forgetting that this is all backstory and set up for Superman as a character, I would totally watch a movie about Krypton, Jor El, Zod and the rest. It just looks like awesome sci-fi/space fantasy world-building...
1:11 it's interesting that he brings up Jor Rel, his friend and enemy, being right about how the counsel were all bringing about their own destruction. It just goes to show the amount of respects that he had for him despite their point of view of how things should be for the greater good of Krypton.
This movie is severely underrated. Everything about it is phenomenal (I mean, I think how they portrayed Kryptonian society as a whole was pretty depressing, but that's just proof that they really put emotion into the movie). Also, something else I loved about this movie is how they designed the fight scenes. The sheer scale of the fights themselves are absolutely insane and outclass any other superhero fights I can think of. Not just that, but whenever superman and zod punch each other, there are VISIBLE shockwaves in the air. That effect really helps to immerse you in the idea of exactly how insanely powerful both of them are.
I only got into the superhero stuff, and barely, when my friends in high school and I went to see these movies. Not long before I was introduced to Marvel through The Avengers, but didn't know any of the characters since DC's are more cultural icons and famous like Superman and Batman. But when I saw Man of Steel I was shocked at how amazing it was. Marvel movies, except for a few very pivotal ones, are a dime a dozen and more like episodes in a TV show while I told my friends Man of Steel was worth like 10 MCU movies put together! The people into this stuff don't really understand my logic, but coming at it impartially I saw an entire world be genuinely crafted in Man of Steel and then a very human character coming to grips with life on this planet and a real narrative building around it. I didn't watch any of the other DC movies when they came out later, and heard they weren't as good as this, but Man of Steel was just awesome.
The main issue, besides the story is precisely those fights. They are not things superman would do. Superman would never run destroy buildings with tons of innocents nearby. He would've more likely pushed the fight elsewhere to somewhere abandoned where there would be no casualties. Or he would at least have tried to prevent collateral damage during his fights. That single thing would've made the movie MUCH better. The movie is ok if it weren't Superman. Because honestly a lot of people felt like they completely missed who superman is.
Not gonna lie, I was 7 when this movie came out, Michael Shannon's performance as Zod scared the shit outta me as a kid. That's to show how good he is, what an underrated actor and an underrated performance of a DC villain
@Keith Rutsky Jesus Christ Stamp scared the shit outta me too when I was a kid in the 90s! The perfect Zod (Shannon was excellent too, but Stamp SCARES ME to this day!)
This was an incredible film. The acting from an incredible cast is off the charts. The special effects unique and top notch. Masterpiece. Real shame the sequels went downhill, massive lost opportunity.
you know why the sequels went downhill? coz after this came out everyone cried its not like Marvel movies, so DC execs pressured Zack Snyder to remove the dark and serious tone and make it jokey and colorful, thats what he did with sequels and other DCEU movies. if anyones to be blamed here its the journalists, and loud mouth youtubers who incorrectly reviewed this movie, they wore Marvel glasses and watched this and it didnt meet their standards. imagine how Zack Snyder feels now.................
@@yt_hatesfreespeech idk at that time (2013/14) there were pretty serious marvel movies as well, take The winter soldier (still my favorite tho) such a dark and serious tone for a marvel movie
In the 1978 Version ("Superman: The Movie"): "You have been known to disagree with the Council before? Yours could become an important Place in the New Order, second only to my own! I offer you a Chance for Greatness, Jor-El, so take it and join us! You will bow down before me; I swear it! That, is Krypton's version of Private ranked PYLE (from Full Metal Jacket) speaking after he was caught. And spitting phlegm is beneath any act of a real General
I agree but I like Terence Stamp's General Zod better and his act of defiance was better when he says to Jor El " The vote must be unanimous Jor El. It has therefore become your decision. You alone will condemn us if you wish and you alone will be held responsible by me. Join us. You have been known to disagree with the Council before. Yours could become a voice in the new order second only to my own. I offer you a chance for greatness Jor El. Take it. Join us. I always said they needed to do like a remake of Superman 2. This was so well done it hurts that Henry Cavill will not returning as Superman. I love Lady Laura’s outfit and her strength even when facing death!
I will admit. I really enjoyed his portrayal as Zod. I don’t normally talk about how good an actor is but at 1:00 The silent glare, hesitating before suddenly bursting into anger. Anyone who’s ever felt an intense pain and anger knows what this guy is feeling. Standing there in a quiet rage trying to act restrained before letting your thoughts burst out. He did an amazing job.
Couple that with how it looked like that freezing process looks like it hurts tremendously but he stone-faces it through his anger. Real good stuff right there.
Yeah, I agree. I never cared for the character before this movie, and this guy actually kind of got me interested in the character. That says a lot for a movie a lot of people say is bad.
@Hei Darkfire when I was a young kid the only villian of Superman that knew was Lex Luthor but as I got older I learned about other villians like Doomsday, General Zod and Darkseid.
With this General Zod version I don't show any sympathy to him since what he was doing would be considered crazy and mad, but there are 3 Marvel villians I have shown some sympathy towards and they are Magneto, Otto Octavius/Doc Ock and Venom (it's mostly their backstory to how they become the villains is where I show sympathy). With villains it's not just their powers or abilities I'm interested in but it's their backstory is what interests me the most and it happens me learn about the character and what they're reasons are for doing bad things
That line makes the elders cowards but the Elders felt that Zod and his people weren't worthy enough to die on there planet so they spared there life by taking away that right and that honor to die as a Kryptonian which was taken from Zod hurt him more.
I never understood it either but I believe it's because they made superman a flat character and basically made him Jesus. I personally enjoyed the way he was portraited in the movie, was more relatable to me. Action was great, acting was great, story was great
@@reinerbraun7115 It might have been simple but it was effective. Superman really did learn the biggest lesson; to believe in yourself. Before this he was a lost soul.

