  • God of War Restrospective. The series I've been planning to make since the new game was announced. With the reboot being released this Friday, I decided that this is the perfect time to take a look back at the original game that started it all.
    This is my most ambitious video to date by a long shot so I'd love to get any feedback you might be willing to provide for the next two videos in the coming weeks. I really appreciate you giving this a watch and hope you enjoy!

    Fun fact: every God of War game (except the newest one, I haven’t played it yet) has a spiral stair case you go up with the camera pointed top down. You mentioned cinematography and that immediately came to mind.

      I noticed that while replaying through the games. I think it is Ghost of Sparta that breaks up this sequence by blowing the staircase up midway through.

    The first 3 main entries to the game are some of my favorite games of all time. It was fun to play and I personally like that it wasn't overly complex or hard to master the combat system. To buttress your point on the story, this is the only game series ever that my wife would just watch me play, she would say:" I want to see what happens next" generally speaking she does not play or care about video games at all

    There’s a part where you say “if it’s not fun, it shouldn’t be in a video game”. I disagree, gaming has the potential to make you feel all sorts of emotions beyond just fun. All art forms have this potential. I agree that for this game in particular the sequence you were discussing doesn’t work in the way they intended but I don’t see the problem with the idea if it had been executed better.
    For example if a game develops a character that you grow to love and then requires the player to kill that character for important thematic reasons using mechanics throughout the game then of course that moment wouldn’t be fun. It would make you feel uncomfortable, sad, or horrified. All of those are perfectly acceptable emotions to feel in a game if executed correctly.

      You know, you're right. I do wish I could change that wording as what I meant was "entertaining" or "compelling" rather than specifically "fun"

      Shit like this is why gaming is where it is right now. The whole "cinematic" thing is getting on my nerves. If yall wanna play a glorified cutscene for 8 hours be my guest but now EVERY new game has to be like that. I blame "The Last of us". Feels like it made it a standard.

    • @HeyFella
      @HeyFella 6 років тому +16

      Georgi Hadzhiev except there’s plenty of gameplay focused experiences if you want them. Tons of great indie games, platformers, action games, puzzle games, etc. you’re focusing on the 2% of AAA games that try this. Even other AAA games like Monster Hunter World, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Breath of the Wild, etc don’t fall under the glorified movie category you’re putting them under. You only notice more when a game is similar to The Last of Us or Uncharted, there’s barely any games like that tho if you’re really counting. The internet has created this sort of reactionary counter opinion against anything even remotely “cinematic”. It’s like saying film shouldn’t take influence from literature and theatre. You’re acting like every game now is The Order 1886, when gameplay focused experiences like Dark Souls and Overwatch style shooters are some of the biggest most popular games out now.

    • @Bat-Georgi
      @Bat-Georgi 6 років тому +4

      I can agree with you to an extent but don't bring Overwifu into this. I cut my teeth on the Original Team Fortress Classic and the mod for Quake so that don't impress me. The thing is, when you have an IP, and you reboot it, it seems hip and cool for it to be in this, cinematic style. It happened with Tomb Raider, it has always been the case with the Modern Military shooters and now it happened to Kratos. While I am it, fuck David Cage and fuck Heavy Rain. I don't have an argument with that, I'm just venting.
      I know there are games which are still untouched by the cinematic plague but tell me, remember when the DMC reboot happened? We tore that thing a new one. But now, Kratos gets a free pass. And why? "It's mature". F U C K T H A T. You want maturity? Go play Silent Hill. It was "cinematic" long before all of this shit and it did it 10x better.
      To get back to the actual point, yeah if it ain't fun don't touch me with it. I've beating GoW 1 on god mode and the only reason I did it is because it was fun. Even if it was infuriating at times, it was still fun. It still looked good and played good and killing things was still fun. It never felt like a chore. I can't say the same for the new one or the DMC reboot. Hell Silent Hill, for all it's restrictions and old design choices, is still fun. It gets different emotions out of you but it is damn satisfying to wack or shoot things. The moment you take the fun out of it, well, can you really call it a game? Just make a novel out of it and be with it.

    • @HeyFella
      @HeyFella 6 років тому +4

      Georgi Hadzhiev I guess we just fundamentally disagree. I had fun in the new God of War plus a range of other emotions. All I can say is I’m glad there’s plenty of options for what types of games we want to play. You don’t have to like the new God of War and I can like it. However I do agree, fuck David Cage. Lol

    I actually played it for the first time recently and loved it to death honestly. It's very cathartic and fun being a ruthless killing machine.
    Though I do agree on the tightroping sections being annoying with horrible control. My balance isn't the best and it just makes me want to go back to slicing things lol
    Also Poseidon's Rage owns. It's very DBZ and I love it.

