greatly limits and controls when and how you can explore certain areas. At best, i could say it's a semi-open world-ish game, but it's nowhere at the same level as Red Dead 2, Skyrim, Botw, Fallout, Gta etc.

Maybe it's because I played Demons Soul's just before, but to me, I see God of War 2018 as taking Souls games influence in their gameplay, where-as the old God of War had DMC influence. Then it just depends which type of gameplay you prefer, but it makes sense that 2018 is based on Souls since that's what's hot and cool right now, where-as before it was DMC and Bayonetta that was all the rage.
I did play it, besides the Ragnarok series what i do enjoyed a lot further than the 2018 game, indeed i would like to add the valhala dlc helped a lot to take more seriously and enjoy the game.
The blade of olympus, the greek enemies, the different rages, the shields, everything was a bit better than the last title but, im still feeling slowly when specially in the moments what I can't do real platforming only press O and wait until the animation its finished.
The old games specially the one were the best in platforming and combat system by far, maybe it wasnt as analitic as the ragnarok its, but being able of do that amount of movements, different kinda weapons, the bow of apollo everything was better in that way.
I miss having some more freedom of movement, and not lost the view on the screen of the enemies, i miss double jump and the aerial combat, the water sections in the temple of pandora, for me the game downgraded a lot, for a such "deep story"

32:08, this is IMO disingenuous. GOW can be as SIMPLE or COMPLEX AS YOU WANT. You can breeze through GOW 1-3 just using Square spam, or you can do all the other extra stuff and have fun with your combos.
GOW4 is much the same, albeit slower. It can be as SIMPLE or COMPLEX as you want.
Edit: watched a bit more, and I agree that Runic Attacks are a problem to gameplay. Combat starts as (Runic > Unbound Potential > Runics > Attacks > Repeat). Maybe in Ragnarok, remove it entirely. IMO, if they make a combo meter and once you reach a threshold, THEN you can use Runics. ALSO, remove Unbound Potential. I didn't even use it in GMGOW, I much enjoyed the TimeStop Dodge one, as it incentivizes me to dodge perfectly.
Edit2: Not sure, but the fast travel time is probably because game takes that long to "load" the map. they tried to alleviate the boredom somewhat via Mimir's stories. But once again, if you don't enjoy the Story or enthralled to hear the worldbuilding aspect, this WILL be boring to people
Then you never played the previous games clearly, as anyone who played the games will tell you that the square square triangle and square spam combo is a very ineffective damaging combo even on normal and the harder difficulties.
The combo does not work on every enemy, and it is a death sentence to use on specific encounters that require different approaches and it doesn't guarantee you a lot of health to be left with or exp to be earned in combat.
The combos are more used as a punt that allows you OPTIONS for follow-ups for big damage, increase in hit counter, and keeping enemy airborne.
1:04:55 not sure how you feel about this point now, but in Ragnarok, a plot element like this would've made Atreus an exponentially more interesting character, he's too boring in the second one for someone called "Loki"

Once he cut the last tree down the protection stave broke around their woods. Also Atreus being Loki doesnt explain the whiplash we get in his character development. It was poorly done. Loki also isnt "half good half evil", he's a trickster who ultimately causes Ragnarok. I've read books about Norse mythology, I have a general understanding of Loki. Atreus is just an annoying kid.
A Loki move would be revealing himself in the next game as Loki, not Atreus, and betraying Kratos. Basically the whole time he was a kid was an act, so that Kratos would get close to him and Loki could trick him for maximum harm. All of that time Kratos cared for Atreus would be a lie fabricated by Loki to fuck with him.

But the God Of War 1 footage, it was captured using a different capture device. It was a component input one, so not quite HDMI. I don't remember the brand off hand.

Just a minor nitpick with your calling GoW 2018 GOW4. There are other games that could claim the GOW4 title. In my opinion it should be GoW: Ascension. I could also claim Ghost of Sparta, but I’ll go with Ascension because of console release.
Those other games were not main titles. They were prequels and side stories. GoW 2018 has the best claim to number four and should have been called that.
That makes no sense cause they were prequels, not sequels. It's insulting that this shitass game is gow 4, but it is
if you do new game + and god of war mode despite the armor you have you can get one to two shot BY THE FIRST ENEMY and you don't even insta kill them with the buffs
Sad to say that Dante's Inferno is my favorite God of War game and I'm not sure why, maybe nostalgia even though I played all of the games at launch. It's probably just the catholic backdrop, God Of War 2 is goat though.