Wonder Woman was just as good. Justice League is not THAT bad. Yes, it has its issues, especially considering it had two directors. But, it was still a fun movie. Batman v Superman should have been done after a Man of Steel sequel, and should not have been VERSUS. Suicide Squad could have been good it they went up against a more grounded villain such as Deathstroke, or Kobra.
Ultron- 9 looool Iron Man 2 and Thor better than BvS? Are you sure about that? Man I bet BvS will be a master piece in 2 or 3 years time. I remember how much everyone hates MoS when it was in cinema. Now everyone love it!
Impossible... We have to see him against DCEU Darkseid, and Martian Manhunter along with Green Lantern joining Zack Snyder's Justice League, all of that build-up in that 4 hour long movie cannot go into nothingness... They will hire him, trust me
General Zod actually isn't a villain. He didn't want to kill Jor-El. He is an idealist and a patriot, who can sacrifice all he have including his own life for Krypton.
It should be frowned upon, it's fucking stupid and has no logical justification if you start from reasonable modern moral axioms idk about "pride", that's quite vague. But when you start bringing up related actionable ideas like patriotism and protectionism they're dumb
Zod is such an underestimated and underrated villain!!! His motivation, he’s threatening, he’s ruthless, he does what he feels needs to be done. I like how he never wavers either. It’s cool to see the idea of protecting his home and his people guide his actions. He never boasts about destroying the human race, he just sees it as a necessary cost to bring his civilization back. Zod shows he doesn’t take any pleasure in killing everyone, but like Thanos and his mission, Zod will do whatever he needs to make sure Krypton survives, he’s lethal!!!
And given his motivation, which was not of greed or avarice but of the genuine desire to protect his people, I cannot hate him. He did nothing wrong, not in a moral sense. As a human, I would oppose him for the same reasons he would oppose me, but as a Kryptonian, well, I would have to support him. He is a man of sheer will.
Zod did take pleasure in it and it wasn't necessary. He could have gone to countless planets and terraformed them. He chose earth because he wanted to punish Kal-El for what his parents did. His actions at the end also show this side of him. When there was no chance he could bring back the kryptonians he was still determined to kill all of humanity.
@@brandonreed09 Zod said “a foundation has to be built on something” when discussing bringing back Krypton with Superman. This implies a certain amount of life had to exist on the planet Zod chose to turn into Krypton for the terraforming world engine to successfully pull it off
@@brandonreed09 Not quite. That was just momentary rage. Basically spitting "so near, yet so far" on Zod as he was close to securing the codex before Kal-El suppressed him. He was only hellbent on killing humanity when Kal purged the Kryptonites to the Phantom Zone, and Zod had no people to serve. It wasn't just vengeance. It was also a plea to death.
Really an awe-inspiring scene. The majesty, power and incredible technological advancement and sophistication of Kryptonian civilisation. The age of it, the harshness of their judgements. All feel truly alien and chilling. And the art and visual design is just magnificent. I'd have loved a film or series focusing on a storyline about Krypton.
Their story here is similar to real life history on when a nation closes its borders and reopens horribly underdeveloped compared to the rest of the world, examples being China and Japan. This universe’s krypton seems to have taken a prestige kinda idea of homeworld is best world at the cost of ignorance to the cost not being sustainable to their advancements. It would be cool to see the downfall of such a powerful nation as it would be a cool subversion from the norm which in media nowadays has been to focused too much on showing growth.
The production value of this movie was near perfect. Incredible music, sound, editing, special effects. Sure, the movie had a few things off, but was still highly underrated.
Zod really was an incredible antagonist in this film. He was absolutely gutted that he had to kill Jor-El, a man whom he clearly had the utmost admiration and respect for and a man he called his friend. Yet his duty was to save Krypton and save his race and he knew it had to come first.
Say whatever you want naysayers. This is the best superman movie there is now. Just like I would have imagined it would be from comic to movie. Buildings coming down when kryptonians crash through them. Thank you Zack Snyder.