    This was really well done man. I see some other comments about some valid criticisms but they don’t take away from the video for me. You were able to speak about a series dear to me without constantly repeating yourself or sounding like you’re reading off of a script. The length of the video feels natural as opposed to stretched out and repetitive. Also showing relevant cutscenes and gameplay was good in keeping viewer attention. I can’t imagine this was easy to piece together, and with such a low sub count this is just working for free with little reward, and I respect that a lot because I can tell this video was important to you. You aren’t a massive channel just making a rinse and repeat video and that’s a great breath of fresh air. I’m definitely subbing and I’m excited to see you do more like this!

    okay this was beautifully well done retrospective, you gave this retrospective the effort it deserves I
    was very impressed at how well thought-out and informative this video was. you get a sub sir!
    you didn't talk about the God difficulty and the bonus stuff like the challenge room or the replay value like the unlockable skins
    as for the combat it is pretty much well known that once you unlock god difficulty and start playing you will start seeing just how amazing and akward the combat can be. this difficulty undeniable adds a new layer of depth and challenge to most of the fights you encounter along the way. the annoying parts do become about ten times more annoying because of how much damage you can take from an enemy attack, the beginning areas' enemies can pretty much kill you in 3 hits. and you start getting punished for making bad decisions and QTEs start becoming a strategy in the fights.
    those are the only things i thought you should have explored more.
    again beautiful video

    • @MightyNifty
      @MightyNifty  6 років тому +2

      Thanks so much! As far as your questions go, I decided against covering god mode both for the sake of time and as you said, it kinda just makes the good parts better and the frustrating parts worse. And I would have liked to cover the challenges, but they feel so separated from the main game that I felt keeping them out made the video more cohesive. Those are very good points though so thanks for sharing what you know!

    You know out of all the reviewers I came across, you're the only one that brought up the infamous difficulty fiasco. I remember how difficult this game was even on Normal. For the PS2 era, this was Ninja Gaiden trilogy NES difficult. The one good thing I'll say about it is you at least don't have to start several levels back if you die on the final boss. Still a very hard game.

    Gow 1 has the best, cohesive story in the franchise , including the new norse one. I enjoyed this one the most- maybe cuz it intruduced the not yet tired format- Ripping things in two, killing a god, finding the thing- repetitively reused and barely developed in the sequels. Climbing out of hades is badass the first time, doing it 3 times takes that away. Gow 1 lacks the annoying forced walking sections, and oscar bait feel of modern games, but it has its own ps2 generation annoyances, like the quick time events. It is the opposite of pretentious.
    Loved playing as An Atypical main character, about as bad as the antagonist.

    • @ripred42
      @ripred42 6 років тому +2

      Sander Tegneby it definitely has the best story, but GOW2 has the best of everything else (except for graphics and scale, which goes to gow3)

    • @nemeru3352
      @nemeru3352 6 років тому +2

      Agreed. It gets plenty of refinement, which is sorta thrown out in 3. 2 still has the most enemy types i think. 3 has the best bosses. I liked Zeus, he was a more compelling antagonist, But underused
      Tho it has superior puzzles, enemies, for me, I much prefer pandora's temple as a setting and its environments, the island of creation is just kinda pretty,but bland out door and indoor places , with a very dull color palette compared to the first game vibrancy.
      2 felt like it was dragging all the way into the temple before the sisters for me, Which i didn't feel with the first game. too little going on with its story for the length it had.

    • @ripred42
      @ripred42 6 років тому +2

      Sander Tegneby hmmm, I felt the opposite. Gow1 seemed to have the blandest environments (basically the desert temple, and burning Athens) whereas the island was a bit more varied, take for example the beginning which takes place on the giant horses. Tho gow3 definitely had the most spectacular boss fights, I still think gow2 did a great job of expanding the amount in gow1 (three whole fights), while still making the big boss fights feel epic. God of war 3 almost was too epic, and those moments had less impact when you fight a giant spectacular boss over and over again.

