The problem buying all parts from Puerto Rico is that the shipping makes it expensive, 20% higher, and is taking longer for delivery, trust me on this, I am Puertorican , and live on the Island. I bought 2 solar panels and took 3 weeks for delivery.
Yes, small systems can be a real solution for life support machines, many have already died because of no electric power.
Thank you for your True Heart Jehu

For those who want to shave a bit of cost without sacrificing quality, there are used cases on eBay, typically for about $15. They're not Pelican brand but they're just as durable and weatherproof. Might take some modifications to this design but I don't think anyone watching this channel is afraid of making modifications.

Also harbor freight just started carrying a good looking knock-off brand

    • @mspark400smith2

Charles Eye that’s great news I love my pelican cases for my cameras mostly but this sized case could be $60-100 if genuine which is a relatively massive cost for a a case and unsuitable for this type of charity project and a lot of diy in general since the case often costs more than all the tech. Plus even as a an American who can afford pelican when I splurge a bit for certain items it’s really good to know there are decent alternatives or knockoff because for most people the price is a real sticking point even for a small case for things that do need that level of protection. Don’t get me wrong they are almost indestructible, lockable, very waterproof but adjust to pressure differentials w a valve and pick and pluck foam that just works well. However as a heavy DIYer and drone enthusiast etc. and the numerous project boxes required can be a bit of a challenge together with the waterproofing and good good seals and this walls and sill be lockable is a huge gain over most other options and can’t really be beat imo for projects that will end up outdoors at all and being able to get them cheaper than pelican is game changer for me. I make a lot of projects and there are plenty that type of case would be perfect for and they make a variety of other sizes, so the price reduction while keeping a lot of the features is very exciting. I’d only seen very flimsy ones in the past that weren’t even knockoff quality and had no use to me really but I’ll definitely be doing some browsing for project box upgrades now that I know there are ones of sufficient quality hopefully and I find the design very versatile if you’re willing to drill a hole in your new pelican box hahahah thanks again for the info to both of you! Cheers and best wishes !

      @McScott76 6 років тому +1

Yeah... I was just looking at them. They appear to be nearly identical to Pelican. And when you apply that 20% off coupon, the price is really good.

    Awesome video.
There is one potentisl problem with your plan. US Airlines will not send more than 100 watt hour lithium-ion battery pack. You can have multiple 100 watt hour battery packs, but not one single battery pack with more than 100 watt hours. I read an exemption is being worked on for lithium iron phosphate battery chemistry, but lithium-ion is definitely a no-go. The other thing was the 16 volt output. That's going to fry most 12-volt DC devices, so I would suggest using and 12v UBEC, to regulate the cigarette lighter plugs out to something around 13.6v.
Quietly watching and enjoying your videos. I think this is the first time I've commented. Perhaps I'll do a video response.
    Awesome idea.

@OH8STN Good point. They could be shipped via boat. Just thinking off the top of my head. If a US non-profit was formed (can be done fairly cheaply) they could purchase the semi-based sea land trailers and then fill it will a boat load (okay a partial load) unassembled systems/kits. If this was done close to say Jacksonville etc and someone had knowledge of the shipping industry they could get this shipped over for an appropriate cost. Maybe even as an add on to a vessel the may not have a full docket.
Lets say its $1000 to buy the shipping container. A model for total kits (~500 ea) and people served could be developed and a non-profit donation or kickstart campaign could be started. If non-profit's maximizes money sent (i.e. admin costs

What I did for the 12v output on my own portable power bank is to run it thru a 30A bridge rectifier. That means that I can even charge the internal battery up without being concerned about polarity and the voltage drop across the diodes means that the output is about 15.5v which is fine for most 12v items since the charging voltage of a Lead Acid battery is between 14-16VDC. One thing I did not see in the build was fuses or circuit breakers. That would be a requirement for something like this.

16volts is still tolerable, most car INPUT outlets run around 14.5-14.7 volts when in operation...not precisely 12v...lithium batteries are expensive, time consuming and difficult to solder and wire up, good old lead acid car batteries are the safest, robust, voltage and heat tolerant, cheapest easily plug and use available power storage for emergencies! (i mean you can plug a solar panel directly to a car battery without any controller and it will still charge safely though not a proper way to do it, without safety circuits built in to it, ITS HIGHLY TOLERANT TO OVER CHARGE IN THE SHORT TERM)

  • @joelashdod7712
    @joelashdod7712 6 років тому +41

There is a defect in the design. Notice at 13.09 that the load current is .6 amps and nothing is connected. That is because he has loaded the system down with multiple voltage regulators (for the 12 volt output) and the inverter (for 120 output) and these are on line at all times. even when not in use. There should be a cutoff switch on each load so that only the loads in actual use will draw current. I calculated 47% power loss in 24 hours of idle with no load.

Awesome build. I'm living in the British Virgin Islands which was decimated by Hurricane Irma and have built something similar but bigger using 800ah of Cell Site batteries. Currently running small fridge, deep freezer, some fans, TV and wireless modem all day with the help of solar and generator charging. Doing things yourself to upgrade your quality of life in these situations is the difference between living and surviving.