@@midnightblue360 You completely missed the point of that scene it was about Clark understanding the stakes that are involved how his existence could impact the world and BvS perfectly showed how his choice to be a hero had consequences, this is what makes superman great he does it regardless and faces the consequences but he was a child when that bus crashed not yet ready to face the world and Johnathan was a parent who knew that and could see how the world would respond to the existence of his son. John expressed a level of selfishness that all parents have a strong desire to protect his son, its not about wanting children to die he didnt want that at all he just wants clark to understand how impactful his actions are that he cant just be using his abilities without consequences even if it was the right thing to do, thats why he stopped clark from saving him in the tornado to he wanted him to live as normal a life as possible. its not to say that John was completely right but his actions where the actions of a father who wanted his son to live a life of peace
Too little too late, Snyder and his wife were bullied by the Hollywood press and UA-camrs after this movie came out, they were trashed for not making these movies like Marvel movies, there was a point he had to disable his social media accounts and his wife had to explain ppl why he is no longer communicating. Imagine how he feels now, DCEU could have been great if DC execs didnt force him to change everything to match Marvel.
Hands down! Zach Snyder's "Man of Steel" is the best Superman movie I have seen in my life thus far! This movie is absolutely phenomenal in my opinion! I find the story, scientific concepts, philosophical ideas, acting, directing, music, cinematography and visual effects to be just powerful! It is definitely one of my favorite movies. I would even say it is one of the top ten films so far from the 2010s decade, along with "Cloud Atlas", "Les Miserables", "Coriolanus", "The Great Gatsby", "Exodus: Gods and Kings" and "12 Years A Slave".
Michael Shannon makes all his performances so entertaining, either very seriously or very comedically. Here he does both. His overacting/agressive performance (overacting is not negative, he just chews a lot of scenery) makes it so entertaining to watch him and especially how he delivers his lines. That means he's never really boring.
A Krypton origin movie is desperately what we need! One where it shows Zod’s increasing distrust of the council, and Jor-el’s desperate faith that they will prevail when it counts. Only for both of them to be devastated when the council hammered the final nail in Krypton’s coffin. Jor-el expressed his disappointment by making sure his new son would escape the planet before making any kind of plan for anybody else. Meanwhile Zod expresses his disappointment with an uprising. Though his vision for the future is grim, his reasons for attempting to usurp the council were completely justified.
When MoS came out in 2013, there were a lot of discussion regarding the prequel. There was even a comics. I don't remember exactly but I assume Snyder was interested in a prequel but then WB urged Snyder to put Batman and extend the universe which led to pre-production of BvS.
I love how the Loyalist Kryptonian ships fired only at Zod's ship when it chased after Kal. I like to think that they either thought it was Jor-El escaping or they knew the importance of the Pod and protected it from being destroyed
no ,space travel is forbidden by kryptonian high council .The reason Kal-El Ship is safe ,it's because sapphire guards just fight zod rebellion forces and ignore anything which doesn't belong them .Remember ,Sapphire Guards it self is a soldier from warrior guild who artificial programmed to become loyal to kyptonian law council whatever the order
Any Kryptonians who were created by the codex at the time this war occurred would have been killed by a matrix that surrounded Krypton until the planet was destroyed that was set to kill anyone who tried to flee. The reason Kal El successfully fled Krypton in that spaceship is because unlike everyone else, Kal El was created as the result of natural birth. Kal El’s natural birth is why the matrix never activated when he was sent to Earth in that space ship
Jesus this movie was so good for it's time, all these years later and I still rewatch this opening just for Michael Shannon's parts, not to downplay the rest of the film, which is also spectacular.
"I will find him!" Dammmm you can feel the rage and impotence of Zod when he scream to Laura. . Pd: He probably was thinking all the option he had to find Kal-El and find no one