    Just finished your vid. This was a very fair review. I agree that this game has aged on some level, I've played this game god knows how many times, and many of the annoying bits you highlighted annoyed me as well, but yet, I still constantly come back to this game, there's something about it that's just special.
    I have to kind of disagree on there being a shortage of quiet sections, while there are a shit ton of enemy encounters, the quiet sections that the game has are just amazing. After you leave the Oracle's temple, you can ascend the cliffs that overlook the sea, and travel to the cliff that you see Kratos throw himself off of at the beginning of the game, and the main theme plays in this tranquil and beautiful low key that's absolutely haunting. Plus the cinematography is just goddamn incredible, because the camera cranes downward as Kratos reaches the cliff, to the point where all you see is his silhouette against the night sky.
    There's a few moments like that that, for me, make up for the fact that there's a shit ton of enemy encounters. Whenever you leave Athens and the orchestra just starts out big and the chorus chimes in, JESUS it never fails to stir a reaction from me. You're leaving this city behind at the mercy of this sadistic Olympian, and the choir feels like some kind of eulogy or something.
    All the moments where you see stuff in the background, like when you're climbing these cliffs and you see a top down view of Cronos crawling across the desert in the background, or when you get to the Cliffs of Madness and you can see Athens burning in the Horizon.
    The side story with the architect was also compelling, and none of it was told via cutscene, there's so much this game communicates to you without ever exiting the gameplay. That's why it's still my favorite entry in the whole franchise, it has this immaculate atmosphere that none of the other games have come close to replicating.
    Sorry about the long post.

    • @MightyNifty
      @MightyNifty  6 років тому

    A bit of criticism here. Towards the later half of the video you say it's not a big deal that some sections of the game get frustrating because it won't take too long until you're onto something else. However in section 10 you dedicate minutes of script to point out that the game unnecessarily drags. The length and detail put into that criticism somewhat invalidated your earlier statement, given that it seems as if you think it's a big enough problem to talk at length about it.
    I think those two talking points: the forward momentum of the level design changing regularly, and the fact some sections go on too long, should have been combined in the script. This way you don't need to revisit an earlier talking point later in the video.
    Otherwise its all really good. Judging by the rest of your videos long form content like this isn't your main bread and butter but I hope you do more videos like this.

    • @MightyNifty
      @MightyNifty  6 років тому +3

      Thanks for pointing that out! I think it's got more to do with the sections in which I mentioned those. Like how fluid animation might look really nice and be welcome for presentation, but could be criticized in terms of making combat clunky (for example, not for this game), but I see where you're coming from. Glad you enjoyed the video! :D

    Combat while climbing those nets is"nt frustrating if you use the moves available like grabbing an enemy with O and bashing it against the ropes(or wall) and pull them down from above ;or you you could jump climb up top and deal with enemies there.As for the part where you have to kick a box while archers are firing isn"t hard either and just a matter of timing

    I have to disagree about the hydra not having telegraphed moves. It twists its body a certain direction and you can consistently tell which side it’s going to bite, it even does a specific movement before it’s scream attack. The only attack I couldn’t figure out the tell for was the fast bite the smaller heads do when you get too close. I was constantly getting hit by those

  • @ninswoop
    @ninswoop 2 місяці тому

    Idk why... But whenever I watch a retrospective... It's glaringly obvious that they didn't play the game in its entirety... God of wars God mode is one of the hardest games I've ever played.
    They come in it as if it's easy because they're playing it on easy. On easy you can play the game and not differentiate in between your tactics. When you're playing it on the motor difficult settings you have to learn the other attacks. And utilize them when the time is needed.

    • @ninswoop
      @ninswoop 2 місяці тому

      2nd criticism. Most of the critiques are based on the limitations of the hardware itself or based comparing games that come 5 to 10 years later.

    • @ninswoop
      @ninswoop 2 місяці тому

      3rd criticism. You're asking for more breaks in the action and then criticizing them for breaks in the action. Plank walking. When quite a few of the puzzle solving areas do have a lack of action.

I have to say that the way the temple was made and how the PS2 was able to take run these graphics and for how good the game actually looked for 2006. It’s definitely in my top 10 games

    Yeah, the balance beam obstacle course during the Challenge of Hades, and the Spinning Pillars of Doom in Hades (funny how both are related to Hades) were two of my least favourite parts from the game. But the puzzles are definitely the game's strong suit, at least compared to the platforming. However, I will say that the one with the block you have to push before the floor spikes come up is infuriatingly bad, since there is zero wiggle room to succeed if you're just a little bit slow. And the one where you must push the Athenian soldier (or an undead one if you're playing the censored version) in a cage up the incline, while having to fight through so many of the more tougher undead soldiers, until you can go to the next point to rest the cage

    One question: You mention that you played the re-release, which seems to be the version on display here, but why didn’t you play it in full screen? The version I own has the option of basically zooming in and covering the entirety of the screen instead of having these unnatural looking black bars around it.

    • @MightyNifty
      @MightyNifty  5 років тому

      As far as I can tell the video doesn't have black bars, but maybe I'm mistaken? Only certain parts with developer commentary have them because that's how the commentary is framed.