    NIce work.
You didn't cheap out on the design, so once built, the user will have something worth having down the road. I would add some RTV to the components mounted with tape (especially the fan, as it will hang up if it shifts). Once cured, it's secure enough, and easily removed if needed. A thin foam pad between the battery pack and other side of the assembly and a few spots of RTV to anchor the battery packs wouldn't hurt either. If these are shipped (by almost any method or distance), the vibration will disassemble them enroute if you don't anchor stuff well.
Hope it catches on and helps some people out.

I'm on the process of researching and building a similar system. I have diabetic family members who need to refrigerate their medicines. We didn't have an issue with it because family had a gas power generator, but that took a toll on finances, running it for weeks gets really expensive. And the fuel couldn't get to the gas stations for a some time and the lines were literally, mile long and the wait was for hours. We got trough it, but we need to work on more efficient options.
Good job on the video, thank you for keeping us in mind mind.

I actually want to do something like this for an Engineering class. Maybe on a slightly larger scale, something that could power First Aid tents (Lights, Heart rate monitors, etc) and have a battery for overnight use. If I can't do it for the class, I'll definitely do it for my Senior Project.
Thank you for all that you do!

Are you aware that second box (yes the aux one) has space for 2 sets of batteries ? So actually if you have 500wh from one with inverter you have another 1000wh in a box giving you 1500wh which is amazing and can last for much longer

Nice project. I wish I had something like this at home when I got hit by Maria almost a year ago. I'm glad I found this video eventually because now I can make something similar for future hurricane seasons.
Hurricane Maria was tough. Even when people say that the worst part was having no electricity for a long time... In my opinion the worst thing was having NO form of communications for the first 2 weeks. No telephone, no LTE, no 3G, no TV, no radio....no nothing! I couldn't call my relatives to tell them I was OK, or know if they were fine. News form other parts of the island were spread by word of mouth since most of the TV/radio stations lost their antennas or had problems with their backup generators. This for me was the worst feeling I had after the hurricane, not knowing what was happening out there.

I have to agree with the other comments on the 16V being a bit high, but I'm no expert. I used the exact same Pelican 1200 case, although orange, to build mine, for about the same price you did with a 100W flexible panel... but then you used Lithium which is better... and lighter. Next time I'll probably go lithium like you. Also, I learned the hard way going without fuses for each circuit, some of my smoke got out... so I've added them. You don't want it catching on fire like mine almost did ;) I also stuck my inverter and solar controller on the outside of the case for cooling purposes and I've got a few USB outputs and switches for each output. Anyway, very nice job. It looks very pro!

I can live off grid comfortably with 600 watts of panels. I suggest the use of the 100 watt semiflexible panels with stainless grommets designed for marine use. They can easily be deployed and folded up for storage or transport. The standard solar charger is usually 25 to 30 A and the panels output 18v at 5.5A. So you can start with a 3 panel system that will be around 18 A.
With 6 hours of sunlight that's about 1kWh a day.

I watched the entire video. I listened intently, then watched it again. As I 'understand' it, the pack inside the single Pelican case, which I thought about maybe using an old hard-side Samsonite luggage from a thrift store.
Then I learned that it won't be enough to keep a fridge running. (really sad at this point, and frustrated)
I feel so deflated. I didn't want to have to learn about Sine waves, just how to build a power wall, and now this cool little power generator which would really be enough for me, for when our power goes out here in the trailer park.
Your first video I watched, after the Fixers video, said you would teach me how to build a powerwall, but you used things in a hurry on a piece of particleboard laminated with plastic from HD, I think. You quickly put together your set up, but said the things were only for a test; then you went on to talk about the parts from India. (Simple DIY Powerwall using $1 LG 18650 ebay cells) Then you said you'd stick to this guy, and held up a bunch of purple batteries, all together... but I wasn't shown how to do that.
I am out of my league, of course, but all I wanted to do was learn. I am bummed beyond belief.
I applaud you for what you are doing, for guys that are already versed in sine waves & such. : )

I ended up getting the Monoprice 10x9x7-inch for $25. Definitely bulkier. I haven't got the solar charger yet, but I went with the 36v/48v/60v SL03-4830, and a 28-50v to 12v 360 watt buck converter and am hoping I can get 6 of the 20 cell packs in the case, which will increase capacity to 950wg. If not 6, definitely 5 (792wh). With the BestTek MRI3011MU, overall cost is $18 more in total when pairing with a 360 watt 28-50v to 12v buck converter. Assuming that works and provide the 12v socket and inverter enough voltage. Otherwise it's back to the drawing board.

So, here's a good question- what about scaling up or down? At homes I am personally familiar with- calculating the actual power load is pretty easy. And sun exposure to the roof is REALLY good (in Ponce). Beyond making your very cool emergency set up- a scaled up set up can decentralize the power system enough that people can run their home. I was personally worried about a $5-10k bill to power the house, but that may not be needed.