It just goes to show the amount of respects that he had for him despite their point of view of how things should be for the greater good of Krypton.
Charles Xavier vs Magneto.
@@Awakeningspirit20 sadly people trashed when it came
Yea but justice league sucks!!!
The main issue, besides the story is precisely those fights.
They are not things superman would do. Superman would
never run destroy buildings with tons of innocents nearby.
He would've more likely pushed the fight elsewhere to somewhere
abandoned where there would be no casualties. Or he would
at least have tried to prevent collateral damage during his fights.
That single thing would've made the movie MUCH better.
The movie is ok if it weren't Superman. Because honestly
a lot of people felt like they completely missed who superman is.
The fight is inspired by anime like birdy the mighty and Dragonball. Looks nothing like superman cartoon. I was blown away
Not gonna lie, I was 7 when this movie came out, Michael Shannon's performance as Zod scared the shit outta me as a kid. That's to show how good he is, what an underrated actor and an underrated performance of a DC villain

I was 6 but I but the only thing i remember was the poster and the part where Kal uses his X-Ray Vision at school but that’s it

There's a movie where Shannon sees some weird apocalypse and he builds a bunker and he was amazing in that too
@Hei Darkfire when I was a young kid the only villian of Superman that knew was Lex Luthor but as I got older I learned about other villians like Doomsday, General Zod and Darkseid.
You won’t kill us yourself, u wouldn’t sully your hands but you’ll dam us to a black hole for eternity, sent chills up my spine.
That line makes the elders cowards but the Elders felt that Zod and his people weren't worthy enough to die on there planet so they spared there life by taking away that right and that honor to die as a Kryptonian which was taken from Zod hurt him more.

It should be frowned upon, it's fucking stupid and has no logical justification if you start from reasonable modern moral axioms

You almost feel that, in a parallel universe, Jor-El and Zod joined forces at the end.

Michael Shannon really is a great actor, pretty underrated.
And the climax would be the civil war breaking out (and extended version of what we saw in Man of Steel)
When MoS came out in 2013, there were a lot of discussion regarding the prequel. There was even a comics. I don't remember exactly but I assume Snyder was interested in a prequel but then WB urged Snyder to put Batman and extend the universe which led to pre-production of BvS.

well basically anything escaping from zod's forces are allies
no ,space travel is forbidden by kryptonian high council .The reason Kal-El Ship is safe ,it's because sapphire guards just fight zod rebellion forces and ignore anything which doesn't belong them .Remember ,Sapphire Guards it self is a soldier from warrior guild who artificial programmed to become loyal to kyptonian law council whatever the order
Unarmed and unknown ship launching is no immediate threat. Primary targets are combatants and the mission arrest of General Zod and his accomplices.
Its called the plot convenience
Any Kryptonians who were created by the codex at the time this war occurred would have been killed by a matrix that surrounded Krypton until the planet was destroyed that was set to kill anyone who tried to flee.
The reason Kal El successfully fled Krypton in that spaceship is because unlike everyone else, Kal El was created as the result of natural birth. Kal El’s natural birth is why the matrix never activated when he was sent to Earth in that space ship