    • @robinanwaldt
      @robinanwaldt 5 років тому

      MightyNifty Yes, the developer commentary has massive black bars around it, but the gameplay has some too, only really tiny, but noticeable still. I presume it’s because the God of War Collection is in 720p instead of 1080p.

    • @MightyNifty
      @MightyNifty  5 років тому

      Ohhh, I didn't check which video this comment was on and thought it was the Jak and Daxter retrospective. I chose not to play it in full screen to be more true to the original while also preserving the cinematic feel they were going for. It's not for everyone though so I probably could have mentioned that choice in the video haha

    The first god of war was actually trash when it came to combat machines. I liked the game just bc of the added story to the series as a whole. Tho the broken circle smashing quick time events just took all the fun out of the game and made the final boss fight a total drag. The combat itself was just messy, and the lack of intense boss fights and crazy random things happening throughout the game made the game drag on like a mf. I also hated the constant boring puzzle after puzzle the game kept throwing in your face. Tho it was their first game and old as hell so I'll give them a break. Every other game after the first one was perfect. God of war 2 was the one that sucked me into the series tbh. Just could never get passed the broken combat in one. The only part I liked in one was the first fight with the hydra. Idk tho, I'm sure there's people who disagree. Just my opinion on the game.

    the 3 things that make darksiders better than god of war are 1 darksiders has a better story and a more immersive world that actually feels alive since there is an in universe reason for everything that exists 2 the story of the darksiders games may not be tightly connected but they are meant to showcase each horseman's role in the overall story i do admit that god of war shares this trait but in darksiders case its not overly complacated example in darksiders 1 ulthane gives war mercy we are never told why untill darksiders 3 there are plot points like these all over the series in god of war the revealations come from nowhere in one off sequences that are forgotten just as quickly in darksiders case these actually help you keep pace with the story and understand the world as a whole 3 god of war has far too many button mashing qte's that can make progression impossible if your reflexes are not fast enough darksiders 1 only has this in the final boss fight darksiders 2 also does this as well but only during the fight with the crowfather but you can pass the fight even if you fail the qute unlike god of war and the first daksiders DS3 doesnt have any qte's at all and all of this coming from a guy who has beaten god of war 1 2 3 ghost of sparta and chains of olympus ghost of sparta is the best simply because of callisto's bracelet that gives you an automatic win when it comes to every qte i wish the other games had an item that bypassed the qtes

    God of war 1 is the perfect one, the sequels were a mistake.
    Like many other series the squels muddy the water and bend established lore so the whole plot kinda loses meaning.
    I just want an honest and true remake of the 1st god of war with the graphics of god of war 3. No "reimmagined" bullshit, no retcons or liberties in the plot. I want as close to the original as a remake they con do because god of war 1 really deserves better graphics to truly make those cinematic set pieces shine

    I read comments ,ı wanna add some things
    It is still my favourite game.In long term i prefer skyrim anyway i have some critics on video
    5:44 you saying climbing is slow boring useless..It is not slow at first you are able to jump.Even climbing you have many combat option to use.I dont think useless because different and it showing Kratos can fight every where and also part.
    after you are complaining during box sliding why it is destroying?Because those moment we should learn archers using bow frequancy.Game shows it is not ordinary platforms.
    ın some part telling abouth enemies are repetetive.U kinda right but thinking variation of enemies i dont know.There are too many enemies.Even archers evolving they will starting throw bombing arrows.
    u complined some huge life bars.U could use medusa gaze,Rage or trying throw out to stage.After all for example most of time u could just skip without killing
    47:16 i am fighting gamer and that part i loved.there are many people loving dark souls for difficulty.This game only difficult in platforms if u dont play at hard.
    yeah thats all .Great video thank very much.

    You used Skyward Sword to compare God of War is a very terrible example. There a huge year ago between. Those 2. I can see the Zelda element. Chest,check,collecting pieces to increase health,check,going around a dungeon collecting power ups defeating bosses? Check. If you're going by art style then again Skyward Sword a terrible example. 2005 right? So Twilight Princess would be the better one to choose of that time.

    “Lots of poor design choices.” I liked your idea for a mixed blue, green, and red orb chest to reward good players-I had never even thought about that idea before; however, sometimes you sound like a hater who can’t stand that everything won’t go your way in a Video Game. They’re meant to be challenges that require YOU to solve, not the creators to make everything obvious, quick, and full of basic, cut and dry puzzles. Sorry you couldn’t figure out that the two moveable statues have two purposes at the Temple of the Oracle, and I’m sorry to hear that everything that takes patience is actually “tedious” and “poorly designed” because it wasn’t instantly over. I guess they should have called you in 2004 so they could properly make an action series with obligatory combo counters and sex scenes.