I mean look at the panel, old people just waiting to die of old age. They don't care about the new generation. Get the energy now so it benefits them on the spot, but who cares about what will happen in the long run. Consequences won't affect them because they've already lived their lives. Regardless of race, its all the same.
The Kryptonians were such an advanced civilization. They were able to bend and manipulate the very fabric of space.
Yet a majority of Kryptonians didn’t even think that their home planet is about to explode.
THE most underrated superhero movie of all time.
Every minute of this movie was beyond perfection.
"because he was a traitor and a murderer, we will save him and spare his life, but we will all die in a moment" LOL Is this movie for mentally retarded people?
Oh the epicness of this movie!! Zack snider went above and beyond for this movie!! Now I have to watch it again.
*When WB said that they wouldn’t release a sequel to Zack Snyder’s Justice League.*
Me to WB: 1:13
Lmao I can relate 😂💔
WB: no sequel
ALL ANGRY FANS: WE WILL find it we will reclaim what you have taken from us
WB:😬
//: we will find it warner WE WILL FIND IT
May be add the spitt ... F u .. warbro
For me was: 0:34
that "i will find him!" in 1:39 still gives me chills and goosebumps.
Such an underrated movie. I loved this version with the deeper background on the characters.
Best movie but so many retards hate on it
Saying shit like "underrated" and "Literally" are two of the most used and universally misunderstood expressions in language this decade. The movie is underappreciated, yes, but underrated?
"It grossed $668 million worldwide, becoming the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2013."
@@KH4444444444N I didn’t say literally first off. Secondly, it was considered underrated by quite a few sources. Sites like Popverse, Quora, Comic book, fandom, a few others called it underrated.
I thought it was a great movie.
@@KH4444444444Nthe movie scored low with critics I believe. An underrated movie.
@@flymasterkyle1277 Critics don't matter at all.
1:39 literally shivering from anger
I’ve never seen this in any actor before
And the music that plays is just cherry on top
“The mother of a flying demon must be a witch, what’s the punishment for a witch?....that’s right, DEATH BY FIRE”-lex Luther
Man of steel: mother dies by fire 🔥
So so true
Woah
I wanna see him say that to lara's face. See how luthor takes it.
MCU fanboys will never admit this, but this movie is pure power projection and chaos on higher stakes than anything MCU has produced. The ending with the world engine terraforming Earth while Zod and Superman level the entire city of Metropolis. Insanity. Nothing Marvel has done for on screen feats has come close. It's true. Breathe it in.
I really like that they took their time with the opening scene. 20 minutes of Krypton. So epic!
Imagine you are in space and seeing earth getting destroyed like that 4:07
You would probably die because the explosion would act as an emp to whatever ship you're on so you'd run out of oxygen and die instantly
That would be a nightmare
Zod is by far the second best villain (villain from a certain point of view) next to Joker. Outstanding performance. He had a cause and fought it till his last breathe
Well if you went to some alien planet and got superpowers and had only one chance to restore human population again i would have done the same as him. He cant be blamed for his actions. Zod was a good guy. Well he was a villain for humans in this movie :-)
I agree except for the suicide squad joker that one was not meant to exist
*the jimster that's always poppin* Obviously he’s referring to Heath Ledger’s Joker.
Bro their is no competition when it comes to Heath Ledger's joker being the best villain in the DC universe, my rank would be 1. HL's Joker 2.General Zod & 3.Bane
@@tobiuchiha809 I personally think Orm and Black Manta come third now, they were epic
The Music is what made this scene so EPIC!
Costume, Set design & those Spaceships, the Kryptonian landscape....Movie was light years ahead in terms of a vision for Superman...IMO 🤔
